Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
Other extrapolated (troublesome) theories:
Either:
a great disparity in the male:female number ratio of Pegasus. Causing excess female population to seek mate from other races
or
Pegasus males don't treat pegasus ladies right, due to miltarized cultural traditions. alienating many pegasisters.
---------------
Unicorn race sufferes from many genetic issues due to heavy emphasis on genetic purity.
-----------------
of course it could also be that males are rare for all pony races, forcing many mares to seek mate where ever they can find one
edit:
numbers don't quite add up, as we've seen three mules (well one might be shown twice, so two mules) and two donkeys. unless there's a hidden donkey and mule village somewhere.
number are too few to extrapolate data for Griffin and zebra races.Last edited by Kairaven; 2012-05-02 at 02:17 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
I tend to think, based on what we see in the show, that the second of these is quite unlikely. As for the first... well...
If we take the apparent demographics as representative, females appear to outnumber males by a significant margin. One could debate the causes as much as one likes, but in the end it makes little difference.
There are basically two ways I could see a society with such an imbalance handling the issue: either several females attach themselves to each male (see: Big Mac Gets All The Mares), or many females don't try.
This latter option is not necessarily as unfortunate as it sounds. Consider the mane six. Apart from Rarity, do you think any of them would be specifically unhappy to live out their lives without marriage, or even perhaps any significant romantic relationships at all? Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
The counter to the first way is of course the not insignificant number of apparently single Stallions that are not quite "right"? The simple numbers would mean that these stallions would have a mate of some sort.
so that means many mares don't try to find a mate. or.....

Yikes. Hope you feel better soon.
...Thanks for the mental picture. Was I the only one who imagined a small, but brilliant Sonic Rainboomlike explosion at the end?
Well, that is how real horses work. Though we haven't seen any proof of that kind behavior on the show. Unless Doughnut Joe really is Con Mane.

My personal take is that there *are* a good number of stallions to be had, we're just not seeing them. We are following the escapades of six young ladies, it stands to reason their peer group is more of the same.

Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
Presumably, places like urben Manehatten and such probably have a better ratio of males, as well as ever-industrial Cloudsdale and there rainbow factory providing jobs for young, eager to rise stallions fresh out of....whatever pegusi school is called. I mean, understandably, there would probably not be much traffic of young males to a little town next to a forest.
To young mares who would like to be within a days travel of Canterlot but cannot actualy afford to live there, its perfect. Well, besides the occasinal monster or ill-intentioned visiter, but hey, a cottage near the woods!

Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
As I've said on numerous occasions, I simply work on the basis that ponies have the same sort of demographics as real-world equines, which do have a skew in favour of females (because of the harem breeding pattern). One assumes such has almost certainly have fallen out of favour in modern (or even historical) Equestria, but it's there. (Though one would personally expect that ponies would be naturally more tolerant of what humans would consider unusual relationships anyway; of course, that might just be my natural equalism showing through (i.e. what two or more sentient/sapient adult creatures get up to in their own time...))
As I have observed, there are enough paralellels between pony and real-world equine behavior that it isn't a completely unreasonable assumption.Last edited by Aotrs Commander; 2012-05-02 at 04:51 PM.

Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
The Big Mac gets all the Mares situation is actually pretty true to horses in general, what with them having harems. Although from the relationships we have seen, this doesn't appear to be the case ("his girlfriend certainly thinks so").

Re: My Little Pony XLIIV: Season II Ruined My Fanon!
[SPOILERS!] [Mass Effect 3]
SpoilerIt did not prove effective, that's the point. There was a kid. He got on a shuttle. The shuttle blew up.
So?
I've seen palaven burn. I've executed criminals and witnessed the fall of the great. I've seen the death of people who Actually Matter.
A five year old dying does not tug on my heart strings any more than a 15 year old,or a 50 year old. The alliance had YEARS to prepare for this. They didn't. That kid's death was a good thing, because him dying - along with everyone else who died - finally prompted some action.
This is wartime. First we win. Then we mourn.
More to the point though, after going through so much trouble I Mass Effect and it's sequel to create deep and lasting attachments, that the designers would use such short hand as "see a kid, see your character smile at the kid, see the kid die, you emotional yet?" is supremely Insulting.
I don't know much, I guess Krogan are mostly a bunch of Zerg-Rushing huge guys that got Genophage'd when they went mad, but they're huge, and huge is bad you know, Ergo, they eat shots like a wall in front of a stormtrooper.
I don't really know much bout Battlemasters, but they're still huge shotgun-snipable. But when do they explode stuff with their face????
Krogan are big, sure. They are also functionally immortal - we've never heard of a Krogan dying of old age. And Wrex is like, 2,500 years old. Wrex alone rmebers as much as all of civilized human history in the western world.
Krogan also regenerate quickly. You put a high-power blast of metal into his face? Congrats, he's in a rage, he's already healed most of the damage and you probably didn't get through his face plate. Also he is trying to eat you now.
Battlemasters are vanguards. Vanguards get biotic charge. In the span of a second, the Krogan slams into you with significant force from his homing blast, fully recharges his barriers and is in melee range. By the time you try to unload into his face, he's already wearing yours.
And Rainbow Dash could take him, hooves down.
And I haven't only got Shepard, I got Master Chief and Ramirez, and even worse, Gordon Freeman, and he's able to create explosions by simply shooting at stuff .
I've got Rainbow Dash; explosions from her face, and sonic speed.
Twilight Sparkle; teleported and logistical savant.
Pinkie Pie; did you say explosions? You meant Gordon Fremane makes cookies every time he shoots, because Pinkie accidentally swapped out his equipment with her party supplies.
NOTHING is better than Humanity, main reason why the reapers tried to make a human reaper
No, silly you've got that backwards.
Humanity is second rate: the reapers are only making a human reaper because every other race in the galaxy fanged up on and neutered the Krogan; the Krogan race was their first choice. Humanity is backwater.
I kinda had Hype Backlash too to be honest, also that it had a childish theme and they tend to be the inverse of the "Manliness, Badassery and Explosions" that I'm actually used to and makes me like stuff
Also note for me Manliness means "high capability of pwning people", badassery means "extension of directed pwnage" and explosions "capability to use the pwnage for the production of the purest form of awesomeness that can exist on the universe", from that you get that I'm a fighter, not a lover
But still I don't even know, I could just try again cuz I was kinda raging at the moment and didn't see the entire episode . But yeah, I kinda like a part of it.
Why is high chance of 'pwnage' considered manly? Are women unable to pwn? What do explosions have to do with pwnage? theyre wasteful. All that energy, which could be directed to some use, released as force, light and heat. Messy.
And why not be both? I'm a lover and a fighter. Don't limit yourself! Humanity is all about potential right? Don't stall based on labels!
Oh man it's contagious!
Humans are not more "special" than any other sentient species out there, except in their own minds. The more I read things like this, the more convinced I am that the modal distinguishing racial trait of humanity is actually just self-aggrandizement.
But it's not self-aggrandizement til you beat them.
Aye.
I'd like to point out that the spoilers portion of Luka's post was actually a mass effect 2 spoiler though, as ate most of my own. Except for the opening tirade...
Noted though. Sorry mate.
Good point.
That's right. Keep pulling our bigger and bigger villains. I've got my Ace in the Hole.
SpoilerThe ace is ponies.
Right Commadore?
Huh. Sounds like the Sun Runners and Stone Burners from those Melanie Rawn books with all the psuedoGoidelic terms she refuses to clarify pronunciation on.
FUND IT
Why?
What could Celestia do? IF she were in Twilight's group, what would she have contributed? Would she have any positive effect at all? Or would the bearer of Magic have deferred at every opportunity, forsaking every chance to enkindle Friendship once more?
And how do we know she wasn't directly vying against discord? He works via narrative. Celestia could have been challenging him at his own game - she would have to, since it's either his way or the highway.
She stepped aside because that's what good leaders do. Equestria didn't grind to a halt during the reign of chaos. She probably made sure everything else was working well.
*2nd is the way he picked up all the ponies at the end even with the elements of harmony on and they had to be saved by Twilight's bubble, which implies that if Discord felt like it he could have just taken control of them at any time (except for Twilight, who apparently vexes him).
I'm going to remember this one.
Though it made me run through a sequence of thoughts that leave me profoundly sad.
Sadly, if you take a look at much of history, it means exactly what you might think it means.
This too makes me wrap all the way around from 'joke' to 'profoundly sad'. Is it too much, do you think?
New headcanon. Aotrs is actually a pony princess. His special talent is being a lich. Discuss. Not yet he's not. He's actively refused my binding his spirit into a pony frame several times - and bombed my workspace when I tried to do it in secret.
Oh? Interesting. I'd never thought of this before. Hmm.
There's actually two distinct things here. One is people, especially right after the show came out, who would respond with "why would anyone in their right minds ever want to watch this?" It became common to respond to those people by telling them that actually it was really good and they should check it out. A more recent phenomenon (and one that I haven't seen much outside this forum) is people actually saying that it's too popular and they're tired of ponies everywhere even though they don't really mind the show. I feel much more sympathy to that but it is kind of weird that people get more annoyed with ponies than with Star Wars references or Firefly references or [insert your favorite popular show here] references.
A pink pony head with a meme attached sort of gives it away though.
Possible, but it does strike me as unlikely. Cadence and Shining armor looked surprised when their love magic worked. I don't think that was something ponies had drawn on previously, or if it was, it had been lost and forgotten. Now, in the wake of the wedding, perhaps there will be magical research into how to draw on the power of love. But that would be new for Equestria I think.
In the interim, we've previously discussed the nuances between love and friendship, and the different kinds of each. I suspect that the love enhanced barrier is sufficiently similar to the burning heart wielded against the Windigos. The elements of harmony seem to be the Sufficiently Advanced version; a 2e wizard must find three hairs from a holy demon, a minotaurs promise and the sound of love to make an item; a 3e wizard must spend 1/2X gold and 1/25X experience, based on the presumed market value (X).
Ponies must either trundle along until they find the appropriate ritual, or bring together the EoH, which has done all the work already.
I suspect that Pegasus unicorn, unicorn and pegacorn are all technically the same or variations thereof. So they win I guess.
They do in our hearts!

Also Hi Castaras!
Aside from wondering how they held you still for this, I'm not particularly phased by the revolation. At least not from you...
I am bedridden for the immediate future, hopefully The Internet will be able to cheer me up.
I'll give you the rundown on that WoD thing I've been trying to bug you about then.
[tangent] [gaming]Spoiler
I wanna use nWoD rules to run a D&D game.
Yes, yes.
Are you done laughing or shaking your head yet?
I know it's silly. But its what I need; a chance to get better with the rules, a chance to introduce my meat space friends to nWoD without jumping in cold, and a chance to play out the style of game they've been angling to glean from D&D 3.5.
I could probably figure most of it out. My trouble is of course, magic.
I want to use Mage because magic being a dangerous thing with consequences is perfect. But everything easily done by some sort of magi could fall under Occult. I am trying to work out a way mitigate world smashing. Highly expensive first dot, sure.
But I don't have any of the books. Which makes figuring it all out kinda hard =þ
Huh. I'm surprised that's a problem for you? I suppose I've been irritated once I got to the half hour mark because I couldn't do anything but the taste was always more of a perk.
Too much of a good thing I suppose.

That was spectacular. I like the choice of Celestia as Plato and Luna as Aristotle in particular. Can we adopt this as one of ponythread's representative images or something? It just seems appropriate after that extended loyalty discussion.
It starts.
This heavily implies the possibility of polygamy or some variation thereof amongst the ponies, especially if females are simply far more common among all different groups. Even if we do have 1 to 1 pairings, it may be the case that nearly all pegasus girls pair up, unicorn girls get other unicorns, and, as you noted, the earth pony girls are the desperate ones. Although one could probably substitute out desperate and instead say career-focused and effectively contributing to society if one were talking from their perspective.
