See, that was my first thought, then I realized it was more like "Hey buddy, here's a letter. If I die this trip, deliver it to my wife. Thanks."

That's what I assumed too. He didn't specify how he'd died, he just wrote that he had, and told his friend to send it to his wife if he doesn't make it back from his trip.

That part i understand. It's the specific reference to the unforgiving rapids that puzzled me.

That said, Bertrande's reaction is very interesting, and it's pretty much the entire point of this tale, I believe.
Decisely, she won't be friendly with a spirit of nature...

"He ran away with his lover and she killed him". In a way, that's what happened... no wonder Bertrande ended up so surly.

The comments to the effect that Snow deserves being tortured because she's supposedly too arrogant really squick me out.

The "she's not human, whatever" ones are pretty bad too.
I would really like to see a game made by Obryn, Kurald Galain, and Knaight from these forums.

Yeah ... it's kind of a tradition for people in genuinely dangerous jobs, who have someone they genuinely care for, to write out ahead of time an apologia for getting killed doing something they loved. Usually accompanied by directions as to who has the true copy of their will and testament, or sometimes incorporating that. Then they leave the letter with someone who's not going likely to be killed along with them.

As already said, the unclear part, was the specific reference to the unforgiving rapids. Unless you have a wide array of letters, regarding various circumstances of death...

Either that or the unforgiving rapids are a particularly dangerous hazard that are dealt with often. Given that we saw a boat, this seems likely to me.

So I just caught up on this. I've gotta say, I really like the feel of the whole thing. The touches of cinematic-style action (particularly in the acrobatics) are very nice and while I evidently need to go and find whatever the hell this Almanac is, the world as seen in just the comic is fascinating and intriguing. I kinda wish various fantasy authors and RPG companies gave even a quarter the damns you do - they'd still end up with better products.

When it comes down to it, Blaise is in quite a lot of trouble. He did break into Bertrande's house, and I doubt that a spirit is treated as a person by the laws of the colonies... so Jassart and Bertrande weren't doing anything wrong, technically speaking.

The general Almanac headers are here; the entry I'm referencing is this one, which off-hand references one of the dangers of alchemy. If you check the site from here you'll get a link to the current comic page and (down and to the left) to the current Almanac entry so you can always find the newest stuff.

That's the one. The voyageur faced rapids a lot. Google "Ottawa river rapids" or "French River rapids" and you'll see plenty of examples of the rapids that they faced. They were often named for the voyageurs who died in them.

Hrm. Galadhion, I wonder if you might be willing to do an aspiring comic writer a favor and release what one of your page scripts looks like before it gets art and the like, maybe talk a bit about the creative process that goes into setting and framing a scene?

Earth, air, fire, water. The four base elements. Elements are the next section of this almanac entry. I can add in a (see below) to refer readers down there if you think it is confusing without.

How's Air present in gold? It's kinda heavy, and while it's soft, it doesn't seem to have any qualities of Air in it at all.
