Re: Keychain of Creation IV: When Misho is dour, relationships go sour
Well... you could have done better than that. It doesn't even rhyme... well, it does, but not with 'four'.
Otherwise... could've been worse.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
Smarmy bugger.
It's an in-joke that will be forgotten in a week. I like it!
Debasing: In terms of "lessening its purity", yes, taking other words and making them up off the top of the head does debase a language. However, it also results in an arguably better language.
I suppose the point I'm trying to make is that it's rather silly to argue over the structure of a language that has been made great* by its structure and content being fast-and-loose, rather than rigidly structured.
*Alright, yes, the Empire probably helped. Thanks to Andraste for the Void avatar.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
I have developed an exercise to alleviate this - attempt to describe, in a single, non-convoluted sentence, the concept of irony. By the time you think you've got a serviceable sentence, you'll no longer be mad.
Note - this does not work when people use "irony" to mean "sarcasm". That's plain irritating.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
Ah, so it is ironic that the monk who took a vow of poverty was arrested or disturbing the peace.
Hey, that does feel better.
And then when you add cynicism into the mix, it get even worse...
This, on the other hand, offers opportunities for a good deal of humour.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
So, a thread founded for the sole purpose of discussing a webcomic has, on its first page, turned into a discussion of the precise meaning of the word 'irony' and the merits or lack thereof of the English language as a means of communication*.
Does it say something about me or this forum that I am not at all surprised?
* It is, indeed, quite ironic**

We haven't had a camera shift yet, so I'm still sort of expecting on-topic-ness.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.

Well, the thread is entitled "The Lore Thing". It works on multiple levels.

Re: Keychain of Creation IV: The Lore Thing
Yes, but unless you're suggesting we adopt a specific language's singular neuter pronoun, there still does not exist one that is at least intrinsically neutral (I forgot He could be a neuter pronoun) within the English language.
And yes, languages are living things that change, but that doesn't mean incorrect grammar is indistinguishable from correct grammar.
I'm not really an English major though, I just wanted to point out that "They" as a singular neuter pronoun is not universally accepted as proper English, particularly when writing formal, instructional materials, like rulebooks.
