"Frichten", according to "History of the F word".
Actually, that very infamous word has very complicated origins. It's not known exactly where it hails from, althought there are some false theories about being an acronym. (It's not.)
I'd link you to the Wikipedia Article, but the board wouldn't let me.

Re: Wadledo's Weirdly Warbling Watercress Watching Washing Machine Only Random Banter
Wow, haven't been here in a while.
Anyway, I started reading If on a winter's night a traveler recently. It's a hilarious book, but it's plot (the 'you' plot) is completely ridiculous (at least so far)!
Anyone else read it? It's a really interesting book, anyway. Kind of a love poem (except it's a novel) to books, in its own way.

My! I've been away longer than I realised!
Just for the purpose of being slightly less rude, I'll just acknowledge a couple of posts from the previous thread, then I promise to keep my time-travelling to the absolute minimum required for existence.
Thankyou for your comments, Banjo1985 and Raiser B1ade.
"Kneenibble
What is a good way to increase the hospitability of very clayish soil to standard temperate garden vegetables, besides adding compost?"
Sorry Kneenibble, I'm afraid the agronomical (domestic/commercial plant production) is out of my league - I look at ways of killing plants...well, the ways in which plants are killed by nasty things like antimony and arsenic. Also, soils high in too high in clay are not much of a problem here in Australia (what with it being so weathered and volcanically inactive); we more tend to have too little clay. So I'm afraid I can't be of much assistance there. I'm guessing the problem is that your plants struggle to penetrate the soil and/or suffer waterlogging. Such problems may be overcome by soil biota, specifically insects, which increase the porosity (amount of holes), improving permeability. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Poos.
There we are, all done now. Back to your current line of discussion...Much silliness is required to keep one sane

Re: Wadledo's Weirdly Warbling Watercress Watching Washing Machine Only Random Banter
It's this more of a media discussion topic? Anyway, quick answer:
I read it when I was at university, so that's...um...mumble mumble years ago and I loved it. I think you've got it right when you describe it as a love story about novels. The main plot is kind of light, but at least (don't read this unless you've finished)...
Spoilerit has a happy ending.
It's amazing the way a novel which mainly consists of the first chapters of so many different books - none of which you get to read the ending of - can manage to be such a page-turner. But it was. I was reading it in translation, but it still managed to get its hooks into me. (Kudos to the translator.)
In summary: yes, I enjoyed it a lot.

Why would Father Time's arch nemesis be Captain Dark?
I just does not understand it.
I still have an easter egg to eat, it's a little depressing.
Also, BOO! You are now scared.
...why? I don't think I've ever requested a Cat-Muffin from you.
Muffins come without Cat- these days?
Wow. That's some amazing advancement you humans have there. I praise your genetic manipulation skills.

No weird stuff, just ... you know ... pain.
I'm sorry to hear about yours. Do you have any painkillers that actually work? (I can usually survive if I dose myself heavily enough, but I know many migraine sufferers find that the drugs do nothing.)
Umm...do you know what your triggers are? Hormonal, dietary, stress-related? It took me ages to get my new monitor set up so as not to trigger migraines, so that's something else to consider.

Re: Wadledo's Weirdly Warbling Watercress Watching Washing Machine Only Random Banter
Yes. And you don't want to know what other Goddesses are coming soon. . .
On last night: My pillow was humming at me untl it was stupid o'clock (read: 3am). Then I must have gone temporarily insane.
I exorcised the pillow. That's right. I snapped, grabbed a Bible (we never ever owned a Bible, it just showed up on our bookcase one day) and exorcise the thing.
And the humming stopped. I don't know why. Could have been psychological or possibly demonic haunting right out of TVLand, but it worked.
Then I tried to get to sleep.
And headache happened. It felt like my entire right half of my head was caught in a flipping vice.
Result: say, an hours sleep. Max. But mum was kind enough to phone up prospective work people and tell them I was ill.
She did that when she saw me nearly set my hair alight when I was cooking porridge for brekkie.
Went back to bed. Now I feel semi-alive.
@Jibar: He has Cat-Muffin templates; I seen 'em.

Re: Wadledo's Weirdly Warbling Watercress Watching Washing Machine Only Random Banter
Might be stress, I'm not sure. I took a panadol, but that was our last one. *sigh* My migraines are still pretty rare, but I think they're starting to get worse and/or weirder...
Also, I mentioned a while ago a site that said, and I quote, "Care Bears are the source of all evil." Well, I just found another article on that same site that declares, I kid you not, platypuses are demons in disguise. Seriously, I think demons could find better disguises... My goodness I hope that site's a hoax.
(I hope that was ridiculous enough to not be religious...)Last edited by Serpentine; 2008-03-31 at 09:05 AM.

Your mum's your doctor? Lucky, but wierdish. How long till she gets back?
And on the Source of All Evil: It's my sister.
I have between fifty and eighty links in my Favourites. She went through each and every one of them and linked them all the the same page of the same site.
CBeebies.
And left them under their original names. It took me hours to get them all back because I either label them crypitcally, under another language or some other way; and never use pg. [number] for webcomics.
I had to go through so many things to get them back.
Ten of them were vital for college as well.

@Jibar. I made the Catmuffin as Mr. Scruffy and Mr. Scruff loves catmuffin avatars for the Mr. Scruffy itp contest. So, ha!
Also, Damn you, national rail! Damn you! *shakes fist* It's taken three days. Three days, to get a gorram ticket to Shrewsbury. They kept telling me lies and saying come back with X tomorrow. Then saying 'oh! You don't need X, but why haven't you brought Y?' Argleblargle!
I personally find the Bible is better for hitting people with. That's why you get 'em in shabby motels in the middle of nowhere. To drive off banditos. *nodnod*

Bath makes what Bath wants or is asked to make.
Besides, think seashells . . .

Nah. I like trains. They let me get to places. In a similar fashion to planes, in fact. Very usuful when travelling, don'tcherknow.
And I wouldn't have thought a chaste warrior goddess who settles disputes with law is really you, Rogue.

Re: Wadledo's Weirdly Warbling Watercress Watching Washing Machine Only Random Banter
Hun, panadol will do nothing for a migraine. For over-the-counter stuff I'd recommend extra-strength ibuprofen. (The good thing about ibuprofen is it is very difficult to accidentally overdose on it. Of course, you should always follow the instructions on medicines carefully...but...if you accidentally take a few too many paracetamol that could cause some pretty nasty liver damage, whereas a few too many ibuprofen won't.) You can also get a doctor (or doctor-mother) to prescribe something even stronger if necessary.
I'd recommend you think seriously about any factors that could be causing this sudden upsurge in pain. Stress-related migraines are deeply annoying, because of course, if you're stressed already you don't have time for a migraine...but there could be another more-controllable factor. Like I said, I realised that my monitor settings were causing me problems, but it actually took me two weeks of almost constant headaches to cotton on to this fact.
Do you wear glasses? Were you in the library when this started, and if so, what kind of lighting do they have there? Were you using an unusual computer with a screen you're not used to? It could be something as simple as that.
