Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I thought Swashbuckled was musically their second weakest song, after You Are A Pirate. It was also one of their funniest, after You Are A Pirate and Back Through Time.
I don't get the "buy a Honda" joke though.Step 1: Get workers to make goods for you.
Step 2: Sell the goods for a higher amount than what you pay the workers.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I'd say that Alestorm's latest album is better than Swashbuckle, Swashbuckle's latest album is better than Alestorm's previous two, which are in turn better than Swashbuckle's other work.
It used to be that you couldn't compare them too well, since they were in different genres. However, Swashbuckle's move towards a more melodic sound has made the two bands more similar. Still, both bands will appeal to different audiences. I think Alestorm has captured a more piratey sound, although that doesn't necessarily make them better.Step 1: Get workers to make goods for you.
Step 2: Sell the goods for a higher amount than what you pay the workers.
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I think that Swashbuckled was intentionally what it was, it seemed to be making fun of Swashbuckle, and the non-pirate lyrics they mix in with the pirate stuff. I'll be the first to admit, I have not listened to very much Swashbuckle (I plan to fix that, though they don't seem like my bottle o' rum).
And congratulations grimbold, I hope you get that interview, your review had a lot of truth in it.

Stoner Metal fans rejoice, for Kyuss Lives!
No Josh Homme of course, but I'll be damned if that's gonna discourage me from seeing them live.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
In my opinion, neither has done anything good in the last 20 years. However, that may only be cause I'm comparing them to their old work. I can't tell how good their new work is, but it's definitely not as good as it was in the eighties.
I can't really say which band I like better. It depends on what I'm in the mood for. To compare The Number Of The Beast and Master of Puppets, my favorite albums by each of them, Maiden are better but less consistent. Half of The Number Of The Beast is in my Top 25, and the other half is not worth listening to. Master of Puppets on the other hand has nothing approaching Hallowed Be Thy Name or Run To The Hills, but I'd put The Thing That Should Not Be in the bottom half of the album, which shows what I think about the overall quality.
I'm feeling really bored since I've got nothing to do for a couple of weeks, but at the same time really pumped because I'm listening to some good metal. It's a weird feeling, though I've had it a few times before. Anyone else ever feel like this?
Edit: Also, does it annoy anybody that in the song Death Throes of the Terrorsquid, Alestorm rhymes time with time?Last edited by Zocelot; 2011-06-07 at 07:42 PM.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
The 80s ended about twenty years ago, give or take a year or two. I'd say Metallica peaked in '86 with Master of Puppets, and frankly I can't stand anything of Maiden's after Number of the Beast in '82. Twenty seems entirely fair, even if we're rapidly approaching 30 for Maiden...

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
It wasn't xkcd, but I'm sure I've seen a similar comic recently. I think it was about the 90s though.
Anyway, I was saying that the 80s were more than 20 years ago. I said neither band had done anything good in the last 20 years, meaning since the 80s. I also said they were good in the 80s. So, to summarize, pre 1990 they were good, post 1990 they declined.Step 1: Get workers to make goods for you.

So, I'm currently in between bands at a Kylesa/Rwake/The Sword concert. Kylesa was absurdly good, and Running Red was the highlight of my night.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Master of Puppets as Metallica's peak? No wonder I disagree with you so much
On the other hand, I haven't actually listened to Metallica in something rapidly approaching a year. They've been scourged from my ipod to be replaced by better stuff.
Also not liking Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time or Seventh Son is madness ...*Splendid Goatatar by that cool kid Serpentine

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Well Moff, I think you are right in saying that Master of Puppets is Metallica's best album, however they still released some excellent material on And Justice For All and The Black Album
as for maiden
have you heard Dance of Death (released 2003) that is one of Maidens best albums ever! Also there live album Rock In Rio (released 2000) is pretty much the greatest live album ever.
i prefer maiden because in my opinion they have released more good albums than bad ones as opposed to metallica...

I would definately agree that Maiden is better than Metallica, but I've never been too fond of Metallica, always prefered Slayer and Anthrax to them.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
this is the big 4 in order of quality for me
1, Metallica, Slayer-They are the same level really, Metallica is catchier and more rok n roll Slayer is more brutal
2. Megadeth-Dave Mustaine is the best thing about this band
3. Anthrax-For some reason they never really hit it off with me in the way that the other 3 did

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I liked The Final Frontier. On the other hand, anything by Metallica after the Black Album is "meh" at best.
So I'd say Maiden. Both bands' early work was very good, but Maiden has a better standing in recent times.Avatar by billtodamax

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
In all fairness, all of the Big 4 had bad periods of records, Metallica after the Black Album, Anthrax after getting John Bush as lead singer, Slayer after Undisputed Attitude and Megadeth after Cryptic writtings.
If I did my top 4 Big 4, it would be
Slayer, most brutal
Anthrax, most fun
Metallica, not the best at anything, but good overall
Megadeth, really never could get past Dave's voice sadly, it just annoys me.
Also I quite like the drumming of Benante and Lombardo, and that counts for alot to me. Lars Ulrich is just way less interesting a drummer.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Fun is a wide term, and it's meaning in that context is very vague.
I say as long as we enjoy metal and respect each other, it's all good!
I think If Metallica had a more competent drummer I would like them more.

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
Just reacquired the album A Requiem for the Light by Grimoire, an Israeli metal band. I think this was their only album, and it's kinda obscure I guess. I first got it more than 10 years ago, and like so many other things from back then I somehow lost it. It's been a little hard to track down again, and when I ordered it on the internet I kinda figured they'd write in a few weeks that "sorry, we can't get this album for you after all, it's nowhere to be found", but here it is. Old memories.
Can't even find any of the songs on youtube. But then, it's not really as great as I remember it Still, nice to have it back.
On the current topic of Maiden vs Metallica, I'm in the Maiden camp myself. Never really listened to Metallica at all for some reason. Been a fan of Maiden for a long time, on the other hand.

Arch Enemys new album is out. It's called "Khaos Legions" and it's damn awesome!

Re: Metal Thread V - Defenders of the Faith
I've been listening to it for weeks on Youtube. I think it's a pretty good album, though with a high amount of filler. I was disappointed that their cover of The Zoo is a bonus track in Japan, it's really good. Other favorites off the album were Bloodstained Cross and No Gods, No Masters. Nothing seemed particularly boring to me.
