So her justification is 'just business', not 'he's testing me'. Poor kid. Her father appears to be a right bastard from the scraps of information we have about him.

in good and bad, he's her father. Of course she lies to herself.

Good thing she didn't eat the pie that Duane couldn't possibly have baked himself, though.

Well - in principle, he could have bought it.

But anyways - she knows, right? Her nose is extraordinary, she smelled the whatever in the pie instantly - also, that glance towards the door. Unsure what she sees or thinks, but she's definitely on to it. I bet we saw that trap on the door for a reason too. She's gonna dodge through, and someone else is going to trigger it.

According to Ashley's blog, the pie was a perfectly honest one that Duane bought on his way there.

To keep this thread alive during this extra-long hiatus, if you had Duane's magical powers in the real world, what's the first thing you'd do with them?
I have my own TV show featuring local musicians performing live. YouTube page with full episodes and outtake clips here.
I also have another YouTube page with local live music clips I've filmed on my own.
Then there is my gaming YouTube page with Kerbal Space Program, Minecraft, and others.
Finally, I stream on Twitch, mostly Kerbal Space Program and Minecraft.

Damn near unrivalled magica prowess? In a world otherwise bereft of all such? In which case 'unrivalled' would be rather literally true ...

I've been amusing myself during the hiatus by reading the archives of the in-character Formspring for Duane and Sette. There's quite a lot of it, and many answers are pretty interesting.

Enrich myself by fair means or foul. We haven't really seem alchemy show up, so there goes my brilliant plan to turn dirt into gold dust, but I have a backup plan. Borrow the pressure from a mountain and the heat from a volcano (easy enough if you just go to Hawaii and get both in one fell swoop) and compress a few large lumps of carbon into some Hope Diamond-sized shinies. Or I guess I could go into the special effects business and run the world's most incredible magic show.

And then there's always the 'foul' part of it, which is mostly about shifting solidity around to, ah, liberate items. Helloooooo Ft. Knox!

Poor bastard. Elan really doesn't want to keep working for Stockyard, but he also kind of wants to keep breathing. I foresee things going even worse for him. I have a feeling things will go horribly wrong for pretty much everyone, in this chapter.

I'm so happy Elan did the right thing! This is a Crapsack enough World that I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.

Man, it felt weird writing that first sentence, cuz I'm used to thinking of the other Elan--y'know, blonde guy, carries a lute everywhere--I mean, of course that Elan's gonna do the right thing.

I'm just happy we don't have a beheading occurring. I've been dreading that being the outcome from since we last saw Elka before the long break.

I see a heroic sacrifice heading Elan's way. Then again, defying Winalils is effectively signing his death sentence, so in a way it already happened.

Random attempts at foretelling the future:

    Elan Aled shall:

    - Also save Emil Tomas life
    - Do so riding a haunted construct
    - Losing his own life in the process

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and state that the last words he hears will be Emil Toma ... telling him something along the lines of 'rest easy, Peaceguard - you fought well.'
