Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
To help allay those quizzical expressions and hotblooded thoughts, Lioness is talking about flip-flops when she is talking about thongs; Thongs are what we Australians call your flip-flops. If you suddenly find yourself in Australia and wondering why everyone can see everyone's thongs, there's your answer
To see the world in a grain of sand
and Heaven in a wild flower
To hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
Because sandals tie-up or use velcro or are held on in some manner, where thongs are just held on by a strip between your toes.

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
Parts of it. He was referring to the fact that we're crawling with venemous bitey things that could sink a fang into a toe and kill us, and non-venemous bitey things that could take off a whole foot.
Coid, it's basically because we're made of sticks and stones and ball-bearings. I myself wrestle crocodiles on a daily basis, and have won five international You Call That A Knife? competitions in the past six years.

Why am I not in the slightest bit surprised that the LGBT thread is having an in-depth discussion of the relative semantics of sandals?

A thong is a thin strap of leather.
A thong (footwear) has a thin strap of "leather" going between the toes. Thus the name.
A thong (underwear) has a thin strap of "leather" designed to give a horrendous wedgie. Thus the name.
I don't know where "g-string" comes from, but I prefer it.The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
The term 'g-string' came about specifically to give players of stringed instruments a hard time.

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
G-string comes from the word Geestring, a term used by american invaders for a particular form of loincloth clothing of the native americans.
I've also heard jokes that the term became more popular after the discovery of the Grafenberg spot because of the perceived connection between the garment and the location, vis-a-vis the availability thereof.
Edit: Gah, I want to distinguish between non natives and the native population, but the phrasing here seems more recriminatory than I mean. It is accurate, especially given the timeframe that the word emerged, but... Gah...

No indeed I do not.

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
So... I recently came out to my friends as pansexual. In my circle of friends and local LGBT community, it's a somewhat well-known term, though not nearly as common as bisexual. I also know some people use the term differently than I do (to me, it simply means I'm potentially attracted to all gender expressions, including those that don't fit in the usual binary), and that to a lot of people (especially those outside the LGBT community) it's a relatively unheard of label.
Does anyone else use the term? How have you heard it defined?

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
First of all, congrats on coming out. As for the word, I use it to describe myself. As far as it relates to myself, I define it as gender-neutral emotional attraction, I guess. I am more attracted to the idea of a relationship than that with someone of a specific gender (allowing for possible relationships with most genders). However, as far as physical attraction goes, I tend to veer towards those of the female gender. Take what you can from my muddled comment, I'm sure I haven't explained it properly (also, I know this might not be exactly what pansexual is but I feel it's the word that describes me best).

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
Congratulations on that. Hope that continues to work out well for you.
I've met people who use it, and its definitions are fairly muddled, or so it's always seemed to me. And apparently a number of other people feel similarly as there was some amount of asking why pansexuals needed to distance themselves from bisexuals. I believe we had a discussion of it... mid-thread last thread, possibly the thread before last towards the end as well.
Last consensus was, it means bisexual + whatever bias the person hearing it favors, of a pool of about 6 or so.
I believe one was bisexual + individuals of indeterminate sex and/or transsexuals (in some kind of flux state, presumably) somewhere in the middle of the transition process.
One was basically the rejection of the existence of gender and/or sexes. Sort of made people confused as to why they were getting gender into sexuality. And really confused as to how intersexed people invalidate the idea of having two sexes.
One was bisexual + some kind of idea of sexuality based entirely upon presented gender, which provoked the same confused noises as the other one.
And then the one that seemed most well understood was the one that was basically bisexuality + an interest in genderqueer and gender****. It was this one or another one that seemed to correlate with a feeling that bisexual was a dirty word/bisexuals were viewed as bad people by others, more so than gays or lesbians or sommat, so they wanted to mentally distance themselves from that bias as much as possible.
This is, of course, filtered through memory.
So I basically view it as a bit of the last one and the second to last one with possibilities of the second one and as more of a pseudo-philosophy of sex than a completely discrete sexuality.

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
Summarizin' my view: it's either just bisexual except you're taking the word "bisexual" literally, or it's a more accurate term for "bisexual" that should replace it. I have yet to be convinced that there's any meaningful difference between them, outside of literalism.
Butcheh, congratmutations, hope it causes absolutely no ripples whatsoever except for those relating to obtaining a mate and then only for the positive. The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: LGBTitp - Part Six
First of all, let me add my own personal congratulations, hope it all works out great for you.
I've used it, but not very often, because, when you explain it to them, most people will just react "So, it's the same as bisexual, right?" because, in the way bisexual is used, it really is. So rather than use a label I'll have to explain to pretty much everyone first, and knowing that most of them won't see a difference to the established one, I'll just go with bisexual.

Congrats, and I'd think it was interest in anyone, regardless of gender and sex.
