Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Alright, I feel like making a webcomic again, and although I feel my OotS style ABR comics have attained a non-ugly level, I would prefere it not to be in that style as there are already way to many comics like that on this forum (al great though, I think they are fantastic and my art is far worse than Salmon's or Saturn's, but you understand my point) I already have a story so I only need to decide on the art style right now.
I am still experimenting, but I would like to know what you, my might-be future readers, think of the style. The first part of the story will mainly focus around a fox, a snake and a human (with a horse).

A certainly curious idea there Ich

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Well that first style is different to say the least. Using minimalist lines to show the characters is an interesting concept.
I think the snake and the horse work well, but not so sure about the fox or the human, the fox is very lizard-like, and the human looks as if he's holding two mini-lances, though I know they're arms really.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Yes, I agree. If I do decide to take this style I will make the fox more vulpine with maybe making the head higher or adding ears or something. I will also make the arms of the human less straight. Now, in a few hours (read: maybe even tomorrow) I hope to post one of the other styles.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Alright, this is style 2,
Personally, I am not too happy about this one. I was inspired by Wayang, but personally I think it looks to much like it and it limits the story and theme way to much, but I still feel like posting it here.

Yes, I think I am indeed going for something more like style #1, I would like to have some critic on that one, things how I could improve it and I would also like to hear if people like it as it is hard to see if your own work sucks.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
I like the first style. The fox might not be very vulpine-looking, but I don't think that really matters. It's cute anyway.
The human might need some more work. I suggest changing the shape of the head. Maybe add feet (though you should try to make them not too OoTSy).
What are you planning to use for background and text? Balloons, or more like your Opening, with free floating text? I personally think that the way you make the background and speech is at least as important for the webcomic's style as its art is.
Edit: ears for the fox and horse may be a good idea.Last edited by Simius; 2007-12-07 at 01:09 PM.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
I don't think the style works very well for a comic... I think you could make it work for T-shirt designs though.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Yeah, I think you'd do well with ears on the fox, maybe a jagged tail to make it look bushy?
I must admit I don't like the second style, the 1st one's good I think, and much less restrictive, as you've said yourself.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
I'm going to have to agree with Ava here. It's a very interesting minimalist style that I would like to see developed further, but I just don't think it will work for a webcomic. It's just not definitive enough for a webcomic, in my opinion. The characters aren't solid, so they won't stand out enough against a background, and they don't really have enough determining physical characteristics to set them apart. They are, however, very cool as artwork alone.
It's possible (perhaps probable :P) that I'm wrong. I can't really judge until I see a sample of what you would be doing/what the comic would look like.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Maybe the background is also some lines, a line for the ground, some trees, a weapon or two and you got a webcomic.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
That could work, but it seems like there would be too much white space left over that way. Shrug.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
I agree with you. Sneak. Although it is a nice drawing it isn't a great style for a web comic. I have story, but not style. This is quite ennoying.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
No, the style would fit for a webcomic, but probably not for the sort of comic you've got in mind. I could easily imagine that style used in a more philosophical comic, with more dialogues and less action, rending background unnecessary.
I like it, though...I think I might devote some time on that style and see what I can make with it...- When danger reared it's ugly head, it bravely turned it's tail and fled.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
I understand what kind of comic you mean, my last comic, Opening, was a bit like that. I would have no problem with that, if I would now want a more action involved comic.
Please have a go with it, if you like.

Re: Inconsistency-yet to be created webcomic
Just keep experimenting and eventually you'll come up with someone that looks freaking awesome and is uniquely yours.
So, hey, you could have a webcomic by the time you're 90! :P
I'm not sure I would give up on the style you have already, though, unless you're really unhappy with it. Just try experimenting and tweaking styles you've already worked with. Although I wouldn't necessarily take advice from me as a webcomic artist, as I stopped after 80 comics/around half a year, my art (which worked for me) was basically just a tweaked style of OOTS that I had already developed (example).
Really, the big thing is to make sure that you're happy and comfortable with it and can do all the things you want to do in your comic using that style. If you come up with a style that looks good but you're not completely comfortably using it, chances are you can come up with a better art style.
