Why? Umm, no reason. Not I nor anyone I know is an elemental in any way.

The same way they would react to anything else really.
Oh, it should be noted. Souls occasionally appear in the hell dimension, in some spots more than others, and the Machinists do mine residual soul-bits (Mainly Souls whose punishment was to be trapped within the burning rock). If they run into somthing living in the Hell dimension, there are two ways they can get souls out of it. The Standard method is to kill it, and capture the soul as it starts to head to the appropriate afterlife or whatever. This is prone to failure, and part of the soul is lost in the process. The other method is to extract the soul directly, either through powerful magic, or through a nasty little device the Machinists have called a "Soul Extractor". Extracting a soul is much more efficient, than the Kill-And-Collect Method, you get the whole thing, it's much higher-grade, and even if the person was supposed to spend eternity contemplating philosophy whilst being massaged by hot angel chicks, you still get just as much of their soul as if they were supposed to be stuck in a cage watching somebody they hate get massaged by hot angel chicks.
