Day 545: Astral Diva
You know, one of the few times I've played a character named Thanqol was as a rather stuffy Astral Diva who went around making Meaningful Frowns at Inappropriate Behaviour. He was an out-of-touch kind of arrogant, but he was bumblingly sweet in his way. When I think of a character named Thanqol, that guy is the first one who comes to mind.
One test down, two to go.

*Begins trying to figure out how many more people Thanqol will need to impress before Detroit is fully pony-fied*
Also, I guess with enough dots in Life, she actually could be a pony... Hmm, now that I think about it, there are a surprising number of ways to Mage-up a version of Equestria, although the odds of horrific accident vary. This Machine Surrounds Hate And Forces It To Surrender

Day 548: Pyromonkeys
"I have a plan."
"You don't have a plan. You have a declaration of intent."
"What's the difference?"
"A plan has steps."
Jayden hit Gnosis 5 and had a meaningful conversation with a human being. The latter was arguably more important as it was the precondition with the former. She's on top of the world.

Okay, yeah. That doesn't even sound like a statement of intent, really. It's kind of an idea.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Aha! Somebody else who watches those!
(Seriously, outside of family, I have found not a soul who does)
He certainly looks like a thoroughly messy bum, that's for sure. His face seems a mite flat, perhaps it's the glasses that are throwing me off? I also wish I could see the rest of his hand, it's a bit tricky to see what he's doing with it without seeing the wrist part of it. Other than that, good sketch!Last edited by TheAmishPirate; 2012-11-15 at 06:19 PM.

Day 552: Totally Serious
Urgh, today was awful. Lame excuse for a weak update. Mindscape is uncalibratied.
Anyway. Next few days/week are going to be some close examination of a bunch of tutorials and exercises I've been stockpiling up for when I had free time. Cruising long enough, time for Learning.

Day 553: Two Points
Okay, got my big ol' tutorial exercise roster lined up. Step one is line practise, and first one among that is trying different types of lines.
Doing this was actually massively fun and got my brain into the gear it needed to be in. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
...hard not to notice the complex story in this concept sketch. I think I like it.
...as normal, not going to comment about the quality of / in concept sketchery. But I'm glad that Thanqol's mental transmission is functioning.
...now if we could only find a way to add in a turbo-charger.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
I think I found it, in the form of beautiful music.
Hmmm~
Day 554: Hole In Two
Today's tutorial schedule tells me to look at texture. The exercise was to cut out a little square in a piece of paper, look through it at something, and then draw that tiny little fragment, focusing on texture.
And wow, this was huge. I tried five distinct things and learned something really awesome from each of them. Nothing here's consistent, it's not meant to be; take each area as it's own self-contained thing.
These challenges are great, I'm in the mood again.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Not too far off the mark; it was ponies standing on my speaker system.
Day 555: Another Milestone
Woo, three digits of fives.
Today's tutorial challenge was simple-sounding: Draw a picture without taking your pen off the paper.
DAMN, son, that was the most difficult thing I'd ever done!
Has anyone ever tried that? It's insane! It's impossible! It's like a logic trap, completely overriding everything you know about drawing! I produced preschooler scribble for 25 minutes while I tried to get my head around it.
But eventually it clicked - draw the outline! If I draw the outline then I can fill in the details! Even then, it took a while to get the hang of - but even though what I produced out of it looks absolutely awful, completing it was the most rewarding feeling I've gotten from anything in a while.
If I can get up on my soapbox for a minute, this is why I love drawing, this is why I love my system for learning how to draw, and this is why I think that it's one of the most rewarding pasttimes you can possibly embark on. The scope of learning to draw is not just 'vision', which is already an immense range of topics, it's emotion, it's motion, it's co-ordination, it's logic and lateral thinking. It's challenging and it's easy and every single day you just get better at it and learn things even if - especially if! - you screw up.
If you're bored with drawing, you're doing something seriously wrong. You're not experimenting. You're aiming for a product rather than an experience. You're not challenging yourself in the right ways. Consistently throughout this project the moments of utmost joy have always come when I struck at something I thought was impossible for me to achieve and, even though I didn't even come close I still learned an incredible lesson along the way. It's the days when I did something totally different or upside down. When I didn't just draw the same face in the same way as yesterday, or linework+bucketfill the same time as last time.
It's been 555 days and this whole thing still feels new to me, with so much scope and so much - so much! - to explore!
When I titled this thread "Every Step Is The First" it was actually a chiding of myself, a warning to not get too arrogant at having finished a single Drawthread. But it has a much deeper wisdom to it than that - every step is the first because every day you have the chance to rediscover what it is to work with your hands for the love of your eyes.
Take that chance. Spill ink on your masterpiece. Invert the colours. Splash down paints at random. Roll around in ink and pencil shavings laughing with joy! Creation should be beautiful!

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Day 556: The Man On The Moon
Who here watched Mr. Squiggle as a kid?
If you're unfamiliar, Mr. Squiggle was a children's puppet with a pencil for a nose. He'd draw a series of abstract lines on a paper and then the host would question him on what it was. Mr. Squiggle would chant "Upside down! Upside down!", the host would flip it and fill in a few details and it'd be a distinct image.
Mr Squiggle was the BOSS.
Anyway, today's tutorial challenge was to do a Mr. Squiggle drawing. These are the greatest challenges. I need to start putting more time into my drawing but I've been distracted with video games.
Here's the squiggle
Here's what I turned it into

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Day 557: Tactile
Saw Skyfall today, it was fantastic, one of the best Bond films. Go see it.
Today's challenge:
"Draw by touch. Take a small object and hold it in your non-dominant hand while you sketch with the other. Try to draw the object as accurately as you can without looking at it, just feeling the form with your fingers."
Every day of these is just great. I should mention that I wouldn't have gotten remotely the same benefit out of doing these challenges a year or so earlier; my accumulated knowledge and understanding of how to hold and move a brush comes together to allow me to attempt them. But this makes them perfect for where I'm at right now - it's helping me think three dimensionally which is good because I tend to use a lot of computer references.
