It's probably considered Dark Magic. The only undead we ever saw in HP except for ghosts were the zombies that guarded Voldemort's phylactery in the water-filled cave.

There are the Shades created by the resurrection stone. There are also vampires.

Ah, true. There was technically a vampire 'onscreen' in the sixth book, apparently. I was only counting appearances rather than anecdotes, though, and I was just counting the shades as super-powerful ghosts resurrected by a deity-level artifact.

But you could also make the case that Volde "Whiny" Mort was some sort of Undead Lich with multiple Phylacteries.

The whole Hoxcruces process was described to be very very Dark Vodoo. Seems to me everything related to Death is looked with a nasty eye.

As for Vamp, they could just be living Vampires like Blade's, no?

Inferi actually show up several times in the books - those are the 'zombies' animated using dark magic. Voldemort likes them because, well, he likes murdering people.

Zombies are something totally different. They exist mainly in the Americas, though, so we never see any on screen.

The pictures arent souls trapped in paint, they get memories downloaded into them of the people they are drawn of. Like what snape did at the end, where he basically downloaded a ton of memories before dying. Thats why they act like the originals, because they have their memories. Now, that puts us in the ever so fun grey philosophical area of, "Are they alive or not?" They think, therefore they are. Yet they are copies, therefore they are not? I dunno. A discussion on this was done in an article I read about how terrifying harry potter universe is when you think about it, and they mentioned how a sick bastard could basically draw a portrait of hermione and a dozen random death eaters and have her be tortured forever, but then it was pointed out that this wouldnt effect the original hermione any, (other than creeping her the eff out) because there is no evidence that portraits are connected to the living person in any direct way. Mainly because we never see someone who has a portrait of themselves while alive, so its still a grey area.
