Blessed Are The Sick and Covenant are both a bit thicker sounding and a bit less full-speed-ahead than Altars. In general, I'd say they're not quite as consistently good but they're solid records overall.

Ever heard of Artillery? They've had a few singers over the years. Flemming Ronsdorf is still probably the definitive voice of the band, but Soren Adamsen was also good, and the new guy that they recently got seems solid as well. Or Testament maybe? I think that Chuck Billy has a cool voice. Then there's Bobby Blitz from Overkill, who won me over after a while, and I like Joey Belladona as well, though I suspect if Anthrax were up your alley you'd have been won over to Thrash before now.

Or, for harsher vocals, I like Kreator, Destruction, and some Thrash revival bands like Havok and Warbringer.

I can relate to not liking the vocals in thrash though, James Hetfield is downright unlistenable, and Tom Araya completely ruins Reign In Blood for me.

There's certainly elitism in this thread, but it originates from several different, and usually contradictory, viewpoints. To really draw the thread's collective ire takes some doing.

Exist is the first track off Sovereign Descent, it is not as consistently blasting as Shadows Fed to Tyrants, and it has slower and more melodic segments, so it might be more up your alley.

Those Morbid Angel tracks were good, I will definitely have to listen to more.

I actually didn't realise how old Venom was until recently, or how influential they were.

On an entirely different note, I've always wanted to know who the first bands to pig squeal were. Pig Squealing interests me. Well, all forms of screaming do, but Pig Squealing is just something I'd like to learn more about.

The attitude of the Metal Thread has changed quite a bit since I first started lurking/posting. As the make-up of posters changed, the elitism of the thread has changed. I just never thought about that change until now.

The with the "this is my smiling face" threw me off. It isn't that I don't like any other DM bands besides Sympathy, I've just never bothered seeking out more DM after I found them. I'm sure I'll music-swing back to that category eventually.

I liked Overkill and Havok the most out of those. I thought Testament was ok, and the rest I didn't care for. Thanks for the suggestions.

Every time I wear my Slayer shirt around about one in five people yell "Slayer!" at me. It got to the point where my nickname for a long time was Slayer.

It got annoying fast. Still like them though. I liked thrash for a while back when I was younger but mostly it's just dull now for me, no real movement (same could be said for "Trve Kvlt black metal"). I still listen to some early Sodom though when I want to get in a get s*** done mood.

Testament are a local band for me, so I respect them on that ground.

On the topic of Venom, I still listen to Black Metal now and then. I like the song "USA for Satan" just for the cheese factor.

An open letter to Dave Lombardo from Lich King

    Spoiler
    Show

    Mr. Lombardo

What with your contract woes with Slayer, it seems you are now no longer a member. Well, Dave, they say with every door that closes, another opens. A big door with our logo on it has just swung wide.

That's right, you just got called up to the big leagues. We'd like to invite you to drum for Lich King.

We are the world's premier unsigned western Massachusetts thrash metal band, and a position with us carries a great deal of clout and privilege. In addition to the twelve dollars we can give you out of our pay split after EVERY SHOW, we are willing to offer you a signing bonus of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS and one (1) gift certificate for $20 at Red Robin.

    Your duties will include

    • Drumming

    • Hauling gear

    • Driving long hours on tour

    • Providing us with a practice space because ours belongs to our current drummer Brian

    • Booking tours (also a Brian duty)

    • Doing the band accounting (another Brian job)

    • Recording and producing our albums (Brian again)

    • Telling Brian he's fired

A caveat: we already have a Dave in the band, and to avoid confusion, you will have to pick a different first name. I think Steve Lombardo has a nice ring to it, but the choice is yours so long as it does not clash with any of our names and it passes our approval by a majority vote.

If you accept our terms, there will of course be an audition. We can't just let you in without seeing what you can do. Practice up on any three of our songs. We can send you the mp3s to practice to (we will deduct the 99 cents per song from your future earnings) and can schedule your audition at your convenience.

    We await your response.

    Cordially

    -Tom, Dave, Joe & Rob

    LICH KING

    OH GOD MY SIDES.

And Lich King are fairly decent, too.

A couple days ago I had Malmsteen's concerto for electric guitar playing in the background while doing other stuff, and a friend walked in and asked me why I'm listening to "classy music". Heh.

Well, if you actually go through with it (and I hope you do ) then you should take it in stages. Start with your top tier of Metal bands and work your way down to probably about your third tier. After that you could do your top tier or two of music outside of Metal. The rest after that is fine in whatever order you like. 500 musicians/bands/artists/composers is a good final number, because most people will probably not even listen to all 500 even if they are all godly, but you can do as many as you want/can. I think around 50-100 bands to start with is good.

Thrash has been a drunk art form since it's conception.

I'm with Nameless on the band lists. Most of us could probably write book series on why we like the bands that we do, followed by several novellas on why one band is better than the other.

So many crossover genres... so many...

Okay, I'll try and give this some kind of structure. This is in a very vague genre order, as opposed to favorite to least favorite. There's no way I could place them in that order.

I'm with Nameless on the band lists. Most of us could probably write book series on why we like the bands that we do, followed by several novellas on why one band is better than the other.
It started because it music scene wasn't trve enough.
