She is learning. Spotting the floating mana, playing a decoy to lure out the trick? George taught her well. Not that Tensaided left it all that difficult with his facial expressions.

I suspect that is Tensaided's default expression while playing, though - kind of like a reverse poker face.

It really does seem to be, he might clamp down more when playing against a serious opponent (In Justin's match he was less evil face) but he doesn't take Sarah that seriously so he is just going with his evil face for now

I just like that even Tensaided's minions share his evil face

I'm confused: How did Sarah have enough energy to make two five energy summons in a row? She wasted all her energy last turn, and could only get one this turn, right?

In M:tG, you can only play one energy generator ("land") per turn, but they don't go away. She had 5 lands last turn, she still has 5 lands this turn, so she can play 5 energy monster from here on out.

They don't go away except in niche cases that are mostly limited to a single color (red), and which no one likes anyway because they're unfun and don't, strictly speaking, help you win the way a beatstick or a direct damage spell does (both of which red has in abundance).

Yes, I was simplifying - the game has been around for decades, the number of exceptions to generals rules have piled up. Other exceptions: some lands don't generate energy ("manna") at all, but still count towards the 1 land/turn limit. As Justin demonstrated in his game against Tensaided, some cards allow you to play more than one land per turn. And some decks are built to destroy the lands of your opponent, winning by attrition, so it was not strictly true that they are always there.

Rereading the Justin vs Tensaided game should give you a good idea of how it works, if the explanations already given aren't enough. The "energy card" Sarah drew is like one of the trees Justin had or Tensaided's mountain, which you'll notice stayed around turn after turn and were activated each turn for energy.

Note also that energy itself, as opposed to most things that generate it, disappears quickly if it isn't used, so you can't use a single energy generator to stockpile over several turns. When Tensaided "left three energy free", that means he had 3 energy sources that he intentionally did not use so that he'd be able to activate them during Sarah's turn - the start of your own turn is the point when activated things reset to become activate-able again.

I know there's a few different possible interpretations for today's comic, so I guess I'll throw mine out there.

I think Sam thinks that Tedd is transgender. Like, he thinks Tedd is trying to look like a girl, in order to transition. So his suggesting the name was friendly help, advice that would make it easier for Tedd to be seen as a woman.

I don't think it was anything to do with tricking Larry, and I doubt Tedd's going to actually use the name "Tess", at least during this plotline. (Maybe later, when he's actually transformed into a woman.) I think (I hope) that if Larry tries to push the issue, Tedd won't deliberately hide that he's a dude. But that's just me.

Huh. I thought it was a rather clear that Sam does think that Tedd is MtF and was giving well-intentioned advice - a bit indiscreet, in the "I want to show I'm not bothered by it" way teenagers tend to be, but otherwise reasonably well handled. Sure, Tedd as usual has no idea of what is going on, but that seems to be his thing. Grace and him were really made for each other, and they may need to order clue-bats(tm) in bulk.

Sam is trying to be helpful, certainly. He just makes the fault of not actually asking what's going on first.

I'm not sure if Tedd's been calling himself Tess at some point before. I spontaneously think he hasn't; he doesn't strike me as being interested in identifying as female, at least not consciously, and taking a female name is a step towards that. Then again, it's possible I'm just forgetting.

Wouldn't the female form of Tedd be Dora? Tedd is short for Theodore. Theodora => Dora.

Hmm, I do wonder whether Pockets' intent is the opposite of what we're suspecting here. He could think Tedd is FtM, and is trying to help him avoid any trouble with any transphobes playing today.

The first explanation seems to fit a little better, but either one seems plausible.

Yeah, it's pretty clear Sam is assuming Tedd might have gender issues and is putting a suggestion out as tactfully as he can. Which isn't very.

In other news, the Luke/Justin ship is now canon. Grace has all but decreed it - and no power in the 'verse can prove her wrong.

    hm.

-has gender-bent a lot before and is comfortable with it
-doesn't want to correct the person on actually being a guy, but still uncomfortable with his advances
-suddenly decides to have pink hair
-turns female to become a better cook
-has willingly worn a female uniform
-is starting to be more respectful around women
    -the "bridal fields" vision
-willingly grew out long hair on the logic that people will blame the hair and not his face for being girly.
    -mental projection was female
-wants to bring back the hammers

.....yeah, there is a lot of evidence that Tedd might be transsexual who self-denies it because of the bullying s/he gets for having a feminine face....

thats all the evidence I can think of right now though, anything else?
