I'm back from a two week stay at our ancestral farm. I don't really have a lot of pictures from there, but in the midst of it, we conducted a three days trip to the mountains for some backpacking.

In the first day, we walked from there...



... to there...


... and in the last day we took the same way back.
(All pictures taken from the same place)

In the second day, we walked from there, those slightly off centre grey stripes down in the valley, beyond the stream (1040 metres above sea level)...


... to there, the highest top (1762 metres above sea level) of a group of mountains called "Sylarna". It's the leftmost side of the flat-looking double top in the middle of the picture.

Here's me sitting on the top cairn.


On the way down, I figured out that you could slide down the snow fields at immense speed, thus saving a lot of gruesome climbing and having an amazing amount of fun on top. Here you can see the final parts of my path as the two rightward diagonals in the middle of the picture connected by a leftward diagonal trail. Most of this slope was traversed sitting, but on the section you can barely see higher up on my trail, I actually slided on my stomach.


On the second snow field, I figured that the most fun course of action was to just slide all the way down on my stomach like a seal. You can't quite appreciate the height here, but it was almost as high as in the first picture, although not as steep in the beginning.

If there's one thing which is a constant up there, then it's the gardening work. You have no idea how much grass loves growing



Staring contest with a car. It looks kinda doofy, actually.


Nothing spells summer like ice-cream and having to squint for the sun.


Brushing up our family grave. Or more specifically, cleaning lichen off my great aunts little tombstone, barely visible before my left foot.


On our way up to the mountains. You can see the temperature varies a bit between the days.


And here we've started walking. And as you probably notice, it's even colder up there, mostly falling in the range I would expect of mid spring.


Completely spontaneous surprise photo. This kind of pose just happens naturally to everyone up there.


The sun wasn't actually particulary bright or frequent that day, but I had a sensitive cornea and needed to protect my eye from the wind. Plus, polarised lenses makes it easier to look beneath the surface of any water you may come across.


In the second day, my eye was good again, but there was both sun and snow now, so now they could serve their intended purpose.

Did I mention water? Because the only commodity which isn't scarce in the mountains is water. Which is a good thing, because you need lots of it when walking.



And finally, here's how my parents look now.

They'll get better, but until then I'll savour the elevated household responsibilities. And by "savour", I mean "stress over".

Not this year, no. That's a rake. We got a local with a tractor to cut all the fields surrounding the house, so there wasn't a lot to put a scythe to this time.

And they tried downhill bicycling, and went a little too fast or a little to long for their ability, so now mum's got a fractured arm and dad a broken rib and collar bone. They're healing though, so they're a lot more mobile now than then, even though you can see that especially mum is in quite a lot of pain from time to time...

Besides being blasted with fancy wedding photos of royal families in the media, I don't think I've seen fancy photos like that ever in my life from a wedding, nor any occasion, really.

To be fair, I think the invoice listed them as pink, or dusky pink, or something like that. Not that I have an issue with wearing clothes or accessories that are unambiguously pink in any case.

I am that guy who spent most of his life being told that "sorry, we don't carry hats in your freakish size"... who at the tender age of 37 finally found 2 hats that actually fit.
