DMS, my family would be asking for dimensions and such.

Well, I don't think you have any more reason to tell them that than you have to tell you family any other details about your girlfriends' genitals in general.
Certainly something she should be the one sharing, but also, none of their business in my opinion.

Hell, I've had a teenage girl explain to me at length how it's a label for what you're looking for right now, so that she was a lesbian last year but isn't one this year, though she was considering going back to being a lesbian next year.

You know, while I see how that is definitely offensive in some ways (and rather misleading), I thought the idea of people being able to decide their own labels and not being held to arbitrary social standards was a desirable thing? Sure, there'll be people picking labels that can be seen as inaccurate or facetious, but it's not really anyone's concern but the person themselves, is it? If someone wants to say that they're male this year and female next year, would that be a problem?

...But on the other hand, people using "lesbian" to refer to questioning phases or bisexuality might enhance the belief that all lesbians have the potential to be attracted to "the right guy," which is actively harmful. So I'm not quite sure what to think.

I wouldn't know either. I mean we've just had that discussion and the conclusion was "people should be able to call themselves whatever they want even if it's obviously false, and no it's not offensive that they do, what's offensive is our deciding that it's false". I fail to see why it would suddenly be the other way around, even if I agree it defeats the point of having labels in the first place if what they mean is up to each individual (which was my point from the start).

I think it suggests that she doesn't know what the word "lesbian" means, and that she may have an idea of it offensive to people of that sexuality.

Default Re: LGBTAitp - Part Fifteen

I've been watching a Korean show known as Personal Taste, Personal Preference or Perfect Match (no clue how it came to have so many names).

The main character is thought to be gay although he isn't, and there are lots of misunderstanding throughout.

There are lots of good things, like how it seems to be a non-issue for a lot of the characters, and although the main character is annoyed that people think that, it's no so bad.
And although there are some stereotypes (one friend starts pretending to be his boyfriend and he acts very campy), it's mostly to make fun of them, as the main character is always thought to be this or that way (can cook, can clean, dresses well) due to being gay, when he isn't.

But man, I'm annoyed at how they keep referring to it as not really being a man. There is that whole thing in which the main female character is told she's going to meet someone who is neither a man nor a woman, and that ends up being him, because he's gay. And it's reused over and over again, the "you're not an actual man" angle as some kind of euphemism to mean he's gay. It's annoying.

Another thing is that the main character trains the female I just mentioned to "become a woman" rather than a girl. And he teaches her pretty much only stuff I wanted to yell at. Stuff like being late on purpose, or not eating as much as she normally would while on date and eating again once home, and saying "Teehee, I'm such a light eater, I don't need much food" or that kind of thing. And to dress differently than she does normally (which is wearing comfy clothes).
Now, the woman is a slob, so I get teaching her not to be one, but it annoys me how the advice revolves around pretending to be someone she isn't and being so fake.

I hate that kind of plot. Take a female (usually a geek of some sort), and change everything that makes her her to make her like the stereotype from magazine, and then she's a worthy person. The message? If you stop being yourself, maybe you'll be beautiful!
    Ugh.

I'm really enjoying the drama though, but I felt like talking about these two things. I mean, I don't think it's the overall message at all, but that it's present to begin with annoys me.

It has alot of names because people translate poorly.

I dont' think I've heard of that one, but it sounds surprisingly progressive for a Korean Drama. Not that it's perfect mind you, but better than I've seen some. Offhand I'm not sure how many of the problems you list were bad translation as opposed to actual "offensive bits" for lack of an easier term, but I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Yea, the "fix the geek" thing is annoying, I agree there. especially when it's done in a way that conforms to another negative stereotype.

Yeah, I don't know much about Korea, but I hear that in Asia in general there is still a much bigger distinction between males and females and what's proper for one or the next. I believe both things are due to that: a female needs to follow the female rules, so that's what is being taught there, and because males and females aren't equal, being with one rather than the other is a much bigger difference.

Still, after watching it for a bit I wanted to talk about my frustration, as much as I think it's really not bad compared to what it could be. And what place is better than here?
