He explained cheerfully. The hook-ups weren't exactly spells themselves, but little bits a unicorn with enough talent could use to more easily fuse two spells together for more complicated effects.

He scraped his forehoof on the carpet and pinned back his ears as he examined the bits and pieces.

"Well, let me take a look at it." She says, pulling it towards her with telekinesis and looking over it carefully. After about a minute, she gives Pyrite her verdict. "You accidentally used a low powered lightning spell rather than a light spell. Understandable mistake." she says, and uses dispel magic on the lightning enchantment. "How about a spell similar to those used in lighthouses? Does about what you're looking for, and shouldn't result in another lightning spell. Unless something in the spyglass itself is making the magic go wonky." she says to Pyrite.

"Ooh, that may work...Though I've never seen a lighthouse, so I don't know what sort spell they use there."

Pyrite was, ultimately, about halfway self-taught, so his spell knowledge was a little spotty. Still...He was pretty sure all his hookups were right, so the sort of spell she was suggesting would probably work.

She showed him how to do it himself. The spell itself was simple, it was putting the right amount of energy into it that was the hard part. Too little, and it didn't do its job. Too much, and it interpreted it as lightning, not light. After she was done, Pyrite's spyglass should work perfectly.

He said with an enthusiastic smile.

"You're welcome, Pyrite. Is there anything else I can do for you?" she asks him. She decides to keep eye contact rather than immediately go back to what she was reading before Pyrite walked in.

"Well, let me toss that back... I don't like owing someone; anything I can do for you?"

The rest of the prototype problems were, after all, problems he had identified early on, and could fix with a bit of research and grunt-work.

He asked, looking around. As far as he knew, there hadn't been a sound.

"Never mind. Either the voices in my head are trolling me further, I'm slowly going insane, or some supernatural being is trying to play with my head." Smoothie said, as if this were an every day occurrence. Oh wait. They live in Bridle Shores. It probably is.

"So, would you like some cookies, or fried mushrooms, or some other snacky food?" she asked. Hey, he came to visit boring, depressing old her. Might as well reward him for that, right?

Pale Night seems fond of the fried mushrooms idea. "Mushroomsmushroomsmushroomsmushrooms!" Despite the exclamation point, she was still relatively quiet. She clearly knew how to act in a library.

"No, you're not allowed to have them more than once a week, they aren't healthy when you eat too many too soon." Smoothie says, sounding an awful lot like a concerned mom.

"Awwww." Pale Night says in response.

"Eh, just a cryptic bit of dialogue, I'm sure it's nothing important." Smoothie says. "What kind of cookies do you like?" She asks Pyrite. "I've got the ingredients for just about anything."

This seemed somehow more surprising than cryptic mysterious voices of mystery. It just seemed...Well, actually, if he thought of it as some sort of exacting chemistry, he could buy it from Smoothie much better.

"Just chocolate chip is fine."

"Yeah. Not the best at it, but unless they're godawful, cookies are cookies are cookies." Smoothie responds.

To be fair, she grew up with Soft Serve and Pinkie Pie.

"Alright. I'll go put some in the oven real quick." She leaves for a couple minutes, and Pale Night and the foal go along with her. She comes back later, with the unnamed foal on her back with Pale Night.

"Should be ready in about 18 minutes." She says. "Don't worry, I'm keeping track of them from here." She has an egg timer set to about 14, since it takes her a bit to get to the kitchen, and better safe than sorry.

"Usually I read about spellcasting, practice my spells, try experimenting with magic others haven't used much before, do a little arts and crafts, sing, maybe play a card game...but mostly studying magic." she says.

"Yeah, that I can see. Working on anything I can help with, even just as a guinea pig?"

He wondered if this was an invitation to turn him into a guinea pig.

"Not unless you can spontaneously become an Earth pony paragon and were willing to potentially die, were willing to be the subject of things that only had the potential to turn you into an alicorn, or feel like being the subject of a spell that has the intention of irreversibly changing a pony's gender. If those aren't your speed, I've got those silly spells that make one grow silly facial hair as well. she says, levitating a book on cutie marks over for her to read.

"Basically, yes. I got bored and decided to make somebody look like Santa pony. He loved it." Smoothie says to Pyrite. "And yeah, important stuff. Doubt I'll ever succeed at any of it, but yes." She says, counting down the minutes until the cookies are ready.

"Do you mind telling me why that is, or would you prefer to keep it private?" Smoothie asks Pyrite. "If it's that big of a deal though, I could just teach it to you myself. I just tend to give ponies pages so they can put them in their own personal spellbooks." Smoothie explains.

'If you're with someone, you've got to be with them.'...I guess I was so scared of getting yelled at again that it became a habit when I had someone with me, to try not to go off into myself; it's why I kind of tried not to have someone with me."

Whether he learned the spell at here or at home didn't matter too much...It was just one of the weird little triggers of the psyche. There were things he didn't feel right doing, even if it made no difference to anyone else.

Smoothie says, starting up at the hat on her head momentarily. "...I know she's long gone, but it still seems like she hasn't really left. I'm not sure why." she looks like she's considering setting her hat aside for a moment, but doesn't. She just sighs a bit and seems to stare off into space slightly.

Something about Smoothie seems slightly...off today.
