"One. I do not appreciate your words directed to the quality of our goods. Our jewellery is just as exquisitely crafted as yours, and with enchantments the overall quality is likely superior. But I will not get in to this argument.
Two. The Goblins. We did not hire them, as you may think, to take Hobbespot from you. We hired them because, one, we wanted labor. A better barracks for the Millford Guard, a center for our mages, bigger shops for the smiths and artisans who we help employ, you name it. Two, we underestimated how many Goblins our money would purchase, we thought it would only be enough for a small portion. It was not our intention to take influence over the neighborhood away from you. However, with this new-found influence, we wondered if we could fulfill a goal of ours -- get rid of the games entirely. That was what our message to the Underwood and Silviat families was about. If this concept is completely disgusting to you, we can withdraw our planned meeting entirely.

While we are generally in favor of improving conditions in this city of ours, we hesitate at your use of the term "tax." The implication that a higher authority has the right to levy fees on the Mint is a dangerous one. Furthermore, the funds of our organization must be very carefully controlled, so as to meet our obligations for loans and interest payments. The Exchange runs on coin, good King, it lives and breathes the flow of wealth, and tapping that flow is akin to draining blood from a healthy body. The side effects may be subtle, but I assure you that they are there, and they may be dire.

Nevertheless, the Exchange also has a grand tradition of public works and improvement to Sav Altulas, so participating in a project the likes of which you are proposing for your "tax" money may not be so distasteful to us. However, we would appreciate it if you would give us some time to determine just what that project is going to be, as well as examine our internal funds to ensure that we do, in fact, have sufficient monies.

Well, that's what the leaders of the Far Tippest thought, when I warned them about danger of Blackfists. An orator
A man appears before the King, with a letter on his hand bearing the sigil of house Wallen.
He is well dressed and introduces himself as John Amrose, a city nobleman.
The letter is directed to the King:

    Your most Gracious Majesty:
After very long investigations I have found this man and I'm sending him to you for tutelage.

His name is John Amrose, and his family is one of the older, most noble families in this city.

He has shown great capabilities for diplomacy, and his education is excellent.
He speaks six languages fluently; and most importantly, he is very charismatic (And has a good sense of humour), but he is more than capable to send a strong message to a big crowd.

His father died before the sorceress and he thought any chance he had of entering the political Arena was gone. He stayed out of the picture, and has never supported any Noble group (Such as my Party, Lord Matoff's, or the ESGE) so he will heed your Majesty's words alone.

It is my hope that you will protect him and give him a position in your Court (we have talked about the need Your Majesty has of an Orator and it is my opinion he would be very competent on the task)

    Your Loyal servant, Lord Wallen

The young man looks at the king while James reads the letter. He is in control of himself (In fact he looks relaxed); despite this being a moment that could define his career.

    Taxes
Your Majesty, the idea of returning to tax the population is a good one. However I'm using all the funds I have for the rebuilding of Dogma (I have taken a loan that will make matters complicated in the next few turns).
I must confess I didn't prepare myself for this eventuality. May I ask you for a favour? I offer my men to help in the Palace recovery project or in any other mission if you need them.

Yeah, uh, no offense, but you kind of are an out-of-touch University academic. I mean, Tippest, that's practically part of Daimot. They're even in the same place, if you fold the city in half (which you would be stupid not to--it makes getting around so much easier). And even if I were to take your hypothetical real-world as truth, I am afraid I must challenge your perception of this situation as at all similar to Tippest. For example--and this is just one example, mind--I have three heads in my closet. I doubt even the richest overseer of Tippest could boast so many.

Your core assumption, however, seems to be that Longspeak is a source of power, and that by "fixing" the fractured effect around it you can gain some of that power for yourself. This assumption is so incorrect as to be dangerous, both to yourself and to your children. No one can control Longspeak. Sometimes, Doctor, you cannot heal that which is broken, only do what you can to contain the damage. This is not one of those situations, but you would do best to treat it as such.

    P.S.: Because it's fun.

We would rather not get any hands in pies as many of those pies are ours. However it is always advantageous to know when someone is going to require more sausages before they get around to sending a courier. If you could bring us the rumors on the street of what people are talking about we would be greatful to the tune of [1 wealth] of sausages per month. We are also willing to offer another month's worth for the right to bring our tunnels under Fat Tippest.

We don't see any benefit to sending inspectors into our tunnels. To put it bluntly our engineers are much better at constructing ways through the underside of Sav Altulas than anyone else. And we are not mere greedy merchants to perform shoddy workmanship on our own tunnels. But still if you wish to inspect the tunnels below Old Town we see no harm in it. Just warn your men to be cautious of the Lizard Ways. We have schedules to keep and our lizards do not take kindly to stopping unexpectedly.

As for field offices you already have one in Guild's Row do you not. Why not simply expand there. I am sure you can find an empty guild house with ample resources to serve all of the Gilded District.

Oh, what kind head-spikers are these, that come to slay us with gold and wine! Funny that you should mention Tippest, actually--a little man with a little finger came by, and now I have a full furniture set from a manor house there. I can see how you might view being given such gifts as a tragedy, however, what with the obvious parallels to your mother and all. My sincerest condolences.

As for the Tower, its original use is irrelevant. It is broken. Shattered. You know how they call these the Shattered Lands? It started here, Doctor, at Longspeak. This is where the blow that broke Talidor fell. The human mind cannot relate to that sort of history. Many have tried, I assure you. The curious we never hear from again, the powerful we watch die, and the clever--of which we have only had one--return to us in one piece. Can you imagine the horror? One piece! He had not a scratch on him! We put the poor man out of his misery, of course. It was the only humane thing to do.

And I told you the answer to your final question already. We fight because it is fun. And because the stars and the moon do not care who rules, but we do. We fight because that is the nature of us mortals, to strive towards greatness, despite the posse of fools we may, in occasional fits of insanity, call friends, who try to drag us back down.
