Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 471 additional
The divine feat Elemental Smiting (Complete Divine, page 81) uses elemental turning (as granted by the Air, Earth, Fire, and Water domains) rather than undead turning.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
Q 472
Say I have a Dvati Unarmed Swordsage(s?), one of the pair having at their belt the fully-unlocked Legacy Weapon Umbral Awn (ToB). The other member of the pair has an opponent provoke an Attack of Opportunity... Am I reading RAW correctly when I assume that I can use Umbral Awn's Shadowhand to pull Umbral Awn from the first Dvati twin's belt to the second Dvati twin's hand for the AoO?
Secondarily, would this count as "drawing" the weapon for Iaijutsu Focus?

Q 473
In Dungeonscape, it states in the drill entry how many uses a masterwork drill has, but there are no prices listed. How would I determine the price of masterwork wood, iron and adamantine drills?

A 473 Ask your DM.
This is not a question with a RAW answer, as you noted. Because the Dungeonscape authors left a dangling issue, your individual DM will have to fill in what's missing.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
Q474
A factotum can use Arcane Dilettante to mimic a spell as a SLA. As taken from the SRD, "Using a spell-like ability is a standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description". When casting a spell with a cast time greater than one standard action as a spell like ability, is the casting time a standard action or an action "noted otherwise"?
I'm looking at Ghoul Glyph, specifically. I found JaronK making a statement where you can, but RAW seems to say he's... wrong.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 474
If the spell notes a casting time other than 1 standard action, that's noting otherwise. A standard action is just the most common casting time for spells, so that's correct more often than not.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 473 Possible addendum
The PHB has generic masterwork tools. They cost 50 gp. The problem with that is that a masterwork adamantine drill would be cheaper than a regular one.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 473 Addendum Correction
Generic Masterwork tools are 50 gp added to the base cost of whatever the tool is, and so would still require a price on an Adamantine drill.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 473 Dispute
The table on p. 129 of the PHB says 50 gp not +50 gp and the description of the tools does not mention either that the price is in addition to the price of a regular tool. It would be a sensible houserule to use it as an upgrade but the rules do not support it.
Also the regular and masterwork artisan's tools (5 gp/55 gp) follow that procedure, but regular and masterwork musical instruments (5 gp/100 gp) do not.

Q476: Races of Faerun pg 16 references the following: Anvils of the Blacksmith, Forges of Smithing and Whetstones of Keen Edge.
AFAICS RoF nor any other book I can find actually defines them anywhere. Are they in some other book or are they a mistake/cut content?Last edited by Tarvus; 2015-04-04 at 04:03 AM. Reason: Clarity

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
Two easy statements just to be sure.
I believe "Right" is the answer to both.
Q477:
A confirmation roll for a critical hit IS another attack roll and therefore two nat-20 in a row gives you a critical hit whatever the target AC is.
Q478:
Even if a weapon has a critical range of 19-20, a "nat-19" may be insufficient to either hit or confirm a critical hit right after a nat-20.
Edit: Thanks for this quick confirmation :)Last edited by Quild; 2015-04-01 at 09:21 AM.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 477
Correct. An attack roll with a natural 20 always hits, even on a confirmation roll. So everyone has a 1 in 400 (two natural 20s in a row) to score a critical hit on a target no matter how high the AC.
A 478
Correct. As with all attack rolls only natural 20s automatically hit regardless of AC. An attack roll with a natural 19 no matter the crit range still has to meet or exceed the target's AC.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
Q479
How does advancing in a prestige class that advances the spellcaster level of a previous class interact with the Factotum class? I suppose I must first ask if the Factotum is a "spellcasting class", and what defines a "spellcasting class".
Example: For Factotum 7/Abjurant Champion 1, would I be able to cast 3rd level arcane spells like a Factotum8?
If I do level up the spell level, then what would happen if I took all 5 levels in Abjurant Champion, and then went back to leveling the Factotum class?

You would not even qualify for Abjurant Champion. A factotum does not cast spells. A factotum uses Spell-like abilities.

Yes to both of them. They both refer to hitting, not damaging. Compare to Stunning Fist:
Stunning Fist forces a foe damaged by your unarmed attack to make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + ˝ your character level + your Wis modifier), in addition to dealing damage normally.

Q# 484
You can use a tower shield for total cover. Does this total cover stop a leap attack style character from using this feat / charge combination on you as long as you are angling your towershield to provide the total cover from them?

The total cover from a tower shield is pretty dysfunctional. It does not have a direction. So the character using a tower shield to gain total cover is safe from any attack regardless of direction. This of course includes charges, with or without leap attack.

The spell necrotic cyst states that the victim of the spell will now take an untyped -2 penalty to their saves against necromancy spells and effects. It doesn't state anywhere that it doesn't stack with itself. If I am able to get multiple cyst spells off on a subject, will the penalties stack?Last edited by sjeshin; 2015-04-02 at 03:20 PM.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A 485 No.
From the very beginning of the rules for magical effects stacking:Stacking Effects
Spells that provide bonuses or penalties on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves.

Re: Simple RAW Thread for 3.5: Score and Nine
A Wizard17 who gains a negative level does not lose her prepared 9th-level spell (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemasterin...egative-Levels).
Q487
Can she still *cast* it while she has the negative level, or does the prepared spell merely hang out waiting for the negative level to go away?Avatar by the incomparable araveugnitsuga!
