Better than? That's really hard to do, and up for lots of debate.

However, I would say that Mass Effect 2 is the same high quality as Mass Effect 1. Same with Half Life and Half Life 2.

I would also say that there seems to be a lot more content in Portal 2 than in Portal.

I don't think it's possible to know the answer to that whatsoever. Unless Valve employs speed-runners for the specific purpose of letting customers know how fast it's possible to beat their games.

Also don't know where you got the idea that they're only making it longer. Not only is there now co-op mode, which is going to be its own brand of crazy-awesome, Valve's already announced a whole slew of new ways to solve puzzles, which is surely only a small peek of what's to come. Plus, it's shaping up to have a deeper story than the original (fantastic as the original was) so there's that as a selling point too.

Hell, if it was the same length but had all that, I'd be a sucker and pay the $50 for it right there. Luckily, it's longer too.

YES. My main complaint about ME2 from the beginning, was how it felt like a console shooter. And whose idea was it to make an ammo system? That's the dumbest thing ever. And the item management system. No longer can you swap out your ammo depending on the situation. The story's good, but some of the gameplay mechanics suck.

That said, I have every confidence in Valve to produce a high quality game that I'll enjoy and consider to be worth my money.

Don't judge a game simply by its length. In a simplified case, one might argue that a game with 100 hours equivalent worth of gameplay is the "best bang for the buck" without noting that the game in question might be absolutely awful. This is one extreme case, but with a game such as Portal (2), and Valve games in general, the real fun comes not from the stock experience, but from the additional user-created content.

I do see where you're coming from. It's the distinction and fine line between making a sequel, a spiritual successor, and/or a game to just milk the franchise.

But ME1 was genuinely designed for consoles first and got ported by another dev, while ME2 was released simultaneously for both platforms by bioware.

Definitely was changed in a way that matches theoretical "dumbing down" (less numbers, less inventory), but if it was just for consoles, be an odd set up considering the history.

And shotguns still rule for Vanguards. Vanguards are the best.

I was mostly just using the phrase, I know it was first produced for the consoles.
Pretty much one of the few things I do know about the production. I avoided all trailers and adverts and whatnot for the game. All I heard was BioWare is making a new RPG set in space, pre-ordered the special edition and swore to go in blind to make the most of it.
Damn, it was worth it.

Especially when you have an in depth description of how ammo is no longer a concern in the first game, then WHAM, AMMO in the second.

The story is actually my biggest problem with Mass Effect 2. Some of the characters are fine but by God. In a role playing game, of all things, you're forcing me to make incredibly uncharacteristic decisions. Working with Cerberus? The people I hunted down in a mad streak of justice across several systems in the first game for killing a commanding officer.

I've just started playing ME2 this past week (on the Xbox) and I'm very grateful for the changes. I replayed ME1 right before I got 2 and got sick of having to deal with a billion random pieces of crap in my inventory.

I ended up dreading opening my inventory screen for fear that I would have a dozen new ammo modifiers. I sold practically everything I had, got up to the money cap, had hundreds of omnigel, and just kept selling things for nothing just to get them out of my inventory.

I mean, sure, I'd like to have a little more variety in weapon choice, but at least I don't have to worry about armor and accessories for an entire platoon of soldiers.

I am now salivating at the prospect of more Portal, except for one thing. It will break me. I'm looking at some of the trailer puzzles and thinking "That requires a steady hand and clear thinking at the same time." I am doomed. Doomed.

Yep, having like 24 shots and only 1 piece of ammo per clip you loot is soooooooooooo much fun.
