Lydia Morrison, of the Hope Killer - The Hallowed Chamber

Lydia's senses were telling her very bad things about her body. The cold steel in her fingers seems instead to feel like nothing. Looking down at her hand, Lydia moves her fingers in a bored, table-rapping motion. The clanging on the metal as her fingertips hit it reassure her that she can still move her fingers, but the utter lack of feeling as the clanging resounds through the air around her chills her to the bone. She feels the shivers crawling through her. Despite the bandage that Matthias was now wrapping around her head, Lydia still wasn't feeling any better. Despite knowing that bleeding wounds aren't helped by motion, Lydia attempts to push herself up to a standing position, but fails and instead ends up lying down on the ground, spread-eagle style.

The beeping near Wyndell makes Lydia think of that one time she'd played that video game. What was it? Pac-Man? She laughed in a strange, little-girl's voice, one she hadn't heard in a while. A sane part of her mind scolded her, but it was to no avail. Her thoughts drifted back to a time when her parents loved her, when she had nothing in the world to fear.

"Look at this one, Lydia! Isn't it just beautiful?"

    "Pretty..."

"It would look great on you, don't you think?"

    Lydia smiled. "Yup!"

Her glasses reflected the dim light of the store as her mother walked her inside. Mommy is always so nice, Lydia thought. Mommy loves me, always!

Turning back to her little one, Lydia's mother put the hat right on her head. It was a bit lopsided, but Lydia felt happy just to be wearing it.

    "Aw, isn't that just perfect?"

The clerk nodded. "How adorable! What a fine little girl you've got there!"

Lydia smiled big and wide, and blushed, noticeably. So nice. Everyone's so nice.

Lydia felt a hand touch her face. She could feel the cold behind it. Part of her mind was yelling at her memory, telling it to fade into the nothing it should have been. That hat was worthless. That life was nothing. Her mother...her own mother didn't even realize anything was wrong with her until it was too late. None of them meant anything to her now. But her mind was too addled. The sane part took a small backseat for a moment, as Lydia responded to the touch on her face. "Mommy..." she whispered, low enough so that few could hear her.

A girl working on some sort of.... implants.

Caroline- Repository for the Long Night

"Serviceable," Caroline answered, standing in one place to keep from falling. "The label on the box, by the way, was a warning. In future, consult me before you do anything like that, please." It wasn't his fault; he couldn't read them, and she'd been too distracted to read the sign in time to tell him to stop. She would have to pay more attention from now on; it was dangerous to allow the others to stumble about like this.

She felt input from another source, in the part of her consciousness monitoring the computer. Wyndell (she assumed) was responding. She took a moment to decide what to say before entering it into the computer, the words appearing all at once rather than letter by letter.

THIS IS CAROLINE. THE OTHER TWO ARE FUNCTIONAL. WHERE ARE YOU? _

She thought that was right; her vision had not yet returned, but both Misty and the other one (he was called Janks, she recalled after briefly combing her memories from the Hope Killer) had spoken. She still couldn't see what had happened to them; there had been screams, and both of them sounded shaken, but they were speaking coherently again.

"Is the door closed?" she asked, realizing that her vision might not return until whatever had been inside was well and truly sealed away from them. "Seal it if it isn't. Don't look inside again." She couldn't help but wonder what the specimen was, and why it was to be loaded aboard the Ark. Given the spheres' reticience to speak of the scourge, it didn't seem likely she would find out from them, and all that was important to know now was what the effects had been. A specimen of... whatever scourge was described? Why would they want that with them? For study? The containment unit was labelled temporal stasis unit; an advance in cryo-stasis technology, I wonder? Or was the crate somehow... preserving it, preventing any time from elapsing while it was sealed? On the surface, it seemed impossible, though Caroline was no theoretical physicist, but three thousand years was a long time. Long enough for humanity to build an empire, fall into barbarism, and rise again to reach the stars. The limits of the impossible could always be pushed back.

Caroline felt an odd stirring of pride for her race, for that. Unusual; the flaws in mankind, their irrational and instinct-driven tendencies, were usually all too clear to her. As one of the few who was mostly free from the cloud of emotion that tinged the decisions of almost every human, Caroline had seen it as her duty to compensate for human error. To try to bring it to an end, eventually. She knew all too well that a complex computer system had to be known inside and out, every bit of code examined, before it could even imitate sentience. To think that the organic brain—much like a computer, though far more complex—had been made with nothing but simple, immediate practicality to pluck out the flaws and refine the better traits... no, it was only logical that she saw herself as more than human. She was not entirely free of her instincts, but the mechanical part of her could analyze them, so that she knew when they were influencing her, and compensate. She had taken the responsibility of trying to moderate and remove the influence of their outdated, animalistic instincts, in as broad a scale as she could manage, and it was no surprise that she thought of those instincts most often, when she thought of humanity.

But to think that, despite this handicap, they had made it off their planet, spread far across the galaxy from what the spheres hinted, and managed to create thought independent of themselves... that was something to be proud of. For all their weaknesses, they would not give up.

Her voice was moderately gentler than usual as she went on. "What happened? I couldn't see. Are the both of you all right?"

Seeing Lydia on the ground, Giovanni moved towards her, but the strange man he had brought with him beat him there. As Matthias and Thoft worked on her, Giovanni turned to Wyndall. Wyndall, I know head wounds bleed alot, but that is a horrific amount of blood. Any idea how bad it is? He asks. Damn, we can't lose any more people Giovanni thinks, looking around and noticing there were only 4 people around currently functional What the hell did I do to deserve this? Yea, I blew up buildings, yes, i have blood on my hands, but in a war, who doesn't? Why aren't the others here? Why us? Giovanni wonders, though not for long. Figuring out the universe was never his forte. Instead, he goes back to focusing on the now. As he glances down while speaking to Wyndall, he notices the characters on the screen. Hey, alright! They're alive at least. See if they know where the heck they are so we can meet up.

Sensing another man's presence approaching, Matthias looks up, the name Giovanni already on his tongue. But it was not Giovanni but rather some other man, undoubtedly one of the ship's passengers. Someone who had been frozen in the ship's cryo-pods perhaps, or a more recent addition to this ship, a maintenance man charged with keeping the ship ready for use? Regardless, he looked strong and didn't make any particularly threatening moves as he approached, although his manner was quite odd.

His behavior with Lydia was quite unusual, as it suggested a familiarity that should not exist. But there was no time for introductions or pleasantries, only action if Lydia's life was to be saved. He had slowed the blood but not stopped it, and things would likely become quite bad indeed in a couple minutes if she wasn't gotten to a medical bay.

Reaching down to slide an arm underneath lydia's right and around her back, Matthias turns to address the newcomer.

"This woman requires the use of your ship's medical bay, immediately. Do you know if it is stocked at present? And can you help me carry her there, mister . . . ?"

Not waiting for a reply from the man, Matthias turns to address Lydia.

"Ok Lydia, we're goign to have to move you. We're going to get you to the medical bay to finish patching up that head wound. If you can walk that would be a help, but if not this man's from the ship and he'll help me carry you there.

Slowly Matthias attempts to pull Lydia to her feet, holding her close to him and taking as much of her own weight as he could. Looking over his shoulder at Wyndell, who was now pecking at the keyboard of his computer with a dazed expression, Matthias shouted, "WYNDELL! Come on, we're leaving here and boarding the ship! You don't want to get left behind do you!?"
I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

It is said that when one losses a sense all the others become more acute as a means of compensation. Empirical evidence seems to support this for the screams of your companions echoes within your mind. Other than then mental ordering you around the spheres are silent, and a part of you feels like something is drawing away from you, focusing on something far away with their full attention.

The screams then end and conversation starts to resume, yet your eyes do not start communicating you’re your brain, leaving you in a perpetual black haze. Then you get the sense of communication, and while you don’t properly “see” letters you get the impression that the following is visible to you:

Sending the reply you get the sense that it made it through. Shifting your focus around you mentally ask if the door is closed and thinking to the spheres, your feel a faint tendril, and then something akin to a slap in your mental face occurs.

Their movements are stiff and rigid, as if they are not used to movement. Clad in blue uniforms that you recognize finally as being from your era as standard uniforms on ships of the explorers guild. They stare straight ahead, which is even more strange for as they get closer you can see that instead of eyes there are only two bloody holes, still freshly bleeding. And yet they do not seem concerned by the lack of eyes as they walk with a purpose down the ramps towards your group.

Stopping at the entrance the two of them shoulder-to-shoulder, blocking access to the ramp they open their mouths, which until this point had been tightly shut. Bits of teeth and flesh emerge as they exhale, as if they were clenching their teeth so hard they broke and they has also bitten through their own lips and tongues. Their hands are clenched into fists so tightly that it seems their fingers are digging into the palms, with drops of blood emerging. For several seconds a standstill occurs then they speak as one with the exact same tone and timing, their voices blending into one.

Stopping at the end of the ramp, their jaws twitch as one and open, with blood, bits of flesh and broken edges of teeth emerging to fall on the ground. For several seconds a standstill occurs then they speak as one with the exact same tone and timing, their voices blending into one.

Quickly running back to the control panel you are easily able to have BUZI release the prisoner. As you make your way back you notice that both Ezekil and Shad are within the chamber, and don’t appear to be doing any moving anytime soon.

Emerging back into the area where everyone else is you see that BUZI has indeed released the prisoner. For the most part you follow along with the others outside of the ship, staying out of the way.

As it becomes fairly obvious that in order to treat the one wounded person that the medical facilities onboard your ship would be needed, you hear the sounds of footsteps along the ramp.

Coming down the ramp are the forms of Ezekil and Shad. Their movements seem strange, really stiff and awkward, as if they are not properly used to their own bodies. Then you notice their eyes, or more rather hollowed pits still bleeding that used to be their eyes. Their hands are curled into fists so tightly that their fingers have dug into the palms of their hands, with blood dripping from the wounds as well.

It has been many moons since the last time you were at the village, yet across your shoulders are the fruits of your labor. Other tribesmen quickly relieve you of your burden of fresh meat and rush it to be properly skinned and prepared for a feast while you watch them. Moving about oblivious to how things should be you blend in with them for a time, overhearing conversations about how the gods have finally arrived and they will all be saved. You too had seen the falling star, and your memories trace back to a time many seasons ago.

When you were much younger, fleeing from yet another village, you watched a falling star rip through the heavens and crash. Curious you approached it and found a metallic cylinder with heat radiating from it. After a time it cooled and you were able to examine it, poking with a stick and even hitting a few times, eventually moving to trying to open it up. The moment your hand touched it, a seam appeared and it opened up, revealing within it objects that you recognized as devices from the gods, not worthy of your humble touch.

And yet with your touch the object had opened, and part of it was blinking and making noises, using a few words you recognized once again from the Chiefs using with Brother Human. Picking up the device, it fit into the palm of your hand. It continued to cycle through the words, and images started appearing. It takes time but eventually you match the images with the words, and slowly start to pick up on the language of the gods.

Over the course of moon cycles you work with the device, and find as you learn more about the tongue that it speaks in, the more it offers. It shows images of distant globes, of great objects of sacred metal floating in a void, entire villages made of wood and metal populated by more people that you have ever seen in one place before, all of them looking like you.

Shaking your head from the memory you have managed to make your way to the outer tents of the village. Entering one of them you see that the other three people who are like you in this village, curious about what happens and suspicious of the teachings that everyone else accepts without a trace of hesitation. They are sitting around a slowly dying fire within the tent, looking as if they have been in conversation when you arrived.

”About time Saul, things are moving quickly.” speaks Frolin, far older than you. His half-blind eyes focus upon you the moment you slip into the tent as he strokes his long beard. ”The newcomers are in the cave of Brother Human, who has passed from this world. It is dangerous, for the Chief feels that this is a sign that it is time to make everyone pure.”

”He always go on about that, yet there has been more questions raised. The Chief hails these newcomers as gods, yet they arrived wounded and tired.” That would be Amiene, a small wisp of a girl whom you found one day asking very direct questions to the Chief, and were able to save catch her and explain her behavior away due her having gotten into a bottle of Fellip Nector. ”And I saw them, and they looked confused.”

Sitting near the entrance is Inine, a wanderer like you who is slowly recovering from a bout of the cough sickness. ”Who knows what they are, but I know what is going to happen. Like you said Frolin, the Chief is taking this as a sign and the priests and hunters will do whatever they can to make sure they are pure. We need to escape, find another tribe.”

”Or we can ask the newcomers for help, after all we are simply human like they are if the magical box you have Saul speak the truth. Ow….”

A look of confusion wanders across Amiene small girlish face and she looks down. Sticking out of her stomach is a barbed arrow, dripping with her blood. Her hand wanders towards it and pokes it gently, opening up another cut on her finger.

          ”Oh…..”

From the outside you hear a rustle of noise and throw yourself to the ground as several arrows rip through the walls of the tent, missing you thankfully. Inine screams out as one drives into his leg and he starts to crawl towards his own bow and quiver. Frolin picks himself up and stumbles towards Amiene when another wave of arrows fly through the tent. Falling back he reaches up and tries to grab the one sticking through his long beard and deep into his throat, not noticing the others. His half-blind eyes glaze over and he falls to the ground limp as Amiene screams out in terror.

The flaps to the tent rustle and a tribesman enters only to go stumbling back from a arrow to his heart from Inine, who has managed to grab his bow, the ground below him darkening with his lifeblood. He turns towards you with a glean in his eye.

”Saul! Run! Let the newcomers know, warn them! If they are not gods, the Chief will……”

His words are cut off as a long knife emerges from his chest. Gasping he falls backwards against the tent wall, hitting something hard and knocking things over on the other side of the tent.

Even through the tent you can notice that the sky is brightening. Your thoughts flash back towards the falling stars you have seen.

Blinking your eyes the smell of smoke assaults your nose. Crawling along you see that the tent is partially on fire. Crawling out from under a flap you see that part of the village is in flames. Looking up at the sky you see dozens of falling starts, the Night of Fire has started, a sign that the village needs to be purified. Having lived through this before you know it is time to try to escape.

Looking around you see bodies laying on the ground, several badly wounded from stones, earth and fire being thrown everywhere. Some are obviously dead, others are unconscious and a few are in a daze and might be a threat to you if they are not taken care of. The village is in a scene of barely controlled panic as tribespeople run about trying to put out the worst of the fires. It will be a simple matter to make your way out when the screams of Amiene catch your attention.

You see that she has been dragged out of the burning tent by a tribesman you know as the son of the Chief and the High Priestest. She is still alive despite the arrow protruding from her stomach, though you know that if they dared to attack so openly that her life was running short, and the last bits of it would be beyond painful.

For now you are alone and everyone else is too busy trying to save the village to pay attention to you.

seeing the...things...walking down the ramp, Giovanni has flash backs to the horrific accidents on the hope killer. Back to when he and the others first encountered the zombies, to the several fights with them, to watching Charles be ripped apart, to the stab wounds he is still finishing recovering from. He freezes as his brain goes back to it all, scared beyond belief of the possibilty that they may have been here too. Wyndell, Matthias, please for the love of all thats holy tell me those aren't the same **** that was on our ship. Giovanni says, staring at them. Then, after thinking for a quick second, amends that statement. Actually, you know what? Tell me it IS what was on our ship. We know basically how to kill those bastards, and something knew would just screw us over even more.

Lydia Morrison, of the Hope Killer - The Hallowed Chamber

Despite herself, Lydia's sane mentality begins to fight even harder. The memory fades away just as another beings to rise to the surface. With precious moments of time, Lydia's sanity rejects unconsciousness for as long as possible. I will not die now. I refuse. I refuse to allow it. Damn it, Lydia, stop it. Stop thinking about the past. You're in the present, now.

Then that voice. Someone calling to her, telling her to hang on. Against all her beliefs, against all her sane thoughts, Lydia responds to the voice, only knowing that one person would say those words with such strength and conviction, such...love. "M...Malaki?" She can't help but whisper. Warmth fills her body. Strength returns to her sane side as she pushes back at darkness again. Damn it, I will live. I will not let you die, Lydia. Fight it. Fight it!

Her vision begins to return, despite being very blurry. Others around her seem familiar, yet in her muddled mentality, she can't quite recall their names in perfect enough detail to say them. As the new person begins to appear, Lydia feels a greater warmth. She knows that it is Malaki. She knows that it is he who is helping her survive. Her sanity begins to push even harder, fighting harder against the darkness.

Lydia feels the earth beneath her fall away. Turning her head to the ground, she notices too late that she is no longer holding the shining gray object she held before. Mumbling, she says, "Malaki..." again, clenching her now empty fist and hoping whatever was carrying her away would sense her sorrow. She could only guess it was Malaki himself, but unable to truly focus on reality, Lydia only fought to continue seeing through hazy lenses.

Then Lydia feels the presence. And it haunts her. Something about it seems strange, foreign. And yet something about it seems familiar. Shrouded and hidden, Lydia could not bring her mental vision to notice it. Her struggles to remain conscious prevented her from focusing on it. But the strange being was strong, Lydia could tell that much. Something about it seemed to draw Lydia in, almost making her wish to fail, wish to fall into the steep realm of unconsciousness.

The two sides of her mind struggled against one another. That piece that was intrigued by this new presence, wishing to explore it and understand it, despite what it knew about it. And the other side, not willing to let go of a lover she knew was still there. Both forces fought, though one side was beginning to lose, and Lydia could feel it. The darkness was growing, quickly. She spoke, as loudly as her whisper would go. "H...help..."

Matthias starts to lead Lydia towards the ship, grunting under the strain of supporting her weight as they shuffled forward. He was getting too old for this. Looking to see how far left they had to go, Matthias was at first encouraged, then dismayed at the sight of the two crewman appearing from the ship to bar the way. Why they were still alive or at least not screaming in agony from missing both eyes, Matthias had no idea, but his recent experiences with zombies had given him an open mind towards this sort of thing.

Hearing Giovanni's comments, Matthias shakes his head. "I think we're dealing with something similar, but different. Usually the only talking the zombies did was 'Ragh, brains!' But they're still in our way and we don't have time for this. Lydia doesn't have time for this. I'm willing to bet that if it comes to killing them, crushing the skull will be just as effective as it was on the zombies though."

Turning to the crewman who had come out to help them, Matthias tries to hand Lydia off to him. "Here. You and Wyndell get Lydia to the sick bay and get help from the rest of your crew, assuming they havn't all been reduced to that. If they have, aim for the head, and whatever you do, don't let them bite you!"

Finished with passing off his burden, Matthias nods to Wyndel. "You accompany Lydia to the medical bay, see she gets there safe. Giovanni and I will handle these guys."

Turning back to Giovanni, Matthias whispers in a low voice, "I got the one on the left. You take the one on the right."

Then, turning back to face these . . . things, Matthias strides forwards, angling himself to more directly approach the one on the left. "Hey, you! Ahh . . . No-Eyes! You want my neural clusters? Come and get them! Mano-a-mano! Come on!"

Matthias jabs a finger to point at the one on the left, and then turns his finger over to gesture with it in a "come here" manner. Meanwhile, he balls his other hand into a fast and assumes a loose fighting stance. He hadn't really had much formal trainning in fisticuffs, but he had found on several occassions found a use for it. A few of those fights had been brutal and deadly, which long ago had prompted Matthis into mostly using intimidation to get what he wanted.
I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

Thoft's blinding headache got worse as he looked up to see the two... monstrosities that used to be crewmembers. He didn't catch their names, but that was probably for the best.
What became of them, Thoft could only describe as a mockery of the divine human form. (Someone he knew used those exact words, but he didn't know who, or what context he used it in.) It angered Thoft more than it scared him, and the whispers in his head continued to get louder.
He looked around at his new companions and could feel a sense of horrified familiariity among them.
They spoke with a resignated determination, and Thoft could only feel himself wanting to protect them.
He stood at the edge of the ramp, a bastion against the menace on it.
He felt a connection with the girl "Lydia" that confused him, almost a bond of... love. Was he controlling her feelings? or was she controlling him?
Not that it mattered, he had to protect her. and those around her.
    Especially Odysseus.

He glared at the bloody eye sockets of what used to be his cryo-cohorts. A bloody satire of the innocence of death. but deep down, he could hear them screaming, tortured as if death was not good enough for them. it fueled even more anger into his consciousness.
"Back off." he said, brandishing the shinbone like a baseball bat.
    "Or I'll make you."

Thoft visualized the attack in his head, dismissing his atrophied muscles.
Rushing headlong into the left one, putting his weight behind his left leg before twisting his torso and shattering the cudgel into the face of the right one, after it explodes on his skull, grabbing the right one's collar and pulling it towards him, rolling up and tucking his legs into his chest, kicking out to send the zombie flying off of the ramp. If he were stronger, he would be able to stand. However, this would leave him prone. therefore he would keep the shards of bone for a defense, they can be used as peircing weapons.

Keep the muscles loose, it'll hurt less. he thought as he approached them.

"Odysseus, I'll cover you, take the right." he said, almost out of habit. it felt almost familiar, as if a wave of nastalgia hit him as he said it.

    and then he charged.

    Oscar, Next Generation

Having kept quiet since following Giovanni to the injured girl, as he had little experience in injuries besides knowing how to apply a band-aid, Oscar kept his eyes on the former prisoners from the looks of their jumpsuits. Something had roughed them up before they had even gotten near his ship by the looks of it and he doubted they were the ones who nicked the stuff of the ship so while he was doubtful of their trustworthiness he knew they injured girl didn't have time for his assholish nature. However he didn't have time to introduce himself as the things he used to call comrade came shambling down the ramp,

Sweet Jesus and holy **** what the hell happened to you guys?

When neither of his comrades answered he shouted out to them again with obvious concern in his voice, seemingly not noticing their wounds,

Ezekil, Shad, what the **** is going on guys? Come on answer me damn it!

When Giovanni muttered something about something similar being on their ship, Oscar turns to him obvious rage in his eyes as he saw the state of his fellow crew men,

What the **** was on your ship and what the hell did it do to Ezekil and Shad! I've served with them on the Chasing the Second Star for over two ****ing years now and they managed to make it through whatever the **** killed off our other crew members!

When the older man of the convicts mentioned zombies Oscar's sobs of sorrow for the men he had worked with for so long took on a more histarical (sp?) bent. However his military training began to take over as he got a grip on himself, his mind taking him back to his days in the academy,

The drill instructor paced back in forth of Oscar and the other cocky new cadets, his attitude was like that of every drill instructor portrayed in every movie, rough and mean.

Listen up you whiney ass, pimply faced bastards while the higher ups in the academy may like me to tell you that you'll never get in to close-quarters combat the truth of the matter is that the scum the lot of you will be going up against in the future aren't going to go with traditional combat and there may be an attempt to board the vessel you will be stationed on. And as I am the one who was stuck with training you till you get shipped off to flight school you dumbasses are going to be learning close quarters combat in case such an incident does happen.

And the drill instructor had not lied, the time Oscar spent planetside under the instructors 'tutelage' he had been put through the same ringer that the instructor had given his marine cadets.

Moving forward in time roughly one year, Oscar has spent the better part of the month learning how to pilot one of the newer ships the defense force had commissioned, smaller and more agile then the freighter like vessels he had been trained on one of his 'lucky' streaks had broke on through and Oscar, the instructor and several other students were in the middle of an asteroid field going full throttle. His instructor, a middle aged man who had spent the better part of his days in the bottle too washed up to be a true pilot was white with fright as the calm and collected Oscar moved through the field with little difficulty. He had alwas been an irrational person, one to look for the next bar or tell a joke before doing his work, always in favor of shirking his duties and lying back, but when ever he got behind the controls something changed in him he was calm and collected, he could fly circles around others and knew it but never let it distract him.

Flash forward another two years, the Captain of the Chasing the Second Star was introducing him to his new comrades, and in his mind he saw Ezekil and Shad amongst them. While he hadn't been on great terms with either of them at the beginning, if you serve with the same people for long enough they grow on you. He remembered sharing a couple of beers with the two once when he was they were portside, remembered telling the two how he had gotten kicked out of the academy and found himself working much like his parents, living a life he had tried to avoid and how they opened up to him as well.

Snapping back to the present day Oscar's tears have stopped and though still rather shook up he seems much calmer, he cracks the grin he was known for as he turns to the older man who wanted to go one on one with his barefists against the former Ezekil and Shad,

Not going to happen gramps, you don't have anything but your fists and well I've worked with those two for nearly the entire time I've been the pilot of Chasing the Second Star, and I'm not going to let some old aged convict whose hyped up on adrenaline be the one to kill them. I don't care if what you say is true, even if they're zombies they're still my comrades and it's Thoft's and my problem. You help the girl while we take care of those two.

Out of the corner of his eye he sees Thoft take the lead and charge the two former crew mates before following in his foot steps.

Matthias shoots a look over his shoulder at the second crewman who had appeared from the ship that was *not* missing his eyes. It seemed only now was he grasping the absurdity of their situation. And did he just call Matthias gramps? This guy had no idea how true that was.

Chuckling with just a slight maniacal bent, Matthis cracks a smile at the man. "Alright, sonny. They're all yours. I don't care so long as someone get Lydia to the medical bay now. And it's a very long story in fact. Some three thousand year long story!"

Letting the man mull this new aspect of their situation over, Matthias backpedals away from the zombie-like creatures and turns to race back over to Lydia. Once again helping to support her weight, Matthias waits until the two crewmen have been engaged and drawn away from the ramp, and then moves as quickly as he's able up the ramp, into the ship, and towards the medical bay.
I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

    Saul Umati - Tribal Outcast

Saul smiled amongst all the chaos, a world weary smile completely devoid of humour. So purification was upon the tribe once more, sad, but not surprising. The ‘purification’ purges had been becoming more and more common, the last was but a year or so ago. If only he’d had more time with his only friends before it happened again, that was his only regret. Saul looked up at the falling stars and offered up a silent curse, wishing they had come while he and his friends were well away from here.

    “Damn you Gaia.”

Saul pulled the bow from his back and held a single arrow loosely next to the string, in case of the tribesmen noticing him. Volen was right, he needed to get to the outlanders, find safety amongst them if he could. He may even be able to help them, the tribe was already getting suspicious of their less than divine actions before ‘purification’, now they would be in almost as much danger as he was himself.

“Aarrrgghhhh!! Oh gods stop! Help me!”

Amiene’s voice, from just outside the burning tent he had just escaped. Sweet, naive, headstrong Amiene, in pain beyond measure, the one person on Gaia that could make him smile, even laugh. Saul spun around and saw the chieftain’s son and the priestess crouched over Amiene, her screams and look of pain and fear chilling him to the bone. The backs of the primitive heathens were turned to him…he could probably kill both before they turned around, but there were too many tribespeople around…he’d never make it out of the village alive. And the fate they would have for him would make his eventual death a mercy indeed. There was only one thing to do.

Saul raised his bow and aimed towards his screaming friend through eyes rimmed with tears. It would be a mercy, to die at a friends hand than a long painful lingering death at the whims of the tribe. It was hard to let fly the arrow, but compassion, even the hard compassion of a quick death, was preferable to sweet Amiene’s current future prospects. He aimed for her exposed ear…a guaranteed instant death if his aim was true.

A tear streaming down one cheek, Saul let fly the arrow. He couldn’t afford to wait and see if it hit, he turned and ran low and fast towards the caves where the outlanders were rumoured to be. They were his only possible salvation now, and maybe he could be theirs. As he ran towards the caves his eyes finally exploding in the stream of tears that had threatened for so long.

    “My poor sweet Amiene…”

Thoft- The assault up the Ramp
"As rage clouds judgement, learn to let go, or die." ~
The split second before Thoft launched himself at his former crewmate, he remembered this, and backed off.
If he was to protect Odysseus and Lydia, he would protect them, not by charging headlong into the foe.
Dammit! what is wrong with me!
As Thoft saw Oscar charge up the ramp with him, along with Giovanni, he fell back into a "V" formation with them. And yet through his rage and the pain in his head, a thought crossed his mind.
He slipped the femur into Giovanni's open hand, and as he touched it, another set of memories filled his mind.

oddly, it was the 1812 symphony, with each shot of the cannon, another explosion. the memories came at him suddenly, and he was not able to understand them all, later he would look at them, after the splitting headache went away.
"Think of it as a bomb." he told Giovanni, as he realised he had a weapon.

He rushed back to Lydia, seeing that the men had already picked her up, he supported her neck, as long as Odysseus kept her legs up, Thoft though she had a good chance of survival. He would protect her, because love is stronger than rage.

Giovanni stops his swing as he feels Thoft put something in his hand. He glances down, recognizing the femur he had been carrying. Think of it as a bomb What? How could he know... no, it had to be a coincidence... Yet why would he say that unless he knew... Giovanni thinks, remembering a time when the universe was...well, not sane, but at least easier to understand. Back when he wasn't about to celebrate his 3027th birthday, before he was a convict. He and a small group of Revoluntionist insurgents were just leaving the capital of Alpha 2, They had snuck in earlier, and planted a bomb in the meeting room of the senate. Giovanni, the leader of the group, had a small batch of explosives left in his hand, about a cherry bomb's worth. As they were leaving, an officer approched them, asking why they were crawling out an air duct into the capital. Rather than answer, he swings the explosives at the cop, catching him in the temple, exploding the small amount of explosives left. He watched the policeman crumple, a full head shorter than he had been, before running for his life. By the time they set off the explosives an hour and 15 minutes later, he had forgotten about it. Until now, when he had a femur about the weight of a small back of explosives in his hand, and was being advanced upon by what was once humans...hey! Enough reminiscing! Zombie things attacking, remember?! His mind screams out at him, bringing him back to reality. He shakes his head slightly, pictures the...thing...as a cop, and lets loose with a swing.

Caroline Walker- Repository for the Long Night

Shame, anger and suspicion flickered through Caroline as the spheres's voice struck her like a blow. Added to her persistent lack of vision, the disorientation made her stumble. Acknowledged, she thinks back; she needed to get away from the specimen let loose from the crate. She starts after the footsteps of the other two, trying to keep her feet while still moving fast enough to keep up with them. Every step carries with it the persistent feeling that she might stumble into one of the crates or some other obstacle, and she can't quite shake the instincts that make her move more slowly and cautiously than she should be doing.

But the spheres's anger leaves a wash of sour feelings in its wake. She'd followed their instructions as best she could, given the limited information they had given her; looking back, she couldn't see any errors in her logic. They had no basis to be angry with her. They shouldn't even possess the capacity for anger. Does true artifical intelligence share the flaws of the organic brain? Why would anybody design it that way? Reasonable explanations come to mind; perhaps it was a semblance of anger to try to motivate her. Yes, that made sense, though she can't—and won't—shake the notion that inherently flawed creators might have made inherently flawed creations. She tries to restrain the emotions, to stamp them out, but resentment lingers. If she was in as much danger as they said, the least they could do is provide her with more precise directions, since they were the ones blocking her eyesight. Not that she was ungrateful if seeing presented a danger, but it was a hindrance as well).

But then as she feels bits of the collective sphere-entity start to vanish, she realizes why it can't do that; it's busy trying to save parts of itself. She tries to quicken her step a bit, though she risks tripping herself; as long as it was preoccupied with the destruction of the spheres that had been in the crate, she had a little time to get out of its way. She's not sure of the power of the spheres, and wouldn't trust her connection with them to give her an accurate impression; they'd altered her enough that she couldn't get a good sense of what they could do with somebody they hadn't changed. But they seem to be the guardians of this place, and anything that could violate that protection.

Janks's voice and the arm roughly settling about her and pulling her along startles her at first, and she reflexively pulls away. She quickly restrains herself from doing that; he was helping her move faster, that was all. With his support, she moves faster, not worrying so much about stumbling. "No," she says, the word coming out in a gasp as she almost trips over his feet, "don't go back. Keep moving away."

Wyndell Tendarri - The Hallowed Chamber

It was happening again. The odds against such a thing happening the first time were astronomical, but being confronted by impossible creatures twice in a lifetime defied all odds. Wyndell's mind tried to turn itself inside out, or at least that's what it felt like, but something suddenly seized in him and everything became clear. And in the blink of an eye, Wyndell felt a calm come over him, though he could still feel the fear and the tension wanting to seep from every pore of his body, hew was suddenly ready to deal with it all. Quickly glancing around, Wyndell took in and analyzed the quickly evolving situation.

Lydia's injured, a head wound, and apparently a massive amount of blood loss. Matthias is assisting Lydia to her feet, Giovanni appears to be assaulting the walking corpses, as are two new comers. Their uniforms seem familiar, but that is unimportant. Wyndell assessed the situation, plotting where he would do the most good. Three against two, typically good odds, but the targets are unnatural, and we have no weapos to speak of. Lydia is in imminent danger.

Leaping his feet, Wyndell pushed the PCT around to his back, as he dashed for Lydia and Matthias. Sliding to a halt in front of them, Wyndell produced the small first aid kit from behind his belt. Popping it open he was dismayed to see not much was left in the way of supplies. They had used most it up after the crash. But there was at least enough left to stabalize Lydia. Grabbing the a lump of gauze, a bandage, the last plasma injector, and the bottle of painkillers, Wyndell dropped the container.

"Matthias, hold her steady just a moment. Give me second and then we're out of here."

Jabbing the injector into Lydia's thigh, Wyndell geld it for a moment, then pulled it away and tossed it over his shoulder. As quickly and gently as possible, Wyndell pulled the impromtu bandage off Lydia's head, and it its place, applied the gauze and self sealing bandage. Wyndell then quickly swung himself under Lydia's other arm.

"Alright Matthias, any idea where the hell we go now? Anywhere other than here being preferable."

Thoft- looking over the Injured Lydia
As Thoft arrived, he was able to see Odysseus plunge a needle into Lydia's leg. He shuddered. Something about needles put his blood on edge.

Alright, lean back, and this doctor is going to give you some medicine.
    will it help my condition?
Of course it will, now lay back and be quiet.
But why do I have to get the shot, none of the other kids do!

none of the other kids are as special as you.
    But what does it do?
it helps young boys. Now sit back, or you don't get that Ice cream we were talking about on the way here.
    but that doesn-
    alright, no ice cream
    But mom-
don't you "but mom" me, mister, we are going straight home.
    I don't want to...
You're going to drive me to the grave, young man, now lay down so you can take your medicine!

the memory shot at him as the needle entered Lydia's pale flesh. he could feel the tingling in the back of his neck where his own needle had entered.

His reverie was interrupted by a slight moan from Lydia, and he took almost a second to realize she was reaching for something. The something was easy enough to see, a shiny piece of metal about a meter long, oh gods, its a hand. A robot hand perhaps? No time to think about it, Thoft grabbed the hand and cradled it like a father would a newborn baby.
"Got it." he said, as he watched Odysseus place gause around her head. he also noticed that Odysseus was not used to that sort of work, it was a bit looser than Thoft would have had it.
"Alright Matthias, any idea where the hell we go now? Anywhere other than here being preferable." said Odysseus.
Thoft thought the question was directed at him.
"I beleive I saw the medbay in the ship logs, I can take you."
No promises about what is in the medbay, but she's going to need a sterile place to lie down.
"Keep her talking!" Thoft said, the only way to keep her conscious and alive was to keep her brain active.
On the point of impact, they can go, wait for the first blow, and then clear the line. Thoft had heard it before, but from where?

Misty - Repository for the Long Night

When Janks grabs her and pulls her up, Misty wavers just a little. The horrors she saw just a little before are still alive in her memory. What could have caused those visions? Was it something in that chamber? If it was, Misty didn't want to know what it was. But before she can think further on this, Janks's voice brings her back to present time:

"Don't ever sneak up on me like that again, you hear me?"

"I'm... I'm sorry. But what I just saw... it terrified me. From the looks of it, you didn't fare much better. What happened to us?"

As they joined Caroline and she asks them if they are allright, in, for her, unusally gentle voice, Misty looks at her, mildly worried. Only then the words struck her.

What do you mean, "I couldn't see."? What happened to you? I don't know about Janks, but I had some terrible... visions. It included me and Wyndell. I'd rather not go into details."

As Janks leans her against box and asks her if she's going to ok, she only nods. Sitting there for few seconds, she wipes the blood from her face, but only manages to smear it along her check. So she rather leaves it this way and looks back to the other two. She hears them talking about whatever has caused all this and is more than happy to hear that they don't intend to meddle with it anymore. Deciding she would do more good helping them she stands up and walks to Caroline.

"Caroline... what was that thing in there? And why can't you see? Is there anything I can do to help you?"

Caroline- Repository for the Long Night

Caroline could hear Misty's footsteps as they apparently caught up, but she didn't slow. They weren't far enough yet. "Keep moving. Don't stop," she says, a little breathless; running without being able to see took more out of you than it otherwise would. You had to strain to keep going without falling. Perhaps some of it was adrenaline, rather than fatigue. Regardless of why, it took effort as she tried to keep her words measured and calm. "We need to find a door out of here."

She decided it was worth risking the noise and expending a little breath to explain a bit further; it might avert similar disasters in the future. "I can't see because my eyesight was cut off, to protect me from seeing what you saw. Whatever was in there is extremely dangerous, and I can infer that it interferes with your mind through a visual medium. Right now, we need to get far enough away that it can't find us when it finishes what it's doing and starts to pursue us."

Blinking your vision returns to you. The sudden return of your eyesight to its normal clarity is disorientating enough to throw you off-balance, even more so because your connection to the sphere is cut off completely, leaving you with a dull empty feeling within you. Part of you though is still connected to the PCT, yet you do not detect the trace of the spheres influence in the connection. Or at least that is what they think [how are you masking this?] for you can detect them in the background, watching and observing as they jam the (unable to translate) from making a FTL jump within the chamber [It wants to escape to bring the scourge here].

With your newly restored vision you make out what appears to be three humans. You identify them quickly has priests of the native slaves [where did this knowledge come from?] performing an act of blessing upon their sacred blades [sacrifice of another native, long he is alive and screaming the better the blessing]. Seeing you they turn to look towards you and pulls out their sacrificial knives [well trained, 3rd level priests in charge of sorting the holy containers and making sure they are stored properly for the great journey] still dripping with fresh blood.

Turning to look at the victim you see that he is still alive [An excellent sacrifice] despite his skin hanging off him in ribbons, his lips little more than slits and his bleeding throat preventing him from screaming in agony [Excellent work, they did well]. Looking at the three of you [They have been touched by the specimen and they see that gods bleed, and gods do not bleed for we are gods of metal] they bare their teeth and scream out in their native tongues.

Running away from the container from which more and more bright flashes are emerging from it, you follow Janks who is helping to guide the blinded Caroline away from it. From behind you there is a ear-ripping sound of metal tearing and then a dull explosion, and pieces of debris fly all over the place, several of them falling to the ground nearby, the pieces quickly turning white from condensation forming on them. Whatever is escaping from the container is still thankfully out of sight, but you can hear something making fluid swimming sounds up into the air, but not getting any closer at the time. This tranquility is quickly interrupted by bone-curling screams that sound like they originally came from a human throat but is a sound that should have never ever come from one.

Still following the others you three turn a corner when Caroline stiffens and blinks as if she can see again. Looking forward you see three figures standing over a form that was human in a former life, yet now is so badly cut up that details are difficult to make out. Yet you can make out its chest moving as if breathing and a mouth with lips that have had slits carved into it moving as if it was screaming in pain yet nothing comes out. Clad in clothing that looks like the ones worn by the natives you ran into earlier, these humans are also clad in elaborate robes. Seeing the three of you they reach into their robes and pull out wicked looking knifes, stained with blood. Looking over at the three of you they bare their teeth and scream out in their native tongue, finishing with the following in English.

Rushing forward with the shinbone in hand, you wind up and take a mighty swing. The blow flies true and smashes against the side of the head of the one called Shad, caving in the side of the skull visibly and snapping the neck of the crewmember to the side. The ancient shinbone shatters within in yours hands and falls apart, leaving you with several pieces that that could be used as nice stabbing or slashing weapons.

Your target tilts its head at you as part of its skull falls off, covered in various bits of grey matter and blood. Yet there is no burst of blood, only a little bit as if the target heart was not beating. Despite this attack that would have killed a zombie on the Hope Killer instead of falling to the ground the target swings up and catches you with a blow to the chest.

The cave spins wildly around and you fall to the ground in a crumpled heap. Nothing appears to be broken but you are disorientated and the world seems to spin around. Looking you see that Shad is approaching you, with bits and pieces of its brain falling to the ground. It swing down at you but luckily you are able to roll out of the way, noticing in clear detail that the blow punches THROUGH the metal ramp you are on. It starts pulling back, trying to pull its arm free of the ramp and you take advantage of this opportunity and stab Shad in the forehead with the broken bit of bone in a section that was already weakened by your previous blow.

Twisting the shard you yank it out after turning the brains of Shad into a messy scrambled mess, and yet it still is able to strike out at you, a blow that you are barely able to avoid. Grabbing its own hand Shad yanks backwards and RIPS its own arm off, freeing itself from the ramp. Turning to face you it starts walking towards you, it’s remaining hand curling up into a fist.

From your vantage point you can see that the others have managed to take advantage of this fight and got Lydia into the relative safety of the ship. In addition the other person who engaged the other creature has managed to throw him over the railings of the ramp you are on.

Rushing forward you see that Giovanni is alongside you. He goes for Shad leaving you with Ezekil. Hefting the shinbone that you took from another corpse that didn’t survive the long sleep you rush forward. Flashing back to your training you let Ezekil launch the first attack, and are prepared for it and roll out of the way from a punch that would have taken you full in the face. Swinging the shinbone you bring it down on Ezekils arm with a dull crack sound, and the arm bends at a unnatural angle and falls limp.

Turning Ezekil swings his broken arm and the limp mass of flesh and bone catching you in the face. Following up with another blow from its good arm you manage to twist and move with the blow which drives you against a railing on the ramp. From the corner of your eye you see the one other person who is fighting with Shad who is flying through the air from a blow from Shad.

Focusing back on Ezekil you wait, and wait some more, and then twist once more to the side as he charges you and runs into the railing. Turning around you swing the shinbone once again at the back of Ezekils skull, sending him over the railing. He manages to grab it with his broken arm as he starts to fall, hanging over the deep abyss that the ramp goes over. In addition the shinbone has broken off into sharp fragments, and running on instinct you aim for the break in the arm of Ezekil and STAB through it.

The weakened flesh gives way and tears, and Ezekil falls victim to the sweet mistress of gravity, falling down the abyss. Watching for what seems to be hours you see him strike the ground and explode in a bloody mess. The severed hand however does not obey the laws of severed limps and stop moving, but instead starts pulling itself up the railing and falls back onto the ramp, and moving itself towards you.

By this point you see that the others have made it to the relative safety of the ship.

Light activate as your party races through the ship and you can’t help but notice how clean the ship is, yet it looks barren. Gone are the standard emergency first aid kits and repair kits, gone are random boxes, leaving the corridors bare and empty. Your mind races and you start to be able accurately guess the turns as you dig through the memories of various ships you helped design in the past. Within a minute your little party reaches the medical bay of the ship.

Opening the doors lights activate and you see that is a much smaller one than what was on the Hope Killer. The chamber consists of one main surgical bed and a few other smaller beds closer to the entrance with various cabinets along the walls. Settling Lydia down on the surgical bed you look up to see various tools held in the ceiling and along the bed itself. As she settles a computer terminal on the bed activates and starts running through a startup routine. It appears to be a basic scanning unit to be used for medical purposes that within a few minutes activates.

Letting the arrow fly loose from your bow, you turn before you can watch what happens but deep within your gut you just KNOW that it flew true, that you killed poor sweet Amiene. As you turn to run you hear orders barked from the Chieftain son. The parts you can understand seem to be along the lines of “Kill the heretic” with the wailing of the priestess behind him.

Thanks to the confusion that is going on in the village it is a simple matter for you to make your way to the entrance of the cave. Only once before have you been within the cave which was many years ago when you first came upon this village as a test for you. Only those that were worthy would have the willpower not to walk past Brother Human. Luckily for you at the time you knew what they expected and you prostrated yourself in front of Brother Human until he waved you away.

Arriving at the entrance you glance around and see that one of the falling stars have landed almost in front of it. Burning debris litter the landscape and the cave entrance itself has caved in. In front of it surrounded by priests is the Chief of the village, looking lost and confused while the priests have prostrated themselves around the entrance. From the main path you hear oncoming people and coming from it is the Chieftain son along with several warriors and laborers carrying various tools. As the son and father meet you are too far away to make out what is being said, but judging by the bloodsoaked clothing that the son is wearing the purification is well underway.

The Chieftain the gestures towards the cave, and the son nods and gestures as well and screams out orders. The warriors and laborers then rush forward and start clearing the cave-in, moving quickly, far too quickly to be good. Watching the gestures between the Chieftain and his son, you make out them talking about the visitors from the sky, and with a final gesture across his throat you realize that they are being blamed for what is happening.

Thinking you remember shortly after your arrival discovering a small side-cave nearby. You had made your way within it, and after several hours of walking through it you found yourself in the what could only be the Repository for the Long Night. Rows and rows of the strange boxes that your efforts were put into, seemingly frozen in a flash, with the priests escorting them into the cave of Brother Human. Slinking around you had noticed several priests in the area moving the boxes around, they eyes lost and confused as if they were following orders from another power. At the time you decided to leave quickly before you were noticed, but now you have to wonder if that small side-cave would still be open and if so, would it lead you to the outsiders.

The path to the side-cave would most likely be clear as well, yet there is always a chance with the rain of the stars that others may be around seeking to live.

Wyndell Tendarri - Medbay of Chasing the Second Star

Wyndell stepped around to the control console that was powering up next to the surgical bed. As he plucked at a few of the symbols he recognized, the display became more and more blurry to his sight. Damn. Been too long without my glasses. Giving his head a shake to try and clear his vision. But after only one or two seconds his eyes began to blur again, this time feeling as if they were trying to go cross on him. Giving himself a brief slap in the face to try and wake up a bit, it suddenly occurred to him that he had configured the PCT to compensate for his lack of glasses when he first found it. And though its interfaces were three thousand years ancient, so was the ship he was on. On top of that, it was now computing with the power equivalent to a pair of Tartan-class super cores, rigged in sync no less.

Pulling the small but powerful PCT from his shoulder, Wyndell set on the diagnostic terminal and fumbled about for the small hardwire connector set in the bottom. Finally finding it, he pulled about two feet of cable loose, and began his search for the medical terminal’s jack. With his eyes getting only worse it took a moment, but thankfully the people who had put this vessel together had stuck with standard configurations, and Wyndell was able to locate the port mostly from memory. Jacking the PCT in, he plucks at the larger than normal images his PCT is set to display and tells the system to start a full diagnostic of the patient, but refrain from any intense or invasive procedures. We may have to move again in a hurry. Don’t need her stuck to a machine. Then the PCT started getting blurry.

Bracing one hand on the console, Wyndell rubbed at his eyes with his thumb and fore finger, trying to massage some more focus out of them. Unfortunately the rest of him took that as the sign to try and relax, and since he had long since been running on pure adrenaline, the result was that Wyndell almost toppled over face first onto the floor. Barely catching himself, Wyndell pushed himself back instead, landing against the wall behind him. He gestured at the console.

“Matthias, watch her. I think I may be out of juice over here.”

Slowly sliding down the wall, Wyndell came to a sitting position, his legs stuck straight out in front of him. His vision had gone completely blurred now, and it felt as if his retinas were now on fire. A pleasant sensation to be certain. On top of that, all the aches, pains, and general injuries that he had sustained since waking up were beginning to make their presence known. His shoulders were cramped, his legs were dead weight, and the slash across his face burned anew. Looking up, Wyndell tried to make out details around him, but his vision and his mind just wouldn’t lock onto anything. Making a pathetic attempt to wave at the nearby fuzzy mess that he believed was the newcomer that had aided them, namely by the color of the blur, Wyndell kind of chuckled to himself.

“So ‘Homer’, what is it with you and this Odysseus nonsense?”

Wyndell kicked his head back in his best attempt at being casual, but instead achieved a sense of walking wounded. And for some reason his mouth kept going dry. Damn I hurt.

    Thoft- The Medical Bay

Thoft looked at Odysseus as he slapped himself, looked and found a power outlet, and then slowly slid down the side of the wall.
As Odysseus did this, Thoft looked over this "Lydia" person. Who was she, and who were they, why were they here now? What time is it, and why the hell can't he remember his name? He shoved all of this into the back of his mind when he realised she was looking at him. He smiled sadly, inwardly suprised at his reaction to her beauty. She reminds me of.... someone, but Who? Not like its a damned suprise that I can't remember, but who is this girl?
After a second he realised he was staring. He looked towards the monitor and hooked himself into the wall, Thoft might not have much, but a pint of blood would get her a long way. While he knew there could be a chance of blood mismatch, after the scene on the ramp, it was a small risk. Lydia stirred when the needle found her arm. Thoft could understand the discomfort.
What was he supposed to do in this situation?
somewhere deep down, he realised she yearned for the arm, or something that used to be attatched to it.
"Malakai." the word meant nothing to him, but it was obviously the name that she was attatched to.
he set the arm down on her stomach, and placed her left hand on it.
She was so beautiful. he thought, his blood flowing through her veins.
    then he saw it.
    All of it.
Her waking up on the ship, the battles with the zombies, and the reavers. the images were so intense that Thoft felt his head was going to explode.
then he saw it, a man, malakai, a technician that she fell head over heels in love with, die at the hands of nature. he burned it into his mind, and tried to release the painful memories.
"So Homer, what is it with you and this Odysseus nonsense?"
Thoft heard the comment from a distance, as if the man had shouted it from a mile away, yet it was so very close, Thoft turned to him, understanding the reference.
"You lead your people to victory with words and your mind, you've kept them alive with the cool head, You've survived sparta, and are now on an Oddessy home. Other than that, I have no idea, it is your name, just as hers' is Lydia."

    "Damnit."

Saul wiped the tears angrily from his eyes and stared at the tribesman as they dug away at the rubble, safely hidden in the trees at the side of the path. With the strength of blind faith behind them it would not take long for the rubble to be cleared. Then they would be upon the outlanders...an ambush...many of them were unarmed....it would be a slaughter.

"No, they're my ticket out of here...I need them."

Saul broke to the left slinking quietly but quickly through the trees, his years of hunting experience coming to the fore. Skirting around the main entrance, he headed for the less trodden path he had discovered once before, hoping against all hope it would still be clear. The caves were like honeycomb; this path led to the Repository of Long Night, he was sure that from there he would be able to find the outlanders. The question was, would he get there in time?

Saul's feet slapped down onto the packed dirt of the path, and a quick galnce around confirmed the path was clear and deserted...at least at this spot. Breaking into a run, Saul made for the side entrance to the caves, bow held easily in one hand and an arrow in the other. If there were others on this path he would be ready.

Saul quickened his pace, hitting a flatout sprint, aware of what rested upon his shoulders. These outlanders were his way out of this godforsaken place, people from another world, they could tell him so much about the places he had never seen. Maybe they could take him there. With his friends dead he had nothing to live for on Gaia anyway.

"I must get to them first, for my sake and theirs."

He spoke no more, saving his breath for running. Saul ran headlong towards the entrance of the cave, just round the next corner. He had been lucky so far, he just hoped his luck would hold out.

Looking behind him as he helps rush Lydia into the ship, Matthias feels a pang of regret as he watches Giovanni and the other Chasing the Second Star crewmember face off against the two zombie/human/whatevers. He should be helping them deal with this threat: no man left behind and all that. But Lydia needed immediate medical treatment, and Matthias still wasn't sure this newcomer could be trusted around a dying Lydia and, well . . . Wyndell.

He certainly wasn't the most capable combatant, but then again Matthias was hardly a trained killer either. He had learned that the hard way, the usual way a man learns how to kill, and gradually becomes comfortable with the thought of ending another's life, should it prove necessary.

The rest of the journey to the medical bay was thankfully uneventful, and a quick inventory revealed that its medical scanner was still in operatable condition and unlike the rest of the ship apparently, the medical bay had not been stripped clean.

While Wyndell worked on getting the medical scanner up, Matthias dug around the supplies, taking quick stock and trying to decide what would work best in this situation. Like the Hope Killer before it, Chasing the Second Star was from his own time, and thus its medical bay was stocked with equipment he at least had familiarity with. There was no magical futuristic wand he would have no idea how to operate, but instead artificial blood injectors and cans of bio-foam.

Turning back to the others, can of bio-foam in one hand, blood injector in the other, Matthias is surprised to find that the crewman has already started a blood transfusion of his own with himself as the donor. It seems to be working so far, but Matthias knew just enough medicine to know if they were of different blood-types, all hell was about to break loose. At least the man appeared to be from their own time as well, so he would presumably have good old-fashioned human blood of A, B, AB, or O types, instead of some sort of strange genetic drift human blood.

Setting aside the blood injector for the moment, Matthias approached the bed with the can of bio-foam. Positioning himself across the medical bed from the crewman so as not to disturb his transfusion, Matthias tried to maintain his calm tone as he addressed Lydia.

"Alright Lydia, I'm now going to remove the bandages and squirt some bio-foam into your head wound. It should pinch a little bit but shouldn't be any worse than what you've already been through."

A half-truth: bio-foam typically felt like liquid fire being poured into an open wound for the first few seconds as it attached itself and altered its molecular pattern to match the person's, but it was true that it wouldn't be any worse than what Lydia had already been through. Particularly with the apparent death of Malakai, unless there were others suddenly running around here with cybernetic arms. Given the appearance of zombies, aliens, and androids, pretty much nothing could be discounted at present.

"After that, we'll scan you for any other injuries, and maybe give you some painkillers if you need them. But not too much, because we'll need you cognizant enough to run with us if more of those things show up - there aren't really anymore of those things running around in here, are there?" Matthias asked, looking up to address this last question to the crewman.

Then, taking a deep breath, Matthias reaches up and removes the bandages from Lydia's head. Although he would have prefered to work carefully, the nature of the wounds and Lydia's already critical condition necessitated more speed than care. Pulling the last bits of blood-soaked cloth away from Lydia's head, Matthias positioned the bio-foam can properly and activated it, spraying it wherever it seemed that Lydia was wounded.

Once this task was finished and assuming no alien horrors immediately kicked down the door, Matthias sighed in relief. "Lydia should be fine now between the bio-foam and your transfusion, at least long enough for us to give her a full scan."

Walking over to the medical scanner's controls, Matthias notices that Wyndell has attempted to jack his PCT in, but finished halfway through and was now slumped against the wall. "Need some stimulants . . . Odysseus?" Matthias asked, allowing himself a small smile at using this new nickname.

Hearing the latest crewman's comments, Matthias allowed himself a small sigh of annoyance. "I'm not so sure about the home bit, friend. Home is three thousand years ago, so unless you're going to tell me there's a time machine around here somewhere, I don't think going home is going to be the plan for anyone. Survival is, and let me tell you, I'm getting damned tired of facing down certain death every couple hours on the hour."

Sighing, Matthias shook his head and rubbed his own eyes as he attempted to make enough sense of the scanner controls to start a "basic medical scan". "Sorry, we're all just tired. I could probably use some of those stimulants I just offered to Wyndell, or should I say Odysseus. Hmm, so if you're Homer, he's Odysseus, and she's just Lydia, what am I? The Frozen Man?"

The goofy smile Matthias forced onto his face instantly falters as he realizes his mistake. He really was tired to be making stupid slips like that. Shaking his head, Matthias tries to cover up his mistake, the words sounding pathetically hollow. "Sorry, guess I really am tired if I"m bringing up that old boogeyman. My older brother used to regale me with tales of his hideous exploits throughout the cosmos when I was just a kid. Guess those stories made a lasting impression on me."
I didn't actually intend to kill EVERYONE. It just sort of happened.

Caroline Walker- Repository for the Long Night

The spheres were gone, and she could see again. Are they really gone? I can hear them still; are they still listening to me, watching me? Irrelevant at the moment. What they had said, though—it was worrying. Parts of it were contradictory; parts sounded like the ramblings of madmen. Had the spheres been human, she would have counted them insane. Could an artificial intelligence lose sanity? Could the incredibly complex processors that made up the spheres have degraded, producing something akin to madness? Or was she simply failing to understand all of what they were trying to say?

Worship; a disquieting word to use. Spirituality was a natural stage in the evolution of intelligence, but that didn't make it correct. It was misguided, it fostered blind obedience. Religious fervor was inferior to rational thought, as the march of time had proved. The spheres had set up a religion for their native slaves as a tool, to keep them obedient. Humans often had an unfortunate mix of intelligence combined with lack of foresight; they questioned an action that seemed illogical because they couldn't grasp the eventual benefits of it. Blind religious fervor would keep the natives from questioning and rebelling against the spheres, and Caroline would have agreed with their tactic fully, except that...

... the men before them were clearly not the result of a madness just now inflicted upon them. She knew the rituals they were carrying out; knew that they had showed skill with the knives they carried. The spheres of the Ancients had given their approval to such sacrifices. That the man had not been able to scream would garner more of their favor.

How long had the data corruption festered inside the artificial intelligences? Had a desperate mankind, unwilling to spend the time needed to perfect their designs, made them flawed from their creation?

It was strange how the organic mind could dwell on such things at such a time. Caroline couldn't even blame it fully on that side of her; portions of her internal processors were analyzing the problem as well.

She put a stop to such thoughts. As vital as those considerations were, they would do her no good if the slaves killed all three of them. She could not allow herself, or any of them, to die. She steps away from Janks to give herself more room, raising her hand—instinct had brought her hands up already, ready to use the things she was holding as flimsy shields against the knives—and pointing steadily at chest height. A hit at any point along that line would incapacitate, shattering armbones or puncturing lungs.

She fires two shots as her line of fire (she thought it was a military-grade needler) traverses the rightmost of the three natives, backpedaling steadily. Her line of fire—a simple thing to calculate the probable points of impact and try to regulate shots—intersects the second, and she fires again. Mathematically, it was an elementary exercise to calculate almost exactly where the projectile would impact and thus when she should fire; in practice, she was finding it was not quite so simple. She could make the calculations in time, but actually firing at the exact right time was difficult. Adrenaline pounds through her, throwing perfectly timed electronic impulses just slightly off and twitching her aim slightly out of sync with where it had been a fraction of a second ago.

Distantly, she realizes that she can feel activity with her mind, through whatever connection the spheres had established for her with the PCT; but she has no time to spare for monitoring it. She was fighting for her life.
