Winter will note that Gaye is sick. At first, Winter thinks it is filth fever, because that would make sense. However, the various tough patches of graying skin and gums pulling away some from her teeth ... Gaye seems to have developed "ghoul fever." It isn't contagious, but if she ends up succumbing to it, that means she could become a ghoul. Gaye is not given a clean bill of health regardless, because of how it may terrify the survivors in the chapel.

Haru, Zoo .... what are your thoughts? Do you stay with the sick and take what comes? or, after Winter gives you your clean bills of health do you go to the chapel?

So, it will be an odd setup .... Jean, Javert, Gaye in what is now the "sick room."

Zoo and Haru outside, part lounging, part guarding. Just because Haru doesn't need sleep doesn't mean he doesn't get tired of conducting certain tasks, and can only really guard for 8 hours at a time before he is distracted anyway, so Zoo will take over for Haru, and then they do six-hour shifts.

Akbar, Björn, and Lord Hanley stay in the chapel.

    Spoiler: Björn
    Show
Since you have a day where you do not need to strike out against unknown monsters and crazed cultists, you totally "dress down" your normal battle setup on your magical suit (you don't even know "what" it is, necessarily, where it comes from, or how it is fashioned). You drop the slashing razors on the gauntlets, the speed boosts, the mental dampeners and physical boosters, and the pulling pneumatics to do as much tinkering as you can today.

But since tinkering might take all day, you experiment to see what other spirits might be out there. You conduct your seance, but this time - since you are in a holy place after all - you contact the spirit of a long-dead Gorumite warpriest by the name of Chaplain Noah. You unlock the Hierophant Spirit option. It is a poor fit, given your own limited insight, but at least you know it is an option should you need it in the future...
    Spoiler: Hierophant Spirit
    Show
    Hierophant

A hierophant spirit is a being of true and pure faith.
Spirit Bonus: When you channel a hierophant, your spirit bonus applies on Wisdom checks, Wisdom-based skill checks, and Will saves.
Seance Boon: Your healing spells and abilities heal an additional 2 points of damage to each target. This does not affect healing conferred by magic items, nor does it add to fast healing or similar effects.
Favored Locations: Altars, churches, sacred groves, shrines.
Influence Penalty: Whether the spirit hopes to offer a chance for redemption or to sacrifice foes later on a dark altar, You must strike for nonlethal damage in combat whenever possible. You take a penalty equal to your spirit bonus on all Charisma checks and Charisma-based skill checks involving worshipers of faiths other than the spirit’s, except checks to convince others to convert to the spirit’s faith.
Taboos: Choose one: you must strongly revere nature and may not wear metal armor or shields; you must follow a paladin or antipaladin code as appropriate for the spirit’s deity; you may not deliberately speak any lies, including bluffing, exaggerating, stating half-truths with intent to deceive, lies by omission, and so on, and if you know the answer to a question that someone asks you, you must give the answer.
Divine Surge (Lesser, Su): This power functions as the archmage arcana spirit power, except that you add spells from the cleric/oracle list instead of the sorcerer/wizard list (these spells count as divine), and you need a divine focus if the spell requires one.

It is actually Chaplain Noah's increased insight that helps your tinkering as an aegis ....

    1) By simply reversing the mechanical direction of that which allows for the Pull function, Björn is able to set up a method by which he can push away opponents he strikes with a successful attack.
Unlocked - Push (1 pt): He gains the ability to push creatures away with a successful attack. Whenever he makes a successful melee attack, he can attempt a free combat maneuver check. If successful, the target of the attack is pushed 5 feet directly away from the aegis. This ability only works on creatures of a size equal to or smaller than himself. Creatures pushed in this way do not provoke attacks of opportunity. If there is insufficient room for the target to be pushed away, the attempt automatically fails.

    2) By designing ananechoic coating and internal baffling, Björn discovers how to protect himself against sonic-based attacks. He also takes Sonic as his active energy type for the day.
Unlocked - Energy Resistance [Sonic] (1 pt): He already has developed Energy Resistance [cold] and Energy Resistance [electricity]. By taking this customization, as normal, he gains energy resistance 5 against his active energy type. This customization can be selected multiple times. Each time beyond the first, he selects an energy type (cold, electricity, fire, or sonic) to gain resistance to, in addition to his active energy type. If his active energy type is the same as one he has selected, the effects do not stack.

    3) He simply includes thermal resistance and general fire-proofing to his suit as well.
Unlocked - Energy Resistance [Fire] (1 pt): See above. Björn has now fully unlocked all forms of energy resistance available for customization - cold, electricity, fire, and/ or sonic.

4-5) At long last, Björn meditates to discover an as-yet unused portion of his mental power that he can now access for use. He learns his suit can envelop a held weapon to allow it to act with a strange resonance to be sharper, and then "charge" it with his hidden mental store to do a particularly grievous blow!

Unlocked - Crstyallized Weaponry (2 pt): His suit envelopes his melee weapon. The weapon is treated as if made from deep crystal. This treats the weapon as a masterwork weapon if it was not already, and he can pay two PP (power points) to charge the weapon with psionic energy which deals 2d6 additional points of damage on its next hit. The weapon stays charged for 1 minute or until it successfully hits, whichever comes first.
Later in the day, since you again are not in battle of any kind, you use your Reconfigure ability as an aegis. You drop the Push ability and find a way to use the insulators from before and some additional joint articulation to make your suit quite comfortable.

    6) Unlocked - Flexible Suit (1 pt): Your armor check penalty is reduced by 1 (to a minimum of 0). You may also sleep in your suit without becoming fatigued!.

In the morning, Akbar sequester himself as best as he can in arcane meditation. Lord Hanley talks with the "little people" (an ironic term). Zoo takes out a history book from the library. Jean will work to teach some of the concentration exercises Akbar had been teaching him. Haru will take stealthy forays about the library, admissions hall, and up the western passageway to scout for trouble; he was tired of sitting in one spot.

In the afternoon, Haru reads a physics text in the library with Zoo as his escort, who in turn reads more entertaining fare. In the chapel, Lord Hanley will have finished socializing and will have quiet reflection. Winter works on something she has been writing. In the sick room, Jean and Gaye practice some mental resistance exercises they had been learning from Dorn (who no longer is with either of them).

In the evening, after the meal, Gaye goes to bed early in the sick room after being looked at by Winter (who also checked on Javert, and did preventive treatment with Jean). Winter had cast lesser restoration on Gaye to help her body recover faster. Out in the hallway, Zoo will work with Haru on mental resistance techniques.

The party beds down - Jean, Javert, and Gaye in the sickroom; Haru back on guard outside the door with Zoo on a mat sleeping near him; and Akbar, Lord Hanley, and everyone's favorite irascible northman in the chapel.

    Day 16

The next day, both Gaye and Javert have done a fine job fighting disease (obviously, it was Winter's ministrations that really helped). Gaye healed her stiffness overnight and is fighting the ghoul fever so that it hasn't progressed. Javert is still bedridden and in bad shape, but the filth fever seems to have been halted. Tomorrow will tell for both of them if they are healed or must keep fighting. For his part, whether sheer force of will, health of body, or Winter's preventative treatments, Jean's close contact with Javert has not resulted in zoonosis of his companion's illness.

Unfortunately, there are other issues to be had. Those that slept in the chapel are fine (Akbar, Björn, Lord Hanley, etc.). Haru doesn't sleep. Zoo, Jean, Javert, and Gaye are not so lucky, as they continue to have interesting dreams...

Jean passed his Will save. Zoo needs to roll a Will save as well, please ...

Jean, Javert (yes, even the bird), Gaye, and Zoo all have disturbing dreams again. They are all disturbed by them, but not shaken as they may (or may not) have been by them before. Still, the dreams themselves may simply be random "noise" or something to look into. It really depends on how your PCs treat dreams.
    Spoiler: Jean, Gaye, Zoo
    Show
The PC finds himself back in the same endless, alien city as in his original nightmare flight from the Tatterman. The scene plays out much as that dream did, but when the mists pull back to reveal the gaunt monster, it seems surprised to see the character. It ***** its head and floats forward. The dream ends just as the monster is reaching out to caress that character’s face.

    Spoiler: Javert >>> Jean
    Show
"I dreamed of a woman. She was beautiful with blonde hair, pure white eyes, and radiant golden lips. She had gray skin, but not the gray of death, yet of ash. She wore a fancy gown of white and purple trimmed with gold. She had strange sigils on her arm. And she was concentating on a space in front of her. At first, I thought it was an object, but then I realized it was no object at all, but the complete absence of matter and light. She controlled this thing with sheer willpower but using gestures as well, and it is as if her gray skin were cracking and peeling and falling into the blackness. Meanwhile, wherever she went, she took this black pool - something about half my size - and used it to completely destroy everything around her. Everything that touched this blackness disappeared as it was completely disccorporated, and it took every ounce of her mental mastery not to be consumed by it herself.

"I have no idea why I dreamed this, because I felt like a complete outside observer rather than being involved in the dream."

Winter does he check of the sick, and throughout the day will be in to bring them their food and tend to them as needed.

Björn, with another day of no progress in adventuring, you at least can do more spirit-searching and tinkering. Chaplain Noah - a Gorumite - was an interesting choice, but probably the least helpful for a medium like yourself unless you were to have particular need of what he - or other hierophant spirits like him should you ever get out of here - can offer. You look for other spirits to contact that are not priestly or aggressive in war. You do find a distant spirit - a warrior spirit - but different from the Sheriff or the unnamed serpentfolk general from aeons ago. This spirit - the first female you've contacted - was named Fuldam of the Firs - a Kellid chieftain who protected her tribe from numerous incursions of hostile, civilized folk, giants, and hobgoblins. Though you get the strength she was powerful in battle, the real value she had for herself and for her tribe was her ability to physically guard and protect, rather than smash and destroy.
    Spoiler: Guardian Spirit
    Show
Guardian:A guardian spirit is an exemplar of protection and defense. Spirit Bonus: When you channel a guardian, your spirit bonus applies to AC and on Constitution checks, Fortitude saves, and Reflex saves.
Seance Boon: You gain a +1 bonus to CMD.
Favored Locations: City walls, forts, gates, keeps.
Influence Penalty: You are incredibly cautious and guarded in all things, and your caution sometimes gets in the way. When attacking, you always fight defensively, and when casting a spell, you always cast defensively. Because of your focus on defense, you take a penalty on damage rolls equal to your spirit bonus.
Taboos: Choose one: you must always protect others from danger when you can (including defeated enemies, but not enemies that are an active threat to you and others); you must keep your body in fit physical condition, and you break this taboo every time you drop below half your maximum hit points; you must speak no words and use no abilities with the sonic descriptor, and you break this taboo if you become enraged, frightened, or panicked.
Guardian’s Shield (Lesser, Su): You gain proficiency in heavy armors and shields (including tower shields).

Then, you do a full system tear-down of the base systems of your suit to do more tinkering ...
    Spoiler: Björn
    Show
    1) Utilizing that new mental energy you found, but don't understand, you found a way to create background reinforcing harmonics with that energy into your suit so that you could better tap into the metaphysical energy in objects wielded that you might otherwise have a hard time understanding.
Unlock - Unlock Psionics (2 pt): The suit is able to emit energy that resonates with psionic items, helping the aegis use them. The aegis gains a +2 bonus to Use Magic Device checks while wearing his astral suit.

    2) You are able to add a lot of mass and reinforcement to the suit itself so as to create what is almost more of an exoskeleton than a proper suit, allowing you to more greatly leverage your power in a variety of ways. You theorize you could even use this aspect to wield giant-sized weapons!
Unlock - Powerful Build (2 pt): He gains the powerful build trait while wearing his astral suit. Whenever the aegis is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for a Combat Maneuver Bonus or Combat Maneuver Defense (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the aegis is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. The aegis is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as grab or swallow whole) can affect him. The aegis can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

These two customizations are quit costly, so you end up putting Flexible Suit back on (from yesterday) so you can sleep in your suit should trouble arise.

Then, of course, you use the Reconfigure ability and then take off Unlock Psionics.

    3) This time, you check on total reformations of your suit - your "skin" form and the lighter form. You already have the Fortification ability that is applicable automatically to the juggernaut armor you always wear, but you ask yourself if it is possible to do that in the other form. Sure enough, you use the concepts of vital protection and find that you can apply the following now to all forms of your special suit.
Unlock - Fortification (2 pt): He gains 25% chance to negate critical hits or sneak attacks (so damage is rolled normally instead). This does not stack with armor with the same special ability.

In the morning, Akbar meditates while Lord Hanley will be talking with Winter ... something about "martial disciplines" or the like. While Haru could've added insight to that conversation, he is giving Zoo a primer on basic theology and a sense of who the "20 Gods of the Inner Sea" are, as per the various shrines in the chapel and with reference to books in the library that have drawings. In the sickroom, Gaye has drawn a rough outline of a body on the wall, and is doing all manner of targeting exercises and point control work with her rapier while Jean works on dark focus meditative weapon drills.

In the library, Winter is in prayer while Lord Hanley and Akbar will conduct "psychic meditation" in the afternoon. Haru will commune with spirits in the library while Zoo goes through cookbooks. In the sickroom, Gaye continues to do targeting pointwork. Jean has switched from aggressive combat training to shadow-fencing and focusing on defense.

After the evening meal and Winter has ordered a physically tired Gaye to bed, but not before they talk shop. The women talk about the lore of life and death, general healing techniques, and creative treatments. Jean works on avoidance training exercises he had been learning from Dorn before the "Switch." In the hallway, Björn comes out to keep his other two friends company, with Haru and he having a rousing discussion on spell mechanics, and what had Jean taught them both previously.
    Spoiler: Haru, Björn
    Show
Jean is definitely the most knowledgeable on spell mechanics, spell theory, and types of castings and manifestations. Haru is a little behind, but enough to note Jean as the definite expert. Björn has given to as much focus as Haru, but just doesn't come close to his brilliance, so he seems to be farther behind Haru in Spellcraft than Haru is from Jean.
Bored of that discussion, Zoo goes to the side and practices his shifting. Lord Hanley goes to the library for the evening, with Akbar as his escort, before the two of them return, collect Björn, and go back to the chapel to retire for the night.

    Dreaming in Briarstone ...

As can be expected from not sleeping in the protected chapel, those sleeping outside deal with dreams (Gaye, Jean, Javert, & Zoo).
Spoiler: Gaye, Who Will Share Her Dream with Jean & Winter the Next Morning
    Show
The dream begins as a scene in now-familiar deserted alleys, with Gaye wandering an endless, alien city pursued by mists. Soon, a wall collapses, revealing a disproportionately small room. Inside, an ancient Keleshyte woman sits on a stool at a simple table. She looks up at Gaye and says, “Beware the yellow walkers.” The dream ends immediately after.
When Gaye wakes up, she seems haggard and unrested, and her her dreams - either feverish because of the ghoul fever, or the ghoul fever relapse because of the dreams - seems to do no good for her as she is now under the pall of ghoul fever again for 3 DEX + 1 CON damage. Though dhampir are reputed to be good at resisting disease, it is likely that this disease - caused by undead - makes her more susceptible because of her sire.
    Spoiler: Jean, Javert
    Show
You have the same dream as last night regarding the Tatterman. Javert barely kept from letting the dream overcome him.
Javert has finally healed from the filth fever! Not only has the fever broken, but with all of Winter's care, Jean's nursing, and complete rest, he no longer shows any signs of illness. When Winter comes in, she gives him the all clear. She likewise gives Jean a clean bill of health as well.
    Spoiler: Zoo
    Show
Zoo wanders in an endless cloud of yellow vapor. Other shapes form and vanish in the mist, fleeting, unsettling things that refuse to be focused upon. After what seems like a lifetime, an exhausted-looking man with a ponytail of straight, white hair stumbles through the fog. He’s insane with desperation. He tries to pass Zoo by, but as Zoo barks at him he gapes and shouts, “We’re all lost here! We’ll never escape!” before rushing away. His ranting, “What have I done? What have I done?” follows him as the dream ends.

With Gaye as the only sick member of the group, what is the plan?

Time spent twiddling thumbs is not necessarily time spent idle, especially for Jean. While he waited for Javert to recover, he spent some hours pondering the nature of their dreams, shared and separate, and the world they now live in. "Perhaps," he thought, conversing with Javert, "the woman in your dreams is this 'Briarstone Witch', or perhaps even Pharasma herself. I find the former more likely, though her form does not match what I know of these 'Kellids'. Still, I agree with past suppositions - half-dream, half-reality we are in and it will end when these strange mist-spewing creatures are dead. I hope."

To that end, he turns to the others. "Javert is hale, as is myself. I would not leave Gale without guard, but my own reasons for staying still are satisfied. The sooner we put an end to the creature Zandalus protects, the sooner I believe we can leave this place. I propose we begin to move, if not today then soon."

The day and night guard to the chapel proper see the entrance to the room, and the barricade guards have direct line of sight to the sick room door, though not the hallway to the Admissions Hall (which the first guard has). She should be fine. Nothing has approached the chapel for days beyond ourselves."

Björn looks at Hanley with suspicion... ”Why are you suddenly so anxious to rush headlong into this... Are we at our full strength? I say we wait until we are sure... this could be our doom... and you keep pushing, pushing pushing... what’s wrong with waiting until we’re all in our best health. Hmmm? Unless you have something to gain from our demise... is that it? I say we wait until the group is at full strength again...”

Lord Hanley simply raises arm and looks to Jean and says, "And that, my good man, is the power of reverse psychology in action." Looking back to Björn, "Okay, you convinced me. We stay."

    Day 17

The morning has Javert and Jean working martial maneuvers in tandem. Akbar is in psychic meditation.

Björn conducts his seance, happily gaining the champion again - the most natural fit (and there were no other spirit types to gain). Again, with the knowledge of not needing to adventure today, he breaks his suit down to parade rest to experiment with...
    Spoiler: Björn
    Show
    1) The first major addition is a series of grips and tiny spikes on his juggernaut form that allow him to climb. He does realize that the bulk of his armor still affects him, so it is not as good as it seems. However, when he "gears down" to the armor's skin form, he has less in the way of spikes and hard grabbers and more micro-adhesive properties.
Unlocked - Climb (2 cp): He gains a Climb speed equal to his base land speed (15').
Caveat: The speed is reduced to 10' in the normal armor form and with the juggernaut form (the one you normally wear). While you have a "climb speed" and get a +8 bonus to Climb checks, and can Take 10 at any time, you still suffer ACP. You still must use 2 hands to climb - so you can't use a shield or carry a weapon. The end result - until you put ranks in the Climb skill - is that unless you are in the astral skin form you really can't do much in climbing anything other than really basic things without a roll.

    2)
Because attempting to use the Climb function practically requires Björn to use a form other than the juggernaut form. One of the worries in these "lesser" forms is survivability, but Björn is finally able to figure a way to transfer the survivability that is part and parcel of the juggernaut form and work it into lesser forms.

Unlocked - Hardy (2 cp): You get this already as a free customization whenever you choose "astral juggernaut" form (which is your default). Now, you can apply it to your other two astral forms as well (astral skin, astral armor). This customization provides a +2 enhancement bonus to Constitution while wearing the suit.

    3) Reconfigure ... Björn is able to create a series of liquid-shifting chambers in the articulated joints to help his weapons create crushing blows.
Unlocked - Improved Damage (2 cp): His melee attacks deal additional damage. If wielding a two-handed weapon, he deals 3 additional points of damage on a successful hit. If wielding a one-handed weapon, he deals 2 additional points of damage on a successful hit. If wielding a light weapon, he deals 1 additional point of damage on a successful hit. If dual-wielding, each weapon is affected separately.
This work takes him all day.

Haru and Lord Hanley go to the library. Though Haru is into more generalized reading, he finds himself in all manner of invigorating discussions with Lord Hanely.
    Spoiler: Haru
    Show
Lord Hanley either equals - or possibly just exceeds - Haru's own fantastic intellect! This was likely very unexpected.

Zoo spends time with Winter, who goes over more about how to focus his being into his own spells.
    Spoiler: Zoo
    Show
Though she was more powerful when you first met her, to your surprise - and her own - it seems now that the relative strength of your magics are now about equal.

In the afternoon, Jean shifts from combat work together to focusing on increasing Javert's health through a variety of calisthenics he thinks of. The sorrow he felt at the near-loss of his avian friend has him worrying how he can help Javert get stronger and more resistant to the more subtle terrors of the world.

Haru looks through some books on engineering in the library. It would be limited to a professional, but Haru finds it "entertaining" given his limited training. Lord Hanley tutors Zoo on matters of basic theology, using library books to assist him. Björn will notice Akbar working on gross motor skills.

In the evening, after dinnertime .... Winter will tutor the group with various spell focusing exercises, sans Björn, who doesn't consider himself much of a spellcaster. Lor Hanley sits to the side and writes notes for his own purposes. As far as Björn, he does the same full-body avoidance exercises he saw Akbar doing earlier.

    Day 18

Yesterday, Winter had to re-pray to re-allocate an additional lesser restoration to keep Gaye at maximum form, despite having ghoul fever. Today, Winter says that while the fever has not fully broken, nor is Gaye hindered. She could feasibly adventure today, as long as she made it back so Winter could continue to monitor her progress. Having ghoul fever, she is not contagious. She would have to die of the fever to be contagious. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

So, assuming you are going to make your major strike today I need to know the following ...

Björn: I assume you will perform a seance with all party members (sans Javert) for the Champion?
    * What customizations will you put on your armor? Astral juggernaut, no doubt? If you chose speed (x2) originally so as not to be the "slow guy" in the party, be advised that Jean moves at 20' (because of his armor). Stalwart has served you well in this mind-bending place. You have 5 customization points. How will you set up your armor?

    Jean
: Do you set up your maneuvers differently? How do you set up your mental focus? Same or different?

Winter gives a (non-spell) blessing to the party before you head out, hoping that Pharasma has yet to see you, but if She does, that you are fairly commended.

The group takes the northern to northwest route to the Apostle's Camp. As usual, the apostles and survivors are twitchy, but Wren gathers you into his little makeshift hospital. Remember, he has semi-conscious patients in this room, so normal-level conversation plans on whatever is a bad idea.

So, you are at the "hospital" at the encampment. Now what?

"Whisper," hisses Wren. "No. But you'll want to go up the southern set of stairs first, where the guardroom is. If you try to go up the northern set of stairs to go right for Ulver, you'll deal with his oneirogens and his guards when they respond, where it's likely Ulver & Co. will not respond to a battle with the guards."
