I think, i could made it with a careful play.

blade hand + abjuration + haste + dispell undead make my day, and I find the needed resist in the elvish hall.

I hate this game. I was playing Orc Jesus, just happily axing my way through D2, when I stumbled across an ice dragon hide. My immediate thought was "hot goddamn, I might actually make it to the orc mines this runthrough". I forgot that being optimistic signals the RNG to rain hellfire down upon you like God of the old testament. I tried all of my scrolls, but to no avail, no enchant armors. I continued on, hoping to find one, and turned a corner into terrence. Who had a wand of disintegration. There's little chunks of orc messiah all over the dungeon now.

I'd be supportive of 3, for having heroic sociopaths running around the surface world is quite different from the rest of the series. Still not sure how I feel about Avernum 1: Take 3 and its leveling system, as it felt too forgiving in Avadon for a Spiderweb Software game.
