    • [Mil][2/5] Continue construction on the Syana Ignato National Defense Academy in Woodwind.
    • [Mil] Assign 1000 naval troops to work with Mtambuzi Madhav. They are to search for whatever remains of the Watcher or her brood in URJ or international waters.

Finally the fruits of decades of labor payed off. With a national railroad network constructed food and raw materials could be moved across the nation like never before. Trips that used to take weeks were reduced to days. It was the dawning of a new era.
Prerequisites: Railroads in all regions, Trains, Cold Car Tech
Effect: One stack of each food resource from your regions may be added to a pool. All contiguous regions you control count as having access to all resources in the pool as if they were importing them regularly. This does not function for kingdoms separated by water, or nations they do not have trade treaties with(regions separating your kingdom must also have railroads).
    • [Dip] Attend the Grand Ball
    • [Dip] Host the UJR-EoD Peace Conference
    • [Secret][Luck 5] (cause I suck at dice : /)

Spoiler: Letter on Woman of Cridan
    Show

To the Visionaries of the Carmel Kingdom, the Oracles of the UJR, to mystics across Telluris, and to all the Children of the Mother,
The Children of Kina wish to express to you all the disdain with which the Tyranny of New Crima is treating the visions of the Woman of Cridan. Starting in 526, many of us have had disturbing visions of her imprisonment. Investigations by the Chosen have determined beyond their doubts that some powerful force lies within the howling plains of Cridan. Some force capable of extending her influence into the dreams and visions of sensitive people around the world.
The Seaborne Confederation has made attempts to extend aide to the Cree to further investigate this phenomenon. They have met with polite, but firm rebuttal, trusting to their secular forces to handle the situation.
Have they learned nothing from the Watcher in the Water? Beings of great mental power have motivations and influences that can be dangerous if left unchecked. Not just a danger to the local denizens, but potentially the entire planet. To leave ‘handling’ such a potential creature in the hands of secular forces, no matter how potent, risks disaster.
As the Eldest Child of Kina, I call upon all Children to petition the Tyranny government to allow a multi-regional expedition to take the lead in such discoveries. To the leaders of other religious orders, I entreat you to take such a potential threat seriously, and pressure the Tyranny to act in a manner consistent with civil behavior. To the leaders of the nations, please do not take this situation lightly, lest the price to stop it become too dear through inaction.
Silene Onerogin, Eldest Child of Kina.

Default Re: [EMPIRE!] A World-Building Game of People & Discovery

Actions for the UJR Senate, Round 41

    1[Req Curiosity 5]
The first Illuminators complete their training in Ayava, having learnt their craft from the founders of the fresh-fledged Greater Art. Since the initial breakthrough, many trainees have struggled with the new extension of their teaching, especially the older ones who had learnt much of Illumination when it was an Art bound to physical anchors. Needless to say, it is with considerable joy that the College of Illumination welcomes these graduates into the ranks of full Illuminators. And it heralds a great change in the direction of the province, one started decades ago with the founding of the College. Ever since, the scholarly population has gravitated ever deeper into the orbit of the College of Illumination. The techniques and possibilities unlocked by the breakthrough into the realms of Greater Illumination completes this process. No more will the great libraries and colleges of Ayava produce simple scholars. Illuminators will walk from the province now, to enshrine knowledge yes, but in ways truly unlike those of their predecessors.

Convert the Scholars resource in Ayava into Illuminators.
    2[Req Curiosity]
Complete the connection of Qarimos to the Republican Road Network. Whilst trains are a godsend to many, they cannot reach everywhere, and the completion of this project brings the far flung fishing villages of the province together in a nodal system surrounding the rail connections. [2/2]
    3[Curiosity]
Recognising the good works done by the Ministry of Mentality in recent years, the Senate approves the long since stalled funding bill to continue the construction of their Ministry building in the capital. [3/5]
    4[Curiosity]
Construct a Trading Post in Felitora for Mithril as agreed with Sycia at the Conference of Changing Tides.
    5[Diplomacy]
Diplomatic outreach! As part of a new initiative of Speaker Cheyna's, materials and specialists are dispatched to Dong Du Bosi to aid in the construction of the train networks there. As an old friend of the UJR, in fact one older than the existence of the UJR as what it is, there is little dispute in the rightfulness of sending such support. The recently signed international rail system treaty signed between them and other Western states on adds to the approval. [2/2]
    6[Diplomacy]
Far more surprising, and controversial, is the choice - finally approved by the Senate after much debate - to send materials and similar specialists to Glazfell to aid in the work on their national road network. Although the Hegemony has since ceased its trade of Slaves with the Tzaltec, and have not in themselves maligned the peoples of the lands they won in the Sunset War, there are many who remain...uncomfortable with aiding those who were once enemies. Yet the fact that it is a civil project only, and one that will help the peoples of the Eastern empire makes it more acceptable, enough that funding for the project is eventually passed by the Senate. [3/5]

    Announcements

    News & Rumors
    • The peoples of Qarimos, Raaneka and Ayava have reacted with great confusion to the apparent demand for their return to the Empire of Dawn. Senators from the regions meet with their people, seeking opinions amongst the towns and villages of their constituencies, yet very few are met with any desire for return. The Speaker has promised the Senate that she will represent them at the conference soon to be held in Raaneka, and several prominent Senators of the regions have requested to be present at the meeting so that they might make the opinions of those they represent known. An informal senatorial vote prior to the meeting returns a 76% majority against the Empire of Dawn's proposal.
    • The brainchild of Chancellor M.C. Hammer, an ordered and inclusive system of commercial transport between all nations of the Unoin, is met with great joy by the population of the struggling boom towns that arose from the construction of the rail system. Transformed now from settlements to service construction to trading depots and logistical centres of gravity, they might never regain their former economic prominence but their futures - so in peril short years ago - now seem secure.
    • Ministry of Mentality inventors have apparently been entranced by the results of a series of experiments following Mtambuzi presence at Singing Illumination performances. Use of K'Braashrix Dragon Scales to amplify the voices of singers - and the music of instruments - has drawn considerable interest from the Ministry's leadership, and a request for further support has been filed with the Senate for consideration.
    • The expressions of celebration by the first of the Illuminators at the first graduations since the discovery of the Art are said to have lit the caverns of Ayava for over a week, a wordless testament to the power of the Greater Art. Mtambuzi from throughout the Republics are said to have flocked to the area since this demonstration, and the Colleges have almost been swamped by them as they all but beg them to explain their techniques. Vyuma benders have been attempting for decades to create constructs that will hold without thought. Although the medium differs, if the rumours are true, Illuminators may hold the key to finally unlocking that secret.
    • Speaker Cheyna's new outreach programs have drawn the focus of many across the Republics, harkening back to the work of the Ministers of Speaker Hrii of Qarimos which drove the founding and approval of the still ongoing cultural and educational exchange program with the Free Cities. Although there remain those within her support base who feel that her efforts might be better directed - to the UJR itself, or perhaps its closer allies - she retains a solid core of supporters who understand the need for relations both beyond their borders and more widely spread than they have been for many years.

    Fluff Post

    -=A Glorious Appointment=-

Marvella tried not to think about what was about to happen.

"You shall abandon all you have experienced until now." She said to the woman before her. "You shall abandon family, home, life. You shall abandon name and embrace a new one in the glory of the Goddess."

Marvella thought back to her own ceremony. It was faded in her mind now, but she didn't think she'd been as steady and sure as this... Vanezia, was it? Gloria, soon. This was actually something the two Doctrines had in common, though Sycia now performed the ceremony in full AND bore the Rod of Yphine.

"Rise, Daughter of the Frost..." Marvella said loudly, holding out the Rod of Yphine. "And accept your new name."

High Priestess Gloria stood and smirked with cold arrogance. "I am High Priestess Gloria, Bearer of the Rod, High Priestess of the Chosen People, Guide to the Sacred Land, Hand and Voice of Yphine - our Frozen Lady, the goddess of Frost, Cold, and Ice, bringer of Eternal Winter."

She tore the Rod from Marvella's hand, and with a bright flash her skin took on the same cold blue hue as Marvella's. She delved into the power that both the Holy States and Sycia had now granted to her, and became a giantess of pure ice.

    "I am Yphine."

A block of lead fell into Marvella's stomach. She'd had this job since she was ten - practically speaking, her entire existence had revolved around this job. It was her existence. And now it was High Priestess Gloria's.

And frost bite her, she made it look good.

Marvella, her role done, turned to leave. It wasn't time for her to enter the Tomb yet - Eero still needed her there... what was a high priestess supposed to do when she retired? Perhaps they would go visit the Salterri lands, she'd always liked Eero's tales of the place.

And she had the strangest inkling her role was not yet done...

    #-#-#

Gloria sneered and looked at the rod in her hand. It was almost too easy.

Sycia may have won the military conflict, but ultimately the States had won the faith. In one fell swoop, the Holy States (now the Holy Nations) were in control once more - not only did they have control of the Doctrine and the faith of the former heretics, but they'd managed to get out from under the heel of the Dominion AND the Hegemony. She might not have wanted Marmora gone, but ultimately the battle had been won, and she supposed that was what counted. At least Vurima wouldn't be in charge any more.

Oh, but they'd only just begun!

With leadership that was THIS willing to lose ground to a foe that they'd essentially already beaten, the western Doctrine had still managed to convert entire nations to Yphine's word! Marvella couldn't have done it through her own might, not if she was so easy to force to capitulate. The reach and power of Sycia was massive indeed, and now it was under her rule.

And the power... Once, at her request, Vurima had described the sensation of Yphine's embrace. Marvella had also relented, after some prodding.
    ---
"It's like... like your heart is made of true ice. Cold pumps through your veins, comforting and calm." Marvella had said. "The magic practically flies from your hand, begging to be set free..."

Vurima cocked an eyebrow, her pink eyes cold and dark. "... My bones feel like they've been coated in steel. I'm not sure how else to describe it." She admitted. "Hard, cold, strong and large... It's not something one can put out of their mind."

    ---

Gloria felt as if her heart was at the center of a snowstorm, and only her skin held it in. Marvella was right, it absolutely begged her to be released. For now, she was simply a woman with blue skin. But she knew instinctively that when she released it she would become a giant made of true ice.

She was Yphine in every way that mattered, and she would show the western heretics what that meant.

The eastern faithful, too. They'd lost because they'd been too soft. But now, she had the strength to do so much more than the east or west could ever have imagined.

Telluris belonged to Yphine and to the Doctrine.

    Telluris belonged to Gloria.

Hunters in Taloqi (region 116) began to experiment with the horns that grew along the spines of Basilisks and discovered that they were bendable enough that they were able to be made into fairly accurate bows, even more so with older and longer horns that could be made into longbows. Once they made this discovery, they alerted the capital at Maur.

Dragon-Queen Kara Volshevrin saw much use of this and molded it into something more, by taking a Divining Sapphire and using it as a focus to be in the middle of the bow to provide a focus for the archer's aim. It would allow the archer to have much greater accuracy at longer ranges, by providing a "zoom"-like effect to better gauge distance.

    Blazing Temple (N/A)
    Round 32 Round 33 Round 34 Round 35 Round 36 Round 37 Round 38 Round 39 Round 40

    First Brother Rodrigo Bartolomeu
    Diplomacy: 3
    Military: 1
    Curiosity: 2
    Faith: 8

    Population: 4,000

With the loss of Charles the Temple has fallen back into a period of relative dormancy, pushing not for the Lord to be accepted and to retake the faithful lands but instead focus more conservatively on those who have accepted the Blazing Truth. A most notable conversion begins to be effected in Cridan where the missionaries sent there in previous years are successful in negotiating with the Tyranny for a Majority conversion in the land. It is also well rumored that more and more well educated and venerated Brothers and Sisters from the Temple have journeyed to Cridan to partake in happenings in the barren land on order of the First Brother and the compliance of the Tyranny.

First Brother Rodrigo is said to appear to be aging poorly under the stress of First Brotherhood without the guidance of his mentor Charles. The middle aged First Brother has met with Kelrax of the Dunfel extensively simply to discuss their late friend and guide. It is said that the Brothers and Sisters already suspect the pressures of First Brother to overwhelm Rodrigo and quiet moves have begun to be made by the more ambitious members of the Temple to position themselves for nomination and election as First Brother of the Temple.

1.) Convert Cridan to Lord of Fire Majority TN: 12 Roll: 19 [Faith]
2.) Convert Undersulvan to Lord of Fire Minority TN: 10 Roll: 15 [Faith]

    Banished Kingdom of Kelldria (P9, P10, P16, 129)
    Round 37 Round 38 Round 39 Round 40

    Gregor Argulus
    Diplomacy: 4
    Military: 9
    Curiosity: 2
    Faith: 2

    Population: P9 –340,000; P10 – 210,000; P16 – 450,000; 129 – 740,000; 165 -
    Land Armies: P9 –5; P10 – 5; P16 – 5; 129 – 6; 165 - 0

New land means leaving behind old land. The Kell who held the land and kept the natives in line are gathered together and moved east into the new land to secure it for the Banished Kingdom. While the new land is no greener than the land held by the leaders of the Kell it is hoped perhaps greener land might lay beyond and scouts are dispatched to investigate the possibility. A few among the chiefs agitate at the Argulus' decision to negotiate with the Salterri but Gregor silences the opposition with the return of the body of Vapeema, returned by the Lyr and functioned by the Salterri meeting. While the cowardice of the Lyr and brutality of the Salterri is not forgotten it is accepted that even lesser beings such as those to the north of the Kell might be useful despite their lack of honor or bravery.

1.) Raise 1 Land Unit in 129 [Military]
    2.) Transfer 5 Units from P16 to 165 [Military]
3.) Build a tradepost in P16 for Platinum [Curiosity]

    Voreal Kingdom (P4, P5, 80, 81, 117)

    Population: P4 – 489,000; P5 – 430,000; 80 – 940,000; 81 – 1,032,000; 117 – 745,000
    Land Armies: P4 – 5; P5 – 5; 80 – 5; 81 – 10; 117 – 3

Despot Maraat agitates under his father's peace and organizes a proselytizing mission to be sent into the Voreal Kingdom's neighbors the Duchy of Krepida to turn the populace there to the lady's word without the permission of the Autokratos. The prince also leads conversions in the lands of Lorvyn, the land weakened by the growth of the dragon in recent years, hoping to find souls willing to listen to the voice of ice which so is the antithesis of the dragon's fire.

The Autokratos, hoping the actions of his son will not prove fatal to the tenuous peace, moves forward construction projects in the Kingdom intended to enrich it and show the culture of the Eastern Doctrine as well as incorporate the blessings from across the Ice Wall into the lives of the Kingdom's citizens.

    Trandar (145)
    Round 35

    Diplomacy: 2
    Military: 1
    Curiosity: 8
    Faith: 5

    Population: 145 -
    Land Army: 145 - 1

The rise of a militant and opposing religious zealotry to their west seems not to disturb the natives of Trandar who continue to work on internal projects seemingly unaware of any danger. Nonetheless a small levy is raised and the sovereign authorizes investigation into the neighbors who have been spotted often crossing the borders of Trandar.

1.) Begin construction of Trandar Academy of Arts (1/5) [Curiosity]
2.) Investigate the hooded figures from Telek'kra Roll: 12 [Curiosity]
3.) Raise 1 Land Unit [Military]

    Kingdom of Kuldran (P6)

    Diplomacy: 6
    Military: 7
    Curiosity: 3
    Faith: 3

    Population: P6 -
    Land Army: P6 - 2

Contact with the Glazfell Hegemony prompts the polar Kingdom of Kuldran to move again on the international stage, launching an attempt at conversion and spreading across the pole into the long unclaimed land to their east. While the messengers from Glazfell report little regarding the Kingdom's opinion of the Hegemony it does appear it was their contact the bolstered action from the walled off polar nation and a debt of gratitude may be owed.

    1.) Colonize Region P7 TN: 10 Roll: 12 (1/2) [Diplomacy]
2.) Convert Kuldran to Doctrine of the Frost Minority TN: 10 Roll: 12 [Faith]

    Tyranny of New Crima (23A, 94, 95, 97, 98)

    Good Tyrant Sarnai Eats-the-Eyes
    Diplomacy: 5

    Aquatic Forces: 23 - 1;94 - 0;95 - 0;97 - ;98 - 0

Sarnai, in an attempt to recover and redirect the Tyranny from the obsession of the Watcher that gripped the Cabinet for years now with the Watcher gone focuses efforts back on the Umajin Frontier but surprisingly extends the Tyranny's forces to the Tzaltec in the East, a surprising move to some considering the Tyranny's purported neutrality and insistence on remaining unaligned. The Tyrant Sarnai's sponsorship by the Tzaltec is well known among top bureaucrats and certain unflattering rumors regarding Sarnai's position as a 'lapdog' begin to circulate through the Tyranny. The Motherland also expresses a certain displeasure at the absence of attention paid to it in recent years in favor of the Umajin Frontier but all seems to simply be words. For now.

1.) Raise 1 Land Unit in Miskaton (97) [Military]
2.) Complete the Miskaton March of Defiance (2/2) [Diplomacy]
3.) Aid the Tzaltec Empire with its School System +1 Project [Diplomacy]

Chivalric Republic of the United Free Cities
    "Land of Free Knights"

    Years 531-535

Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei of Kanyat (32-36)

There are many frustrated Free Knights who protest against Education reforms. Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei argues that Steward Commelina intended the universal education to direct the society to peace. "I am only continuing her noble actions." Is Yfa's defense.
The presentation to the council is audacious. To imagine a society where everyone can live harmoniously without dependence on Free Knights is very tempting for local council members. Free Knight delegation argues against this, warning such a situation was reason city states became attacked and three generations of families were sacrificed for freedom. "Such a short-sighted policy can't be supported!"
"Education is not short-sighted! It is the longest vision, to think about future children. The Free Knights worry about safety, not about liberty." Is the Sphynks reply. In such a manner, council's decision is made and education reform begins.

    About Hospitalers:

    Show
A [Military Action] or [Diplomacy Action] must spend to deploy Hospitalers to theatres of war. The designated locations follow similar rule to soldier distribution.

Hospitaler Aid gives -2 to casualty losses to participants in the battle. The aided sides must be designated with the locations.

    Constructing Garden City (2/5)
    (Faith Action)
For Sphynks who remember prophecies, the audacious plan to come together and build new Garden City is to bring upon the wrath of deity and repeat mistakes of ancestors. However, Return-to-the-Homeland movement is very strong. Such an audacious plan to reclaim ancient glory is supported by new Steward, and with such an endorsement, opposition cannot stand.

    Constructing Garden City (3/5)
    (Faith Action) (Efficient Building)
What will happen when Garden City is finished? It isn't known, however Sphynks from Kanyat also are arriving to support and witness this new city in the Garden of Requiem.

Chivalric Republic of the United Free Cities to trade Bastet <Glass> for Kingdom of the Isles <Fish>.

    Education Reform (1/2)
    (Curiosity Action)
Overcoming Free Knight opposition, new Education reform is planned. Even if it is said in future generations that Yfa Da'at Zwei was a villain, her cunning reform is difficult to denounce.
Universal Education requires all children to attend school, for their betterment and future opportunities. Required subject such as <Language> <Mathematics> <Science> <Social Studies> <Industrial Arts and Homemaking> <Music> and <Physical Education> are taught.
However, there is trouble, too. There is criticism and arguments of teachers about new [textbooks], to downplay importance of Free Knights. Also it is concern <Foreign Languages> and <History> are not taught. Requirement means Free Knight Apprentice and Squires at Prestigious Heroic Academies of Free Knights must abandon training to attend public school.
Without new trainees, Prestigious Heroic Academies of Free Knights are troubled. Yfa Da'at Zwei swiftly moves to employ such instructors at Public School. However, there are protests about such a curriculum. In this way, Free Knights warn strongly in 20 years there will not be enough Free Knights to protect or govern country.
Of course supporters of education reform argue children must be properly given choice to decide their future. For Free Knights who have dedicated their lives to serve, it is a bitter frustration to be misunderstood.

    Bastet Musical Revolution becomes famous
((Curiosity 5 Special: New Resource in Bastet: Musical Instruments)
The skill of Sphynks dancers and musicians has become well known because of their dominance of social situation in the Chivalric Republic of the United Free Cities. The expertise has brought many aspiring young musicians to bring their hopes to Bastet. Such a music scene makes the intense competition from which legendary talent can arrive.
The traveling performance style of such a desert nomad may seem carefree, however it cannot be denied the ability to affect listeners with their music. Naturally, the extremely skilled craftsmen produce legendary musical instruments, which are valued like their performers.

    Situations:
    Spoiler

Summer Floods: The rainy season is always uncooperative. Fernbrake monsters appear in large numbers. Free Knights fight with determination, however it is concern because monsters cannot be quickly exterminated.

School Days: Changing of education system means many civilians eagerly attend new required public schools. Former Free Knight trainees must adopt new universal public school uniform and attend classes with civilians. Dreams of becoming a heroic Free Knight are becoming less popular.

Sphynks Culture Becomes Popular: With Sphynks steward and many exciting events in Bastet, Sphynks culture has become popular in Land of Free Knights, too. Clothing and textiles from Bastet are very stylish and popular. A local accessory shop sells cat-ear headbands.

    Round Forty-Two: Begin!
Years 536-540 of the Common Calendar

    Rolls: 1 2 3

Don’t forget to link to any rolls you make for ANY Attribute checks, plus rolls for rulers you will start using at the start of next round. If you want a new ruler in the next round, you must state so in your action post for this round and link to their rolls. Any increases from actions for this round are counted for the ruler you start your next round with (because it’s handier to account for by the co-GM), which may or may not be your current ruler.

    Good luck!

    War!

[537] Though the Knights of Black seemed content to retreat and recoup after the middling encounter with the Dunfel some years prior the world it seemed would not tolerate their presence and a coalition of states bore down upon the Knights, hunting them through Gunung and forcing a confrontation on the open field. A massive army for simply confronting the marauders the roving band of Jaaku Na cultists fought well but even with the blessings of Ridovo and their arcane rituals they could not withstand the forces brought against them and their leader, the Dread Knight himself, was captured along with the Black Bulwark Artifact. The shield and the prisoner remain in the custody of the Glazfell contingent but whether the other members of the coalition are willing to allow the eastern empire to walk away with the prize remains to be seen.

[538] The armies of the Kingdom of Ashenia assault the Heartgouger Tower with gusto and manage to defeat the evil within! Surrounding the base of the tower, according to reports and the shattered remains at its base was a small contingent of Ice shaped into the giant form of a man and given life. Ice Golems in the documentation of the incident. At the top of the tower Frosten man claiming to be the reincarnation of Hartigan Biűrkahâd was identified as the source of the Golems and the winter magic and was himself capable of conjuring and projecting ice similar to the High Priestess of Sycia and the Cryomancers of the East. Though he put up a fight and was himself responsible for the death of ten Ashenian officers he was subdued and captured. In captivity the Ice Sorcerer ranted about his rightful place as the head of the Doctrine and on the extreme methods necessary to purge the infidels from the world in preparation for Yphinne's coming. In his rants the Frosten man admitted to the murders that plagued the Kingdom and the eradication of religious minorities within the Kingdom's folds.

When news of this man reaches the Voreal Kingdom a solemn statement identifying the man as a promising young Priest of Frost, Thadeus Karkanos, is released. According to the Voreal the man was a promising member of the Voreal Holy Orders of Cryomancy who had disappeared without a trace some decades prior along with a sizable collection of arcane literature on the nature of frost magic and the connection of preserving life with the power of the Goddess. A request is made for the Kingdom of Ashenia to scour the mad Priest's lodging for these or any further writings that they can be purged. How or why he ended up in Angan Anvale or what plagued his adoption of this Hartigan persona is unclear but the Voreal Kingdom encourages the Kingdom of Ashenia to execute the man before he can become a danger once again.

    Terror!

[536] The mounting unrest in Faedas finally boils over and the world watches as the Throne of Thorns pricks blood! The Queen Lorisanth Varinel is abducted in the middle of the day from her private quarters by an unknown party suspected to be native in origin and taken away to parts unknown! It is said that the Children of Kina attempted personally to prevent the Queen's abduction and recover the Varinel Queen from her abductors but it seems they were unsuccessful as no word from Queen Lorisanth reaches the outside world after her disappearance!

With the power vacuum opened moves are made to close it as assassins make simultaneous moves against the two Faedas nobles ahead of the ruthess Regent Meztli, Alicia Loistavaseppä and Handra Alabasa! Handra Alabasa is reported dead by members of the Faedic Order but rumors persist that the woman escaped, some say heading south, and no body is produced to confirm her elimination!

The matter of Alicia however proves far more complicated. Initial reports from the Heartwaste indicate Alicia and her husband, Edward of Serendel, were slain in their bedchambers by the assassins of the Regent's plot. Yet this news quickly changes as it is discovered hours after the assassination that the two slain by the blades of the assassins were not Alicia and Edward but in fact the Regent Meztli herself and her Tzaltec lover and half brother, Aahotpre! Confusion rises when Alicia makes a public appearance, proclaiming herself as Queen of Faedas in the absence of Queen Lorisanth and taking the Throne of Thorns for herself!

The Heartwaste as the capital of the Freehold is in disarray following the events although Alicia promises to restore order and continuity as within her power! (Lorisanth's stats still in effect this round, new Leader in Faedas: Alicia Loistavaseppä)

[537] Mtambuzi Madhav 'Mad' Roberts with a fleet of Republic ships launches out into the Sea of the Golden Sun determined to find and destroy the Eight Daughters of the Watcher! According to the journals, logs, and accounts of members of the expedition the Captain Roberts sailed the ships hard and rough upon the sea for months, refusing to return to port as they grew swept the ocean in search of the offspring of the terror of the Sea. Roberts himself only appeared to issue commands and watch the deep, spending much of his time locked in his cabin working deep into the night on some unknown pursuit of writing.

Mutiny seemed imminent when a storm struck the fleet and Madhav refused to seek shelter, insistent the storm would bring the terrifying creature to surface but the Mad Mtambuzi proved correct and one of the daughters was spotted in the sea above the Abyss of Corriach. The storm raged and the captains of the various ships urged retreat but instead, without pause according to all accounts, Madhav dove overboard spear in hand and disappeared beneath the waves. The storm tore apart the Republic fleet as they waited for the Mtambuzi to resurface. Ten minutes later a body of the creature floated to the surface and was hauled aboard but no signs of the Mtambuzi were reported.

The remaining ships elected to return home while able and the search was abandoned. The ships made their way west, returning to Readurjic ports with the specimen in tow. What it was doing out there, where it and its siblings were hiding, these were unclear. Some reports suggested having witnessed Carrachan trying to corral the Daughter, others that the other seven were present and had killed 'Mad' Roberts, while still some claimed the Watcher herself was there, observing the struggle of the Mtambuzi and some say, eating him whole. In any event the Union seems to have lost Roberts along with an entire fleet in exchange for the corpse of one of the Daughters.

[538] In Guilder confusion and awe grip the people when the Golden Statue of Doge Humperdink is found missing by a local custodian! According to the custodian the statue "-was-a there-a yesterday! And now there's just-a this stupid-a flower!" The flower, a lily native to the fields of Guilder, was all that indicated foul play! How an entire statue could be stolen unseen in one night is unknown but all Guilderene clutch their purses a little closer at the news!

[539] A former writer for the Modern Assertion is found on the steps of the dogal palace naked and babbling incoherently about fish with fingers and someone named 'Colonel Custard'. He appears to be extremely inebriated and drugged. It is later discovered he was the playwright to the now famous Guilder play making fun of the various religions of the world. The man seems traumatized by the appearance of Catfolk women for some unexplained reason!

Naturally the Modern Assertion goes to work, accusing the new High Priestess Gloria of ordering her secret force of Cryomancers (trained by the Tzaltec in conditioning techniques) to abduct and torture the broken writer! Some note the Modern Assertion seems to have put some actual integrity in this journalism and have reportedly elected to cover the medical and psychological treatment of its former writer.

[540] A Novranian sailor reports witnessing a great fog upon the ocean and through it, a fleet of massive size matching the fleet of Dreadlove decades prior. Initially dismissed as the year drags on more and more reports of the same filter into the bars and pubs of port towns along the coasts of the Hundred Seas!

Mictlanpa is blessed with the appearance of Flame Sheet a nearly weightless paper created by melting deposits of black and red snow that has begun falling in parts of the region and refreezing the meltings in pans forming sheafs of the miracle paper which seems to take well to the printing presses and the written word of the Lord!

[537] Age finally catches up to the Komola Doge of Guilder and Kuku Lelion passes away in her sleep at the ripe old age of OLD!

[538] A strange book appears in Kaspiyskiya, discovered by a young noble clutched in the hands of a commoner found dead upon the beaches of the region. Almost impossible to pry from the dead man's hands the book appears to be titled in a foreign language to the Commonwealth. The writing is identified by local scholars as Radurjic though reading of the script is beyond the abilities of the local authority.

[539] There are rare reports of feral black flaming goats from the occasional farmhand in Shengdi, though these seem to be unsubstantiated.

[540] A fleet of merchant marines and volunteers has been assembled off the coast of Drugaud where Glazfell naval presence is negligible under the command of an elder Sympol. According to most the assembled fleet numbering 3,000 strong has its sight set on conquering and driving out the pirates of the The Serpent's Teeth and are to set sail within the next year though are still open to recruiting and further assistance.

        • Underwater Heavy Calvary for the promise of Amplification, once research has been completed
        • Sea Wurms from Myrwik (U34) in exchange for Wurmsxupp
        • Basilisk Venom (UJR) in exchange for the Aquatic Cloud Weapon technology and the support of Praeclarus for a Trading Post in one of the regions of the Regnum, along with the understanding that Hurosha be given preferential trades for any remaining poison supplies to help bolster PADL defenses
        • In an open discussion between cultures, Myrwik becomes interested in the Radurjic religion. Promising to allow missionaries for the religion to travel to Myrwik, Praeclarus also discusses the opportunities to send speakers for the Scions of Jongo to the coastal regions of the UJR.
        • As part of this Cultural Exchange, a diplomatic document is drafted up, so that no religious misunderstandings occur:
          - The Regnum of Praeclarus will allow and support Radurjic missionaries in all regions, except Margaria (U17) due to the region being openly agnostic.
          - Unless the people of a region ask for more details, Radurjic missionaries will not over extend themselves, nor will missionaries for the Scions of Jongo do more then asked of them [OOC: Nothing higher then a minority through direct actions without player permission]
          - To help those followers of the ways of the Radurjic, the UJR agrees to gift to Myrwik (U34) Osuro from Genivana (9) and Hai Vyuma from Hrathan-Tour (10).
        • In exchange for assistance in exploring and colonizing the undiscovered region near Barathrum, Celapho'Di, and the UJR coastal lands, Praeclarus receives from the UJR the following technologies: Vyuma Bending and Mtambuzi Technology
      • Make introductions and friends with those of Cephalo'Di, agreeing upon several things:
        • Lignum Aqua from Vagas Littus [U32] for Anju’Tellurium from Cephalo'Di [U14], directing the shipments to Belua Bay [U33]
        • With the backing of Hurosha, offer Cephalo'Di a chance to join PADL:
Members of PADL agree to the following:

          - Nonagression amongst intelligent beings living below the sea
          - All avenues of diplomatic and peaceful exchanges between members of PADL must be attempted before any formal dissolution of membership from this League are considered
          - Members agree to discuss the sharing of resources and technologies, as they exist or are developed, for the benefit of undersea exploration and retaining control of the sanctity and safety of the sea
          - In the event of a dispute of ownership of certain areas of the sea, members will resolve the conflict peacefully
          - Members will defend the ocean against any intruders that mean it harm
          - Confirmed international pirates will be treated as invaders that would mean the ocean harm
          - Members of PADL agree to allow the exchange of students between schools, such as the diplomatic college, Uncle Sky's School for Surface Walkers
          - Where politically possible, members of PADL will assist each other in other diplomatic ventures

          Current Members:
          - Praeclarus
          - Hurosha
        • Gift Cephalo'Di the Underwater Heavy Calvary tech, in celebration of them joining PADL
        • Trade Sea Wurms (U34) for Chorda Kelp (U14), directing this unusual rope to Vagas Littus (U32).

    • <Curiosity 5> (Adaption) Officially investigate the uses of Dream Sugar, and find that it is a suitable substitute for the Oracles technology.

Spoiler: The Construction of Silvermire, Phoenix Isle, The Coldwell
    Show
There was an air of unease aboard the Wandering Star as the ship pulled into the misty harbor of Phoenix Isle. The Spriggans shivered, their warm breath pluming into gray smoke like the thick fog that sat low on the white, desolate landscape. Foreign Affairs Ambassador Carmeia huddled beneath her fur wrap and scowled at the forbidding terrain, she still didn't understand how she ended up with this assignment, the Blood Drinkers didn't technically fall under the foreign affairs umbrella, and she didn't even speak Frost Troll. She glared at her younger assistant's back, likely this assignment was her fault, she was given to bragging about learning the Frost Troll dialect at the Enclave Institute for Collegiate Mastery, if you could call it a dialect, it sounded like a garble of grunts and growls to her. There was very little her assistant didn't brag about. Carmeia was certain the only reason Venia had gotten her position so young was Venia's insistence that, as a Deathbranch, she was related to the royal family. She snorted derisively, she may share a great great great grandfather with the Queen, but it was hardly reasonable to expect favors on those grounds. Positions of authority should be earned, she thought self-righteously to herself, willfully ignoring the fact that neither of them would have their position if former Ambassador Semelea hadn't been permanently assigned to Urusilium. Her shoulders slumped, they were expected to stay an entire year until the next ship came with a fresh crew of metal smiths. It seemed the Roimoata's had a depraved predilection for banishing their Ambassadors to the frozen wastes.

Venia scanned the distance for the Frost Troll delegation they were supposed to be meeting with, but it was no good, all she could see was a great white expanse. There could be an entire army of Frost Trolls and they would never know until they were besieged, or those giant bear-dogs for that matter. She shivered, not entirely from the cold. Venia was determined to prove herself on this mission, keenly aware of Carmeia's assertions that Venia would not be here if it wasn't for being the niece of Semelea's personal guard. She tossed her head indignantly, not everyone was fluent in Blood Drinker, Carmeia included. There was a rumbling from the guards and craftsmen and Venia looked up, there was finally movement in the distance, a large white mass was heading towards them. Venia was uncertain as Carmeia looked ready to bolt back to the ship. The nervous guards put their hands to their weapons,
"Hold steady men!" Captain Koldo motioned for the men to stay their hands, staring intently at the rapidly encroaching mass, seeking clues as to whether they were friend or foe. The Spriggans relaxed slightly as details came into view and the large horns of the Frost Trolls could be plainly seen.

Venia moved to the front of the group as the Troll delegation approached and it's leader roared and growled his welcome,
"This is Regent RAWR, his name may be translated to Cregi in our tongue. Regent Cregi bids us all welcome." Venia turned to the fluffy white giant and roared and grumbled back at him, they grasped arms at the elbows in a friendly manner, before Venia turned and gestured at Carmeia and Captain Koldo, clearly making introductions. Carmeia squared her shoulders and took Cregi's arm, she wasn't about to be shown up by her upstart assistant.
"This is Regent Cregi's Second-in-Command, Oto." Again Venia first rumbled the Troll's proper name, and followed up with the translation, the Second smiled at hearing his name translated, a big sharp-toothed grin which should have been terrifying, but was somehow disarming.
"They would like us all to follow them to the build site", she translated after much rumbling dialogue back and forth,
"It's not far, a fair hour hike inland" She pointed to the North East. As their reached their destination, The Weeping Mountain dominated the bleak landscape, rising high above the frozen plains and massive glaciers of the Isle.

The Spriggans covered their mouths with cloths as they crossed through patches of rustwind, trying to mitigate the effects of the plant's mineral leeching pollens. The rustwind would take it's toll eventually, causing the need for the guards and craftsmen to be rotated out every year. The Broken Enclave had long ago promised the Blood Drinkers aid in improving their quality of life on Phoenix Isle in exchange for their unifying with the Kingdom of the Isles, Queen Areta was determined to make good on that promise and had finally arranged an import of silver to the Coldwell, which was not corroded by the salt air or the rustwind. Carmeia looked around and shook her head in amazement, an entire city of silver was to be built in the middle of this apparent wasteland, she had to hand it Areta, the Queen was certainly good for her word. Carmeia turned to Venia, who was growling with Cregi and relaying instructions to the craftsmen,
"Do they have a name for the city yet?" She gestured to empty field they were standing in. Venia exchanged rapid grumbles with the Frost Troll leader and once again translated,
"It will be called Silvermire, the First City of The People."

My magick can heal, for it comes from the place where there is no separation and we are all one, where the water of the pool merges again and is lost in the ocean.

    Spoiler: 540 Sanglean Census
    Show
Queen Areta and Warden Jehannin sat around the modest wooden table in Dumpardo's meeting room. It had been five years since the last census, a rough time for the citizens of Sanglea, Many deaths had resulted from the mysterious illness that had made it's way throughout the population. It hadn't been all bad, there had even been experiments with farming on the Ground, Jehannin himself had spearheaded that endeavor, supplying himself and many of his friends and relatives with fresh food so that more of the imported food went to it's most needy citizens.

Jehannin leaned over the reports and frowned, according to the census, the population in Dumpardo had decreased by a staggering 41%. He had expected to see a similar stat for Siranol and Coliear, but both Pillar cities had had a steady increase in population despite the epidemic. The increase was not enough to account for the Dumpardo population having migrated to the Pillar cities, it would seem the outbreak had occurred solely in Dumpardo. He shook his head, there was no logical explanation for the disparity. He waved the reports at Areta, momentarily forgetting propriety,

"This doesn't make any sense. How...?" He trailed off, shock making his voice a whisper as he tried to negate the findings with a shake of his head. Areta stared silently at him, face pale, considering the implications of the report. She was desperately afraid the she had vastly underestimated Alushen's ambitions, to the detriment of thousands of her people.
"Isn't there a shipment coming in today?" Her pale face belied her calm demeanor. Jehannin looked confused for a moment before his face was stricken with a look of horror,
"Yes." was all he could manage. Areta turned towards her guards standing behind her and whispered something to them, they hurried off to carry out her orders. She turned to her remaining Queensguard,
"Bring me the Regent, oh and his assistant Morrel as well." She narrowed her large eyes as she sat and waited for her Guard's findings.

Quite some time later, her Guards came in holding Radath under each arm. His face was red and swollen, there had obviously been a struggle. Jehannin glared at him, the Justicar had been put in charge of divvying up the imported goods between the three major settlements of Sanglea and was the first to handle each shipment. One of the guards gave a crossed arm salute before addressing the Queen,
"This was found on the Justicar's person, my Queen." The Guard placed a small container filled with what looked to be a yellow powder. Jehannin looked questioningly at it,
"What is it?" Areta's face was was still, but she was unable to mask the fury in her voice,
"It's ground rustwind powder." Radath glared defiantly as Areta regarded him accusingly,
"You will pay for what you've done to my people, you and Alushen both."

Radath remained grim faced and silent thoughout his questioning, the disciplined soldier never breaking. Morrel, Alushen's assistant broke easily upon seeing the confiscated rustwind powder, his eyes glazed as if he was somewhere else in his mind. Alushen on the other hand, never bothered denying his orchestration of the genocide of the Grounded in Dumpardo, he sat smugly in the face of Areta's fury, certain that he had done his duty for the benefit of the Risen, he regretted nothing. Areta had the three of them transported to The Drop, a guarded spot on Siranol's platform that opened to allow things, or people to be dropped off of the side of the Pillar, hundreds of feet off of the ground. Queen Areta faced the crowd that had gathered to witness the sentencing of their Regent. Whispers of his crimes had been passed from Spriggan to Spriggan and most would not meet Alushen's eyes as he glared defiantly into the crowd. Areta noted silently those few who met and maintained eye contact with Alushen, all higher ups in the Rism's hierarchy.

"Citizens of Siranol, today judgement must be passed down upon your Regent. He has admitted to the murder of thousands of Sanglea's people, conspiring to end the lives of civilians and children indiscriminately. Radath and Morrel have been found guilty of conspiring with, and aiding Alushen Sira in his goal of the total genocide of the Grounded, specifically the population of Dumpardo. Alushen's motivations stemmed from greed and malice. He desired more of the materials from Sanglea's imports to be used in the advancement of Rism's Doctrine, to rise up on the Pillars and finally discover what or if there is an end to their height. The lives of those lost were inconsequential in the face of his most lofty goal. As a result, not only will he removed from office in the most permanent way possible, I hereby declare the practice of Rism banned in Sanglea forever, upon banishment from the Isles as pariah."

There was a collective gasp and much shuffling from the crowd, Alushen's face had finally been divested of his smug facade and he struggled for the first time with the guards, who held him back easily. Areta turned to face the three men.

"Alushen Sira, Morrel Baske and Radath Sterlea, You all have been sentenced to death by Fall, for the reasons previously stated, to be carried out immediately. Your bodies are to be buried in the ground at the base of the Pillar."

Alushen and Radath struggled with the soldiers holding them while Morrel appeared to faint. One by one the three conspirators were thrown over the side of the Pillar. Areta turned back to the crowd which had fallen silent, she noticed Alushen's new widow among the onlookers.

"the contest to determine a new Regent will be held early next year. An interim Regent will be appointed to govern until that time." Areta turned and spoke softly to one of her guards,

"See that Lady Airini and her two sons accompany us back to the the Enclave, her place is with her daughter and Grandchild." The guard nodded and the subdued crowd began to disperse.

Spoiler: An Invitation to All to the Seventh Tellurian Games
    Show
Those who would likely encounter Ferans or who are near enough that Ferans could visit receive a Haljan bearing a light scroll who insists it should go to the nation's ruler. For others, noble visitors who seem elven or fae but could be from one of several places judging by their dress arrive with a light scroll seeking similar. Yet further away from Fera in the corners of the known world, perhaps a wealthy merchant will deliver the same scroll to one they trust will eventually get it to their nation's ruler. However and wherever the scroll reaches each nation, they all bear the same words which for any with some knowledge of the world would be easily dismissed as a prank were it not for the attention to detail required to create such a forgery.

Indeed, upon further investigation the scroll is no forgery.

--An excerpt from the scroll. The scroll reads as though it has clearly been translated.--

We of Fera would like to cordially invite you and your nation to attend the Seventh Tellurian Games in Frćzeid, Fera.

The tradition of the Games is centuries old, originating in the Painted Lands; Raaneka. Every fifteen years they would host the Raaneki Games during the six warmest days of Summer. Over one hundred years ago this became an international phenomenon, where all nations may come together to compete in the Games in peace. It is our honour to host the Seventh Tellurian Games in Frćzeid, Fera in the newly constructed Fjarskad Amphitheatre by Treasure Cove. We extend this invitation to all nations to come together on neutral ground to participate in this grand tradition, though it is as far from the Painted Lands from where it all began as it is possible to be.

--Also important to note from the invitation is that Fera requests all who attend refrain from deliberately taking the life of a sapient being. Furthermore, while on Feran soil no sapient is to treat another as a slave regardless of status in the outside world. Ignoring these requests will be met with consequences, save at the word of the Kaiser.--

    Spoiler: Seventh Games Subactions

Important Note -- Regardless of Feran border laws, all nations are allowed and invited to send representatives to the Seventh Tellurian Games as noted in the Invitation in the spoilerbox above. Furthermore, while on Feran soil no sapient is to treat another as a slave regardless of status in the outside world. Ignoring these requests will be met with consequences, save at the word of the Kaiser.

With the split in the Salterri Imperium, the non-aggression treaty between Fera and the Imperium becomes invalid as the Salterri Imperium as an entity has drastically changed.
As yet, Fera has not made moves to renegotiate the treaty with either nation after the split.

Aglus Thuidans Kaiser notes the changes in the Imperial Alydaxan Dominion, the changes in land administration of the regions with which Fera trade and the fact Kardilossa Spaiha have been working for the Imperial Alydaxan Dominion rather than just the Kingdom of the Silver Moon as was initially agreed.
As a result, the Peace Pact between the Imperial Alydaxan Dominion and Fera is now considered void, though Fera still regards the Empire of the Silver Moon overall well.

    Spoiler: Haljan Social System
    Show
Aglus Thuidans Leikeis Kaiser blinks at the Haljans around him. He'd thought the results of Gulth's extensive research and reforms had reached the Haljans of Hleibjan by now, yet it would seem they had not. Clicking a pincer once, he began to explain the research behind Gulth's 'Caste System'.

First, it would be useful to know what the Trade word 'Caste' means. It is used to describe any reasonably rigid system of social distinctions. As the various Haljan 'Castes' differ in various physical and psychological ways, such a system should have come naturally to them. Yet it did not, instead with Haljan society mirroring to an extent the humans. This is thought to be due to the Haljans' lost history and their years of enslavement, yet there still remains some doubt. All of the Haljans are to be equal to one another, for without one the rest of Haljan society would surely crumble. In practice, this is still not the case as there still remains issues of sexism, racism and now more open caste-ism to those which were not widely accepted into Haljan society prior to these changes. Furthermore, Haljans who are in some way different to the rest of their group are almost always treated poorly for it. A famous example is the late Gulth Thuidans Kaiser, who would now be a Zirndar Haljan despite being male.

And if you ask me, I believe he did not die of natural causes at all...

    Vitur

    -Smallest Haljans, most dangerous poison
-Mystics, shamans, druids, most connected to the Forces of Laiks Riqis

    News and Rumors
    Spoiler
    Show

    • According to most reports the Consortium seeks to expand its holdings swiftly and the recent refusal by the Cree Tyranny to allow Seaborne investigators to look into the Maiden of Cridan alongside their puppeteering by the Tzaltec Empire has given the Consortium, by its own estimation, right to reclaim the land granted to them.
    • The King Augustai has met with the Grand Duke and promised him the Thousand Vales and Miskaton alongside Promise for his loyal service to the Caercian Crown. The relevant portions of the Treaty of Deeptree regarding the land south of Cridan is overturned by the Caercian and Pavonian majority. A vassal shall receive better treatment than an ally of convenience.
    • King Augustai, a follower of Panshen, elects to heed the warning of the Blazing Temple and will attempt to avoid conflict in the region if the Tyranny will allow it.
    • Lord Protector Benfu, the King's twin brother, pushes for an immediate war but relents in light of the wisdom of his brother's plan to blockade the Storm Stones to Cree shipments and deprive the soldiers in the Frontier the weapons, and hopefully the willingness, to fight.
    • Lord Protector Benfu rides at the head of the Draco Legion bringing reinforcements to the Novranian forces pressing into Darsia. It is said the image of the able warrior upon the back of Handreich has put the fear of the Lord, Lady, and Wyrm into those who witness his approach.
    • The election of Lord Protector Benfu, brother to the King, as Grand Duke of Pavonia is well received in the capital solidifying years of work to improve relations with the Consortium's former foe. It is announced that Benfu shall continue to serve as Lord Protector and shall retain all his current titles save Legate of Palas Caercia, in his new role as Grand Duke.
    • News of the UJR's finger wagging reaches the Consortium and is met with ridicule and riotous derision. The Cree had been employed to drive back the independent Pavonians, now the Pavonians were under Caercian administration and the Cree had begun to carry out strange and unwelcome practices in the Frontier related to the "Woman of Cridan" and their refusal to allow foreign investigators inside, the genocide of the local dragon population in Miskaton, and their current Tyrant's position having been attained through the support of the Tzaltec Empire who have of late shown a propensity for merciless opportunism. There is justification for war and yet King Augustai still offers a peaceful withdrawal, that the Republics who stole land from their allies as weregild for the war they aided them with and have refused to admit any wrong doing in doing so would act superior in any way is considered the highest form of self unaware irony. Once again the Republics reaffirm their place as a ridiculous and unrespected nation of fools.

Round 42 Actions for Sobrida and the Kingdom of the Carmine Sea

Spoiler: The Lion and the Dragon, Part 1
    Show

The Hall of Portraits was one of the more private areas of the Palace, and Elwyn walked it in silence. Despite its name, the hall comprised not only portraits but statues, busts and landscapes, but was presented in broadly chronological orrder. The first few images, showing the early kings, were fanciful, but quality improved rapidly from the time of Athelmere. The great king was one of the more heavily featured, depicted alone, with his wife, with his children, with his siblings, with his lions, always gazing off into the distance as if anticipating his people's destiny.

Pictures of Tempest almost outnumbered those of Athelmere himself. Images of the queen, with or without the king, and her children, for that matter, filled a whole portion of the wall. There was a picture of Ambryn, Tailong, and their first seven children, and another of Eirwynn and her family, while Wandao and Hanyeo regarded them from the opposite wall. Tempest's presence was inescapable, though. Elwyn did not need to see the portraits of Isesu further down the hall to know that his wife would never achieve the acclaim of the beloved Islander queen.

Beyond Athelmere came Alfmark, Elwyn's own grandfather, flanked in some by Atheldynn, the kingdom's longest-serving atheling. Elwyn had never met either of them, nor did he have any idea of the truth of the pictures, but Alfmark's images projected a confidence that his predecessors' never had. He was the first king to look down on the viewer, rather than up towards some greater power. In some odd way, he was the first of them truly to look like a king.

    What do you think?

Elwyn turned, to see the king at the end of the hall. "I think the quality of portraiture has improved markedly in the last two centuries. By the time they reach my father they have almost done him justice.

They have not done a bad job on your grandfather, nor on Tempest, though by the time I knew her she was long past her prime. No artist would have dared portray her as she was by the end, I suspect.

    You knew her?

Only when I was a child; I remember her but scarcely. I recall once I asked her about the royal lions and whether it was true if Athelmere had truly wrestled them into submission.

    Did she answer?

She laughed, and told me I was the first child to ask her that in fifty years. She also made me promise never to tell another living soul.

A secret you will take to the grave, then?

But not beyond.” Blood dripped from Malyn's mouth. “Is either of us really a living soul any longer?

Elwyn looked down at the dagger protruding from the king's chest. “Her answer, then?

No. Athelmere found the mother dead or dying beside a litter of cubs, which he brought back to Jarburg and there raised as his own pets. He fathered the lions, as he fathered the kingdom.

The commonfolk say the king is secure so long as there are lions in the palace.

“The kingdom, perhaps. The king-” Malyn gestured over his ruined and rotting form. “- less so, it seems.” He gestured with an arm, whole and gold-clad, towards Elwyr. “He once sheltered in the lions' den from assassins. He clothed himself in an armour of lions as he locked himself away as a king. He was destined for greatness, but never for sovereignty. Eldred, he was a mighty man, who treated the pride as soldiers too unruly to command. A great warrior, but one who put his faith in men.” He smiled slightly as he waved towards his own family portrait. “My father never had much time for lions; he preferred his own wife and children. Wygg wanted one so desperately as a boy, I recall, but when he approached, one of them hissed and clawed; he nearly lost a hand.” He turned to look at Elwyn, with eyes that were at once there and the next buried in empty sockets. “And what of you?

The lions cower in my presence.

    And why is that?

Elwyn paused. “'Either of us', you said."

Malyn spread his arms. “I am long dead.

    But I am not.

Malyn cocked an eyebrow. “No? I remember some dark rumours in your infancy. Do you really yet live, Elwyn?

You think the lions fear me because I do not live?

I think nothing. I am dead.

You think what I believe you to think. I have heard these things before, from you or from others, and now I have put those words in your mouth.

    Why my mouth?

    You were my friend.

Malyn shook his head sadly. “You never had friends, 'Wyn, though perhaps I came closest. Twenty years dead and still I know you better than anyone living.

    That proves nothing.

    Why, then?

Elwyn looked out over the lion den and its cowering denizens. “They fear me because I am not like them.

Nobody is quite like anyone else. Kings and men, men and lions even less so. Try harder.

That they fear me is enough.”

It is never enough!” Malyn snapped, waving a hand at the elder kings. “Was it enough for them? There is not a sane soul alive who does not fear you, but it is a tool, not an end.

What are you trying to say?

The dead cannot change, Elwyn. We can only decay. Will you change, or did you die long ago, and it has taken you this long to notice?

    I live!

    Prove it.

I LIVE!” Elwyn seized the knife from his cousin's chest and plunged it into his own.

The pain was incredible as he slumped to his knees in the sand. Malyn looked down dispassionately. “Try harder,” he hissed, just as Elwyn's vision blacked out and his head struck the ground.

He awoke in a bed sodden with sweat. Outside, the lions were howling.

Spoiler: Letter to the Eldest Child of Kina, 539
    Show

    Eldest Child,

It was not so long ago that missionaries of the Children were forbidden from setting foot on this kingdom's soil under pain of death. This policy was relaxed in good faith in the hope that relations between our crown and the governments that subscribe to your church could be normalised.

In recent years the influx of missionaries from the Children into the Kingdom of the Isles, originating in both the Confederation and the Freehold, has caused unrest, instability, and vexation to both the queen and the remainder of the established government.

We are led to understand, following our attempts to negotiate directly with the Freehold, that the Children and their missionaries answer to no secular government and thus we address you directly.

We are sure that this has been a misunderstanding and are willing to forgive the damage already caused as unforeseen. However any further proselytisation by missionaries of Kina within the borders of Sobrida unless specifically and explicitly endorsed by the relevant sovereign will be taken as a deliberate attempt to disrupt, and an attack on, the government in question and the eastern Imperium as a whole. We reserve the right to respond in whatever means we deem appropriate to such an act.

A grace period of one hundred days is granted from the date of this missive to allow time for you to convey the relevant instructions.

    May your soul burn silver,

Elwyn, King of the Jarrs &c, Defier of the Dark, Q.S.C.I.

Actions for the UJR Senate, Round 42

    1[Req Curiosity 10]
The experimental evidence presented by the Ministry of Mentality on the possible civil uses of K'braash Province Dragon Scales to the Senate inspire many parties for many reasons, yet the result is overwhelming. Funding is granted, and in but a few short years the project bears fruit. The basic techniques are in many ways similar to those used in the thundersheet speaking trumpets long since used by the Seaborne Confederation, but more refined. Where once one might be limited by the capacity of his lungs in how many you could speak to, now one is no longer, and the possibilities for communication on a massive scale are breathtaking.

    Announcements
    Spoiler: Unity Victorious
    Show
Although expected to take the Speakership in the elections, following in the footsteps of his Raaneki mentor - and some say lover - the Speaker elections grant Kassem Isse a far more sweeping mandate then the Unity Party had hoped for. Of the nine provinces of the Republics, he secures Senatorial majority in six, with landslide victories in Ayava and Grizzland. Scarcely has the Speaker's Sigil faded from the hand of his mentor that it springs to life upon his own.

As Cheyna's successor in more ways than one, Kassem promises to continue the diplomatic works she started, although his choices for outreach will likely hew close to the Union's more traditional allies. Yet his Ministerial Requests spark considerable debate, as the once-citizen of Serendel elects to open even further the hand of friendship extended by his predecessor to the Universalists. Statistically, he is far less successful in his requests than Cheyna, but only statistically. Of the seven Universalist Senators among his requested, only four accept, and one is denied the Ministership by Unity elements within the Senate itself. Senator Asur returns again to the Ministry of Trade, but this time he is joined by two others from his party, taking high level Ministerial positions. And perhaps more importantly, granting their party a firm voice among the Ministries.

    News & Rumors
    • Some members among the Senate have been noted on record as openly against the extension of relations to the people of Cephalo’Di on the basis of their societal construct's naming scheme. It's little more than a vocal extreme minority, but that doesn't make it something that can be ignored.
    • The people of the Republics are believed to find themselves conflicted as to the troubles brewing in the south between New Crima and their - apparently now former - allies the Caercian Consortium. On one hand, Crima has long been a good friend and trading partner, yet their now open admission of Concordat membership combined with Good Tyrant Sarnai's all but confirmed Tzaltec backing does little to endear them. Pressure is mounting from various parties for a renegotiation of relations with the beleaguered state, yet the friendship of old still runs deep. Although the possibility of a new Dread Fleet is perhaps a more pragmatic reason for the desire to maintain - for now - good relations.

    Spoiler: International Diplomacy and Trades
    Show
    • Continue good relations with the Regnum of Praeclarus, trading the following:
      • Underwater Heavy Calvary for the promise of Amplification, once research has been completed
      • Dragon Scales from K'braash Province (8B) in exchange for Sea Wurms from Myrwik (U34)
      • Basilisks and Venom from Hrathan-Tour (10) in exchange for the Aquatic Cloud Weapon technology and the support of Praeclarus for a Trading Post in one of the regions of the Regnum, along with the understanding that Hurosha be given preferential trades for any remaining poison supplies to help bolster PADL defenses
        - Unless the people of a region ask for more details, Radurjic missionaries will not overextend themselves, nor will missionaries for the Scions of Jongo do more then asked of them [OOC: Nothing higher then a minority through direct actions]
        - To help those followers of the ways of the Radurjic, the UJR agrees to gift to Myrwik (U34) Osuro from Genivana (9) and Hai Vyuma from Hrathan-Tour (10).
      • In exchange for assistance in exploring and colonizing the undiscovered region near Barathrum and the UJR coastal lands, Praeclarus receives from the UJR the following technologies: Vyuma Bending and Mtambuzi Technology
    • Trade Interprovincial Trade to the Kingdom of Ashenia as promised.
    • Following the opening of communication with the Cealophytes and the establishment of good, if perhaps somewhat shaky, relations with them, a treaty is signed between the UJR and the fledgling underwater nation to formalize their new friendship.
      • The UJR agrees to stand in defence of the Cealophyte people, and to never attack them unless all possible diplomatic avenues have been exhausted.
      • The UJR are granted permission for their missionaries to visit the cities and people of Celapho'Di.
      • The High Lord will restructure the Tier of Slaves to the Tier of Reprobates, to aid in maintaining smooth relations with the people of the Republics.
      • The UJR extends a gift of civil technology to Celapho'Di, to aid them in joining the world on an even footing, granting them the following technologies:

[Curiosity - Project 2/2]: The Holy Nations begin looking deeper into the properties of the Blood of Yphine. It is a clear liquid distilled from the air so cold that it can freeze just about anything it comes into contact with. What's more interesting and useful, however, is that it works as an amplifier for ice magic - while the exact method is unclear, according to cryomancers, it makes casting spells nigh effortless. The spells themselves are not stronger, but the user can cast without spending energy. This indicates that the liquid itself can provide the energy for a spell, though how isn't clear.

    (Basically it's magic liquid nitrogen)

    Fluff Post

    -=MARCHING ORDERS: LIES AND SLANDER=-
A mass murder in the holy lands!

Calamity and Woe! The village of Easteros (in Sycia) has been utterly destroyed!

Reports on the matter are still vague, but what is clear is that every single man, woman and child in the coastal village has been slain and encased in ice, and while it is possible some escaped the slaughter, no one currently is living within the village limits. The village was well known for having a large number of Cryomancers compared to the surrounding countryside.

Could this be evidence of Gloria's secret cabal of Cryomancers, curried in secret after the public outcry against rounding up the cryomancers? COULD THEY have gone there to silence dissenters to High Priestess Gloria's rule?!?!

... Well, no. Of course not. Because High Priestess Gloria has been using this event as an excuse to form that secret cabal of secret sorcerers. It's not like you'd create an event to stir up public approval for something you already had. I mean seriously, at that point you're as crazy as a Modern Assertionist (we in no way mean to imply that the pathetic excuse of a satire author who got drugged and left on the Doge's palace steps has anything but our sympathy, the miserable little slimeball).

The "official story" for all you idiots who believe the "official story" is that a cryomancer duel was what destroyed the entire village. But we all know that's bull - it's probably backed up by "facts" about how magic works and how two powerful magic users build off of each other and wah wah blah blah wah.

However, Marching Orders never limits itself to pesky "facts" - they cover far too little! Here is some wild speculation with almost no facts to get in the way! Are we not committed to customer satisfaction for the unbiased view of modern life?!

Consider this, dear reader: An entire village has been wiped out by ice magic, and the people within are encased in ice when they are found in midsummer. (should i mention that they were found maybe an hour after the event tops and WHOA okay Sain calm down I'm dictating I'm dictating!) But they were found by a merchant entering the village to sell his wares, and yet were still encased in ice?! Could this mean that the people there were frozen in true ice?! Is it possible, dear reader, that High Priestess Gloria intentionally slaughtered (wait, mage tower? You really want me to say that?... oh, she did?... well that makes sense, I guess - can't have a magic order without a cool tower.) an entire village to blame Cryomancers and get public support for her mage tower?!

The ice eventually melted, but we already know that the true ice created by the High Priestesses isn't actually true ice, but squid brain that turns into true ice and then regular ice over the course of a long day (see issue #32 of Marching Orders). So it is indeed possible that Gloria is the culprit.

Not that we would ever accuse the High Priestess of such, naturally. This is simply wild speculation. The magazine is called 'Lies and Slander', after all.

(ya think she bought it? .... WHY ARE YOU WRITING THAT DOWN?!?!)
Hate me if you want. But that's your issue to fix, not mine.

Chivalric Republic of the United Free Cities
    "Land of Free Knights"

    Years 536-540

Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei of Kanyat (37-42)

Announcing the completion of her steward responsibilities, Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei resigns her position in year 540. She returns to Bastet and Ekbatana to be welcomed as the High Priestess of the Chosen of Inyannya. Although it may be some time to understand her leadership, the reforms of education and focus multiculturalism is probably the important legacy of her rule. However, the alienation of cities leaves the Chivalric Republic in a fractured relationship. Probably it is easy to describe her legacy as controversial.

    Constructing Garden City (4/5)
    (Faith Action)
All of the united tribes of Sphynks have gathered to the Garden City as construction is finished. only to remain is the religious ceremony, prepared for these many generations. The finished carvings of new Sphinx statues lines the beautiful city, and the painted walls brilliantly shine the evening light like a beacon.

    Constructing Garden City (5/5)
    (Faith Action) (Efficient Building)
    Spoiler
    Show
The new Garden City of the Sphynks is completed!
The priestess of the gathered twelve tribes of Sphynks perform the ritual of naming that has been passed down for countless generations, and the city is named Ekbatana, the place of gathering.
The gathered council of priestesses decides the leader of the sacred ritual in the secret meeting.
"It is decided! Because of the service and greatness risen by Yfa Da'at Zwei, she will become the high priestess to conduct the sacred ceremony!" So it was the Steward chosen for this important moment for the Sphynks, who have wandered for many generations, the founding of the new city, to become the center of all holy activities, and the cleansing of the Sphynks people of the sins of ancestors responsible for the downfall.

Music resonating from the buildings, the prayers of the Sphynks people rise to the heavens and a miracle is witnessed, as Yfa Da'at Zwei wears the traditional cloth and leads the united people in ritual to the gods.

So do we proclaim and request
to the high and heavenly goddess of sun, Inyannya,
to the wind of Winds named North,
to the wind of Water named East,
to the wind of Refuge named South,
to the wind of Destruction named West,
to the stars of the myriad Ancestors,
to the Sphinx messengers of all truths and lies,
that the end of defiling sins
    and impurities be cleansed
and the blessed favor be returned
as prophesied the end of the wandering era,
    coming together we petition
and with reverent awe, we respectfully declare.

It is said at this moment, the four winds rose and sang with their blessing, to acknowledge the prayers of the Sphynks.
So it was that the new Garden City Ekbatana became the home of Sphynks, who had been wanderers for countless generations. Let it be the pride of a new generation, prayed for dearly with earnest desire, be answered prosperity and fortune for endless years.

Unity of Sphynks Prayers Answered, the End of the Wandering Years
((Faith 5 Special: New Religion: Chosen of Inyannya)
Spoiler: Sphynks Religion: The Chosen of Inyannya
    Show

Sphynks Religion: The Chosen of Inyannya
    Era of Prosperity
The sphynks are the chosen people of Inyannya, the Goddess of Sun, Music and Life. The supreme deity, Inyannya rules over all of the lesser deities as a judge and queen, to be fair and benevolent. Sphinxes are her messengers and servants, and the four winds are chosen guardians and servant deities.
Long ago the Sphynks people were prosperous and close to Inyannya, living in the beautiful sacred Gardens of Inyannya, called [Garden Cities]. As the chosen people, they grew to great ability in the arts and unmatched culture.

    The Separation
Because of the many sins accumulated by the Sphynks, especially the arrogance and pride caused them to become impure. In the disaster and punishment, the gardens of Inyannya and cities of the Sphynks were destroyed. This event is called [Separation] occurred in ancient years. To suffer the punishment and atone for sins, the Sphynks became wanderers in the Sea of Sand, attending to religious sites at the ruins of garden cities, and continuing ritual prayers, music and dances for generations until Inyannya saw their earnest actions worthy of the return.

    The Return
The High Priestess Yfa Da'at Zwei succeeded in unifying the tribes of Sphynks in Bastet in year 538. Having built the new Garden City of Ekbatana, the prophecy of united Sphynks seemed to be concluding. The sacred rites were performed, and so it was declared the [Return] of Sphynks prosperity, to reunite in the grace of Inyannya and purification of sins.

The Era of New Covenant of Sphynks and Inyannya
Inyannya's cleansing of sin of the Sphynks and return of the Sphynks to the side of their goddess is the beginning of the new era. So long as the Sphynks remain united and loyal to their goddess, they may continue to rise.
Such an important point are the dances and music of praise and offering to the goddess, who in return blesses the chosen people.

    About Religion
Of course anyone can become a worshiper of Inyannya. It is correct to properly obey the spirits and deities, so it is proper to obey the supreme deity.
Worship must be through music and dance. Crafts of textile are woven patterns of life and stories of Inyannya, so it is proper to wear the clothes of Sphynks.
However, unless one is a Sphynks, it is probably unfortunate to not be as close to Inyannya. Perhaps if one prays fervently enough, one can become a Sphynks. Some humans may wear cat-ear headbands to attempt to show this desire.
However, most Sphynks will only politely smile at this thought. It is appreciated the reverence and desire of Inyannya, because it is the correct action. However, one should respect all of the spirits and below deities, too.
Especially the four winds are important, and the deity of Water, and the deity of Sands and the ancestors of the stars. Sphinxes are very much respected as messengers and spirits of Inyannya.
A Sphynks who does not obey the teachings is an unfortunate outcast. Such a person cannot be considered 'Sphynks' anymore. They are pitiful and unclean. When the Sphynks were all wanderers, there was unity in the suffering, but now one must be a fool to turn away from the merciful goddess.

    Education Reform (2/2)
    (Curiosity Action)
After ten years of education reform, the discontent about new education has subsided. Although there are some protests about textbook trouble, to not properly tell the patriotic history, a new generation already has grown with this education.
The reform has given many new opportunities to normal civilians, who can become bureaucrats now, too. As such, the councils in free cities are changing with lively opportunity. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a popular question for children. However, the usual answer which has become uncommon is "I want to be a free knight!"
While many students want to study to join International Hospitalers, wearing heavy armor after wearing school uniform for ten years is not enjoyable for many students. However, especially four cities have strong tradition of Free Knights and interested youth. Such a city are Fernbrake, Neu, Verbena and Rubia.
In this way, the Education Reform, to be called [Republic Children's Opportunities Curriculum] is finished.
Although Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei will be remembered by Sphynks as religious figure, probably this education reform is the lasting mark of her leadership on Chivalric Republic of the United Free Cities.

Fashion Industry looks to Fibrous Flame and UJR for new appeal
    (Curiosity Action)
Interest in other republics makes for scandalous wave of Raaneki inspired clothing designs in 538. However the result is extremely poorly received. The result is fashion returns to the popular Fibrous Flame and Sphynks Textiles to create new designs. Although initially there is some resistance, a new fundamental uniform style is designed for Free Knights to accommodate individuality and cultural pride.

    Situations:
    Spoiler
    Show

The Era of New Covenant of Sphynks and Inyannya: Inyannya's cleansing of sin of the Sphynks and return of the Sphynks to the side of their goddess is the beginning of the new era! Sphynks are insufferably proud and excited. There are many celebrations and happy events as Sphynks return to Ekbatana. Of course, many tourists also want to visit the new Sphynks Capitol, too.
However, there are rumors Steward Yfa Da'at Zwei will move the Capitol from Uran to Ekbatana. This is troubling for Free Knights who worry about the government's stability. It can be said the other cities outside of Bastet and Kanyat are uncertain about this future.
