Also there's Meshuggah's "I", but it's over 20 mins long. It's one of the few Meshuggah songs I legitimately like (as opposed to ironically like to annoy pretty much everybody).

I see Train of Thought as the rocker and Scenes from a Memory as the journey. I'm probably simplifying this, though, as I'm sure your set of reasons in each case are different. *shrug* I will concede that ToT is definitely underrated.

*Not that there's anything wrong with a little heresy.

I should give Chemical Wedding another shot. When last I heard it, it came off as a weaker version of A Matter of Life and Death, and I ended up gravitating toward Accident of Birth which has more of a classic Maiden vibe, and hence was more what I was looking for at the time.
Hm, I don't see the connection between Chemical Wedding and AMoLaD (or really any Maiden album). Roy Z's guitar tuning and riffs don't sound like Maiden at all. Not to mention how CW is a lot darker than anything Maiden ever did. I'd be curious to see if you feel the same way after giving it another listen.

Also, new Borknagar album out. I've heard it's close to The Olden Domain, so that sounds promising. Also, ICS Vortex is back. Report to follow.

Compared to other mainstream metal they are fantastic, and they are very skilled muscisians. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.

    They just aren't my style.

Addendum: I guess on further introspection that I like them more than I thought. I am a bigger fan of Gojira in that genre, but it comes to taste. "Bleed" is one of my favorite songs to play on bass. It's a ton of fun.

That's certainly part of it. I think I also like ToT because it's a bit more personal. While I love the narrative aspect of Scenes and all the nuance and intricacy that the music brings to that narrative, it's sort of refreshing to have DT come right out with what's on their respective minds. Of course it's all being expressed through the usual wankery and complexity - I'd be disappointed if it weren't - but there's a very clear direction to the progression.

Four words: "A Change of Seasons"
Four more words: "The Count of Tuscany." I love that song, arbitrary 3 1/2 minute sad piano section, Portnoy faux-growling, and all. Actually, Black Clouds and Silver Linings is an interesting specimen with regard to the point I was trying to make, in that it sort of sits at the intersection of the things I was contrasting. Most of the songs on the album come from personal experiences and inner feelings, but its all being expressed in a way which is significantly more theatrical than on ToT.

Also, that pattern of favoring the "rocker" album tends to invert itself when it comes to my tastes in extreme metal, see my preference for the last four Death albums over the first two.

Hm, I don't see the connection between Chemical Wedding and AMoLaD (or really any Maiden album). Roy Z's guitar tuning and riffs don't sound like Maiden at all. Yeah, you're right. I don't know what I was thinking. Best I can guess is that I was really intent on finding a Maiden connection, and AMoLaD, being the darkest musically and most thematically grim of the Maiden albums, was the best I could come up with.

After you advance to Slayer, you advance to Whiplash and Artillery.

I don't know a ton about thrash, but there are a few bands I f'ing love.

So Leslie Feist and Mastodon released a split, where Feist covers a Mastodon song and vice versa. Now, I'm normally not the type to give a **** about whether something is (in)appropriately metal, but that is horribly unmetal.

I might be seeing Meshuggah/Baroness/Decapitated, but I'm rather hesitant because it is $40 and I am not really a fan of Meshuggah.

What I definitely will be seeing is Origin/Cattle Decapitation/Decrepit Birth/Aborted/Rings of Saturn (whew). I'm still amazed by the fantastic lineup of this tour.

And finally, I am planning on finally attending Summer Slaughter. May I ask if there are any others who plan on going?
