Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Eleanor
"I don't know why anybody bothers with the heads," she mutters as she pries Exogenesis out of the creature's rib cage.
"Numiel sends many lessons," Eleanor assures Numius. "I'm sure we've all got plenty left to learn."

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Scarecrow
Scarecrow laughs as he glances at Numius. "Adventuring leads to many precious experiences and lessons. Victory tempers the body, loss quenches the soul. Your mind becomes fortified, your will grows sharp... Under the stress of such life, the rate of growth is incomparable to any other lifestyle. Perhaps the role you have to play in the future will require much of you, and this is the way for you to obtain much needed strength."
"As for humility... One must remember that even as we use these foes as our stepping stones in the road to power, there are many more capable than ourselves that would not hesitate to trample over us on the way to their goals. We as well, have suffered several defeats... Be glad that your surprise is positive and caused by allies, as from experience I can assure you that the other way around is far less pleasant."A wise monk trains both mind and body, but a smart monk is actually a swordsage.

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Doldor
The druid speaks a quiet rite over the fallen hydra, that it might return to the earth and be cleansed of the evil impurities that had befallen it. He also observes the hydra's form with a more clinical eye, should he ever need to take the form of such a beast in the future.
He then gestures at the spoils of the battle. "Would you prefer we divide this now, Numius? We often wait until a mission is over before bothering with that sort of thing, truth be told. As for the wand, I'm able to use it, but someone else can hold it if they'd prefer. I doubt we'll need Daylight in the desert, but it may come in handy later."

Numius
Numius nods wisely as Scarecrow speaks to him. Then listens as Doldor speaks to him. "We have better things to do then count out coppers now." Numius says in agreement.
He takes his backpack off Titan and puts it on, along with the banner of Numiel mounted to it.

As long as it is held aloft, the banner automatically suppresses (but does not dispel) fear effects on all creatures within 20 feet. It also prevents any creature within 20 feet from becoming confused or stunned.Last edited by Jopustopin; 2018-09-06 at 05:24 PM.

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Romus
And so it is that the party collects what they can (it'll just go to bandits and scavengers otherwise), and heads on to Campus Dentis-Leonis!
On their way, they startle a Tiny snake off the road and into the brush. That's all.
They reach Campus Dentis-Leonis, have a brief snack, and then head south into the desert, towards where a dark purple cloud looms on the horizon!
The desert is harder going. It's unpleasantly hot (but not so hot as to overcome Scarecrow's invocation), but at least it's dry. The air is not super-thin, because the plateau is only a thousand feet above sea level. And there is a pervasive aura of wrongness that only increases as the party travels towards the dark purple cloud.
In the desert, the party comes across three pegasi, horses with great majestic wings! They eye the party, and flee off to the east (they are sensible enough not to follow the Prometheus School Of Running Away From Things).
As they fall under the dark purple cloud, the party comes across four apparently female women in diaphanous robes, their faces shaded by hoods.
The four women discuss amongst themselves when they see the party approaching. Nobody has any sense of these women's nature, they're maybe just women, though why out in the middle of the desert near the malevolence? Suspicious.

Scarecrow
Scarecrow has conflicting thoughts regarding the situation. Hiding one's true nature? Didn't he do that for quite some time until he had enough strength to be safe while walking in the open? Being found in strange circumstances? What adventurer didn't have that happen to them? These women are leaving such a place, but they are going towards it. Both actions are suspicious. Of course Scarecrow wouldn't disregard the situation just because of that, but he wasn't willing to be hostile over the scarce information they had so far.

Scarecrow detects magic! There is some magic on the women!
The women continue to move forward.
As the party is forewarned, nobody is subject to a surprise round when the women throw back their hoods, revealing nests of serpents for hair, and begin to look balefully at the party!
Doldor is the only one who actually knows what these ladies are (yes, medusas, they turn you to stone by looking at you) once they reveal themselves, but as soon as they do, he can shout to the party to avert their gazes. (And no, this time there is no "if you make the save once you're immune for 24 hours" clause.)
Initiative order is Eleanor, then all four medusas, then the rest of the party. Notice that the rough sand and rocks means the entire battlefield is difficult terrain.

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Scarecrow
Scarecrow couldn't help but question this attack. They had an advantage of numbers, and even if they weren't renown, from their equipment alone their strength should be somewhat apparent. A straightforward attack would imply that the female women monsters are somewhat confident that they could win, or at least harm, the party... The group was vigilant, so it should have been pretty obvious that there was no opportunity to sneak attack. Leaving was an option, they could have regrouped and attacked later, but they didn't hesitate to attack... It didn't look like they were desperate either. What was going on?
Even with those doubts, Scarecrow closed his eyes and unleashed his attacks without hesitation, fully intending to answer Eleanor's expectations.

Doldor directs the party, and Marcus, to close their eyes as soon as can. "They can turn you to stone with a glance, and I can't fix it. We can win this with our eyes shut. Wait before rushing in!"
If the group isn't yet in melee, he'll move to get an angle on the medusas, then blast them with a massive Blast of Sand. If they're already tangled with the party, he'll have Marcus spray acidic blood, and he'll cast Dessicate on one of them.

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Desertum Plateau
Pretty much the whole party closes their eyes (I'm gonna say you can do that as a free action even while flat-footed).
Eleanor urges Scarecrow forth, andcouldn't reach the medusas anyway because the difficult terrain makes them slightly too far away. So she just moves close enough to bonk where she thinks they may still bemoves up to the medusas and tries to slay one but misses.
Scarecrow moves to within 30' of the medusas (dragonborn breath is 55', but the DFA one is still only 30' as far as I can tell), and barfs fire! One medusa makes both her saves (one on a natural 20), another makes her second save, the other two completely blow both saves. The three to the east completely asplode after the two breaths; the westmost merely looks extremely unhappy.
The remaining medusa, seeing that the party has her schtick rumbled and have made themselves immune to it and three of her companions are dust and she's extremely fried... turns tail and run.
Shian... bah, flies high above the battlefield, well outside the medusas' 30' gaze range, and does not close his eyes, and instead reports telepathically on the current square where the medusa is.
Numius delays.
Doldor instructs Marcus to follow the medusa to the best of his ability. Unfortunately, bloodstrikers do not have Scent like some dinosaurs do, so he just blunders forward trying to find her. Fortunately, Shian is guiding them, so he ambulates forth to within 30' of the relevant square. He sprays acid blood, which the medusa fails to avoid but which fails to kill her.
Then Doldor... saves his higher-level spell slot and goes with his secondary plan, desiccating the remaining medusa, whom he can target because Shian is feeding him targeting information. The medusa fails her save and the water evaporates from her body and she collapses, a desiccated husk.
Namia moves towards the corpses!
Numius gains 1067xp, Eleanor and Namia and Doldor gain 667xp each, Scarecrow gains 550xp, and Shian gains 333xp. (Normally Shian would recieve no XP for non-participation in the battle, but I let him be passively useful, which I figure merits half XP.)
On the bodies of the medusas, the party finds items, which Scarecrow identifies: miscellaneous coins worth 5600gp, miscellaneous gems worth 4400gp, potion of bull's strength, potion of cure light wounds, potion of delay poison, potion of shield of faith +2. (The gems include, but are not limited to: an opal, a spinel, a citrine, a tourmaline, a sardonyx, several quartzes, several garnets, and several chrysoberyls.)

Doldor has Marcus sniff around before he feels comfortable opening his eyes. "Aye, that's all of them," he calls out after surveying the scene for himself.
He huffs out a breath as the party looks over the loot the medusas have collected. "That's quite a haul! They must have been doing this for a while. Quite confident of them, to attack a party as obviously dangerous as ours. Still, I'm glad we could end a deadly threat to travelers without any casualties of our own."
With everything sorted, he and Marcus will lead the way forward.

The half-dragon opened one eye and looked around. While he didn't see how powerful his allies were he could feel and hear it. He swallowed slowly as he realized that his allies slaughtered their foes in less than six seconds with their eyes closed. Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Desertum Plateau
And so it is that the party heads deeper into the desert, under and into the strange purple cloud and fog which the party (mostly Doldor) judges to be harmless but definitely a sign of a corrupted manifest zone. (Doldor's even got Detect Manifest Zone, which detects the purplefoggy area as a manifest zone if he uses it.)
Eventually, the party comes through the fog to a ring of nine standing stones, which Numius recognizes as the henge* that surrounds the portal to the Celestial Plane of Light! Each rock pillar is about 50 feet tall, raw unhewn stone that is bluish-white and oily to the touch. Numius recalls that the color is normal; the oiliness not so much.
* Yes I know a henge is technically the, like, earthen berm thing and what I'm describing are more properly called "standing stones", but when you say "henge" everybody pictures Stonehenge, so, that.
Between each stone is a sort of vaporous, unsolid wall, and over the walls a dome, a coiling, blue/black/purple mass. Shian identifies this as raw, but somehow extremely tainted, incarnum. Occasionally, a ghostly form passes close to the surface, or even pushes outward from the surface, of the vaporous wall -- trapped souls, pre-birth or post-death? Everyone agrees that this wall isn't something you want to touch, much less walk through, although it probably wouldn't actually stop you from walking through, it would be a Deeply Unpleasant experience.
Finally, having made a circuit around the wall and stones, the party finds on the eastern wall, between the two easternmost stones, a hole in the wall, a door swirling with bluish energy. It blocks sight and sound like the walls do, but looks much less unhealthy and much less deleterious to touch than the walls.

Re: Megadungeon B (IC) III
Doldor
Doldor does use his power to Detect Manifest Zones liberally as the party approaches the portal to the Plane of Light, just to keep an eye out for any portals that may be disguised or hidden from view by magic.
Once the party has reached the corrupted portal, he takes his time to carefully observe the structure. "Did it look like this before it was corrupted, you think?" He mutters, not really expecting an answer.
After Shian has had a few minutes to inspect the portal for traps or other magical effects, Doldor will summon a monkey. He directs the monkey to stick its arm in the portal. The monkey gives him a suspicious look, but does as directed. If nothing happens, Doldor will then direct the monkey to walk into and then back out of the portal (if it can).

Namia
Namia chuckled awkwardly as she reached the bodies of the Medusas. They fell before she could even reach them. Her face was showing relief but her eyes showed a bit of disappointment she did not get a piece of the action. Still, she composed herself, smiling at her capable companions. "Indeed. Glad they did not get a chance to retaliate though." She helped her companions pack.
Soon they were at the portal and Namia marvelled at the sight as much as she dreaded it. It certainly looked dangerous, but perhaps she could be of assistance here. She entered her battle stance as she waited for what might come, hammer at the ready, preparing to enter her rage at the first sight of an enemy coming through it.

Desertum Plateau
Even though I have used the swirly simoleon symbol that I normally reserve for portals, Doldor identifies the swirling bluish door as not a portal, or at least not an interplanar one. It really seems like "door" is the closest approximation of a name for it.
Spoiler: NamiaIt's very wibbly, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt much to allow the following re readying a full-round action: split it into two standard actions, do the first standard action (beginning the full-round action) on one turn, then ready the second standard action (finishing the full-round action) for whatever you want to respond to. This is mostly to permit the classic "knife to the throat" coup-de-grace-if-you-try-anything trope, but it works for Namia's rage, too. So she does that. Standard action to begin beginning to rage on one turn, standard action to ready the standard action of concluding beginning to rage on second turn, subsequently has rage as a standard action readied.
Indeed, when Doldor conjures a monkey and directs it to touch the bluish energy field, the energy field immediately winks out and stops blocking sight and sound, revealing within: a strangely-shaped area, surrounded by more of the wall of souls, with three more of the bluish door things at the far end.
Within the inner area: darkness, and two creatures! Or something. Probably creatures. Definitely not friendly. Shadowy midnight-blue forms hover in the air, their vaguely humanoid forms twisting and reshaping constantly, but regardless of how their features change, their visages retain expressions of menace.
Shian and Numius both identify these as incarnum wraiths! They're like regular wraiths (so, incorporeal, touch attack drains Constitution), but formed of pure incarnum, hating all living creatures, and it has special hatred for and effectiveness against meldshapers: if it strikes a creature that can shape incarnum, then it drains essentia instead of Constitution (the lost essentia return when the incarnum wraith is slain), and if it slays a creature that can shape incarnum, the victim rises as another incarnum wraith.
Good news: the incarnum wraiths, despite being incorporeal, appear unwilling or unable to pass through the wall/ceiling of souls -- perhaps they would become trapped like the souls already trapped there? -- nor the floor of bluish sand.
Combat
The wraiths don't even give the party a chance to speak before hissing and floating swiftly forth and attacking... the monkey!
- but Namia's readied action takes effect and she flies into a rage -
The first one extremely touches the monkey in a bad place, dealing the monkey 4 damage and the monkey fails its Fortitude save so it also takes 4 Constitution drain, which reduces its hp an additional 2, leaving it at -2, so it hoots and shrieks and vanishes into the aether, unsummoned.
The other wraith has its choice of targets! But it appears resistant to the idea of emerging out into the relative light, deep sandy purple storm notwithstanding. And Eleanor, despite her surprise, is wielding Exogenesis readily. So it... scoots around to an area past the wall where it can't easily be seen or targeted.
