I find that to be more likely. She's the daughter of a mob boss, and she has shown that she is smarter than she seems. Her obnoxious behavior was used to distract Duane from the fact they were heading west further than he wanted to go. It seems unlikely she would be bluffed so easily.

Assuming that what Stockyard says is true... I'd guess that Sette's mission was just a way to get Duane where they want to go without him knowing what's up. Of course, he suspect something is wrong, but he doesn't know it. Sette wasn't told because Nary-a-care didn't trust her to keep her mouth shut, and she was sent because of her resemblance to Mikaila. Whether Nary wants to be rid of her or not, I'm not sure. I also wonder if Stockyard knows the whole story.

The cover of the current chapter shows a bloody Sette running away from people who are chasing her. It seems like she chose her loyalties to Duane over the mission. It is also possible she simply chose not to believe Stockyard and ended up getting confrontational.

Winalils was also mentioned in Duane's flashback. He was a friend of Duane's boss, Shadwe, which make him potentially connected to Alderode's religious and political conflicts.

The Black Tongues who Jivi and Matty are staying with implied that he was connected to the silver. Rahm mentioned patriotism as a disease. I think Duane and the silver were intended as a weapon against Cresce.

While going through the archives, I found this. Duane said if he met a more felonious and disrespectful girl than Mikaila, he would kiss a Crescian. He has met Sette, and he is in a Crescian brothel right now.

They aren't sending Duane back to Sharteshane, they're shipping him back to Alderode, along with that freaky-ass first silver.

Sette is the one who'd be getting a caravan home.

I think it might have something to do with the silver. They need to keep the silver concealed while transporting it, so they have to take a certain path. They might also want the silver and Duane to meet up before sending both to Alderode.

I'd imagine that Duane would not be terribly cooperative if he was stuck in that thing, and it could well be that after a few weeks in it, he'd be used enough to the ow to be able to do magic anyway. There's also possible geographical issues, depending on where in Alderode he's bound for, arriving by boat may get him there quicker and with less chances of getting caught.

I dunno, I'm expecting it to not work as expected. Duane either doesn't really feel pain, or has already gotten used to it. He had to replace his leg, for crying out loud.
