Isn't it odd that half of the main cast have government jobs (assuming Fluttershy is a Ranger/Warden). It's almost like somepony... PLANNED them to be assigned in the same town.

"Half" sounds like a lot, but then you take into account that hree isn't that many.

The Cider episode is bad because of it's complete lack of understanding of economics and how flagrant it is in that ignorance. I could almost forgive it because of it's great song and so forth but then AJ has that smug bit about already knowing the lesson at the end and I just want to punch her in the face.

They should have just driven a harder bargain with the Flim Flam brothers to begin with, and made bank. Instead...

Yes, this was a big problem with the show. I can forgive character errors, wonky economics, bad writing, but the letter on the end literally kills the ep. Not only AJ is completely wrong, the letter is just... insulting, both literally and to intelligence of audience

Compare it to last ep - Pinkie of all ponies, someone with a social grace of a brick written something relevant and at the same time did her best using protocol forms of address. This how it should look, IMHO.

And the strange Luddite message the episode ends up with is not something I want kids to be learning.

Dam with large magical power plant, factories capable of making trains, computers, zeppelins and railroads, food processing, weather control, finally all the magical gadgets. However we look at it, that's virtually every sector of modern industry.

Anyways perhaps it could be duplicated, but right now it simply isn't worth the effort considering it is only slightly more efficient then just hiring more ponies.

Except, it can produce continuously, steady quality, without exhaustion, expertly scanning feedstock. Had the race not lasted few hours, but a week, FF would won regardless of help AJ could muster.

However it could also be that the Flim Flam bros weren't negotiating in good faith. They offered a deal that they knew would ruin Sweet Apple Acres and when that was refused they decided to take over through sheer competition instead. They never had any intention of having a mutually beneficial deal.

How?

Let's assume they do want negotiate in good faith. What deal should they make? AJ made it clear there will be no cooperation, the only possible way left for them to make any profit at all is to sell their cider on the expense of hand made one, or pack and go to another city.

They then propose a bet that heavily favors themselves where they stand to lose nothing and gain everything. That, more than anything else, marks it as a scam, and marks the Apples as poor businessponies.

Uhm, ok. So, to sum your argument, FF started trying to push Apples into completely one sided deals? Well, ok, but they did it only when their initial offer was meet with 'heck no'. That still doesn't make it 100% ethical, but I am not sure if I can blame someone for not playing along when he heard there will be no game at all.

As the providers of Ponyville cider, the Apples have the benefit of a monopoly. They are local, established, and have a following already. In order for the Flim Flam brothers to compete, they must find a way to obtain enough apples for their speed advantage to matter. That would imply travel, transportation expenses, and finally finding a spot to sell their product. If we were dealing with semi-modern businesses, they'd have to get a business license as well.

As it is, the Apples have supply and demand. Even if the Apples and the Flim Flam Brothers strike a deal, the only advantage is speed of production; to pay for the rent of the machine, they'll have to sacrifice apples that would otherwise be sold for a profit.

Consider a fifty-fifty split. Even if they're making five times the amount of cider, they're losing money on the deal. If they make 100 apples' worth of cider by themselves and 200 apples' worth with the machine, then they get the same amount of money for twice the amount of apples.

Even if the Apples are getting the great majority of money from the cider sales, they're still losing money unnecessarily. The only reason for the Apples to cooperate with the Flim-Flam brothers is if the cider season is too short to process all the apples they would like.

Correction: only one example seen, which we've only seen the operators use. Consider the example of a specialized racecar. It's obviously something you don't see every day, and only certain people are allowed to operate it. However, there's no reason to assume that it's a prototype.

When your profits are your means of survival through the winter, what is the appropriate reaction to a pair of unicorns coming and asking you to use your apples to give them a huge profit while you starve? "Heck no" seems reasonable to me.

I could understand a 75:25 opening offer; it only makes good sense to offer a high deal so when they haggle, you get a better deal. My concern is that when the Apples said no, Flim and Flam made no attempt to haggle at all. An unreasonable offer followed by no attempt to haggle displays that they had no intention of giving the apples a reasonable offer in the first place, thus showing a lack of good faith.

I'm not sure why this is important to you, but whether the stallion is a unicorn or not, he's clearly somewhat uncultured and of a different class than Rarity would like to style herself as. It's his character and what that says about her background that make him important, not whether he's got a horn.

I feel that this needs to be responded to. It seems to be a recurring topic for you, t209, but it's beyond most of the posters why it's such a important detail. As a whole, Rarity's parents could be a donkey and a horse, it effect's nothing about her parent's charecter or herself.

From our perspective yes, but from AJ's perspective:

Dear Princess Celestia, I wanted to share my thoughts with you... *ahem* I didn't learn anything! Ha, I was right all along! If you take yer time to do things the right way, yer work'll speak fer itself. Sure, I could tell you I learned somethin' about how my friends are always there ta help me, and I can count on them no matter what, but, truth is, I knew that already too.

She's not technically wrong. Taking your times does improve chances for better quality with one's work and AJ does know she can count on her friends to help her when she needs them.
Probably one of the few moments her Element of Honesty works out.


I personally find the letter hilariously amusing since it does break the usual format everyone else writes them. But yeah, outside of AJ's perspective this letter feels like it went with some different episode.

Regarding the Apples and FlimFlam Brothers Negotiations:
If the Apple family had been (signifcantly) less honest, they could have used the Flim Flam Brothers own wording against them by accepting the deal. This hinges on the fact that Flim (or Flam, I forget which) specified that they'd be splitting the cider "profits", which in accounting terms would be the net proceeds, as opposed to the cider "revenue", or the gross proceeds. The Apples could have, in theory, simply allocated all of Sweet Apple Acres' overhead costs to cider production, thus eliminating any profits and leaving Flim and Flam empty hooved.
