Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
Okay that was epic. So Roy managed to win the fight with his intelligence after all. I, for one, hope that Thog died, just because that would be a helluva way to go and to be honest, there's only that much humour you can get out of a character like Thog. Perhaps a Miko/Therkla-like death scene for him next strip around?
And, thank you Giant. Great work as usual.

I liked it very much, absolutly worth waiting.
But to the important part, who is going to calculate the damage Thog took from the collapsing masonry?

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
You're trolling, aren't you? How could you possibly equate Roy surviving with plot armor? Especially when Roy was dead just a little a while ago, he has no plor armor.
I hope he's dead, because now he's run out. I mean, this is the best time for him to die, and nothing he can do can top what he's done, so Nale probably shouldn't bother. I'm DYING to read the commentary for the next book by now. I wondering if the heading will be The Dissolving of the Guild. It sure seems that way.
Totally worth it. I'm just glad you weren't sick again.Spoiler: This signature is a historical relic from a long-ago time of regular forum activity.Aww man! Even all the witty self referencing sigs are gone now!

Ah, there is the roy we all know and love. Cynical and intelligent. Also able to think on his feet in the heat of battle. I foresee things going well for him shortly.

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
"That's how i use my intelligence score in combat, dumbass" is going to be the best crowning moment of awesome for roy. It was too great. It was so great, i wish i could remove the last five minutes from my memory and read it again.
I wonder if thog is dead (in this case i expect a miko-like death scene) or if we'll have a dragonball-like scene where the pile of debris explodes from the strength of the guy duried under it.
I also wonder how could thog jump that high.
EDIT: last, 4-pages update! we only had one other of those. It was totally worth waiting two weeks for it.Last edited by King of Nowhere; 2011-10-04 at 08:52 AM.

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
The numbers look right, but I think you're overestimating the damage Roy did over the course of their fight. He got two hits in with a nonmagical sword, some highly ineffective punches, an arrow through the knee, a smashed flask in the face and the final kick. The glass to the face and arrow in the knee were both strategically important, but by sheer HP numbers neither one is going to inflict more than 6-8 damage - a bit more if you count the called shot at the knee as a critical, but even then it's still in the teens.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Thog! I hope he's OK. Well at least not dead.
Great comic! I still find it so hard to believe that Rich can bring so much life into stick figures.
Well, on an up note, there were people who survived the WTC falling on them, so there is still a smigen of hope for him.Last edited by Laws of Chaos; 2011-10-04 at 08:56 AM.

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
Damn, Roy is frickin' tough. Leaving aside HP loss for a second, allowing yourself to get slammed through 3 stone pillars would hurt like crazy.
I'm surprised that everyone here seems to have less knowledge about storytelling conventions than our favorite bard. Remember, the bad guy isn't dead until you see the body (and half the time, not even then).

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
Plus 3d6 falling damage from the initial fall and whatever slamming at full-force hard enough to crack stone into a pillar does. I suppose you could ad-hoc the latter, assuming he's sprinting, we can assume he hits it at ~10mph (~15 ft/sec), which is the speed an object falling for 1.5 seconds would be going. Such an object would have fallen 25 feet, so using Thog's weight and the formula for fall damage, we've got another 2d6 for each slam into a pillar.
EDIT: But I am an idiot and had Thog as a fighter (d10 hit dice), not a Barbarian (d12). Correcting the post now.
EDIT the second: I need to be more thorough, I'd read it as Thog missing Roy and slamming into the pillars himself. So disregard that damage - but I'd also forgotten about Massive Damage, which means Thog's got a DC15 Fort save or he's dead.Last edited by Cranica; 2011-10-04 at 09:16 AM.

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
That was friggin awesome, Giant.
And Thog's totally still alive, he's just out of it.
150-180 hp seems like a reasonable range for him, and given that Roy's unarmed attacks probably weren't doing more than 3-4 hp, tops (remember high level Barbs have some innate DR. Doesn't help much against 2h weapons, but against unarmed attacks it'll cut damage taken quite a bit), Thog should have plenty of hp left over, assuming ~70 damage from the falling ceiling (which seems about right).
However, even though Thog's got some HP left he's still pretty beat up, plus he's Fatigued from the Rage ending (which is why he started turning lighter color near the end and got confused), and he's buried under a bunch of rubble. He's not dead, but he's down and out for the time being."You are what you do. Choose again and change." - Miles Vorkosigan

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
It was more a way of ensuring that Thog would hit him into the columns, rather than any of the other architectural features of the room. He throws out a taunt while standing in front of the desired target and then Thog hits that target. Having Thog's rage run out was fortuitous, but given Roy's early 'I choose me' comment I'd guess he was prepared to go through with the plan even if it ended up bringing the ceiling down on him as well. He'd certainly followed through masochistically without a specific plan up to that point.

Re: OOTS #808 - The Discussion Thread
Thanks for the comic Giant!
Well... I'm not going to complain but Roy really did take quite a beating there. I'm surprised he's still fit but I guess for the entertainment of the scene, I liked it. Though, yeah, I hope Thog is fine. I still find him entertaining *shrug*

And also
Those skills allow Roy bonuses and other ways to find secret doors, passageways, and hidden hollow spaces.
Back in the olden days of first edition, when we had to walk uphill through the snow both ways, I had a friend who used the 'exact measurement mapping' rules, slowing us down to a crawl time-wise (and the DM would roll on the random encounter tables via time). And he would get exact measurements to map things out, and danged if you couldn't figure out where secret things were on the map once you had it filled in enough to spot odd hollow spaces.
His name was 'Talon' and so, after we became famous and all, it was called the 'Talonian School Of Mapping.' In the alternate school, the Farsheenian School Of Mapping, you just draw circles with the name of a room and then lines to other circles denoting hallways.
