Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
I can't remember if this one has been done yet. Here's the lolcat inspiration -- one of my favorites!

OOOOOOH, that was Jillian approaching the tent that night?!?! I never realized that before, and it never made sense to me! That actually adds a whole new dimension to her character for me, as well it should!

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
It was a tossup between "Abstracted" and "Peeped At" for the final-punchline position.
I have a hunch that the resolution to the current cliffhanger might yield at least one more good one....
The Manpower one was inspired by various T-shirts using variations of the joke (character so-and-so has the same expression labeled with various emotions), so I gather the general concept is out by osmosis even to people who don't know Erfworld from Erdu.
My read on the "Fan Content Guidelines" is that Rob and Jamie reserve the right to adapt any of these derivative works for their commercial use. If they prefer to have specific permission, they certainly have mine.Last edited by SteveMB; 2007-08-05 at 11:20 AM.

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
"Abstracted" had more punch for me because I got stuck on the first two meanings of "peep" in that panel plus a third meaning that didn't fit with "at" (hangin' wit' her peeps). I didn't even get the fourth meaning until now.
I concur. IIRC, it says something like that in one of the FAQs of the Creative Commons license.Last edited by Scientivore; 2007-08-05 at 12:48 PM.

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
If you read VG Cats, you may find this familiar:
The dialogue is from this strip about Star Wars Ep.3. (Note: the link includes one notable instance of profanity, but is otherwise worksafe, assuming you work with grown-ups.)
I changed Scott's "agility" to "combat" to match the stats listed in Klog #4, and of course the name. I'm not sure if this mash-up will make sense to anyone else, but I thought it was too funny to pass up.
BTW, does the GIMP have a polygon selection tool? I couldn't find one while making those speech bubbles. Had to settle on freehand drawing instead for the pointy-bits. (And thanks to Sci for that remix guide, which did come in handy!)Last edited by zillion ninjas; 2008-10-04 at 12:49 AM. Reason: photobucket fix

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Glad it helped! Polygon selection in the GIMP is done with the Path tool. Click once in the bubble, a second time for the tip of the tail, a third time in the bubble, and then click the "Create selection from path" button. On the menu of the main image window, choose Edit --> Fill with BG color (assuming that's white). I don't know how to multi-select layers in the GIMP like I do in PSE5, so I would do all that on the same layer as the bubble itself to make it easier to move them around together. In PSE5, I keep them on separate layers just because it's easy to manage (with groups of linked layers) and I don't necessarily know in advance when I might want to adjust the tail's placement.
You can also open a Paths palette from File --> Dialogs --> Paths, but I haven't found it useful.Last edited by Scientivore; 2007-08-12 at 01:11 AM.

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Ah, so that's what I missed. I did try that path tool, but it didn't seem to actually make a selection. I probably should have just RTFM.
Thanks for the advice. If I have any more questions, I think I'll take them to your guide thread in A&C, rather than clog up this thread with more technical details."We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Heh.
I just realized that there was an image from early on that perfectly suited one description of Jillian's current situation, and tweaked the magnet set accordingly. (I also ended up deciding that "Abstracted" made a better final punch line, and switched its position to the end.)

Having obtained an Enhance Button for my computer through connections I am not at liberty to disclose, I've begun applying it to the comic, and discovered some hitherto unsuspected layers of detail:

Hello ForumLanders! Seems I dropped off the face of the planet for a while with my Unspecific Number of Cardinal Virtues and Sins list, hey... Uni started, time got away, you know how it is. Well, those of you who are university-age or above would. Maybe I should finish what I started, hmm.

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Thanks! The Sizemore one was just a call-back to his "when life gives you crap" comment. The Stanley one was inspired by an Austin Lounge Lizards song titled "Jesus Loves Me But He Can't Stand You".
EDIT: With a bit of Applied Phlebotinum, the Enhance Button can actually read documents from the other side (right through someone's armor-clad hand, even!), as demonstrated here:

This ones my first LolErf / Remix: please forgive the cheesy font, but I don't have Gorilla Milkshake in poor old Photoshop 2.0.
Obviously, there is a tip of that hat here to OotS (like anyone didn't pick it...)

Re: Motivators and Lolerfs (image-heavy)
Well, that answers one important question about Erfworld geography - Gobwin Knob is clearly somewhere in Nigeria. An important find!
I think you're behind on your scientific literature, though. Obviously, the original image was recorded holographically, and the Enhance Button just rotated it around the y-axis so you could view the other side of the paper. That's why the letter isn't mirror-reversed. *nods knowingly*
Naturally, I've tracked down your HW supplier and secured an Enhance Button of my own. I'll post some results after I've skimmed through the 900-page manual. Which, unfortunately for me, is in Mandarin. Now where's that quick-start section..."We are all agreed that your theory is crazy. The question that divides us is
whether it is crazy enough to have a chance of being correct."
