This speech had been the event of much speculation in the past few days. The reason for the speech was of course something decided in the elite-level political meeting with EU, but what exactly it was had been kept secret remarkably well.

As the president stepped on the podium to the flashing lights, blinking, he smiled at the cameras and raised his arm, both as a gesture to the viewers and to quieten down the room.

"Look at the date. Remember this day, you who are present and you who are watching, for it is one that will be remembered in history. I'm sure many of you are anxious to know what was talked about in the recent meeting. It was a momentous occasion indeed, a meeting between people of different cultures, different nationalities and different ideals.

However, there is still one thing in common with each of us. As politicians, we work principally for the good of our nation, but as people, we care for the world and it's people in their entirety. It is this quality, one that I hold in highest regard among the top leaders of the world today and one that is present in remarkably many of them, that allowed us to see face-to-face, set aside petty politics and war-torn history and come to terms with what is needed to set the world on a new, better course.

The world currently is not what it once was, let alone what it should have become. Humankind has not healed it's wounds since the War. We are torn, divided, and stand individually, trying to topple each other so that we may have more than our share of the light. The advancement of science other than the engineering of more destructive weapons has slowed down to a crawl, the exploration and colonization of space promised to us so long ago as the salvation of our race has halted. The unifying of the world, which seemed to be making great progress in the time between the Second and Third World War, has began backsliding. Civilization itself needs to pick up the pieces and continue on the path to our glory.

Currently, there are hotspots of conflict all over the world, just as there has always been, and as cynics say there will always be. However, those little wars and disputes are growing ever more destructive. Once every warlord has the means to destroy our planet, is there anyone who would doubt that one of them manages to find the will? Global community, led by the United States of America so long ago, was not without it's flaws. But it took a stand when it mattered, and forced nations to compliance if they were a threat to the world. Today, there is a lack of such common purpose, of people and nations working together to solve the world's problems. Cooperation happens on a project-basis, trading help, always looking out for their own interests. Mistrust and chaos sowed by the previous war still has it's roots in the governments of the world, and there is no one entity strong enough to challenge this.

So, a decision had to be made, and it was made. A call of challenge to other nations of the world, asking them whether they can stand up, remove the barriers, walls and weapons between them and their neighbours and actually see their face. Step out of your political bunkers, and do what is right for all of us, not just for yourself.

As of today, the Russian Federation joins the European Union."

The following noise was enough to drown any further words from the President. Luckily, he seemed finished, stepping down while taking a sip of water. The details of the new 'Eurasian Union' would come later, as well as the tens of thousands of details and prodecures that had to be observed. The speech was a symbol, the starting point of the new era. This day, this hour, was when it all began.
