Man, Bhu, you just love making those Unique monsters :P
For some reason, this guy makes me think of that Black Mask you made for Urban Legends...Half-elves are like slinkies.
They're not really good for anything,
but you can't help laughing when they fall down the stairs.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Personally I do very complex things (true dragons for instance), so I hybridize the approaches, keeping a text file that I save under iterative names (My Monster 1, My Monster 2, My Monster 3), changing the file name each time I cut and paste back and forth between the two, or make major changes.

Jack's done (jsut in time too). Certain aspects of him were left deliberately vague for individual DM's to fill in (i.e. his actual origin).

EDIT: Okay, my monster is up, the Idle Chill. Got it in on time, thankfully.
By the way, VP, seems like a LOT more people posted this time. Be it because of the broader topic or because summer is almost upon us. Either way, the turnout has been awesome.Last edited by TheLogman; 2009-05-19 at 09:40 PM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Two cold critters in a row.
And a stiff lineup of competition for the Spider Witch.
The Spider Witch is probably the creepiest thing i have ever brewed. I really get freaked out by spiders so to make a sexy magical spider chick was kinda hard on me.

Ok, my net is being wonky so may extend deadline by a couple days. Otherwise gonna try for the library (which I'm at now, my workplace not allowing outside connection)

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
I had written up cloud fairies on the WotC site for the Oz project; unfortunately makes them ineligble here otherwise I would have submitted them.
Legend Lore: In general, the DC of such a check equals 10 + the monster’s HD. A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster. Hardly anyone ever gets this right.
Tuatha de Danaan has one feat too many. If it is a bonus feat, you need to identify it with (B).
Taco Fairy should probably have a Level Adjustment of +2. Flight alone is worth a +1 to LA.
Chelissadhu--CR is definitely higher. Why does a 8 HD creature have 12 HD of minions, much less 24? Perhaps you should have gone with a swarm of spiders. Also, you need to decide which class is a favored class. Having three doesn't make any sense. Creatures generally advance either by class or by HD not both. As intelligent as these are, advancing by class makes more class and I actually think Ranger is a more appropriate class then either the Druid or the Rogue--especially since the accepted alignments don't fit for Druid at all.
Drinwr- If you are treating the Fae Climbing Pick as daggers then they should do the same damage as a Diminutive Dagger: Smaller weapons do less damage. A diminutive dagger would do 1 point of damage. Where is the +8 damage coming from?
DebbyP.E.A.C.H. Please Evaluate And Critique Honestly. Being nicer and kinder doesn't hurt either. Note I generally only critique 3.5 and Pathfinder material.
Please, please, please when using non-core material, cite to the books. There are too many books to wade through to find the one with the feat, special ability or spell you use.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
True, but sometimes that just isn't appropriate. For example, I didn't want the Whimsycaps to be common knowledge. Some rough lore about them, perhaps...but complete knowledge of everything these can do? If it's not a surprise, then there's no difficultly at all to the encounter...simply bypass them. So I don't really see the problem with that in any of these cases.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Djinn, actually you did it perfectly right. The starting base is generally DC 10+creature's HD and each subsequent check increases by +5.
Common Knowledge -- usually means that you know the creature's type and subtype. Some of these are really obvious but not always.
Also, most people left out what kind of check would be appropriate. Is it Knowledge (Nature), Knowledge (The Planes) or even Bardic Knowlege?
That said, some monsters do deserve to have higher DC checks. Monster that resemble their more common brethern can be easily mistaken. Just look at the number of people who fail their toadstool vs. mushroom checks and suffer the unfortunate consequences. That being said, if you are going to deviate from the common rule, it is a good idea to state so up front and give the reason why.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
How long till the deadline again? I've got a creature in mind but I need a couple more days to write it up.
I use black for sarcasm.
Call me Rose, or The Rose Dragon. Rose Dragon is someone else entirely.
If you need me for something, please PM me about it. I am having difficulty keeping track of all my obligations.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Since I was reading some of these, and VT has extended the deadline, I will make a few comments here:
Bloody Handed Jack-
I THINK you are supposed to list Vorpal after the 19-20 on the Attack and Full-Attack lines.
Returning with the full compliment of the city watch at your back doesn't seem like it would be breaking the bargain technically...
So after someone is cursed by the knife, how soon does he know? Instantly? Via Gather Information and other mundane means?
Would unarmed strikes bypass his regeneration? What about summoned creatures using natural weapons? Druid offensive spells?
Fyumyad -
The first word of the Fluff should be plural.
"They will use the power of nature to heal and act as guides for weary travelers."
That doesn't belong under "combat".
Can they detect masterwork instruments as a supernatural ability, or do they have to see(or hear!) it normally? I suppose an appraise roll is not needed...
Idle Chill
Picture missing.
Should be "Of all..." not "Off all..."
I see no "Slacker's Rest" ability... only "Quickened Rest", which doesn't seem very useful as a combat option per se...

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Ah, thanks. I wrote that when I wasn't quite in the right mind. I just wanted to get my point across before the competition ended XD
No they have to see it normally (but do you know any bard that doesn't walk around with their instrument in their hands?). Masterwork Instruments should be easy to tell apart from normal ones IMO, as "masterwork" they should be decoratively crafted... I imagine something like a paragon of an instrument. I don't imagine an appraise roll should be needed.Last edited by Sir Shadow; 2009-05-21 at 07:32 AM.

Re: GITP Monster Competition Chat Thread II
Hmm...those night fey dont look though enough to be CR 12.
As for the mountian fey...they freak me out with the extra four arms.
I must say Sidhe was probably compelled to make an entry considering the nature of his/her name.
I like the whimsycaps. I want to have a party encounter like 100 of them.
