As of four minutes past three this afternoon I have finished my first term at Oxford. My last seminar was amazing. Gothic fiction and degeration theory. Also: albinism and She and Moby Dick. And leprosy.

I also found out that next term he's doing a short series on 20^th century Gothic including a whole lecture on H. P. Lovecraft, not to mention the other times he'll be referenced.
Seminars and general discussion will also include this extremely controversial question:
"Should the Twilight series be counted as Gothic fiction?"
Poor man, he's going to read all of the books over Christmas for that debate.
But actual lectures of Lovecraft?! By a leading Gothic researcher.

He also does Romantic and 17^th century Gothic in Trinity and master's courses.

Creative Writing focus?
It'd be nice to get marks for writing stories and the like. Is't hard having to write to preset rules and outlines when one'd rather be doing something else in a similar vein?

It's actually pretty nice. Occasionally I've had a brilliant idea I want to work with that I can't use, but usually it challenges you to write in ways you wouldn't before.
In my case, that means serious work.

My main gripe with my school is that's it's minor - hardly anyone knows about it and it seems to gather those who didn't get into more prestigious ones. But I've heard that the level of teaching is good and they don't coddle students there, so I decided that prestige is less important. Right now though, it seems that some of my fellow students can barely speak English, which leads me to wonder what are they doing on English Philology. Here's to hoping they'll simply fail the exams and I'll actually learn something there.

Heck, I can even smuggle people in. It's not like they check for ID or anything; I swear, I could just invite everyone up and take them to an English lecture of their choice.

I could do the same with maths here if I wanted. In fact some people on my course did smuggle people into our lectures, just because this one lecturer was so awesome. They didn't understand any of what he was lecturing on, but enjoyed it anyway just for the way he does it.
Sadly he's (mostly) retired now.

Note to self if ever visiting Britland during academic year within couple of years: Visit Curly at Oxford.
