I'm not sure about the A. K. Yearling name though. Seems a bit ill fitting for the author of an Indiana Jones clone. I suppose it's a matter of name recognition though.

Ropers are at least a fairly cool monster. I mean, they are a giant stone pillar that eats you by dragging you to it's mouth with strength sapping tentacles.

No, you see, they love each other because Cadance is the pretty princess with a heart of gold who is being courted by the school's most popular pony (duh!), Sporty McJawsome, who is of course also a complete and utter self-important jerk (double duh). This demands that Cadance doesn't like Sporty McJawsome (who has to exist by virtue of Cadance existing), but instead falls for the socially awkward but adorkably cute nerd who has a huge crush on her and performs daring and awkward stunts to win her heart.

This adorkable nerd has to be Shining, of course, because we know from the show how it must end. Shining can't be the popular and handsome sporty guy, because that would mean he had to be a self-important jerk who lose Cadance in the end and never truly had her heart in the first place.

And to complete the picture, the whole story about Cadance and her cute, adorkable coltfriend is of course told by said pony princess and her giggling filly friends over tea, in the presence of said coltfriend who tries to assert his stallionliness by being even more adorably awkward in the presence of all these giggling mares.

The reason for Everything and the Universe is that Cadance is a pretty pink pony princess with a heart of gold. Everything follows from that.

That it is in fact cute and occasionally amusing is entirely down to the art style, and the fact that ponies make everything cute and occasionally amusing.

I think your opinion of this arc is just a bit coloured by the fact you just don't like Shining. I honestly don't think they could have written this ANY way that'd you'd not find fault with just by virtue of it being about Shining (and to a slightly lesser degree, Cadance).

Worth remembering, this is not their romance story, this is how they met. Maybe even qualified as they first date. But what this story isn't is how they fell in love.

YES, the show staff couldn't resist the urge to make cracks about them getting married and living in a crystal palace... (and not inappropriately, given the comics ar essentially a humour piece) BUT (and assuming you do not buy into even the possibilty of "love at first sight") and, please correct the poor outside Lich if he's wrong, but are not the expectations of romance from most teenagers often wildly unrealistic anyway? (Is it not commented on often enough that often teenagers always believe it will Last Forever at first?) And is not that sort of thing tempered over time, with experience in actual relationships? I'm given to understand (from no lesser authority than Guybrish Threedwood) that marriage requries "courage, anchor, direction, sacrifice" and all of that sort of thing...

So presumably their crushes/infatation that they are displaying here evolved into something rather more concrete - unless you are seriously suggesting Cadance, the actual princess of love (bearing in mind love is an actual quantative force) has no understanding of her own special talent? I think, my dear Thanq, you are having a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to what you see as a steriotypical occurance without thinking around it a bit. There is at least a grain of truth to sterotypes, after all, otherwise they wouldn't have existed in the first place, distorted as they get with time.



Come to that, given that love and friendship are sufficiently powerful force that are strong enough to bind six ponies together before they never even met... Why is it not credible that Shining Armour and Cadance 'love each other for no rasin' at first BECAUSE they were so compatible. (I'm told that dating and such is mostly about finding out that compatibility, no?)

It's like that thing where people say they don't want to beleive in predetermination because that means they're just following a script - without ever actually considering that if the future mirrors the past, they choices they make they are the choices they were always going to have made, because of who they are - and if it's a script, it's one they tacitly write themselves by virtue of being themselves.

(And, to follow that to the really meta conclusion - if they find out a choice they made and make a different choice, that ALSO would have always been the choice they made (and any alternate future they avoided doing so or something would only ever have existed up until they made that choice). People seem to think that can't be scripted - and yet it IS, in every time-travel story which deals with that sort of thing. (It is, once again, people not being able to get their heads around a the fact a thing can't be a thing without being a thing.

(E.g. the Eldricth horrors/chaos gods et al that people sem to think (wrongly) can interact with the universe while not interacting with the universe. If something is truly immune to the laws of reality, it couldn't INTERACT with reality.)))

I liked it, for what it was, actually. It was that dumb kind of funny that I'm sure it strove to be. I don't hate everything because of Shining Armor either, in fact he's so unlike show-Shining in the comics that I kinda like comic-Shining just fine. Or at least don't feel any dislike for him, it's not like he's suddenly a favorite character or anything.

There's not necessarily anything wrong with the basic premise either, or stereotypes in general. I just really think it could have done it better. I mean, come on, a group of giggling fillies talking about coltfriends over tea, you know. I like to think we could expect better from the show, and therefore also the comics.

Rarity can be a stereotypical girly girl who loves fashion and wants to marry a prince, and still be a well-rounded and interesting character. We've seen that, the show has done well in that regard. So far we haven't seen the same from Cadance, and especially not in these comics.

That's my problem. I feel like Cadance, for all her pretty pink princess power and awful fate to be that girl who only exists for the sake of getting married, deserves a little nuance and love.

But it's my birthday, and new pony day, so I'm really not in the mood to get into a huge discussion of this sort of thing.
