Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
Two pages overnight? After that massive quote-post? Ponythread, I am disappoint.
I was half-way through the quote-post when I realised I'd been spelling it wrong - I did do a Ctrl+H, but it apparently didn't catch all of 'em (as I think it was only muggins who was spelling it wrong.)
SpoilerLike I said, I'm half convinced he's Undead (of a type, at least a spirit rather than a corporeal entitiy, so the the line is both blurred and probably largely...

S3 (Commercials)
SpoilerPinkie changing her face was creepy. Hilarious, but creepy.
Arabian horses! Sure, why not, right?
There's a quick clip going by of AJ and Rarity getting turned into kids. That's a bit weird, eh?
S3 (Black Book)
SpoilerHead Canon- Its Celestia's book of hotties she has on call
And... what, we get a medal or something? A Cookie?
That was the "Crowning Moment of Awesome" for me in the second episode.
S3 (Blue)
SpoilerMight not be a halo, could be just a hill in the background. Look at the far right. There appears to be another peeking above the house roof.

S3 (Ponies)
SpoilerSlaves?
To me the Crystal ponies seem to just be an Earth Pony subrace with shinier coats. I think it's more of their location living in the Crystal kingdom that gives them their gem-ly appearance than anything else.
Though growing crystals is a pretty good theory.
I like them. AJ of course gets my vote.
AJ + Dragon = Can't lose my vote. (Except possibly, a dragon with Trixie)
Haha, excellent.
S3 (Toss Me!)
SpoilerI'd pick Cadence because she can fly and return to you for another shot.
S3 (Applejack)
SpoilerIn this case it was better than letting Dash guard the fake heart. Somepony was gonna get hurt if that happened.
S3 (Joust)
SpoilerAJ was busy keeping everypony from the heart, Rarity would flat out refuse to joust, and Pinkie Pie... I dunno, but I suspect Pinkie wouldn't be following conventional rules of Jousting.
"Hey, no party cannons!!"
Good luck!!

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
In non-spoiler news, one of the new pvc 3-packs I ordered arrived yesterday, the Pony Spa Set which had Lotus Blossum, Zecora, and Pinkie Pie. The sculpts continue to be very nice, but sweet Celestia Zecora is HUGE! She easily stands about a head taller than any of the other figures.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure he is a type of undead or anything so specific. Also, didn't they say early in that he was specifically turned into a shadow and/or banished into shadowyness of something?Last edited by Tiki Snakes; 2012-11-11 at 01:04 PM.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
S3 Villain
SpoilerThere's some trashing of Sombra on other sites for just being a cackling snarler who can only say slaves, crystal, or noooo. But, it occurred to me that unlike Luna or Discord before his imprisonment Sombra was a mortal unicorn. Can you imagine being stripped of of your physical form and all the sensations that go with it then being imprisoned immobile for a thousand years? Its probably too dark for a kids show but its possible that most of Sombra's mind was gone and a primal drive for conquest and vengeance was all he had left. Man, the Diamond Dogs got off lucky. Celestia and Luna do not f*ck around when it comes to attempted slavery.

SpoilerNew headcanon: Sombra was just trying to make friends, but nopony understood him because he couldn't speak very well. All he ever wanted was to hug his beloved subjects, and they took it the wrong way and blasted his soul into the arctic north where he could spend a thousand years alone and cold *sniff*
What was it the good Commander said about fanfics soon vindicating Sombra?

So, I've been watching the FieryJoker do his reviews of all the My Little Pony episodes. Its nice to see it graded by someone who is neutral to the whole thing and he has some pretty funny jokes as well, even if some are a little over the top.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
SpoilerWhich is why liches are crazy. For a kids show, the fact that enemies are usually given a punishment of eternal imprisonment instead of death makes sense, but definitely gives the show a darker edge when the implications are considered. Also, how did he get out of the ice? That wasn't explained to my knowledge.
SpoilerYes, he wanted to hug them so much he put them all in chains...
Also, hi Ponythread! Figured I might as well post after hanging in the drawthread for so long.Last edited by Madcrafter; 2012-11-11 at 02:08 PM.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
On dark magic
SpoilerOne thing I find amusing is that a lot of ponies are talking about how Sombra wasn't developed enough, even joking about redeeming him like here or mostly just saying he was a boring do-nothing cloud of evil.
But, at the exact same time, everypony is getting worried over the fact that Twilight whipped out some dark magic, even though all we saw was a shadowy visual effect and no change to Twilight's personality or any danger of corruption at all.
Hi there.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
SpoilerNah, that's still just because they got it all wrong. Sombra was just trying to explain his wishes to his subjects by using the image of chains as a metaphor for hugs, a poor choice in hindsight. They still think he wanted to enslave them, but he just wanted to hug them. Same with that city-surrounding cloud of smoke, he just really, really wanted to hug the whole city.
Also welcome to the ponysanity
SpoilerYeah, I don't think Twilight/Celestia were actually performing anything corrupting or the like either.
I think Xykon does pretty well in the irredeemably evil department, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are people who try to vindicate him too.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
In all fairness, in just ponythread it'll either be for humourous/contrariness purposes.
However, I garentee that someone out there will do it with genuine seriousness.
(In the same seriousness as they do those riduiculously contrived sadfics, or they did with every single other villain. Not even pony is immune to the "make the bad guy sympathetic while simultaneously villifiying the good authority figures" crowd. You can bet they'll be someone who uses this as an excuse to bash Celestia. Again.)
It just deeply frustrates me that nothing Evil is allowed to stand on it's own, as Evil, it has to be made good to be "cool", because it's impossible for some people accept that some things just aren't good. If I could find all those people, I'd give them a first-hand demonstration in why Evil doesn't need or want to be toned down, as I would remove their soul's spleens and set them on lightning...
*eyeglow twitch*
I'm going to generously assume you are suggesting that is what somepony would suggest, as if anyone did suggest anything that innane as a reason, I would have to literally invent new ways in which to inflict pain, as no method currently exists that would hurt enough.Last edited by Aotrs Commander; 2012-11-11 at 02:37 PM.

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
Two Dimensional Evil is almost always used as a character criticism. Realistic motivations are the key to making a character believable.
Also, I do believe that whilst there is some crossover between the Villain-Sadfic crowd and the Ironhoof tendancy, they are different things and don't inherantly go together. The common theme is exploration via subversion.
SpoilerAs far as Sombra goes, he's clearly a mixture of Power for the sake of power and/or good old fashioned megalomaniacal sadism.
He was probably always a giant douche. Learning powerful dark magics that relied upon and fostered the negative emotions probably...didn't help. The power they granted could only have corrupted him further.
And frankly, I figure being imprisoned for a thousand years doesn't seem to have helped his mind much, I kind of liked how there was an implied difference between the Dark Mastermind who created the Door and so on, and the cackling entity of pure idiot malice that was barely capable of stringing a sentance together, let alone a decent monologue.
Also, a purely theoretical question, What on earth do you get out of Being Evil that makes you so protective of it?

Re: My Little Pony LVI:S Has Left the Playground!
New Episode
SpoilerNah it's just proof that ponies and griffons can cross breed
SpoilerAnd he was actually destroyed this time! (He shattered into dust after regaining his full form. He's not an undead so he's not coming back.)
Also Sombra has no excuse for what he did. Chrysalis? Well she's responsible for feeding her changlings. Discord? He can't not cause chaos, he literally is the physical manifestation of it. Arguably he lacks true free will as a result.
Sure they are still villains but if you look at them from a certain point of view they seem at least reasonable.
I don't think it counts until it's not just someone being silly. I also don't see how they could pull this off with this villain.
Anyways a comparison between S2 opener, Canterlot Wedding, and New episode
SpoilerVillains
Sombra falls short here. I got the impression that if Twilight failed, Celestia and Luna would swoop in and destroy him, though their lives were at risk the future of Equestria was not. Also he has no personality and barely any history. He was destroyed and shall never return. His design was actually kind of boring and really he's just a time limit for the Mane 6.
Chrysalis is pretty good. She's a clear threat and with her armies even managed to defeat the Mane 6 as well as Celestia. She also has a really cool voice, a really cool design, and a really cool idea. Now we've got this new race of changlings which have cool alien abilities and plenty of potential to return.
Discord was pure awesome. From the beginning of the episode he is dominating the story. He has his own twisted sense of morals and has lots of emotion. Really his emotions are constantly bouncing all over the place and he has one of the best evil laughs of all time. He also really throws his power around and does so in a way that's mostly meaningless. He mocks, corrupts, and mentally tortures the Mane 6 and does so with style.
Characters
the Crystal Empire was pretty strong in this regard. We got Shining Armor and Cadance a little more fleshed out as well as Celestia and Luna being cryptic. Twilight and Spike were the main centers of action but we got lots of little interactions between the rest of the Mane 6 which was beautifully done.
Canterlot Wedding fall short in comparison. It's mostly Twilight and her relationship with Cadance that's explored. But we get very little development of Shining Armor and Cadance. Chrysalis was pretty amazing. There were some interactions between the Mane 6 but not nearly as many.
Return of Harmony was again really well done. We didn't get any new characters at all or any development of Celestia. Discord got lots of development as he was in what felt like every single scene. However the Mane 6 and their individual flaws were explored pretty well and Spike had some pretty amazing moments as well. It had what is still the crowning moment of awesome for me in the rereading of the Friendship Lessons and the memory spells. We didn't get any mundane interaction because the Mane 6 were in crisis mode the entire time. Overall I think the Crystal Empire wins this category.
Story line
Crystal Empire was Twilight's show as the Mane 6 pretty much could have been cut out completely. It would have been worse for it but they could have as they take the roles of supporting characters, rather then main characters in their own right. Anyways as the story goes we really get to see Twilight flex her magical muscles and research skills which was awesome. We also get some great character development from her. This problem had a clear time limit and a unclear solution that was well played and fits with the spirit of the show.
Canterlot Wedding was weaker as the action was split between the wedding story and the changling invasion. Twilight's friends are basically background characters and really contribute very little to the story actually advancing. Twilight is let down by Celestia which was disappointing and her brother as well (though he has an excuse). The story also had more deus ex machina then the other two (finding Cadance by chance, Changlings beating them to the Elements, Celestia losing, Love shield,) which has required us to think of reasons why to solve those problems, (Luck, Royal Guard just suck, Celestia isn't as strong as we thought, and just fine.) Ultimatly the story barely revolves around Twilight at all.
Return of Harmony has a very clear and solid story arc. Discord returns, proves himself a clear threat, and there is a clear problem to solve. All of the Mane 6 get almost equal action and importance to the story. We really get a sense that the Mane 6 were flat out defeated which was very emotional. There wasn't much that could be cut out and there was still so much to show. Discord has some moments that just flat out make sense but as he'd say; "What fun is there in making sense?"
Music
Crystal Empire really suffered here. The Test song was very weak and didn't flow well initially. I think it should have been dropped all together in order to get more time to add more things in. The Getting Ready song was alright and fit well. It just wasn't as good as I'd come to expect.
Canterlot Wedding had some of the best songs in MLP to date. The weakest of them My B.B.B.F.F was still very good, flowed well, and was very memorable. This Day Aria is arguably the best song we've seen while Love is in Bloom fit well and was good quality. Overall all the songs fit very well, develop the story and action, and are just really good.
Return of Harmony had no songs and a good thing too. It wouldn't fit and leaves more room for action.
Overall all three episodes are really good and which one you like best depends on your personal opinion. For me it's Return of Harmony due to it's emotional impact, amazing villain, and not a slow moment to be found.
