Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Ok, first things to test, image resolution. I'll keep working at the same size scale, but when I export I create higher resolution images. People have mentioned in the past not being able to see the text, and I'm disappointed sometimes that hard work I put into designing these panels gets shrunken down so that all you see are the black outlines.
So. Image resolution. Inkscape can export images at different dpi (dots per inch) so I'm going to show you guys the same comic, #26 at different dpi and you will tell me which one seems the best. Not too big, not too small.
1. 90 dpi
2. 100 dpi
3. 110 dpi
4. 120 dpi
Next is white space below and above the comic.Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
I happen to like 120dpi in this case because since it's getting opened in a new tab for me anyway, might as well have it fill most of it side to side. 110dpi is also fine.

Oops just realized that the last two panels don't have gray lines on the floors. Will fix that soon.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Starting 100 I can read it well enough. I prefer either 110 or 120. I choose 120 among them.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Ok, until more people post, and there should be more of you, I'll keep the poll for dpi open. In the meanwhile, the next update shown here introduces a smaller upper and lower bounds making it more comic and less white space.
The white space was bothering me before and after taking a look at the current OotS comics, I felt the change would be all good. So far it seems all good.
About the dpi, you all seem to like 120 dpi, is it because the comics come out at their highest resolution possible? More importantly, do you think 120 is big enough?Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
100 is fine. The only time you really need substantially higher resolution is if you're going to print. If you make the DPI too high, it'll require a lot of scrolling to view, which may break up any multi-panel visual effects you're trying to set up.
Suspiciously normal.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
120 is big enough. As is 110 already. I like it because the 100% zoom is big enough so the letters in my monitor are easily readable without having to zoom and then I expect any smaller text you might want to use (whispers, i.e.) will be readable, unlike many other comics that I have to zoom in to read it comfortably (OotS) and use a whispering font that can't be read even in maximum zooming¹ (our little aventure).
¹ A whack for those who think zooming works like in films.Last edited by Admiral Harkov; 2012-08-23 at 05:58 AM.

110 seems best to me, but thats because the text gets fuzzed at 120.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Exactly my point, though I'm talking about 110 dpi being adequate for my purposes. Thanks for your input everyone.
So I'll reupload the newest comic with both quality updates, here and get to work drafting the next one, which like I said will take some time with me getting ready for college and what I have planned for the next comic and such.Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
I am glad that you are getting more done. You had a streak back there when there was nothing, then I lost this page for a while. =P
Either way, it's good to see this comic back on track! Keep up the good work!
(Oh, and if I find an error or something that doesn't seem quite right, I'll let you know.)
Also: I think that either 110 dpi or 120 dpi is fine, but 120 might be a tad too large. Maybe 115?Last edited by Halleflux; 2012-09-09 at 01:37 AM.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Yeah, sorry about not posting stuff. I AM working on the comic, though it may not look like comic's are coming out. I'm trying not to make it sounds like I'm trying to find excuses, but remember that I'm trying to make this like an actual JRPG. So I have to design all those fancy designs on
and monsters, towns, etc. I am working on a world map as well, so all the usual world-building stuff comes into play, islands, mountains, rivers cutting across continents, making the world look like it could be from a Tales game.Spoilerlocation titles, coming soon
I do appreciate you all for being patient though. It's just, with college coming up... and Borderlands 2...Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP

...
Nice spoiler.
And I really do understand. Right now, I'm going into 9th grade, and I am still trying to program a game, and there just isn't time. I know college is much bigger than 9th grade, but I really have big problems with homework and such.
Still glad you are finding time for this, it is an excellent comic!SpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerSpoilerCode:You actually went through all that? Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Oh cool. What language? And how are you animating it? (If at all.) I'm working on a similar project but it's a little ambitious. I'm writing it in Java and my team has two other members in it. I'm doing most of the coding while another member is making .midi music files for it and the last one is a creative writer/graphic illustrator that I knew from high school. He's doing most of the heavy story and dialog as well as things like maps and concept art.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
C#, using the XNA framework. It's a solo project for now, and I SUCK at art. So no, no animations until I can find someone to help me/hire them.
For a percentage, that is. I don't know if I can actually sell it very well, even though is should be a good game, just because I don't know how to publicize it. So no up-fronts from me.
EDIT: I still have decent graphics, although right now I just have a few squares and rectangles. Good colors at least. My brother helped me with that, he's good at finding awesome color schemes.Last edited by Halleflux; 2012-09-12 at 05:04 PM.

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Quick question. How do you guys feel about spoiler-related stuff? I mean, nowadays stuff that gets ported to America from Japan, we pretty much know who all the characters are in the game. Well, if you are the type of person who does their research on something before you decide that you like it. Super Smash Brothers Brawl was a good example: Smash DOJO being a site set up specifically for revealing the new stuff that would come out in Brawl.
Well anyway, I almost have simple character profiles written up and version 1 drawings of each of them, which do not count as their official art or status image. I was wondering if I would offend anyone by posting them. Or, would creating that kind of hype be bad since I haven't gotten many comics out to warrant me doing something for the comic that isn't the actual comic itself? Bleh, I don't know. There's a little bit of story spoilers in the accompanying descriptions though.
Question is, would you all like to see some entertaining spoilers?Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP

Re: Tales of Revelia: JRPG-styled Fantasy Webcomic
Aright, I'll post them one at a time then, like how a real video game news release would be. Their descriptions should be in spoilers though, and really the only part that would be spoilers is how they join the party. Everything else is just a description.
But I will black out the image and give you guys only an outline until that character is revealed in the story. There. Sound good?Currently playing a "blind" (Miraluka) sniper in a Star Wars SAGA Edition RP
