I'm wheezing at the last panel.

Yeah, and I called that round 2 is going to be a LOT less one-sided in favor of Pellan. Guess it's less of "Cat sucks at fighting" and more of "this is her first time using a sword, cut her some slack guys".

Well, we already knew she can kick ass when powered up by the Storm from the bandits. I think what Pellan was more (trying!) for here was how she can do without it, since it sounds like the duel's just supposed to be with swords.

To be fair to Cat, this looks a lot less like her sucking and a lot more like Pellan just being that good at fighting.

I have to admit, Vis does seem rather imdimidating in panel 2.

Actually getting kind of pumped up now. I can't decide if this scene should have a badass soundtrack or be one of those ones where there's no music at all, just the natural sound effects. (I lean towards the latter.)

I just caught up on a lot of big stuff I missed. Shoreward, Hats off to thee, your work is engaging and inspired. so memorable that all this time later I still remember where I left off and the context, and am still compelled by the characters, now more than ever, I think :)

Ah a +5 bonus against Evil, I see.

So I’m guessing we’re headed to a theoretically killing blow that doesn’t kill Pellan thus proving his innocence.
Or not, since that’s kind of the obvious development.

Nah. Pellan surviving doesn't prove he isn't a shade.
It just means the shades found a way to protect themselves from the light.

Either that or Pellan wins but somehow still looses the trial.
Somehow. Maybe he breaks Vis favourite plank in the progress.

I don't get it. What are they surprised about? Did they expect him not to try to avoid being killed?

Also "Perhaps effort is required"? You're trying to kill somebody/vainquish a demon, did you really expect not to have to make an effort? what kind of demon-hunter are you, even?

They thought he'd be a good little abomination and just roll over and die.

With the motion lines in the second panel and how Pellan's on the other side in the third panel, I think they're surprised at how fast he moves.

The kind that purports to hunt demons so efficiently that they consider it effortless, I would guess.
