Sounds like your moment of truth, Sette. Will you tell Duane what's going on, or try to rationalize and sweep away the new proof of your father's being a scumbag?

She won't, tho. Duane is going in the pain inducer. Perhaps it will be her fault - for not telling him. That might be the final turning point for Sette, character development-wise.

It not just Duane's threat towards her father that's on the line here. She'd also have to admit to herself and the world at large that her father used her as a disposable patsy by feeding her stories about how she's going to be his heir. I don't think it's something she's ready to do just yet.

Eeyup. I don't think I've ever gone from hating a character as much as I've hated Sette much to feeling so very genuinely sorry for them.

Looks like she's going for the "this is a test for me" rationalization. Maybe Duane's reminiscing will at least show Sette what a real father is supposed to be.

It's basically a given that Sette is going to end up helping Duane, it's just a question of when.

Personally, I'm hoping for a "You don't get to eat my da's heart until I've had words with him." It just feels so Sette, go have an angry conversation with Da, if she doesn't like what she hears, unleash the attack zombie.

I get what you're saying, but Duane was actually kind of a terrible father. Though I guess "real" doesn't necessarily mean "good." He is at least better than Nary, whose negligence, abuse and indoctrination of Sette does pretty much make it seem like he ain't got no love for her and doesn't really qualify as a "real father" at all. Wonder if he even is, biologicall speaking.

The only particularly bad thing we've seen him do fatherwise would be not encouraging pymary due to social norms. Which, you know, is considered normal for them. Might look bad from our everyone is a special snowflake that should be allowed to chase their dreams to the fullest outlook, but our world is slightly different from theirs.

Indeed. Given the circumstances, Duane was as good a father as one can expect. He wanted what was best for his daughter, it's just that what he considered best for her was skewed due to his country's oppressive patriarchy and caste segregation. Nary, on the other hand, is heavily implied to have regularly abused and neglected her... and is quite certain to have used her as an oblivious pawn.

There was never a way for it not to end in a disaster. Especially after the job of transporting the silver was given to Starfish, of all people.

    Speaking of Starfish...

Very few characters in webcomics are as loathesome as that sob. I do hope he dies very slowly and very painfully on screen.

Shudder at the thought of him transporting Sette (or any other child) anywhere.

It's not addiction. He's got some sort of heart condition that would have killed him if Winnalis hadn't provided him with some experimental Black Tongue pymary to keep his heart going. So now he's in his pocket. Not an enviable position.

I don't think we can call it addiction if it's literally the only thing keeping him alive.

He still remains a treacherous coward... but to use the words of Manzoni "If one doesn't have courage, he cannot just give it to himself".
A coward? I don't think so. It's hardly fair to ask someone to sacrifice their own life, which is basically what defying Winalils would mean for him. If he doesn't cooperate, the treatment stops, and so does his heart.

There are people that choose death over treason. And now that he knows that there is a treatment, how could he be certain that Winalils is the only one in the world that can give it to him?
He knows that what he's doing is wrong, but ('til now) he's choosing the easy way. He's very human in this, but you are judged by your actions... the motivations behind them, are a mitigating circumstance, not a total excuse.

I'm fairly sure the "treatment" was a pymaric graft. Winalils could totally take it away, but then, anyone can cut out a pymaric graft if they have a knife and a willful disregard for human life.
