    Default Adumbral Tarris

    OOC

The army returned home on a wet cold autumn evening. A mile of weary soldiers, wearier horses, and worn down wagons snaking across the country to finally be swallowed by the ancient stone keep of Tarris' kings. Peasants and nobles alike lined the streets despite the rain to toss late blooming asters and baby's breath.

They barely had time to stow their gear and rest their feet before being ushered into the king's massive banquet hall. From the drafty doorway to the roaring hearths, bodies covered every inch of the long benches. Not since the king's coronation had the hall been so utterly full. Yet the astute might note that the force they left with at the campaign season would never have all fit into the hall. Or that there jesters and bards numbered far fewer, and much of the feast was game and forage. Few of the soldiers noticed the latter, given that they had been reduced to near spoiled salt pork and bitter vetch the last week of the trek home. Yet the relief and merriment was real and palpable. Alive and home. Alive and home. There were alive and home, when so many weren't. True, probably only a eighth of the troops were actually from the Keep, and many still had a long road to their home villages ahead, but they would travel as civilians with proper food and a purse of soldier's pay. The War was over.

Arrayed by rank in the great hall, the king Himself raised to toast to Victory.

Ho, friends. Lookit 'ow the soldiers laugh! As if 'tis all over. Damn fools, the lot of 'em, eh? Heh, heh. Chortling, Bronn turns to his meal, says a short prayer of thanks, and digs in. He is not the neatest of eaters, and far from the quietest of men, but he keeps his beard clean and his plate cleaner, and laughs with the soldiers all the while. Now that this 'ole Great Evil bus'ness is done and vanquished, where we headed next, y'think?

    Trask, Half-Orc Barbarian - 105/105 HP | 15 AC

During the long march back home Trask was even quieter than usual. He often got down from Rust, his bay draft horse, to stretch his legs and walk a while - the going was slow and he easily kept up. At night he spent his time cleaning and whetting his weapons which gleamed with care though they showed clear signs of heavy use. He changed his bandages and found his injuries healing well. Once in his bedroll he unconsciously hummed a little song he heard somewhere a long time ago; unbid, memories of his sister washed over him. Every single day that followed was the same.

He was surprised to see so many people welcoming the assembled host, battered and diminished as it was. Some of them even smiled at him. True, sincere smiles of thanks. This moved him in a way he never thought possible. It would be a long time before he identified that feeling as hope.

As the crowds bustled into the King's Hall, people instinctively shied away from the large Half-Orc with the unnatural blue eyes. He tried to find a seat near the musicians so he could lose himself a bit in their music and managed to find a spot across from Bronn, the Dwarf Cleric who many times came to his aid with his healing and his hammer.

"Hhrmm", the Half-Orc grunts agreement at the dwarf's comment. "Maybe it's over now, but I don't count on it. The land remembers what happened," he adds. The war was terrifying - he was on the front, he knew better then many. "As for what's next, a fresh start is what I'm getting and all I could hope for".

Haimura had found herself rather quiet on the march home. She'd never really found herself comfortable acting within a military unit, despite her best intentions. She'd always felt she was more the solo act, but it was impossible to fight such a threat by oneself. After defeating such a creature, she'd found herself thinking about all the lives she'd chosen to end. Even if it had been well within her rights, and for the most Just of causes, Haimura had led these people to kill and die, along with the rest of her unit. The fact they'd managed to survive was a testament to the skill of her new friends. And as the war had been won, and the court found itself celebrating, the young lady of Tyal was in much less jovial spirits. Fighting was easy, but deciding what to do now was going to be much more complicated.

As she sat at the table, Haimura would retain her usual modesty, eating only her normal fill, though making certain to take anything that looked especially delightful. Small potions at a time to satisfy her hunger, and nothing more. As the others spoke of the war's end, and the problems that had come to be, the elven girl simply shook her head slightly.

"Nobody can save the world. We do what we can, as best we can. Trying more than that will only get us killed. This country needs to heal from its wounds, and no amount of swordplay will help with that."

    Kallista, Half-Elf Sorceress

Kallista had been quiet on the road back "home" to the kingdom. The King had pardoned her for all her help in turning the tide on the Evil that had ravaged the lands. Unfortunately, she was one of the "Evil" as far as most people were concerned. Luckily, for the most part, she had proved herself to her new-found companions. It wasn't an easy task to gain their trust by doing something that was even harder than that....killing her mother. Kallista will remember that day for her entire life and it will haunt her. Nothing in this life will be harder on her than what she had endured, save for how hard she will be on herself for having done it. She knows it had to be done, her mother was an evil woman and was naught but a killer.....but she was still her mother. The only person in her life that had showed her love. Kallista only hoped that she could find another that might care for her as much as her mother did.

Kallista sat behind her new, who she hoped were, friends. She tried her best to disappear behind them and not be seen by many, though it didn't work as well as she had hoped. Many soldiers still gave her awful looks, as well as some of the court. Kallista just ate as little as she could and drank only as much as she needed as well. She didn't feel as though she deserved any of this, so she didn't want to take too much.

Kallista gave a half smile at Haimura's words and said quietly, "I am just glad it is over." Kallista had come to look up to Haimura since they had been together. It may be because she is an elf that isn't evil and wants to destroy the world, or maybe it is the confidence that Haimura has.....but Kallista was drawn to it. She looked at the noble elf and continued her half smile, then went back to nibbling at her food.

    Trask, Half-Orc Barbarian - 105/105 HP | 15 AC

The Half-Orc turns to regard the ladies as they spoke, absorbing their words, drinking in their grace. It was a breath of fresh air after the war and he couldn't help but admire their beauty; even during the dark battles they shone as beacons of light as they fiercely fought - at least in his eyes. His heart held their presence, as well as that of his other companions, very dear, but his unreadable face betrayed little of it.

"I hope you two are right", Trask says as a shadow crosses his eyes. "But in my limited experience, swordplay is never over." He appears sad for a brief moment before tearing himself a piece of bread to mop up the gravy.

As Rolf scampers off to the kitchens, Bronn grunts and settles back in his seat. "Good kid, tha' one, eh? Shame he had t' see all 'e did. Gods willin', it'll be the worst he'll see, but yer right, Trask. The fightin' never ends, just up'n moves summere else. As fer me, if our good host'll let me, I plan to take a band o' soldiers back to Surga, an' see what I can do 'bout them beasties 'oled up there. Haimura simply shook her head lightly, as she toyed with the rim of her own glass. She didn't seem to have the energy that the rest of the room was producing, instead remaining as casual as she normally was. She'd think to herself for a moment, before eyeing Trask a bit, with a mischievous smirk.

"Well, if you are looking for something dangerous to do, you could always try escorting me back home, Sir Wolfeyes. I'm certain a big strong man would find himself more than occupied in the south. Of course, I don't even know how many of my people intend to even feast with us, let alone give you passage."

Kallista sipped her wine, little by little, and listened to the others. Her ears perked up at the sound of taking Haimura back home and seeing the elven lands. Then she got a little sad because she didn't think they would even let her in their lands, given who she was. Not on purpose anyway. Then again, going with Bronn to clear out his people's homelands sounded like a great chance to help the dwarves out. So she just sat, listening.

Varin is eating quickly, trying to sample all of the capital's myriad delicacies. He takes a break from shoveling food into his mouth to look at Haimura and Trask in astonishment. "Lookin for shumshin dansherous?" He swallows his mouthful of potatoes and gravy. "It's over! The war is over!" He's trying to reassure himself as much as his companions. "I don't know about you, but if I never have to handle a weapon again in my life, I'll be happy. I'd much rather retire to the countryside, where I don't have to wonder if every day will be my last. I joined the army to help people, but now that the Evil is dead and gone, it's such a relief to finally be done. Don't you think so?"

Nearly chokes as he hears the term Sir appended before what passes for his last name, the warrior turns to regard the Elf maid. A smile begins to form on his lips but stops short. Don't be a fool of a Half-Orc, he muses to himself. She cannot be serious and can only be jesting. Never could someone like that like anything like you.

The brief smile turns into a sad frown. "I am no Sir, Lady. I am a bastard half-breed, sent to the prison to rot and from there to the war to die. There is nothing noble about me."

He turns back and silently gazes into his goblet, staring at his reflection. He might not be noble, but he also wasn't callous or evil. "If you do want my help, though, you have it.

I am glad to be done with the war, Varin. But can we ever be free of danger and strife?"

Trask's posture becomes rigid as he hears the word faith. It's almost as if a light was suddenly ablaze behind his eyes. He quickly assumes his usual non-expression before saying anything.

"Hmm. I envy your devotion, Bronn. Faith is a... beautiful thing", his statement almost sounds like a question.

Trask turns his attention to his reflection in the goblet again, before draining it of wine.

Kallista hears Bronn's words and and hangs her head a bit when he mentions faith. "Faith can be nice," she says very quietly, "but you can have too much faith or faith in the wrong person. And then it can be devastating. Not only to you, but to the people around you because you are blind to the failings of what you have faith in. And that is one of the worst feelings that you can have. Knowing that your faith in something caused the suffering of so many." At this point tears have welled up in Kallista's eyes and a few have dropped into her wine. This is also as many words as anyone has heard Kallista utter since you have met her. She then snaps back into reality and looks embarrassed. "I am sorry for that, and for bringing the mood down....." Her faces flushes red and she stares back into her glass of wine.

Unsure of what to do, Trask hesitantly places a large, calloused hand on Kallista's shoulder; a gentle gesture, at odds with his size and gruff appearance. He waits a moment to see if she flinches away or accepts this gesture.

He then says nothing, but looks intently into her eyes. After a few brief seconds, he withdraws his hand and brings it back to his goblet.

In that instant, through no spoken words, a message was clear to all. You do not suffer alone. We all bled together and have been made closer for it.

Kallista does flinch at first to the hand on her arm, but only because she wasn't expecting it. She looks at Trask and gives him a smile, places her hand on his for a brief moment as well. A small, quiet voice enters into his head with a simple Thank you and leaves again.

She goes back to her drink and lets the others enjoy theirs as well.

    [Glim Turren - Gnome Illusionist]

Glim sat atop Mirage, his faithful mount as the column snaked through the countryside. The war had ended, and for the second time in his life he was returning with little idea of what the next chapter of his life would hold. He tried going home once, but that barely lasted before he departed again. He was once so happy as a happy-go-lucky intellectual scholar, but the war had changed all that, now, Glim seldom felt happy, and felt less and less scholarly by the day. The keep was imposing, more so compared to one of his tiny size, the large folk never quite understood how big they were, and how big they made things. Riding in as a "hero", Glim could already feel the oppression of the walls around him.

    ...

Glim barely heard the King's toast, trapped inside his own mind about his future.. and past. The food looked acceptable.. for human food. Like all human food it was way too light, and too green, and too soft... it was like they made up for a lack of heartiness with quantity. Glim remembered his first few weeks with the war effort, Glim had experienced a more difficult time with the change in diet than the change in purpose for his spells. Years at war, fighting along side Humans had forced his system to adapt to their diets though, and it didn't bother him as much as it once did. Taking a leg of chicken from a tray... at least chicken still was chicken... even if humans did over season everything... Glim tore a large chunk off the bone with his teeth, chewing a few times before swallowing. The break in thought required to grab the chicken leg was enough to make Glim aware of his companions dialogue. In war, as people die or get lost, units change, and this was the last group he had been with. As far as military units went, they were diverse and capable, that was more than he could say for some of the others he had fought alongside.

Glim sits and listens to the conversation for a little while without saying anything, it was nice to hear soe of them as clueless about their future as he. If there is one thing I've learned, it's that home will never be home again. Glim sounds sad but accepting of this fact. Faith.... in any form... can be a great benefit to those that are forced to transition after the atrocities of war.

Sensing a lull in the conversation, Varin decides to speak his mind. "I think you're being too pessimistic," he jokes to Glim, "And that may be a first! The war is over, the Evil is gone, and everything's going to go right back to the way it should be. You'll get to do more research, Haimura will take the throne, and maybe I'll go back to painting. Now that the war is over, I'd be happy to forget the whole thing ever happened."

I'm just not sure the labs and study will not feel too containing after all that I've seen, maybe I'll requisition a large painting from you, you can paint my entire study to make it look like a giant expansive hilly region. Glim says with a smirk, Maybe that will help.

Haimura was about to comfort Trask a bit, before the mood was a bit shaken. She'd stop herself, and watch for a bit. The others had their own reasons to be somber in times of jubilation, just as she did. It would not be until Varin spoke, that she'd react properly, completely losing her composure. Coughing and spilling some of her wine, Haimura's appearance looked entirely too embarrassed. She'd wave a hand in her defense at the man, quickly shaking her head.

"T... that isn't possible. At least not for me... The throne is a purely paternal mater, for... ah... many biological reasons. And forgetting what has happened here would be a greater sadness to me, than anything that is to come. Much was lost, yes, but I've never before had those I could call friends, outside of the Monastery. It is a good feeling, and one I cherish with all my heart."

    Kallista, Half-Elf Sorceress

Kallista smiled at the kind words of Haimura. She then spoke up in her normal soft voice, "I never really had any friends before any of you, either. I grew up around the worst of the worst, evil creatures that unfortunately the world was witnessed to once their masters came out of hiding. I wasn't allowed to have friends. Having friends means you care, and caring about another creature is a weakness....and you can't be weak." Kallista's volume had grown a bit as she talked. Her eyes seemed to stare off into the distance as she spoke. "I knew nothing of love or friendship, or even kindness. Anyone who ever showed me anything like that was immediately disposed of, and never seen again. I never knew what that meant until now." The color in Kallista's eyes started dancing, like a fire would, and the group knew that she was getting a little emotional when that happened. They had mostly seen it when she was in combat, and in fact her hands started to grow a bit warm which radiated off of her. She then looked at all of them in the eyes and the heat and dancing fire seemed to melt away. "Then I found you all. And while you didn't trust me at first, because why would you, you all have showed me what real love is and what real friendship is. And that is a debt that I never will be able to repay as long as I live."

Kallista then realized what she was saying, and had said, and her face flushed crimson, matching her scales. She let out a nervous laugh, "Heh, sorry. Drink sometimes makes me a little overemotional. Just, thank you." She smiles and takes another sip of her wine. A little embarrassed that she confessed so much, but at ease that is was out of her mind now. For better or worse, she trusted these people and she wouldn't trade it for the world.

After the few few courses and spirits are at their hight, the King rises, and at his gesture, men carry in a half dozen chests and set them down heavily in front of the clear table.

"My subjects, tonight, we celebrate victory, yes!"
He booms, and the hall cheers. He gestures the volume down so he can continue. "But we are also hear to honour our champions!"

Pages open the chests, displaying a wealth of assorted items, some quite clearly magical, some seemingly mundane, and one hat very obviously hastily painted gold.

"To the High General Forsyth, for innumerable victories and incalculable contributions in the war against the Evil, We award this suit of armour, made of solid Adamantine. May you never falter. To Zeric Relaigh, First Peer of the State Arcanists, We present this staff. We are sure you know what it is better than We,"
the king jokes, but few laugh. Zeric accepts the ornate staff gravely. The King continues.

"To Lady Amadia, without peer in both swordsmanship and virtue, We award this blade, may it bring you always swift victory."
And so the awards continue down the ranks. Until -

"To the Lady Haimura, as a sign of everlasting friendship between Tarris and Tyal, I present to you this Rod. May you weild it with the same good wisdom shown by King Gouran."

"To Bronn Haleheart, who stood as a bastion of faith for all, we award a personal bastion."
The king presents to Bronn a small iron cube.

"To Varin Zhorrel, hero of the people, we present to you this token of another friend of the people. It will serve you well."
He presents a small onyx figurine of a dog.

"To Glim, who fought nobly with both the State Arcanists and our irregulars division, I present this crimson cloak. We think its flair suits you."

"and Trask, we present these three rods."
    the King hurries along.

"To this bold unit of irregulars as a whole, We present these nine cloaks, to keep you safe. But they come with a warning that they must never be separated."

The presenting of awards carries on for another hour, and by the end the last courses have be served, and more than a few men sleep inebriated in their seats, kept in place by the sheer press of bodies.

Stay of late partying, go into town, talk to NPCs (generals, nobles, maids, whatever, give me a name of who you want to seek out or a description of the kind of person you want to seek out), explore/wander the keep, go stargazing, call it an early night... Whatever you like. You can split the party or stay together, as you like.

"I thank yeh, milord, fer this kind present. I've sum bus'ness I wish t' discuss wit' yeh, but it can wait 'til t'morrow." Bronn accepts his present with a slight bow, and returns to his seat. "Now, wha' in th' name uh Svarog is this s'pposed t' do, y' wonder? Heh. Heavy fer it's size." Bronn throws the small cube in the air, catching it and weighing it in his hand.

Haimura blushed a bit upon her own ceremony. It was only natural that the King would wish to have a great relationship with Gouran. Still, she hadn't expected anything to be given to her like this. After taking the rod, she'd move through her things, finding some loose straps as she'd spend some time carefully making a proper sling to hold the staff on, binding it well to her back. Using most of the festivities to contemplate the situation alone, Haimura would finally sigh, before calling a maid to her in order to deliver a message. 'Haimura, of Tyal, wishes to confer with a lady of Tarris. Please let Amadia know of this intent.'

Glim is awestruck by the bright red cape of fine quality. In a moment of old school jubilance, Glim bounces from his seat, smiling beaming, as he rushes to collect his gift. Bowing deeply upon accepting, Glim inspects it all the way back to his seat, bumping into a person or two, and perhaps a bench, along the way. As he sat back down at his seat, Glim decides it's best perform the required research on the item once he's outside of a crowded room and decides to put it away. The second gift was even more of a surprise, as was the warning that came with them, That seems odd... the only logical explanation is that the King has further use for us and wants us together. Glim's jubilance suddenly vanishes as the potential manipulation begins to unfold in his mind. As the ceremony comes to a close, Glim decides it would be best to use the opportunity to talk with some of the Arcanists to determine what they thought the future would hold. Stepping up on the bench so he could get a better vantage, Glim realizes that the added height isn't enough to afford him a good view, so he hops onto the floor and begins to walk around.

Ideally, Glim wants to find someone in-the-know, or at least someone that has some measure of authority within the organization. If he finds lesser members, he'd start with them though, in hopes that after a short conversation they might lead him to someone higher up.

    Kallista, Half-Elf Sorceress
Kallista sat and listened as the King made his speech. As her new friends are announced by him, and given items of power, she smiles for them. She did not expect to be announced at all, but delighted in the fact that her new friends were being recognized for their awesome accomplishments. She clapped for them all as they gathered their items and sipped on her wine some more. She was happy for them, but a small part of her wanted to be announced as well. To be given the public recognition of the biggest sacrifice she has ever made in her life. Kallista knows her friends, now, appreciate what she did....but not many outside of them and the King (along with his advisers) know what she did. She didn't even care about getting anything special, though the cloak was nice, she just wanted people to know that she wasn't evil. But, she supposed, that would be too easy. Trust comes with time, and she has a lot of catching up to do in that regard.

As the party raged on Kallista sat off to the side and just watched people for a while. After a time she made her way to a balcony and stood outside. She leaned on the hand rail and stared up at the stars. She was lost deep in thought for a long time, just thinking about life and all the things that had happened. She looked and the stars, and hoped that they might hold some answers for her.

Kallista will just kind of hang out with the party for a bit, if they stick around, not really getting into the party. She will then go to a balcony and just hang out there.

Before long, the maid returns and leads Haimura to one of the keeps courtyards. Alone there, Lady Amadia practices with her new blade, sparring with nothing. For a moment, she doesn't notice, or at least doesn't acknowledge, Haimura. Her swordsmanship seems excellent, but the long dress she still wears from the feast obscures her footwork, making it impossible to truly gauge her. For a moment, Amadia and the sword accelerate to an impossible blur, and Amadia stumbles as she returns to normal speed. Only then does she look to Haimura. She sheaths her sword and curtsies.

"Your Highness. A lady of Tarris, at your service (within reason)."

The Arcanists are all at the feast, except a couple on arcane overwatch over the castle. Glims old unit, its survivors, are there, most of them drunk. Sobriety increases as the ranks rise. Given the spirit of the evening, no one would be unapproachable, except perhaps Zeric Relaigh himself. A flurry of familiars sprint to and from him, bringing him short messages from other senior command staff, his own familiar occasionally sending a reply. Below Relaigh are the five Senior Advisers. Two, Jayal and Hant, sit with their heads togther, while the other five are mingled with those of lower rank. One, Andel, sits with a half dozen other arcanists of mixed rank, all drinking with unusual solemnity for a feast. Lemaire sits alone in a corner behind a semi-circle of wards, his eyes watching everything, and the last Senior Adviser, Tetrael, confers with three unit Prefects.

Haimura smiled softly as she watched the woman. She was fast, there was no way of stating that. Though Haimura couldn't help but be curious who was faster. She held a lot of pride in her own ability, so comparing things like this was only natural. Haimura found herself smiling a bit more casually, as Amadia spoke. The murmur at the end causing the elf to giggle a bit, openly as opposed to the polite giggles behind one's hand that fanciful events demanded.

"I'm just happy to see that I'm not the only one uncomfortable in a fancy dress. I left my most unbearable outfits back in Tyal, thankfully. I was just hoping I could speak with someone who could relate to my concerns. The war is done, my people are returning home, but I don't think that such a thing is the appropriate course. Tyal, and more specifically... I can still help this country. I'd do more good helping my neighbor recover, than sitting back at home. Besides... it would be impossible to flex myself back home."

Haimura giggled a bit again, as she playfully made three small jabs into the air.

    Kallista, Half-Elf Sorceress
Kallista stood, leaning on the railing of the balcony. She thought about the past few months and years and how she came to be here. She hardly thought it possible that the Evil that she once was so near is completely gone now. She is happy about it, of course, but she had known that life far better than this one. She wasn't quite sure what she was going to do.

She waved her hand in front of her and three small orbs of light appeared. She leaned her cheek on her other hand, resting her head on it, and used her right hand to make the lights dance. Her fingers moved and twisted in the air and the lights jumped around each other, flying this way and that. She would sip on her wine occasionally, lost deep in thought and watching the lights dance. She used to make the lights dance at night when she couldn't sleep. Her mother used to get so upset with her because they shared a tent and it tended to keep her mother up too.

Kallsita was sad her mother was gone. She knew it was necessary, logically, and knew that her death along with her god's death meant the salvation of these lands. But still.....it was her mother.....

How goes th' night, girlie? Bronn stands in the doorway, tankard in hand, listing slightly from the copious amount of ale he's imbibed. Yeh feelin' any be'er since earlier? As you can no doubt tell, when Bronn stats drinking, he's hard to stop. Don't worry, he's not an alcoholic or anything, but he'll have one hell of a hangover in the morning. Just tell him (or me) to shut up, and he will.
