    Illyrion Wildwind, Halfling Sorcerer

Illyrion has acknowledged the dwarven's presence and the following with a smile and a welcoming nod before returning back to paying attention to their surroundings. "The cart path is fine with me, besides, if the path for traveler has not been cleared yet or there was another avalanche we might have to turn back and lose precious time."

While he notices Ravinna walking up to the elven warrior, he can hardly hear them over the heavy rain. He eyes them curiously but leaves it at that. Listening in on people was for rogues and the like, his mother would have pulled his ears so hard he would have very easily passed for a small elf if she knew he was thinking about it. When the bard returns to her position, Illyrion pays it no mind anymore, returning to his escort duty.

Matrim, Ravinna, Goresh and Illyrion --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

"I was thinking the same thing." Elric replies to the group decision. "But I figured you, as experienced fighters, and would know what's best."

Peter, as expected, says nothing but nods furiously in flushed agreement.

With that the six of you head down the path on the right, walking along what used to be well worn cart tracks. The path is about thirty feet wide from wall to ledge and sturdy protective fencing is placed to prevent carts from accidentally veering off the side of the mountain. It's squishy under your boots but the years of heavy load travel have packed it tight enough to prevent it from hampering your movement.

During the next hour of travel Elric lets on a bit more about the treasure he had presented earlier.

"It's actually a pretty interesting story. See." he begins as the rain spatters his cloak. "It all goes back to when Brixham was founded..."

Elric goes on to explain how Brixham is built on solid rock except, it seems, his house, which had the living room collapse ten years ago. Nobody was hurt but the family discovered that their home had been built over top a cave system and the ceiling had finally caved in from the weight of the house.

After a couple days of exploration he, and some other villagers, stumbled upon a temple of sorts buried within the mountain and marked with marvelous symbols. The stone is apparently speckled with deep onyx and the ceilings are lined with luminous moss. Within that temple they found priceless artifacts.

It wasn't long before they had routed the unused temple and each taken a share of the grand wealth obtained from it's excavation. It's actually how Elric started his life as a merchant. A few months ago he decided to send another team into the mountain, now having the wealth and stability to explore deeper for any other possible treasure.

At about this point you come to a large, wooden bridge which looks fairly sturdy and bridges a large gap in the ascension up the mountain.

"Only another hour from this point!" Elric pipes in, excited to see home again.

"After that we used our wealth to hire some swords and a couple magical types to give the place a good once over and they came up with nothing. Easiest job they had all month one of them told me."

"Now, we've only started our exploration of the caves as of a few months ago, once we emptied the temple we realised how dangerous it could be leaving a cave system like that open so we sealed it off. I've got some well paid professionals, much like yourselves, on the job as we speak." he explains.

Ravinna listen to Elric's story, but didn't feel the need to chime in like the others. She thought the merchant had been quite sensible with his precautions; she would have likely rushed in and grabbed all the treasure she could carry as soon as she found the place! Imagine, waiting three days! The man had more patience than she did.

Besides, even if the temple was dedicated to some crazy lost god or another, they couldn't be too powerful, right? They couldn't even keep their shrine from being sealed over!

She kept one ear listening to the story, but really, she was more concerned with where their stalker had gone.

"Oww!" Ravinna cries out suddenly. "Ow, my ankle!" She immediately starts limping forward, favoring her left foot. "This stupid mud, I think I twisted my ankle stepping in it. Illyrion, you're short. Come here and take a look at it, will you?" She leans on Matrim's shoulder and waits for the halfling to come over.

Once both of her original companions are near her, she leans down and begins unlacing her boot. Her dark hair falls down in front of her face as she does so, hiding the fact that she begins whispering quietly in the pounding rain: "There are at least two people waiting at that bridge to ambush us: someone in a cloak above us, and a fuzzy monster-type at the end of the bridge. Plus, I think someone's going to push that boulder up there on us, just like they did with the caravan. Tell the dwarf if you can, too." She pulls her foot from her boot and rubs it. "Well, I don't see any swelling. I guess I'll just have to live with it," she says loudly enough for others to hear.

I'll keep me eyes out fer some wartweed juice and stingin' bush needles. Once I get me a few taterbugs ground up right good with the needles, it'll be ready fer ya!" Goresh starts looking around for the referenced plants.

Goresh glances across the bridge briefly and nods very slightly toward the group, indicating that he noticed the threat across the bridge. Hearing Ravinna's outcry and talk about a twisted ankle, Illyrion swiftly walks over to check on her. Kneeing down slightly as she unlaces her boot, he's surprised to hear what she discovered but doesn't show it and instead looks at her ankle. "Indeed, I'm no healer myself but I think it'll be fine," he says with confidence in his voice to assure their contractors everything is fine.

Illyrion walks over to their dwarven companion who still has not been informed of Ravinna's finding. "That sounds like a good idea," the halfling says with his back to Elric and his son, "Can you describe those plants to me? I'll help keep a look out for them as well." When within whisper range, however, the sorcerer quickly tells Goresh about what Ravinna has told them.

Still whispering, he adds "Also, don't worry about Ravinna. She's alright."

Subtlety has never been a trait shared by many dwarves. Goresh even less so. Once Matrim and Illyrion explain the faux injury, he chides himself for being so foolish. He does have enough sense about him to continue the ruse of searching for the poultice near his two allies. He whispers, "I saw tha two across tha bridge, but nay tha one above. I'm all fer springin' tha trap an' fightin' our way through, but we've got two needin' protectin'. We can pretend ta be stoppin' fer a meal and Ill go across tha bridge actin' like I'm lookin' fer them plants. It's too dangerous fer the merchants ta be crossin' right now."

Being no stranger to the con, Ravinna grasps Illyrion's idea immediately. "It's a dull, greyish-green sort of bush that grows around here. The leaves can be boiled into a salve, though we'll have to stop and set up a fire to do that."

She "limps" over to the bush right next to her, makes a show of checking its leaves, and announces, "No, not this one. Peter, could you and your father and check those two bushes that we just passed?" she asks, pointing to some foliage about 30 feet back the way they came. She smiles, and takes the extra effort to push her hair out of her face in a manner that, in her experience, was well-appreciated by teenage boys. "They're the ones with the diamond-shaped leaves, remember."

Turning to Matrim, she adds, "You and Goresh can check those bushes over on the other side of the bridge, don't you think?"

Basically, I'm looking at the nearest two bushes back south off the map, that we already would have passed, and getting the civvies to head that way while we spring the trap. I don't know if that's Diplomacy or Bluff, but luckily I have the same score for both.

"Of course, we'd be glad to." Elric responds for his still bashful son before heading off not far from view.

As Goresh and Matrim reach the far side of the bridge a figure reveals itself from the rocks and shouts something in elven.

<Abort the plan! Take out the bridge and drive them off!> the tall drow shouts.

The suspicious boulder and two others on the ridge unfurl themselves into what looks to be short stone dwarves. A couple of fairly large and menacing looking hyenas reveal themselves from the bushes close by Matrim and Goresh, snarling at their approach. A pair of harpies detach themselves from underneath the bridge and fly out.

Congratulations, you can link to TV Tropes. This does not mean you have special insight into the storytelling process, much less the author's mind. Stories don't need to fit into neat boxes, you know.

In my experience, most times the party is outnumbered like this at least a few of the enemies will be minions, meaning that they have normal defenses and damage for a creature of their level, but they are killed by anything that's not auto-hit. This may just be a particularly difficult fight without minions too though, so it's a good idea not to assume any of them are.

Edit: I was wrong, it's +5, so my result is a whopping 7!

Also, I believe I need to roll my Wild Soul damage type...I think I should have rolled that at the begin of the game since somewhere before the game started it is save to assume Illyrion had "extended rest" to active Wild Soul's effect: (1d10)[2]
[EDIT]: According to the chart (PHB II, p. 137), I gain resist 5 to Cold damage until the end of my next extended rest. My arcane powers ignore any target's resistance to that damage type up to the value of my resistance.

All --- [Mountain Pass to Brixham - Bridge]

A stranger reveals himself from hiding and slides down the side of the mountain to aid the party, much to everyone's surprise. He sinks two expertly timed shots into the bear sized Hyenas as he lands.

A hyena approaches Matrim and laughs nervously, failing to put Matrim and Goresh on edge before lunging at Matrim, chomping down on a vulnerable spot in his armor. Acid coats the beast's mouth and begins to burn Matrim. These are no ordinary hyenas.

The three rock dwarves begin to bombard the bridge with hefty boulders, causing fragments to splinter away. Already the bridge begins to buckle and crack under the assault. It won't last long to a beating of this magnitude.

The harpies swoop in, one landing next to Matrim and taking advantage of the distaction the hyena's give, clawing at him, the other lands on a barrier near Illyrion and the new comer, Kalek. She begins singing a beautiful song which lures several of the allies close to her and roots them on the spot.

I realise Action Points aren't usually allowed during a surprise round but it was for dramatic purposes so I let it slide.

Question for you all. Would you prefer to all go at once (ie: I lump the monsters together) or staggered initiative like this?

As per SPoD's request when she originally started this game, you have a day to post your turn, upon failure to do so it will be taken for you.

Since I can't access your sheets today, you'll have to confirm hits for me please (I confirmed what I could). You can just post whether you resist/dodge/block the attack if applicable.

SPoD. You're immobilised (assuming I didn't guess your Will wrong). This simply means you cannot move from that square. You can still make attacks as normal and draw items/weapons and you still get a move action (which you could exchange for a minor action to do more minor action stuff). At the end of your turn, make a saving throw (roll a d20), if you roll 10 or higher you save against the effect.

    Ravinna, Human Bard

Ravinna had thought she was prepared for battle, but the sudden appearance of a beast-man who was barking orders distracted her just long enough that she didn't notice the tune that the harpy was singing. Was that in G Minor? No, wait...were those chords she was singing? And why is the harpy getting bigger?

By the time she realized she was supposed to be fighting, her legs had carried her right next to the blasted thing. She drew her songblade, hoping that it was up to the task at hand. "You like music? Here, see how you like this little ditty, bitch!" The songblade swung through the air, trailing a jaunty tune of mayhem as it did.

    Spoiler

OK, let's see if I've got this:

Minor action: Declare the stupid harpy my Hunter's Quarry.
    Minor action: Draw my sword.
Standard action: Attack with Guiding Strike, +14 vs. AC, 1d6+7 damage, +1d6 for Hunter's Quarry.

(1d20+7)[13] to see if I hit. (EDIT: Whoops, that should be +14, for a total of 20)
(2d6+7)[15] for damage if I did hit
(1d20)[8] for saving throw against Immobilization.

If I hit, Guiding Strike will give it a -2 to its AC until the end of my next turn.

EDIT: I messed up the die roll for the attack, I put +7 and it should be +14, so that's not a 13, that's a 20.
