Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Aaah, thank you smuchmuch. Tried to improve on the character a little, I promise I wont post again until someone else posts an art work. Probably.
Not sure if I made the hair better, or worse. Eh.
*edit*
Technically I'm not posting again, so
Just decided to work on the hair a bit. I REALLY like CrimsonAngel's stuff, particularly the hair, so I tried modelling this (Hair) after one of the ones earlier in this thread, with a bit of my own style (Read: Newbieness) thrown in. I'd really like some critique on it.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Interesting work, especially the second one. I feel the body is a bit too long [I understand that skirt (?) makes it look longer, but I'm referring to the starting point of said skirt]
Otherwise, great job!
The first one, I feel, is on the right track. The second one reminds me of a long-forgotten interactive webcomic caled The Legend of THE BEAST. Nice, but I don't feel it works for OotS.
The last one, I feel it's not right. The arm starts in a weird place, and the form it takes is weird as well. The weapon, though awesome, looks a bit off. The "movement" of the coat is completely off. I suggest looking at reference pics for that.
And, finally, Serpie takes "that impossible request" and shows us that "Really, it wasn't THAT impossible".
I like how it came out, really. I'm not one to make creatures in OotS, it seems.Last edited by Crimmy; 2012-06-29 at 09:29 AM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
So I got the forums to work for me again.. But I'm in such a bad mood that I couldn't gewt myself to make a new avatar. Tried to make Frodo Baggins oots style. But meh.
So instead, I just fiddled around a bit with the paladin chick. Did more work on her hair, tried to make it a bit more "elegant". Also shortened the chain dress, at advice from Crimmy. Also: /me worships Serpentine's avatarist skeelz.
*Edit*
Made a knight. Still don't like the hair. Please critique? Pleasepleaseplease?

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
@ Copacetic:
Looks alright. something in the pose feels a bit sitff to me tough.
Question Is this meant to a sized up avatar or just a teplate/drawing though ? Because I'm sorry but if it's the former, I'm pretty sure once shrinked at 120*120 pretty a lot of the fine details will become complelty muddled if not invible (the tatoo, the runes on the crown.)
-----------------------------------------
@ Abscondcrow:
About the hair, though the thiner line compared to the rest of the avatar looks a bit weird, I think the general shape looks a lot better, a lot smoother and more natural. at leas ta tht front, the way it falls on the back of the head looks a bit strnage (maby make it rounder, a bit more volume here ?)
If you are willing to experiment a bit you could try putting highlights in there, but totherise i think it's already a big improvement.
The round rather than oval eyes are not OOts style though, is it assumed as a stylistic choice of your own ?
I thinkt he way the feet are posed, the tip of the sword should touch the ground a little lwoer than it does but I could be wrong.
----------------------------------------------------
I can do like all the cool kids and OOTs ish avatars too.
(something feels weird witht he psoition of the feet, i guess. but i can't see what eaxctly. tried to keep them cosnsitent witht the reference image.)
(And an old one;
who happen to have a white background due to some error of mine at the timz. For future reference, Anyone can tell me a way to remove those without having to remake the whole avatar ? (and yes , I lost the original SVG in a server crash a while ago or else it'd be easy.))
(That one i really dislike the stars in the background, anyone know how to do a star laden field that'd look good in Inscape ?)Last edited by smuchmuch; 2012-07-01 at 04:58 PM.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Use thicker lines and make the eyes noticeably bigger. Like at least double what you have there.
Use thicker lines on the hair, the change in thickness from the body to the hair is too radical to flow smoothly. Her feet are too small in comparison with the rest of her. Use thicker lines on the outside of the sword too.
I'd also suggest giving the body a curve here and there to make the character's gender a little more obvious.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
It.. It's meant to be a male.. crap.
*sigh* I suppose that means I have ALOT more work to do. In the meantime though,
Fixed up the hair more. Made boot longer. Eyes bigger.
To be honest, I kind of like the smaller feet, the huge, normal oots style feet just look.. "wrong" to me. I dunno.Last edited by Abscondcrow; 2012-07-02 at 02:18 AM. Reason: changed the image

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Man, I gotta go through this thread and make a more complete response to recent stuff. In the meantime since I'm tired, I'll stick to one.
This is looking really good with the adjustments you made. I have to agree about the boots. I don't like the usual giant oots boots. I think how you have them now looks great.
And the main reason I'm posting is to point out why your avi seems to suggest it's a woman. It's because the eyes and mouth are as close together as they are. Try moving the eyes up a bit.
For reference:
Male:
Female:
It's a fairly subtle difference, but if you try shifting the face a bit you'll see the difference straight away. As you might guess, I ran into this same problem a while back.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Thanks for all the help everyone!
So I'm done editing the knight UNLESS someone still thinks it looks female. I don't really know if it does, looks male to me XD
Something I did for someone on the request an avatar thread. I quite like how it turned out. This one does look male, right?

One starts to wonder why you're bothering to stick with OotS style. You're clearly trying to progress beyond it. At this point it seems like all it's doing is holding you back.

Ehh... I don't like it. The arms, pose, line thickness, body, face, sword.
I'd recommend shorter arms, curving a bit more, and shorter body.Last edited by Crimmy : Tomorrow at 26:72 DM.

Yeah, Cuthalion, the arms are too long. They should bend upwards much sooner than that, or they look unnatural.

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Pinkie pointed me to this thread, I don't know why I never thought to post here before. I mainly use the 'Rate the Avatar' thread which is probably not the best place for improving my artistic talent.
@Cuthalion As they've said, the arms are too long, but they're also weird the way they come out of the shoulderpads like that. Lastly the hands are a little small, I have a terrible problem with that that I'm trying to get over. One thing I really like is the eyes, I think you nailed the way to do coloured OotS eyes. I'd say just redo the sword, it doesn't fit with the rest of the piece.
This is the Gnome Cecaelia avatar I'm wearing for Aquatic week. People have said the colour transitions were rather harsh but I had really no way of fixing them that I liked. What do you all think? Any advice to how better do colour transitions like this in the future?

The hair.... it looks Paintish. I suggest making a shape, then blurring it. Also, the eyes are the same colour.
Here's another request I fulfilled a while back:

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
@Cuthalion Ah, the hair colouring is purposefully Paintish. I was emulating Crimmy's style with that. I think it came out really well though, especially looking at the miniaturized version. What were you saying about the eyes? As for that one, the cloak flair is great, but I'd have to say that's really the only thing I wouldn't change on that older one >.>

Re: OotS Style Art/Fanart Showcase IV
Whoa, I really like this. I'm not sure there's too much I can say beyond repeating how awesome it is.
Nice avis, Crimmy. The drowning one is rather creepy. ._.
Very nice. The lord of slaughter seems too plain. Or rather, the head is cool and detailed while the body seems entirely out of place.
The arms are... off. The bend oddly, don't look like they attach tot he body right, and are too long. The scars just look messy unfortunately. Especially the really thin ones. And try making it so most everything has consistent line weight (especially that sword). Of, and I have to disagree with GW about the eyes. I would make the lines a lot thicker. It kind of looks like his eyes are really sunken as is.
Hm, colour transitions rarely look right in oots style I find. I would try putting a line where it changes from green to skin colour. And I would make the strings for her bikini thicker. Otherwise I quite like the avi overall.
