Default Manifest Destiny: Wolves of the Galaxy

Space..... The final frontier.... That's how that old show went. Humans had always drempt of traveling the stars, making homes on distant planets. It was thst same force that made to shows that carried over into the first half if the 21st century. On the Earth year 2053, man took it first leap into the void.
Centuries of dreamers and scientists had lead up to this moment, for it truly was…

    Manifest Destiny

…but the perfect world they wanted did not come to pass, for with them they brought the evils if sentient life. Crime spread amoung the weaker colonies, while old world hate and competition over resources drives skirmishes and even wars between them. New faces brings new dangers, and raiders and pirates scour the cosmos, looking for their next plunder. Drugs still run rampant, and corrupted men spread corrupt business everywhere they touchdown.

The Earth year is 2153, and the future belongs to those brave enough to make it.

You are in a cave, with no recollection of how you got here. It is dark despite your enhancements. You feel a force pulling you down the tunnel…a force you cannot resist.

As you walk you hear a machine running at the end. It keeps turning on for two seconds then stopping. For an unknown reason, you are drawn to this sound.

As you get closer the sound grows louder. ....vum vum…vum vum…. As you walk you realise there are shadows close to you, following the same sound.

You reach the end of the tunnel, arriving at a cavern. The shadows dissipate next to you, as a light shines on a walkway before you leading to the center, where an odd blue orb shines out of a metal cage-like device. It pulses with the sound, which has increased in speed and volume.

You cannot help but cross the walkway. You're drawn to the orb like a moth to a flame. The sound is echoing in your head. You reach out to touch it.

Then the light, and the orb, flash out. The sound ceases. From the dark, only feet from your face, a gravely electronic voice speaks.

"The daughter of another race seeking gidhood through their machines......we knew others would fall to it's temptation...."

Then from the pit below glows hundreds of red glowing eyes. They hum with the sound from before, but now it echos from all over hundreds of times. From in front of you the sound loudly returns beneath a bigger set if red eyes, flickering with enery.

"Soon......we shall meet in the flesh..... In a manner of speaking.......

You feel steel wires touch your skin, coiling all over it. They start to dig into your flesh, around even your plating.

"...and soon..... You will learn the nature of gods....."

You try to scream, but nothing comes out.

You feel no pain. Only cold numbness.

    *beep beep beep*

You jolt awake. Before you is Cora, your handy robot Secretary... Thing.

It play a recording if Robin Williams yelling "good morning". Then speaks:

"time to get to today's tasks...are you okay...I sense you are scared....."

The side of the bed greets her slow shuffle with a cool jester. "A dream", she admits, feeling where some wires pierced skin. The waking world already smudging the finer details.

    *updating dream journal*

"Noise" floods in as her various computer sleep modes toggle off. Her chats, news feeds, status reports, etc. all pouring in.

"Howdy. Anything need my attention?" She starts getting ready. She slips on some clothes. Holos wrestle for her attention as the walls disappear behind them. She brushes her teeth and plugs into her computer.

*update 50% complete* "If you really want to sense it I'll make my night public on the severs."

    "Let's have some fun today."

Cora acknowledges your response. "Oh...yes dreaming...well ut must not have been a good one....I analysed some if your good ones before, like the one with the ponies. You should just dream those." it says, not really understanding still how dreaming works. "Oh! It the oen with that one lady...the one where you both had no clothes and kept rubbing up on each other. You really liked that one, and it got your heart going and your dopamine levels rising." it stops.

You don't think it's making fun if you, as it never is when it suggests it, but it just doesn't understand the complexities of those feelings..... Least not from anything but text and images. But that was just data......not real thoughts.

It contunues. "By the way the Deriki and the carivalin are fighting again...so what you thinking for breakfast...Frank suggested Waffles...."

Her mouth full, she swallows the paste and flushes the toothbrush. Tossing the things in a secure container.

"Oh, don't remind me", She smiles. "I should just have those dreams."

A hand presses on Cora's brain and Farah walks past it out of the room. "We really need to improve your experiences. Get you some of those feels. You'd like it." Half-joking with it, "Have anything in mind?"

Her morning energy perks up to news of a fight. "Really. Let me go yell at them." She starts walking toward the mess hall.

"good idea. Those two are likely causing problems like fighting and gambling. Which reminds me, I already posted action on Murto knocking out that Reptilian biped. He sure can fight!" it says, wheeling after you.

    ............

On you way to the mess hall you encounter the fight in question. A ring has been formed out of the two sides, though your crews has many more Carivalin than Deriki.

Two figures stand in the middle. Both are going at it like wild animals (A not too unfair comparison), but have kept it to only fists and such.

The first is the Deriki. You know him as Murto Rejruc of clan Rufgtrei, as well as he happens to be both a veteran soldier and your current weapons specialist. His chitin plating is almost as tough as his no holding back attitude towards conflicts. That said....you know he's not stupid. Least...for a Deriki.

The other... who likely started this in the first place...is Zaharg. He's...useful for more tech based stuff. Especially the explosive type. He always had a certain level of professional charm for a creepy lizard faced pyromaniac. He does however have a short fuse.......

You recall that this is the third time since you hired Zaharg that this (bleep) has happened...but then again..... They are former foes likely. History can be a pain.

They keep fighting, shouting in what seems to be Carivalish, too caught up in their conflict to notice your approach. Murto gets a good shot in on Zaharg, but is countered by a headbutt.

She falls into the crowd without drawing any special attention to herself. Joining in with the crew. "Nice it's not over yet", she says to an enthusiastic carivalin next to her.

Scrambling back and forth to get a good view as the fight moves around. She tip toes at parts to get line of sight. Cheering on the underdog, "Get him Zaharg! Go for the soft spots!"

Zaharg hears you cheer him on, honestly surprised you take a side rather than call off the fight. He speaks back in Iigarn. " yes Ms. In'am. I'll kick his (bleep) right for you."

He charges in, knocking Murto flat on his back. The two wrestle on the ground for a bit before Murto gets knocked around a few too many times. Zaharg stands up and takes advantage of his current flatfooted status and kicks him across the face.

Murto stops resisting, not dead but fully knocked out .

The Carivalin cheer. Dancing like fools as the three Deriki drag off Murto. Zaharg taunts them. "Ha..look...his man (bleeps) have to drag him off he's so beat down...should of stayed in your holes chitin hides!" they all point and humiliated them.

Zaharg, not forgetting your backing him, turns and crosses his arms cross his chest in an X to you. (A sign of respect among his people.) "My thanks Ms. In'am, when I first heard you I thought my hide was skinned. But nice to see you've retained a loyalty started by your father. The Deriki are weak with pride, full of confidence over the skirmishes on Cyprus 2 all those years ago......Murto's a fool to think it was them who truly won that conflict...that planet was rightfully ours! Their stupid colonies stole it from us!"

For a second he stops. " .of course...you must already know all this, what with your fathers involvement in that."

She cheers 'em on till Murto is out. Emotionally bracing herself at the face kick.

She hears Zaharg out before gesturing him to pause.

Pointing at a couple Carivalin she shouts at them, "Help Murto out." Motioning to some of the Deriki already helping him. If they give her any delay she'll yell at them more, "Now!"

"You played nice and didn't kill him so I can put away my knife for now." She flashes her teeth. "What. Are you from Cyprus 2?"

He laughs at your dark sense of humour, though with eith a touch of nervous.

The Carivalin stand staring at you as you tell St them...not really understanding. Zaharg repeats your orders in his native tounge, and they get straight to it."not all of them speak the desert ones tounge as I do. he says, switching the conversation back to Iigarn

He then awsers your question. "Yes I was there....and not just for the war.....thst was my home. It is for this I hope you don't mind if I'm a touchy one on this subject, as losing your boyhood home to filthy (Carivalin tounge) is not a particularly hspoy experience. I climbed those bluffs, hide myself in the cool long grass. Now.... All I have if my old home is memories. Of good time before and times of death and hate. And love lost..... "

He stops there. "...but that is my problem, not yours. So how might I be of service to you today? Perhaps you've heard the old dark human's suggestion for waffles? He is quite senile and crazed in appearance..but that likely comes with wisdom, no? "

A voice calls from down the hall, in a most cajun accent "who you calling senile? You watch your mouth lizard biy, 'fore I show you a REAL (bleep)-whoopin!"

She can sort of, kind of make out a few of Zaharg's words, but she can only guess at the full meaning. An entirely unpleasant feeling. Completely willing to make a fool of herself she gives some low volumes guesses at a couple of the worlds she couldn't understand. "A shame. Not all of me speaks the tongue as well as I should."

It looks like she wants to ask more about him. The intent however fades as she decides not to pry. "We each have our history. I'll leave you with yours." She shrugs.

"Sounds about right. It's nice that you'll be joining me for breakfast. I needed someone to practice Carvalin on." She smiles. "I'll do the heavy lifting. I've struggled on a character. It'd be nice to get a fluent speaker to help out."

She stays (simply?) entertained as the "chef" acts up. She replies back, "Grandpa! How are those waffles? I heard your making junk food again. How many times has it been this month? I'd be malnourished by now if I didn't have a nutrient tank.." Making sure Zaharg notices her signal to follow, she starts a paced toward the kitchen. Stopping outside of it and looking in.

You see a old balding Black man mixing a bowl of waffle batter, wearing a apron reading "should do mire than just kiss thus cook!"over a denim shirt and no pants....though with the man's bionic legs that's reasonable. He speaks up as he hears you walking down the hall.

"Girl, who you calling Gramps!? I still got plenty a Uh-ra left in me!" He bangs his chest as he says this "Here I am making yo (bleep) sum tasty homemade Waffles an you hasslin me bout how they junk? Well you wouldn't know a good waffle if it jumped up an slapped ya outta yo chair!"

He shakes his head. "I had kids less annoying than you!" he chuckles at that last comment.

    Rakoim

You awaken to the sounds of beeping on the speaker on the wall. As sleep leaves your eyes the rooms nature rereveils itself to you. It is a hotel room, and thought mildly decorationed it is at least well maintained.

Part of you wonders how in the name of the sun you ended up here, but then again..... You've been asking yourself thst for awhile.

What you recall is that the family business has been taken over by thugs..no...Having thugs and cutthroats in fancy clothes trying to take over the family business. Your father was a fool to put it all on the line, risking Gran Fuosei's great legacy to the hands of such dispicable people. You almost didn't care when he got what was coming to him, when they shot him down after you ran. The sick freaks sent footage of it, just to get to you.

And that's why. Why you're here far from home, hiding in a human colony of all places. But here's where "Dave" had flown you. That's was not his real name of course, but a codename as to keep your Identities hidden. You chose your own code name, he chose Dave.

The beeping continues. It comes from a screen in the wall, identifying that there's a request of someone to speak with you.

If it was anyone else showing her disrespect they'd be starting trouble; however, Frank is something special. A bit of disrespect she can handle. "Morning. Gramps. I know. That's everyday." She wasn't too humble to admit that.

"Yes, it'd seem so." She jokingly gives Zaharg a menacing glance, but catches her own haphazard slip. And, gives herself a warning not to become too friendly with the crew.

Rakoim's eyes dart around at his surroundings, taking the place in. A part of him couldn't believe that he was really staying in a place this... mediocre.

"It is apparently true: The higher they stand, the more impact from the fall," he muttered to himself, pulling himself out of the makeshift nest he had arranged the blankets and pillows from this human hotel bed into.

He took a quick inventory of his few possessions, running a quick diagnostic on each of his devices to make sure they were in working order.

Taking a moment to stretch, flexing his curved body, he looked through the hotel window while he began to pull up the status of his cargo, in storage at the spacedock, as well as the local news so he could glance over the headlines. Then, assuming nothing had come up to distract him, he would move to answer the screen while he scanned through whatever passed for an interstellar commodities exchange in these parts.

"Speak, friend" he said after activating the screen.

You assist Frank in making waffles for the crew. Zaharg helps for awhile, but then speaks.

"Ms. In'am, as much as I eold like to stick around eith you. I might have things to do. That is.....unless you stil need me..."

As the lizard speaks in a slightly nervous tone, a voice speaks from inside the door way. "oh ya....bet your more than happy to assist such a fine lass....."

The voice comes from an thin yet slightly threating Irish looking fellow. You know him as Jack Daniels, though that might just be the name he prefers.
He wears a leather jacket and a driving cap, and points to you as with a teasing grin cross his face.

Current events: you hear from the news about the efforts to reestablish control of Zucuil by the D.R.F on Hera 3. Apparently, the tyrannical local government has pushed the freedom fighters back.

Also, a mining colony has apparently gone dark. They seen to be saying that there was some form og rioting amoung the small towns there. Nothing new has been reported except that the rioters have escalated it to....terrible acts....oh wow....those images sure are grusome....

And you recall that this marks a year and a half since the dangerous (supposedly Iigarin) space pirate "Star Predator" has last struck. Perhaps something afoot with that.

Business: (good use if a skill BTW). You recall mention of a highly teched out city on Helios 2 bring in desperate need of replacmet parts after a massive metor shower caused damage to it and the surrounding area. Besides… those crazy tech unions are always willing to buy that stuff off you.

Streetwise: you know for a fact they're after you and while they probably just want to kidnap/take you prisoner, it doesn't seem unlikely they'd be less than willing to make the choice to break your legs and such. That is....if you're right and they're not just going to blast you on sight and send you back in a dog food can......

He'd already started to pull up information about this error message to see if he could just fix it himself, when the knocking came from the door.

He quickly pulled up his personal financial software and the hotel's policies, scanning through them with his rapid Iigarin mind. Had he ordered this 'coffee"? He'd heard of the stuff, but had never tried it himself. Was it complimentary?

You see that the error message, though honest, seems too convenient.

The room service sounds genuine. Too perky for sanity sake, but genuine. You do recall that the coffee was supposedly complementary.

"uhhh..Sir? You okay in there? You need me to call the manager?"

The person on the other side sounds Arabic in decent and like a young man. Generally he don't seem more dangerous than a kitten.

Farah seems to be enjoying herself. It's a simple meal so it's not too interesting to make, but the simple act of working together with Frank boosts up the activity enough. She's mostly be neglecting Zaharg except for a few thoughts on why he's still around.

Oh, right. She moves on to cleaning up her area. Catching Jack as he speaks, "He seems too nervous to be happy." Which was a disappoint. She had heard about him being a fiery techie, but he mostly seemed like a nervous student. Too afraid of the captain to speak. Maybe the disappointment showed.

"We can have our lessons later Zaharg. I'll be taking my meal now." Half-dismissing, half-inviting him. She wipes herself clean, readying to leave, and looks to who will be chatting with/joining her.

Rakoim forced himself to breathe regularly. He was getting paranoid, and a quick search revealed that this 'coffee' was the same beverage as the 'java' he'd developed a taste for recently. Yes, a little bit of that caffeine could go a long way right now.

"Sorry, was just coming to my senses. Be there in a moment," he answered, as he went up to the door and opened it, stepping back a little to keep it between him and the hotel servant.

You disappointment might be well placed, but only.because this isn't his usual behavior. Around the ship he's s scary and sly witted individual, worthy of fear and respect. It seems to only be when talking to you he gets like this.....

As Frank starts wheeling the cart of waffles to the messhsll, Zaharg looks daggers at Jack. You fairly vsure he's revert to his old self.

"Silence yourself you runty little (bleep)! You asked you to soeak in the first place. If I wasn't sure Ms. In'am would disapprove if me kicking two of the crew (bleeps) to the fto I'd teach you do resoevt for your betters. Now leave my sight, you offend my eyes with your IRA imitating nonsense. "

He to follow you, but start sliding back into his nervous state. "*ahem* Sorry about the rude punk. He might know his way around the darker business, but knows nothing of boundaries.... Might I join you? I've not had breakfast either and you are great to have a conversation with."

    Rakoim

He walks in with a cart, a steel coffee pot steaming on a hot plate with a mug next to it. A few assorted pastries sit on a platter along side it. The man leaves the door open but basically blocks it eith his body as he only half steps in.

He looks to you with a quizzed face. "Hi ha.. Oh...your one of those Iigarns right? Haven't seen your kind before... Least not up close. You sounded so fluent u mistook you for human."

He stops, thinking for a second. "not thstvitsva problem... I mean.....didn't mean to offend you or something"

Rakoim looked this human over quizzically. He wasn't absolutely certain, but he was pretty sure that this behavior would be regarded as 'rude' even by lax human standards. Certainly his conduct fell far short of the quality expected of Iigarin servants, though he suspected that the field was not quite as respected or honored in human society.

However, he decided it was best not to make waves and call this human out. Probably not a good idea to make this encounter too memorable. He stepped out of the way and let the servant through.

"No offense at all. rather it is a compliment. I know there are some aspects of the 'Iigarin accent' I cannot rid myself of, but I've made a point of learning your language as well as I can." he said, putting on a smile that likely showed too many teeth.

He offers you a mug of coffee, then speaks.

"I was told to mention that there was someone who called the front desk for you earlier. Something about a business meeting. Not my business, but what you in town for?"

The Iigarin takes the coffee, sniffing at it, then taking a sip.

"My business, as you say in your language, is business. I am here to work out a kind of... import/export deal. Speaking of, if there is a call that came in for me I had better get ready and head down to the front desk to get the details. Thank you for the coffee."

He passes his card-computer over the cart's credit scanner and leaves him a token tip, definitley less than he would normally leave. This caused him to grimace at the state of his bank account. He wasn't sure what this 'business meeting' was about, but he hoped it would be the first step on resituating himself financially.

    Spoiler: questions:

Would I be able to tip him, or do I literally have no money right now?

She'll join frank on the exit and tap Jack's shoulder as she goes through "Try to avoid too much trouble this morning. You'll be on call today. You'd be doing me a disservice if you're laid up somewhere out of touch."

A look passes in frank's direction before Farah gives her full attention to Zaharg. "Eh, I'll think on him. Don't worry about it."

Bits of comparable earlier enthusiasm leak into her face. Excited and judging, "You swore me a conversation. You better not have thought of trying to back out."

And, a spike of annoyance has her disciplining him. "And, Shut the (bleeping) flattery down. I don't want nor need any lip service. I get enough of that from other people."

They clear the door to the mess hall. "So, why don't we get to practicing? I've struggling to enunciate my pronouns. Some are tongue twisters..."

You have Zaharg follow you to breakfast. He sits and attempts to teach you a bit of his language, along with any questions you might ask if his culture or race and such.

"Oh well then, I'll leave you to your morning routine. Take care sir."

He pulls the cart out of the doorway. Yiu are left to your own devices. What do you do?
