Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Day 492: Athi
Off on a tangent because I had a wave of nostalgia for my old science-fiction race, the Draconic Kobolds. This is Athi.
I loved playing Athi. She was an Azura'goldir, the Kobold pilot/infiltrator caste. Could shoot the wings off a Silmarathus with a Gravity Rifle from behind a mountain.

Day 493: Ath Reathissed
Well, that turned out better than I expected. Plenty of mistakes with it but considering the nature of the experiments I'ma call this a win.
I'm struck to illustrate all my old Kobold stuff. I might do that. They're still my favourite sci fi thing ever.

That is a quite lovely, Thanqol! You should consider giving her a backdrop.
However, those sure are some surprisingly coloured border lines. Mind expanding on them?Last edited by PrinceAquilaDei; 2012-09-20 at 12:55 PM.

Thank you! I'm thinking of putting her in a lineup with all six Kobold castes.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Sounds like a much better idea.
Random experiment. Mixed results; it worked for the hair and skin texture, but I completely whiffed the shirt colour the first time I did it, and had to hurriedly paint over it, which lead to strange conflicts all of it's own. Needs more investigation but I am still interested in the idea of slightly off-black exterior linework.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
Deliberate experiment, not informed decision.
Day 494: ira'Goldir
WIP because Fallout Equestria has eaten all my time.
The ira'Goldir are the Kobold diplomacy caste. Expert negotiators with subtle social psychic powers, they have the intimidating physical physique of sixth graders. Still, a sixth grader with an ELF Razorwhip is a sixth grader you do not want to mess with.
A brief discussion on Kobold technology:
The Kobolds have three key pieces of unique technology that forms the foundation of their galactic edge:
Gravity Control: The Kobolds are masters at gravitics. Their key piece of space technology is the Grav-Rail, which is essentially a thruster engine that transforms local gravitational events into mobility. In a planet's gravity field a Kobold ship can turn on a dime and perform sickening displays of aereobatics. In deep space this power decreases to almost nothing, unless the Kobolds are able to deploy a gravity well in the area. Kobold operational range is thus predictable, but they are very effective within that range. They especially like fighting near stars and gas giants.
They have some weapons that manipulate gravity for effect, such as Athi's grav-gun sidearm. Have the very nasty ability to bypass armour and point defences; fortunately they are notoriously difficult to aim.
ELF Weaponry: The ultimate in high-tech nonlethal weapons, ELectromagnetic Flux weapons function not by generating power and firing it as a discharge, but by sucking the power out of their opponents. An ELF Whip (named for their arcing electrical firing pattern) can drain a warship's reactor directly, shutting down all powered systems and destroying sensitive electronics. Used on personnel, the ELF causes immediate unconsciousness by draining mental energy. They also bypass shields without interference and can empty the power cells of enemy weapons. ELFs are generally very short range, rapid firing, and manifest as protruding arc-spikes of various sizes. They're usually shoulder mounted, as you can see on Athi.
The darker variant is the ELF Razorwhip, which is one of the most inhumane weapons in the galaxy and contrasts darkly with the comparatively peaceful ELF Thunderwhip. The Razorwhip doesn't drain power, it 'drains' matter. Each arcing strike tears a huge chunk of the starship's structure or victim's flesh out and hurtles it aside. Kobolds don't like talking about Razorwhips.
Digital Technology: The final achievement of the Kobolds, Digi-Tech are solid-light holographic projections that function as platonic perfections of the emulated weapon. A Digi-Tech firearm might appear as a ring, bracelet or eyepatch when inert, but when active a shining image of a gun projects itself into the user's hand, capable of firing infinitely without reloading, tearing through even advanced alloys without resistance, and with a variety of other benefits and abilities. Digi-Tech is very rare, but there are digital examples of everything from cooking pots, swords, tanks - and even rumours of a terrifying digital starship that folds up into a suitcase when not in use.

Day 496: Silja
Completed ira'Goldir sketch. Some very different experiments this time around.
I played two ira'Goldir, one was named Silja and I can not for the life of me remember the other one's name. The forgotten one wound up stranded on a desert planet, learning martial arts from some wacko tribals and the game ended before he was ever rescued.

Day 497: Exalted.avi
Been watching Kannazuki no Miko and enjoying it more than I should. In terms of pure quality it's just okay but in terms of hitting the things Thanqol is weak against it's spot on.
EDIT: Finished the series. Yep. God I'm a sucker for romance like that.
Going to get back to the monster manual challenge soonish.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
As promised, here are the Masters Of The Industrial Elements requests. The first few, anyway.
1. The Faceless Prince. He's a major bad guy, and for his physical description I'll just quote the book:
Having forsaken his natural form for that of his
Lightning Body Incarnation, the Mad Prince appears as
a humanoid-shaped collection of copper segments
joined by arcs of lightning. His sections are rough,
scarred by decades of battles, and spotted with bluegreen
tarnish. As his title would suggest, the copper
lump that serves as his head is featureless and smooth.
Thick cables form his hair, hanging down to his knees.
He looks a bit like this, honestly. Which is why we're asking you for this one.
He leads an army of semi-robotic monsters in an industrial hellscape. So if you're looking for background elements, you'll want lots of hideous things and disturbing amalgamations of metal and flesh.
2. A wire spinner. A wire spinner is a mechanical spider the size of a man, which makes webs out of cables. Ideally, it'd be shown walking on its own wiry web. If that's too tricky to draw, it can stand on walls too.
3? Dunno whether you're up for landscape art, but if so the Black Vast could use an illustration.
It's a massive canyon between two metallic continental plates, bridged by wires spun by the aforementioned wire spinners. There's a village on the wire bridge, and all of its buildings are made of wires too. The scene is dark, but the village is dotted with alchemical lanterns.
Anyway, thanks in advance.
If you're having trouble coming up with something good, well, we can wait.

On it.
Day 500: Monobear Theatre
He knows when you are sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been naughty
So be good or Monobear will torture you to death
(Linewidths need work, stupid layer structuring made this harder than was necessary, Monobear is heaps easy to draw)

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
I went to the TV tropes page of the anime monobear is from. It looks like the kind of anime I would hate with a deep, complete, utter passion. >_>
Because, uh, grim and terrible deaths and grim and just gnarly. <_<

Dem vermints all look the same to me.
It's a visual novel, not an anime. And it's hilarious and terrifying and I recommend it in general. But there's no getting around the DESPAIR, so if that's not your cuppa let it be.
D'awww, just like the stories she used to read as a child.
Uh, that's a photograph. I can't draw photograph quality stuff. If it's not a photograph, I most definitively can not draw stuff that could be mistaken for a photograph.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
My apologies for the nonspecific description.
I've never commissioned art before, so I'm probably pretty awful at it. Feel free to ask for more clarification or to tell me if I'm doing something wrong.
I mostly like the composition on this one. The way his bits are arranged is nice, except for the head bit. That bit could stand to be a bit higher.
Not so wild about the mechanical stylings, though. Smooth shiny metal would be better than rivets. So if you could leave all the little knobbly bits out of the final version, that'd be fantastic.
I don't think the gun hand fits, either. Two real hands would be more suitable.
I like the way that the eye is drawn to the sunburst gear design in the center. Stick the glowing gem there and I bet it it'll look pretty intimidating.

Re: Thanqol Learns 2 Draw: Every Step Is The First
You can tell the general effectiveness of a description by how many unique pieces of information it gives.
For reference, when I make commissions it tends to use this format of description:
Errant:
Errant works for the Guardians of the Veil, who are the secret police of the Mage world. She’s short, with pale skin and blue eyes and a doll-like prettiness. She also has some absolutely horrifying scars and injuries. Her appearance is a mixture of disturbing and attractive. She carries herself with a quiet, measured authority and complete calm at all times.
Errant dresses in a rather elaborate Gothic style. Silver and black, with a high collar, high boots, dress, very little skin showing.
Pose: “Contemplation”. Errant is quiet until it is time to say something, so intensely conservative with her secrets that even casual conversation gives away too much. When she’s in these between-moments she’s quiet, meditative, staring at people with a faraway interest in her eyes.
Spoiler
The point of said description is to communicate a style and mood for the piece as well as outlining major features. Be broad, but be specific, and don't linger too much on accessories.
Also don't be afraid to provide reference pictures!
