Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
I have a friend who uses the first two letters of the abbreviation, then stops abbreviating. I once asked him "What's the point of abbreviating at all if you're just gonna curse?" He replied that it was faster.
Anyway, Curls, I don't know how often they have tours, but it's easy enough to just go there and get access to the library for visiting or research purposes.

Bahumbug.
Yes. So? It wasn't direct, and if you understand it you understand it. If you don't know the word, you wont. And isn't Monty Python British humor? It's not under-stated at all.

This is true. I have a whole bag full of DVDs that I got from a colleague when he moved back to Sweden. He was giving them away to a guy that was just going to go to Cash Converter and sell them, so I got to go through them and found a whole heap of films.
They're still in the same bag that I got them home in, almost four months later.
Big Bang Theory is great. The geeky stereotypes are so over the top, and yet so fitting to the characters.
And yes, Penny is HAWT!

And I am the walrus. Koo koo. Ka choo.
Also, the libraries in my local area are pants. To call them diamonds would be an insult to the ferns from which the diamonds came.

Eh?
I was exercising understated British humour there. And tautologies.
Also: Python runs the gamut of humour. From understated and subtle to . . . well, asplosions, beating people up with fish, grannies mugging people and the Inquisition.
You can't classify Python. That is why there is now the term 'Pythonesque'.
Perhaps.
And no need to get needlessly antagonistic.
Amazon or charity shops for us. I think I've even got a version of Amelie from Sweden - it comes with default Swedish subtitles.
I'm not normally a fan of blondes, but I'd date Penny. She's got a great personality, is still quite smart and she has a bleddy great sense of humour. Plus she's actually geeky and honestly, if she hangs around with those four, she's probably assimilated a lot of 'smart knowledge'.
I also like how the four play into the stereotypes and define four levels of geek.
The 'realistic geek' aka Leonard.
The quintessential geek aka Sheldon.
The hopelessly deluded geek aka Howard and
The shy foreign geek aka Raj.
Shame about the lack of female scientists. Or,you know, females who aren't love interests or Penny. But I see why they did it.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Ignoring making any comment on how appalling I think Big Bang Theory is so as to keep my conspiracy theorist side out:
Man, friends and the Playground.
At Uni, since I made friends so gradually and didn't get on with my housemates, I became way more involved here and got really into the Steam community and such like. Since I got home, talking to my friends it's been like:
"Oh, there was this really funny comment on- well, you don't read it."
"Man, you shoulda seen this weird thread that- oh, uh, nevermind..."
"I was talking to BlackFox last night and it was like- yeah, you don't know her... actually..."
"So I was playing with... right. Let's not even try there."
I mean, Playgrounders are like my biggest social circle. I probably talk to more Playgrounders on Facebook than I do folks I've actually met. I play games with no one but the Steam folks online now.
And now I have to try and tell my best friend why he can't join a game I'm playing with Rutskarn. "Listen, nothing personal, but you don't know these guys and I just wanna play a game with my best friend... who isn't you."

BLASPHEMY! BURN ZEE HERITIC! BURN HIM NAO!
And Big Bang Theory does have guest appearances from Leslie Winkler, Bernadette, and Leonard's mother, all very geeky women in their own respects!
Best episode ever was when the new hot chick moved in upstairs and Penny was trying to show how "one of the guys" she was by telling a HILLARIOUS quantum physics joke that she didn't even understand until late in the show...

Jibar: And heavens help you if internet group A overlaps at all with internet group B.
(after telling anecdote with real names omitted to protect the innocent)
". . .huh, that seemed out of character for Arwen--"
"--oh geez, not our Arwen. That Arwynn spells it with a 'y' and two 'n's. She's dyslexic. . ."
"Yeah, that's Arwen--"
"--no, it isn't!"
(another time, another outsider)
". . .so you mean the one that's actually related to Peredhil?"
"No. The related ones are all guys. And don't roleplay girls."
(look of blank horror)
". . .no, you didn't flirt with any of the guys who are roleplaying girls."
"Because it doesn't scan, that's why! We can just about get away with singing Faldona because it's a near-rhyme and that makes up for the excess syllable, but you and your dactyllic moniker do. not. scan!--
"Oh. You haven't met Faldona. Well, what can I say that I haven't already implied? . . ."

Ooo, you lived in the time before the beginning of time? Cool! Where there dinosaurs?
Sounds kind of like my life, except perhaps that I don't have facebook (or rather, I have but I haven't done anything with it, and am ignoring it complertely all of the time). Whenever I've seen/read something funny, it's either writter here or linked first- or secon-hand from here. Also, I haven't had any form of contact with any of my current classmates during the entire summer break, and I probably won't before Monday, so my asocial streak should hold until then.Clouddreamer Teddy by me, high above the world, far beyond its matters...

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
. . .
How exactly do I point out the following ironies?
You're worried about internet creeps.
And yet you're an active member of an internet forum.
An internet forum created for the discussion of a webcomic parodying D&D and various other tabletop games.
A forum in which anti-social/introverted/isolated/friendless/odd people discuss geeky things.
Internet forums are bad and full of creeps.
Everyone who plays a tabletop game is a pyschopathic cultist who would sooner roleplay social interactions than even observe one.
With quiet, eccentric, lonely people. Who are bad and weird.*
I think I've pointed out the ironies.
*Disclaimer: these are stereotypes only, and are rarely believed by anyone. Except for the one about internet forums.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Protip: implying that everyone you're talking to are potential stalker creeps and threats is not the best way to engender further polite conversation.
Beyond which, understand that many members of this forum have known each other here for years. When possible, we've even gone to common places and met one another. It's hardly a circle of what one could call "strangers", and there's even a touch of your much vaunted 'real life' thrown in there, and it's not all that unusual that we would enter into other aspects of each others' lives outside of this particular site.

Hell, I have more of my information on my Facebook than I ever thought I'd allow on the web. The fact that I've friend requested the wonderful people on this forum, such as Jibar and Curly, speaks volumes of how I've grown since my initially joining this site.
True, I probably couldn't get away with a meet-up for another year or so, but first East Coast Meet-Up after that, I intend to attend no matter what I must contend.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Heck, I've been here for so long now. I've known some of you lot for longer than folks I do hang out with offline, and know a lot of you better than offline friends too.
It wasn't like a sudden thing, so many Playgrounders in my life, it just became much more noticeable and prominent this summer when I realised I can have entire conversations about people I've never met, and not one of the people I have met will understand a word.
At this point, the fact I do dodge the UK Meet Ups is both bizarre and noticeable.
NOTICEABLE NOTICEABLE I will use this word forever in every post from now on.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
Uhhh -
Yes, very much this.
I've only been here for three years, but three years is a lot of time to make friends, to get to know and trust people.
I think with many forums people would tend to form friendships and perhaps even arrange meetups.
There are even large concentrations of Playgrounders in Trogland who all live CrAzIlY close to each other and visit fairly often.
It's an understandable mindset.
However: what about penpals?
I was a wee leery of the ebil intermanet people, but that's what posting and getting to make friends is for.
My Facebook is quite empty. Because I keep forgetting it exists. Or about updating it. Or anything.
So, about two years then?
It's quite likely I'll be in Trogland then. First ever time properly abroad. I may pop by whilst on holiday with my real life friends.
EDIT:
I do the same. It's strange how . . . I want to say insidious, but that has very negative connotations, so I'll say addictive the Playground can be.
Number of times I've had to relate anecdotes about Playgrounders to real life people (and my mother) without mentioning the fact that I don't know their names. Or where they live.
And so you should come to a UK Meet Up. It won't be bizaree and noticeable if you come.
We will merely offer you cookies and/or muffins and invite you to play games.Last edited by CurlyKitGirl; 2010-08-19 at 05:53 PM.

Re: Masa's Massively Masterful Message Medium - Random Banter #146
People are equally capable of looking you straight in the eye of deceiving you as they are of doing so on the internet. Recognize that the people behind each username are as real as anyone you have physically met. Recognize that life does not stop being real when you turn on your computer or double click the Firefox icon.
Or at the very least, recognize that the decision to believe that someone is who they say they are is always a risk regardless or circumstances. The worthiness of taking that risk is up to the individual, who should be counted no more or less wise regardless of their personal policies on the subject.
Myself, I've met my fiancee and many of my best friends here. I have a difficult time believing I was stupid to trust them.

Advocating cannibalism? You are a crazy internet person!
Also, the reason I don't post more personal information here is that it's a publicly viewable website. Regardless of how doublecool Playgrounders are, you don't have to be a Playgrounder to access anything I post here.Last edited by Worira; 2010-08-19 at 06:00 PM.

The truth has been quoted in the above post.
Only a little cannibalism! It's not as if I'm telling everyone to cannibalise someone every day. Only once or twice.
Oh no. Everyone here is doublecool. Heck, I've even posted my address here. I'll do so again.

My friends and I have a working theory about him, currently we think he has OCD, along with a healthy dose of misanthropy.
I'm also glad that a popular show can make so many geeky references, and get most of them right. Maybe geeks can someday become the 'cool kids' after all.
My uni had a tour, but it didn't go to the library, for that very reason.
