German: we'll be damned if we ever let it get as horribly debased as English.

Well, I still think "Death Corps of Krieg" is totally correct English, if you accept that Krieg is a place name.

I've never thought of German as an elegant language when spoken, but dammit it makes me feel home. (Or well, close to home. Even when I'm really not.)

That and every movie character I've seen speak German automatically becomes more sophisticated in my eyes than those speaking posh British.

    EDIT:

With the use of words, yes. English just has that grand vocabulary that makes a lot of things work. When spoken aloud though, English requires more effort to make it also sound dramatic in how it is said rather than just what is said. Large Hams not included. (It'd be unfair to have a German face BRIAN BLESSED for instance.)

Not sure on that one. I mean, I know English speaking people claim that German sounds harsh and so on, but to me, most spoken German sounds too soft to be really dramatic.

    On the language thing.

As a native English speaker that took German in college, I can say with great certainty that it sounds harsh, if only because it's a very throaty (and somewhat guttural) language.

Two people trying to be romantic in German sounds kind of silly.

That's mostly because in many dialects (certainly Swiss ones) the word "Liebe" - Love is not really used traditionally or doesn't even exist outside of being a loanword. So, just directly translating "romantic" things sounds really silly. Especially if the translation doesn't even fit the metrum anymore.

Off-topic: I like this "sketch". German Songmaker singing the same love song in a dozen languages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOb0bErcDyg There should be a much longer version somewhere ,but I can't find it. Ancient Greek is awesome.

    Edit: here's the generator: http://www.bodowartke.de/liebesliedg...flash_2008.php

If you think that's bad, you should watch this. The guy (Adriano Celentano), in a later interview, said that this is how English sounds to people who don't speak it. Speaking of which...

I can say for a fact that his Turkish is awful.

Might have to do with the fact that he used non-traditional synonyms to allow for better rhyming, but still, it is simply atrocious.

TinEye tracks both pictures to somewhere called SankakuComplex which seems to be an anime site, and calls the demotivator pic "Matataku". If that helps.

They're from an artist on danbooru(or at least, that's where I got those pics) called matataku. Just google "danbooru matataku" and it'll be the first site to pop up(word of warning, danbooru tends to have NSFW ads). He does some very attractive older men, some slightly odd stuff, and the occasional d'awww piece of work too, usually involving cats. I'm actually planning on putting his stuff, along with some other hunky daddies and grandpas up in the dungeons and dames thread soon. Never heard of this "SankakuComplex" before, though. Shall go rumaging through it for more mature eye-candy soon enough, though.
