Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
I have to admire the IG. In a grimdark galaxy with aliens that want to kill them, SM and Sisters of Battle with cooler stuff than they have, and the Inquisition who keeps looking over their shoulders, they just keep plodding along.

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
Somehow, this makes me think of Russians during the Soviet era. Just switch out SM/Sisters with the US, the Inquisition with the KGB/NKVD, and the aliens with... the KGB/NKVD. 'Course, that was kinda the intention, what with the Commissars and all, but I digress. A lot.
I must repent...
But before I do - are OotS demotivators not permitted? I ask because I have not seen any, and don't remember seeing something about it in the Forum Rules.

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
OotS demotivators are allowed (to my knowledge) so long as they do not use any of the Rich's origional artwork. So quoting OotS with fan artwork is allowed (it has been done, I seem to recall a nice piece of Xykon artwork with his 'power' quote) as would quoting OotS on a OotS unrelated pic, (e.g. using any of the quotes about Paladins to accompany a picture of a Paladin from other medi,) but using a pic from the comic, edited pic from the comic, offical forum avatar, book cover, artwork from the boardgame etc. is against forum rules

The only place he can "protect" it like that is, ironically, here on the forums for his own site! Other places, it's free use (in the manner it would be employed in this thread) and the mods ANYWHERE else aren't going to stop people from doing it.
I won't get into how OotS is, you know, stick figures and anyone could just make them and say they are TOTALLY different people in a stick-figure D&D universe.Last edited by Cartigan; 2011-03-22 at 09:57 AM.

Indeed, you can. Fact is, we are here, and here the mods can stop you from using it.
The Giant has explicitly said before that anyone is free to remake his characters or (I think) scenes and use them, even tracing, as long as they don't then claim the characters as their own. Your work, no matter how similar to his, you can do whatever you want with*. His work, you can not.

Which doesn't make the absurdity any less. In fact, it only enhances it.

Moreover, how would the mods be able to differentiate a traced picture put on this thread from a simple photoshop cut out?Last edited by Cartigan; 2011-03-22 at 10:12 AM.

Let's get back on topic people! More motivators!
The relevant information on the subject is in the playground rules towards the end. Alternatively the relevant bit is here
Spoiler
Copyrighted Material and OotS Images
Using copyrighted artwork as an avatar is technically illegal unless you have the permission of the copyright holder. Even if the art is modified in some way, the original copyright still stands and you can't use it as an avatar. Rich Burlew has specifically requested that people DO NOT use his OOTS art as avatar image, other than those he has specifically provided as the default message board avatars. Also, please do not take, alter, or use the provided avatar images, comic images, or other pieces of Rich's art without express consent. If you want an OOTS-style avatar, there are many burgeoning avatar artists hanging around the Arts and Crafts forum who might make one for you.
Any avatar image that is found to be used without the permission of the copyright holder will be removed. If the creator of an avatar personally approaches the GITP staff and claims that their creation is being used without permission by another poster--as might be the case if they requested credit for the avatar and then were denied such--the Moderators will remove the avatar immediately. The first instance of this will incur a Warning, but should the member reinstate his or her violating avatar or create another avatar that also violates the rules, he or she will be issued an Infraction.
He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
His site, his rules. If he doesn't want his stuff used, he's perfectly within his rights to ban it on his website.
True, and I admit I do find it a bit silly to disallow the demotivating of his comics (is there a Word of Mod source on this ban?).
Legally, he's completely able to have whatever rules he wants on this site. He could require everyone to have an avatar of a horse's arse, and if you click "Accept Terms" when you make your account you'd better believe you're gonna have an avatar of a horse's arse.
I believe it is recommended that one put some flaws or similar in a trace if it's really that perfect. You'd be doing well to get it that perfect, though. The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
Technically, no. But that's not what I was referring to, and yes, on the site he can legally make absurd rules counter to Fair Use of copyrighted materials for his own personal stuff and enforce it with his own staff.

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
I believe he uses Photoshop or Illustrator or something like that.
And if it's so easy to get it absolutely completely and indistinguishably perfect, maybe you should give it a shot. No cheating.
The very, very best avatarists can get something that looks like it could've been drawn by the Giant himself. I haven't seen any of them try to copy exactly an OotS comic, but most other avatarists are a long way from that.Last edited by Serpentine; 2011-03-22 at 10:31 AM.

The Mod They Call Me: This conversation is off topic for this thread. If you want to continue discussing this topic then you may either create a thread in site issues or PM me.
As far as I know it's against the site rules to use Rich's artwork in any way. He has not made a caveat specifically for demotivators, so you should assume this is against the rules.

Re: D&D Demotivators III: My PCs Did What?
I'd say that all of the evil quotes are spot on, but the some of the other ones are a bit spotty, in particular Lawful Good sounds a lot more like Chaotic Good.
