That'd be even more annoying than when online. Luckily for me, my phone's so basic it barely has any function other than Call People, Receive Texts, Send Texts and Play Snake. Also Radio and Alarm.
Less fortunately for me, said basic phone's SIM registration failed. Somehow. Probably because I don't use it more than once a year to call people.

That was my favorite part of FFXI, the ridiculous chats I had/took part in/observed with the jp players at times.

I recall one time when I was briefly involved in the drama-llama HNM camping game: every 21 to 24 hours after one of the big three (fafnir, behemoth, adamantoise) is killed there is a chance every hour for them to repop during a 30 second window. So people show up, hang out or afk, come back and spam frantically, then go back to afk... or have a bot doing it. After so many pops of the aforementioned mobs you are guaranteed (vs randomly getting surprised with) the upgraded and nastier HQ versions, so it gets really tense with the various groups up there competing against each other.

Sometimes the windows fall out of NA time into JP prime time and this is when it gets hilarious at times, I recall one of the JP tanks was trash-talking one of the NA tanks so they started going back and forth, and then I notice the chatlog says:

<JP Tank name I forgot after several years> Your momma blow up.
<JP Tank name I forgot after several years> Go to bed.

*all the NA players pause for a second*
*collective laughing and barfing and wheezing is heard randomly from basements around the country*

I'm guessing this was a google translate moment, but either way it was amazing. Closest I ever got was chatting up my little ninja-idol buddy Maje and I had figured out how to say roughly the following in romaji (I forget the exact proper translation I used, this is just a quick google translate version): Watashi no inkei o shōkai sa sete kudasai. Sore wa Gojira yori mo ōkī. Sore wa amarini mo kyodaidearu.

Which should be: Please allow me to introduce my penis. It is larger than Godzilla. It is too huge.

He pauses for a second then fills the chatbox with lololololololololololololololol, mission accomplished.

Basically someone in Scotland bought a dress for a wedding and sent a picture of it to . . . the bride and groom? . . . to ask their opinion of it. One person saw white and gold, the other saw blue and black.
Confused, they asked the internet (yeah, ask the internet and be enlightened).

Dress is blue and black in reality, but something to do with the picture's lighting and the specific way a person saw it (i.e. phone, laptop, tablet, a day, at night etc. etc.) makes it seem blue and black or white and gold or a few other colour combinations.

    People may still be arguing.
Well it's the internet, people are still arguing.
Even after owner of said dress took more photos of dress in different lighting to prove its colouring.

I think half of the reason to why people still argue is thanks to the propensity of Internet opponents to call eachother stupid. I mean, I can reason myself to it being black and blue, but the colours I see in the picture are white-with-a-hint-of-blue and gold-with-a-lack-of-lustre. Now, if I said that, and someone called me stupid, I would be likely to try and explain how I could see that, and then the would debate flame all the way up to the sky...

The only reason Eurovision was popular (I wonder if I should put that in quotation marks?) in the UK (and perhaps elsewhere) was because of Terry Wogan's commentary. He openly admitted to showing up to work with bottles of alcohol and he'd drink his way through the entire show.

    For me, it's like this:
I can look at the rest of the image, and see that it appears to be next to a cow-pattern which is presumably black and white. From there, I see that the darker color on the dress matches the presumably-black part of the cow-pattern, and the lighter color does not match the presumably-white. So I can assume that the dress is black-and-something, which from there tells me that the image is so horribly messed up that I don't have anything to judge the other color from (though it does look perhaps very faintly blue).

No matter what, though, looking at the image, the actual colors displayed on my screen are a dirty gold and a slightly bluish off-white, and that's what I see.

Then I saw a picture of the dress in proper lighting and realized that my initial perception: "this is a photograph shot in front of a window with a background washed out by daylight, and the dress is in shadow, so it is white and gold" is incorrect.

In fact it is a dress and background illuminated by horrid yellow lighting, and when your brain corrects for that you see it is black and blue.

You aren't wrong either way in your perception, this is how your brain perceives color after all, we evolved as a species which was active during the day, we adapted to compensate for the effects of daylight and to judge the color of something accordingly.

If the picture was actually taken on a porch in front of a window then it would have to be gold and white, if the picture was actually taken somewhere with awful yellow lightbulbs then it would have to be black and blue, as the latter case is true, that is the correct interpretation of the colors, though it is still possible to see it both ways.

I can switch from one to the other with a bit of time depending on what part of the image I focus on, but now it is still easier to see it as blue and black because I've got the mental anchor to compare against now.

I know about that whole debate, and I'm firmly in the GNU/Linux camp, but sometimes I get lazy and forget to write the "GNU slash". Unix (or Not Unix, in this case) hackers love recursive acronyms. There's Wine Is Not an Emulator, PHP: Hypertext Processor (although that one isn't really Unix specific), and an amazing one also from GNU, HURD. This stands for HIRD of Unix-Replacing Daemons (hey, there's that word again), with HIRD standing for HURD of Interfaces Representing Depth. Never change, GNU team.

Also, I bet that some people would call Debian/HURD "Linux", even though there's literally no Linux in it. Truth be told, I think that we should just drom GNU and Linux and HURD from the names of distros and call them by their distro names. But that's just my opinion.

It's odd -- I can tell that the light makes the dress washed out, and that it's in intense yellow light, but for some reason, I can't make it not yellow-gold or lavender-gold. I just can't see how the light would make the black gold. Maybe it's my monitor.

You just made me look up Combat-Juggling and now I feel like a better person for knowing about it. This stuff should be a big sport.

    Ugh. Tell me about it.
I'm not so Google savvy myself, despite being okay with some other more complicated computer (art) programs. But yeesh. I had to edit a Google Site today for my job, and that was insane. Took 45 minutes to figure something out that was ultimately ended up being pretty basic.

I don't often watch short films or animation like that, but it was pretty neat.

Yeah, I'm impressed with him. Evidently some animation classes have been showing it to students. Which is so cool, IMO.

This dress again? I feel like it's some type of trick. It's obviously blue and black, though some pics I'm seeing of it make the black part seem like it has hints of gold.

    Also, Hello everyone.

Okay, I really shouldn't, but I can't quite supress my computer geekery right now, so let's do an RGB analysis of the dress.

Averaging over the mid-shaded patch on the dark field on the top of the dress, I get the RGB values 0x54, 0x45 and 0x2A, which is this colour:

    ████████

Doing the same over the middle of the shoulder-arm-flap-thingy gives me 0x7D, 0x85 and 0xA0:

    ████████

So, taken out of context, that's neither black, gold, blue nor white. That's brown and... blueberry milk? No wonder people se different things...

That's what I saw, but you must consider the lighting conditions. In the background, you can see the color of the light, so I *think* you should subtract that color from the pixel values to get the true color of the dress? I dunno, I'm probably wrong, but it's worth a shot.

EDIT: So, I took the pixel value of part of the background (the less-white part, because the white part is #FFFFFD), and I got this color value:
    ████████

According to Wolfram Alpha, using my method yields the blue part of the dress's real color as ... black. That's not right. Playing around with the curves a bit, though, yields this:

I think a large part of the problem with the dress debate is that a lot of folks have the brightness and contrast on their monitors jacked through the roof... I've got an expensive zr30 monitor with a wide color gamut, and I'm an avid photographer so my eyes are trained to notice white balance issues and overexposure, so my monitor is set properly and my eyes are trained to understand what they are seeing, so my eyes immediately told my brain black and blue...

My eyes and photography skills were not the problem though. It has nothing to do with peoples eyes and brains seeing different things

I send the over exposed shot to my friends and they all saw white and gold... I was stunned and asked the follow up question 'what color then is the floor behind the dress and they answered 'its washed out or entirely white'

So the 'hint of blue' that told me the dress was blue was no longer just a hint of blue but a fully washed out pale gray or abject white to them on their screens. The gold artifacting from the over exposed shot was at least dark enough to show up for them when the gold of the floor was too light and got washed out completely form them. Their monitor setting plus over exposure equals 'white and gold'... I invited both of them over to see the exact same over exposed picture on my monitor and they agree that when they saw the exact same picture on their own screens it didnt look the same at all..

So MOST of the problem here is the settings you're using on your monitor. But the overexposure on the shot is responsible for exacerbating the problem caused by people wanting their monitors to be as bright and vivid as possible.

Not a single person would have called this dress white and gold if they had been standing there in the store seeing the dress in person... Poor photography skills and extreme monitor settings are the only thing to blame here.

When 70% of the population called it white and gold, thats not proof that their eyes or their brains are defective. It means 70% of people like to crank up the brightness and contrast on their monitors too high.

    People who queue jump.
Even worse: people who start a queue in the wrong place on the wrong side of the shop and queue jump in doing so.
Brits will truly understand. Hell, I've seen several cultural/etiquette sites with sections about England/Scotland/Wales/Ireland/the UK and without exception every single one of them says something along the lines of "Don't queue jump. They will disapprove."
There's differing opinions about hands being in your lap/resting on the table during meals (hands should always be in sight, but elbows off the table, please); what to wear; what to say; how/when to shake hands; slang; bringing gifts to dinner hosts and all sorts of things like that.
    But universally: don't jump queues.

I've seen people try, the expressions do not change, but you can feel irritation and disapproval radiate from everyone.

How prevalent is the dislike of queue jumping in other countries, and to what intensity?

As far as I've seen, if you want to queue jump, you should ask politely and/or have a good reason for doing so, otherwise people will disapprove verbally.

Also, on the subject of elbows on the table: it occurs to me that I've never done that. I checked myself and I automatically leave them off the table.

I see nothing wrong with elbows on tables. How are you supposed to eat otherwise? Do you just keep your arms stuck behind the table like inefficient T-Rex arms?

Generally (where I live), if someone moves ahead in a line there's a good reason for it (such as having 1 item to check out while the person in front of them has a full cart). Not much of a problem as far as I can tell.

Here in Sweden, it's prevalent, and fairly intense. Still doesn't prevent some amount of people from jumping queues, though...

You should keep the elbows off the table, which means pretty much just the elbows. With the correct table height and chair placement, there shouldn't be much trouble eating, but if you sit too close to the table, for example, then it may become a hassle...

I personally don't care especially much most of the time, though...

If hover hands isn't appreciated in hugging, it's not appreciated in eating.

True but I like resting my arms on the table and I will do it regardless
