Re: Dwarf fortress
Yep, that'll do it.
It's good to have at least 1 farm about 8x8, and maybe another small one for good measure.
Also, I'm not sure how it affects anything greatly, but telling a kitchen to cook (you have to say "Prepare -x- Meal" and hit 'R') turns food into... Different food...
I used this method to somehow sustain my savanna fortress for a while (hopefully they'll finish that wall before another Goblin ambush comes...)

Re: Dwarf fortress
So I think I got it right, but it was too late. Losing is Fun. I had fun. So I started another fortress...not thirty seconds in, a bear started eating my dwarves.

Re: Dwarf fortress
That's a good one... I kinda run anarchal societies (very little planning involved, but functional sometimes)

Re: Dwarf fortress
Since my fortress is 60 z levels off the ground, I decided to make myself a highway for the merchants. I now have a 3 wide path to the edge of the map, and it's marking my depot as accessable, but when the time came it said they had bypassed it because it was inaccessable. Is this because the entrance to my map is 60 levels above the ground, or am I not exploiting bugs properly?

Re: Dwarf fortress
The green "accessable" tiles in the display are counted from the depot, so for it to be accessable to merchants, make sure at least one tile is accessable on the edge of the map. If not, find where the green trail ends, and work edgeward from there.
If you still have trouble, putting the fort up on DFMA would give us a better idea of what's up. Also, it'll let you brag about your 60 z-level tall fortSpoilerBossing Around Mad Cats for Fun and Profit: Let's Play MechCommander 2!

Re: Dwarf fortress
Anyone have a link to LabourDF? I'd like to give that a try but the wiki link is broken.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I've never heard about LabourDF until now, and it looks like it isn't around anymore. I'd suggest trying Dwarf Manager instead.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I'll have to look into that.
In the meantime, i'm mad at my crossbow maker. He just had a fey mood and made a bow. Not a crossbow, a bow. None of my dwarves can equip it. I can't make arrows. That thing is totally useless unless I wanna come back in adventure mode to pick it up.If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Re: Dwarf fortress
Put it in a weapon trap. Even if you can't load the thing, it's a good way to jack up the value of a room.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Considering that my fortress has seen no battles or deaths or nobles or even immigrants (which is getting annoying because my starting 7 are having to multitask) my engraver made some interesting pictures.
Engraving 1:
Engraved on the wall is a image of a millstone by 'Conot'
Okay, the first one wasn't but look further on.
Engraving 2: Engraved on the wall is a well-designed image of dwarves by 'Conot'. The dwarves are traveling. The artwork relates to the foundation of Paintfeed by The Hammer of Equality of The Hot Arena in the early sping of 201.
This one will be nice for any architect who happens to come in during Adventure mode.
Engraving 3: Emgraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of Alath Relicdecent the dwarf and dwarves by 'Conot'. Alath Relicdecent is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf Alath Relicdecent to leardership of the Hammer of Equality in the early sping of 201.
Quite cool, once I get further on I might find this place in Adventure mode for funsies.
EDIT: Huh, hes also put 2 more engravings at the end of the corridor with the engravings of wizards, which is apparently the symbol of my town. Who would a thunk it?
------
EDIT 2: Started a new fortress: Angelborn of Binding or Sedildolush Estun
Im thinking about doing either a Dwarf Fortress LP or doing a series of journals for this fortress, like what you see in Bloodline games. Opinions?Last edited by Connor Darkdart; 2009-07-13 at 05:49 AM.

Re: Dwarf fortress
You shouldn't have your dwarves engrave until they're legendary from smoothing. You'll get higher quality engravings that way.

Re: Dwarf fortress
First megabeast was rather anti-climatic. Cage trap that I'd been using to thin out the goblins captured the dragon. I tamed him and stuck him on a chain outside. We'll see how it stops the gobbos.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Make sure to give him some cover. Wouldn't want some dumbass goblin archer to get lucky before he can get torched.

Re: Dwarf fortress
I want to play this game... but every time I try to get it loaded the interface just drives me away.
Any chance there's a Dwarf Fortress For Dummies out there?

http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/...ss-part-1-wtf/
is the most idiot-proof (tm) tutorial out there. It comes with its own saves and fully graphical enhanced client. Try this if you seriosly want to start. Trust me its easy step by step. Just do exactly what he says.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Thats the way I learned it, there are also some videoguides out there, while not with a tileset they are good if you want to know how something special is done, for example setting up an army.
And a general advice: Let dwarffortresswiki run in the background. Every time you don't understand a word, wiki it!

Re: Dwarf fortress
Anyone know how to clear up the clothing that gets all over the floor of the barracks when wrestlers spar? It belongs to the dwarves so you apparently can't dump it and they don't seem to want to pick it back up.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Well, magma might work, but I'm not sure how you would get it out afterwards... And it might end up causing more problems than it fixes.
But this is Dorf Fortress, and solutions to problems that end up creating problems that are worse than the problems that they were made to fix is par for the course!

Re: Dwarf fortress
Why even bother cleaning it up? I gave up on cleaning anything except my noble quarters after I filled half the map with all the rock I cleared from single mine.

Re: Dwarf fortress
Any way to make stone items from a specific type of stone? Or will they just pick the nearest stone to them to make things from? I have a mix of Bauxite and Chalk doors in my fortress and I dont like the colour miss-match lol

Re: Dwarf fortress
You can forbid your dwarves from using a particular type of stone by pressing [z], selecting Stone, and disabling the types of stone you don't want them to use.
