I actually think CR 12 is just about right; look at the Beholder and compare their output. A Beholder gets two SoDs and Disintegrate every single turn at a single CR higher; the only real difference is Disjunction Versus AMF. The Adamantine Horror might get one of your characters, but it will die the very next round at CR 12. At CR 9 they are crazy strong, but individually I don't know if I would even put them in the TPK area, since they shoot their SLAs as standard actions.

Also, note that if you run into more than one adamantine horror you should probably call shenanigans on your DM.

Or your on Mechanus fighting for the Devils against the Clockwork Horrors that are attempting to conquer all of the Planes, and the Devils filling the same niche want to prevent them from reaching the portal to Baator. Thousands of Adamantine Horrors and millions of the rest stream across the gears towards the portal, and you watch a Pit Fiend pulled down from the sky by blazing green rays fired in prefect synchronicity. The Lawful Good Paladin cries watching the rays, and whispers "so beautiful" as the Horrors overrun your position.

Da, but fluff is up to the DM's campaign anyways; I played in a campaign where there was only 1 Orc in the entire world, and she was the mother of all humanoids.

She was immortal but not invincible, but her husband was God (capitol G). He abandoned the world, and the races were the result of interbreeding between particular siblings (4 siblings, 2 girls 2 boys, equals 4 races and 8 subraces). It was a rather normal campaign, with racial "gods" (the original 4 children) and the Mother (who remains on the planet in a cave you could visit).

So...what you're saying is, that time I threw a group of 4 adamantine clockwork horrors, 6 nimblewright warblades, and 10 phrenic psiforged wilders at my party as one of several strike forces of an invading army...I shouldn't have?

The talk about the party's items being destroyed and druids and monks being safe gives me an idea for a campaign, though. A party of a wildshape ranger, an unarmed swordsage, and [two other classes that can function well without gear or buffs], all with Vow of Poverty, fighting off the invasion of clockwork horrors all by themselves. Give the gold and platinum horrors some at-will dispelling to make them more like mini-adamantine horrors and you're good to go.

Throwing my support on top of everyone else's - this is awesome/horrifying

And this... I love. Would lead to some very confused looks at the beginning of character creation... Oh, I do like this campaign idea.

Just checked out the 2E stats of the adamantine horror. Back then it only had disintegrate at will. Maybe you can delete implosion and disjunction? Would it still have a CR of 12 in that case?

Ecology of the Clockwork Horror introduces two new variants, the Copper and Silver Horrors. If you want, I can e-mail you that stats. And no, it is not bad. Tell me how it works out.
Just checked my copy of Dragon, and the mentioned article only features the Copper Horror. Where did you find the stats of the silve one?

I think the silver horror's actually in MM2.

As I recall, MM2 had- electrum, silver, gold, platinum, adamantine.

I like the picture on the Cloud Ray. It just looks like, well, something very Arderial. (If you know what that is, there's a good chance I might love you.) Should be fun times.

I mean, sure, a lot of things will pale next to the gorram Adamantine Horror, but we all knew that when we signed up for this.

Of course, there's still plenty of horrifying stuff in here. I'm looking forward to the Elemental Weirds.

Just looking at the Corollax, and I think I've thought of this before, it can murder low level parties. Color Spray at will, DR, SR, and 17 AC, it's not going down easily either. Only thing is it can't actually deal any damage, but coup de graces can sort that out.
