I just noticed a bit of a parallel between Elan / Tarquin and Roy / Xykon. Tarquin tells Elan to go off for a few years and adventure whilst angsting, etc. before coming back for a final duel. Similarly, Xykon tells Roy to go off and level for a few years so that he can come back for a final tussel, "Hollywood style."*

In both cases the hero refuses the leave and gets soundly defeated.

To me, this is the most astounding realization in this thread. Thank you for pointing this out! I am amazed at the level of Rich's detail sometimes.

Not that panel, that's panel 6. Panel 7 does mention it.

Not quite sure how to interpret this, because the latter two were ejected when V was interrupted in the act of casting Greater Teleport.

But Xykon was acting. Not sure how to fit that into the round system--my best guess is that Xykon had a readied action (though that's more planning than I'd expect from him).

I'm pretty sure if Rich were here he'd want to smack you all for putting so much thought into the portrayed round system and the divisibility of the times he set for each splice, but that's just me.

Seeing as there's *ahem* a somewhat WIDE gap of time between the naming of the two, I'd take it as more of a clever coincidence, if anything.

yes, there is a wide gap between naming them. But V was named first and then the Giant needed to introduce a character who was 'V's Opposite'. Yeah, i'm sure it's a total coincidence.

Yeah. That. It's obviously not a coincidence; he's blatantly called Pompey because of the city. Although, if we're being pedantic about it, Pompey was acutually a Roman emperor whom the city (Pompeii) was named after.

In my defense, I was only introduced to the historical facts needed to draw this conclusion when I watched the Doctor Who episode "Fires of Pompeii" a few days ago.

Now, I've got nothing against people who take a while to get all of the references (partly because that's everybody, including me), but we do already have a thread for this.

Pompey, to be entirely pedantic, was only an emperor in the Classical Latin sense of imperator="commanding general." Moreover, as Andre points out in this thread:

And Pompeius had already been born by then.

But wait theres more: Pompey was also a roman general, an enemy of...Julius Ceaser. There's also the fact that Pompey married Ceaser's daughter...Julia. This name is meaningful of Pompey's love for Julia and the fact that he struggled to beat her.

A lot of the names seem to be Latin-based. For example, General Tarquin could be named after Tarquinius Superbus, the last king of Rome before the Republic was established.
