Maybe neither. There's no reason the exit would specifically need to be at the top or the bottom.

I have to admit, I enjoy Goblins a lot more when it's being light and humorous like this than when it's all grimdark.

Psssh... It must be a True Bottomless Pit. And a Topless Pit too. ...I guess that'd just be an Infinite Shaft? Eh. Down'd be too easy. We already have a natural downwards express.

Ears is not wearing his armor since the vines things. Weird. I would have put it back ASAP.

I'm not sure what happens in the last panel. Did the axe hit something that shouted "DOOOORRR!"?

Maybe we'll discover that the top and the bottom of the pit connects.

Because its kind of hard to grab a door knob when you have a giant axe in that hand already? But yeah, put the damn thing down first. Or use it to extend your reach. You hold onto the very bottom of the axe, someone else holds onto it just behind the axe head, and they can anchor you so you can lean even further without worry of falling.

One implication is that there is at least one door into the shaft that doesn't open into the room they are in, and it sounds as if they don't want to meet whatever is behind that door, but there may well be other doors that would be useful to them.

Maybe he was using the axe to anchor himself before he fell? It has to weigh nearly as much as he does.

They aren't in Herbert's game, but I suppose this makes a certain amount of sense.

I like to think that Herbert the DM built this realm, and it works the way Herbert wants it to work, even when he's not directly in control. The houserules, like the number of Rages a Barbarian gets per day, or Wisdom stacking indefinitely as long as a creature lives, are probably things Herbert cane up with himself. So even without Herbert in charge, the realm still has some of his Killer DM tendencies, like Names' arm being ruined because it was healed without being set, or Goblinslayer being stuck on the broken pipe.

    or again easy solution that everyone seems to overlook;

It's a world that functions like our own and still follows the same basic laws of physics, but has game rules and magic rules applied to it as well. And that the world and everyone in it is a real living entity and not just some player behind a character sheet in the basement of some guy named herbert.

Thgere has been talk of herbert and players in the story yes, but as far as i can tell none of it has ever been brought up for anything other then humor.

    This is Herbert.
Of course, picturing him as a real human is only for visualisation. Herbert is a complex concept that makes up the very laws of physics in the world - a force of nature, so to say. It's just so hard for our simple human minds to grasp that concept that we picture it as a guy sitting sitting on a cloud living in a basement, but we all know it's much, much more than that.

Basically what I meant to say was that Ears forgot to take a Free Action to drop the Axe before he reached out, so the universe punished him for it.

You do realize that we know the very name "Herbert" because Forgath called for him.
Like here, or here, or here.

He definitely is in charge. Or someone answers in his name.

Um... yes? That's what I'm trying to say. I'm just saying that Herbert is only directly in charge of situations that involve Minmax, Forgath, and the three Drow hooligans, but anything that's "offscreen" to those players will still follow Herbert-like rules and tendencies. Ergo, the realm itself pulled something of a "you didn't say you put your axe down" on Ears.

My guess: touching the doorhandle on the inside caused the hidden door on the outside to rise.

So, maybe all they need to reveal all the other doors is a ten-foot-pole/stick,
or some stones to throw at doorhandles
And there are lots of little trees in their current area, to use as raw material...

i just kinda got the impression that the axe landed on some kind of giant monster at/near the bottom of the pit and it got angry and roared in a way that just happened to sound like "door" on text.
